I was reading a book by Joe Vitale called, “The Greatest Money Making Secret in History!”, and in it, another author, John Harrichara, who is the author of the second half of the title of this blog post, by the way, was telling the story of how he was really down on his luck and only had $4 with him. He was on his way to the grocery store to buy a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread for his two children.

On the way, he was stopped at a stoplight, and he saw a young man, his young wife, and their child sitting on the grass on the side of the road, and the man had a sign that said, “Will work for food.” It was really a sad sight. It was not only sad seeing them in that situation, but he said it was also sad that he didn’t have some extra money to give to them to help them out. $4 only went so far at the grocery store.

So, after this 30 second interlude, he drove away. But he didn’t get too far before the thought of passing that family and not doing anything got to him, forcing him to turn around and go back to that family. He drove to where he last saw them, and handed the father $2, which was half of what he had.

The young father graciously accepted the money with tears in his eyes. John drove away with a great feeling, knowing that he had helped out someone else who was worse off than he was, even though he now had $2 to shop for himself, and his two young children. I also forgot to mention that John’s young wife had recently passed away.

So he pulled into the parking lot of the grocery store, hoping that the milk or the bread, or both, would be on sale, allowing him to buy both for $2. As he got out of the car, his foot slipped on something. He looked down, and it was a $20 bill! He couldn’t believe it. He had given away $2, and the universe compensated him with an amount that was 10X that! He was blown away.

He went into the grocery store and bought not just the bread and milk, but some other desperately needed items. He went back to the family and gave them $5 more. He said he would never forget that incident, and stated that you can not out give the universe, no matter how hard you try. He then quoted a little rhyme:

“A man there was, and they called him mad,
The more he gave, the more he had.

I can attest to this 100%, because I have a story that will not only back this up, but that is even more astounding then the story I just mentioned above. And mind you, when I say astounding, I had nothing to do with it. It was all the workings of the universe.

MY STORY

Some years ago, I was at a gas station in LA getting gas at around 8pm, and this older man in a long wool overcoat came up to me and started talking to me. I’m always a little guarded when people do that, because once before I had a bum ask for some money for a reason that I later found was total BS (the money I gave him was supposed to fix his “problem”, but I saw him giving the same song and dance to someone else a few days later). But I always at least listen to them, if they look like decent people, which he did.

He was probably in his 80′s, and he didn’t have any teeth, which made it really difficult to understand him. He told me his story as I’m pumping gas, and after he was finished, I said, “I’m sorry. What did you say?” He asked me which part I didn’t understand, and I said, “All of it,” which was true. I hadn’t understood a word. He laughed and gave this big, warm, toothless smile, which brought down some of my defenses. I was getting the vibe that this guy was for real.

So he tried again…saying it more slowly, and trying to enunciate more. I was able to get the gist of the story. He was living in the senior home that was right next door, or close to the gas station where we were. He told me that his wife was in the hospital with cancer, and he just wanted to go see her. Oh, right. I forgot to mention that this was during the Christmas season. So it was especially important that he go and see her.

I could feel that he was being very genuine. Very real. Very real, indeed. All he needed was $6…$3 to get him there and then $3 to bring him back to the home via taxi. In LA, the Yellow Cab company have a special discount for seniors where they can go anywhere in the LA area for $3 each way. He told me all of this, by the way, and I believed him.

How could I turn down an older guy who simply wanted to go see his wife, who was dying of cancer, during the holidays. What kind of person would refuse to help out a fellow human being in a situation like that? Not me. So I reached in my pocket and took out my wallet. I counted out $6, and then added one more dollar and said to him, “Here. Here are $6, and then here’s one more for good luck.”

I can not put into words the expression that appeared on his face after I gave him the money. It was as if I had given him $1 million. Smiling ear to ear, he grabbed my hand, and shook it for about 30 seconds, and expressed his immense gratitude, saying some things that I didn’t understand, but I didn’t have to. I knew he was incredibly grateful.

I felt very good after doing that. Incredibly good, actually. I had brought two older love birds together, who didn’t have much time left together. You really can’t put a price on that. They say time is money, but time is more than money…much more.

As you might have guessed, the story does not end there. The very next day (did you get that? I said the very next day), I’m in the bank, walking toward the exit to go back to my car. The doors are glass doors, so I can see right through them, allowing me to see the entire small parking lot in back of the bank where my car is parked.

I see this big ass Cadillac-looking car in the middle of the two rows of cars that comprise the entire parking lot of the bank (again, it’s a small lot). My car is at the end of the row that’s on the left, closest to the bank door that I was walking toward.

The first thing that was a little off was that this car was not headed straight. It was just sitting there, diagonally positioned…with the engine ON. All of a sudden, I start to hear the car’s engine revving really high. Upon hearing this, I intuitively said, “Oh God.”

Seconds after, I hear wheels screeching, and I see his car whip around and slam into the back of my car. But that’s not all that happened. My car then smashed into the next car, which smashed into the next car, which hit the next car. He had created a domino-type accident. With one fell swoop, he managed to damage 4 cars.

So I go outside to see what happened, and an older man, who is around the same age as the guy who I gave money to the previous night, gets out of the car. The poor guy is shaking, and I’m not sure if it’s because he is in shock on account of what just happened, or he has a medical condition. He did have a cane, though.

So he takes out his wallet and gives me his info. You’ll never guess the name of the road where he lives…”Thrasher Road”! Believe that? He just finished “thrashing” 4 cars with one blow! Crazy.

In any case, he gave me his info, and I called his insurance company and made a claim. A week later, I had a check for $4400 in my hands! I found some guys who fixed my car for $900 (it was an older car that I owned years ago), so I was able to keep $3500!

Not only that…the exact spot where he hit my car, it had been hit before. I just hadn’t gotten around to fixing it yet, which means I was paid TWICE for damage done to the same area of my car. Amazing.

So I give an older gentleman $7 which allows him to go and see his wife, who is on her deathbed, during the holidays without expecting anything in return…just wanting to help out a fellow human being in a challenging and sad situation, and another guy around the same age returns the favor and creates a situation that nets me $3500.

Karma never ceases to amaze me. She is truly gifted at what she does.

And as John said, “you can not out give the universe.”

But don’t take Joe’s, John’s, or my word for it. Give it a shot yourself. Find someone who needs help and give it to them with no expectation of anything in return. Do it from the heart and because you want to, and see what happens. You just might be blown away like we were.

Here’s my review of a great interview with Steve Jobs conducted by All Things Digital:

I recently watched a really great interview with Steve Jobs that was conducted at the D8 – All Things Digital conference. You really get to peek inside his head and discover his core values for his business in this interview.

The main core value of Apple is to “build the best products for people.” He kept on saying that over and over throughout the interview, and he said it with such passion. It was great. It’s the foundation for the company. I love it when entrepreneurs display their passion for their values and their company. It shows that it’s not about the money for them. It’s about their vision for their business and what they stand for.

Another thing that I was really intrigued about was that Steve said that Apple is the “largest startup company in the world.” What he meant by that is that Apple is still structured as a startup. What does that mean? Well it means that is is an “incredibly collaborative company.” There are no committees. They have one person in charge of each department, and they trust that “their team will come through with their parts.”

I agree with setting up a company this way, and it’s not just because Apple is highly successful and that’s what they do. I just feel that the whole corporate structure is outdated and does not work in today’s society. People are tired of working for corporations that treat their employees like a number, and that don’t listen to them or their ideas. People want to feel that they are a part of something big, and that they are contributing and making a difference in the company.

Eben Pagan, a very successful Internet marketer, says that great people work for impact, not for money. They want to be involved with a company that is going to make a substantial difference in the world. They are not in it for the cash, because they have such talent, they can make great money no matter where they work. I agree 100%.

In the interview, Steve also explains what he does all day…what his day as CEO of Apple is like. I’m sure you want to know that, right? What does one of the most highly successful CEO’s in the world do all day? What does he do with his time? You’ll have to watch the interview to find out.

Steve: We started with the iPad FIRST. But then I realized we could make a phone out of the touchscreen technology we had developed, and we decided to go with that first and shelve the iPad until we “got our breath back” from the launch of the iPhone.

[Brilliant business choice since the iPhone accounts for almost 50% of their revenue! (46.6% to be exact)]

Business Lesson: ALWAYS be flexible enough to change your plans along the way, no matter how much time, effort, and focus you have put into the development of a certain product/service. If it makes better business sense to change plans, DO IT!

 
Business Lesson #7

Steve: Personal computers are going to be like trucks. They are still going to be around, but not many people are going to have them (watch the interview to see why Steve believes that)

Business Lesson: Always be focused on where things are going in your industry and plan accordingly

 
Business Lesson #8

Steve: We get 10,000 – 20,000 apps submitted to us each week, and we approve 95% of them within 7 days (Impressive!)

Business Lesson: Have things set up in your business to be ready to handle your success

 
Business Lesson #9

Steve: We originally disapproved of a political cartoon app because we had one rule: “You can’t defame people” [which I really admire]. However, that was one consequence of that rule that we did not see coming. So we made political cartoons the one exception.

Business Lesson: Always be willing to change the rules.

 
Business Lesson #10

Steve: We make mistakes along the way, and we fix them as fast as we can.

Business Lesson: You see, even the most successful companies in the world make a fair amount of mistakes. So don’t let making mistakes stop you from achieving your dreams. It is part of the process, and always will be no matter how successful you get.

 
Business Lesson #11

Steve: If you want to hire great people, you have to let them make a lot of the decisions.

Business Lesson: You must be willing to let your employees/team members make a lot of the decisions. People work best in an autonomous environment (check out the book “Drive” by Dan Pink for more on that). That’s how you hire and KEEP great people. Otherwise, they will not feel as if they are part of the team, nor will they feel like they are making a difference in the company, let alone the world. They’ll feel more like a puppet in a controlled environment in which they have no say. Consequently, they will jump ship and go to a company that does have an autonomous environment where they and the company will thrive.

 
Business Lesson #12

Steve: You have to be run by ideas, not hierarchy. The best idea must win, not the “best person” with the most power or seniority.

Business Lesson: In business, you have to be humble and be quick to recognize a great idea, no matter who it comes from. Reiterating what was said in Business Lesson #11 above, if you want to keep great people, you must appreciate their brilliance, use their ideas, and reward them for it.

I recently spent almost 4 hours with a multi-millionaire who started with nothing at age 42. All he had with him at the time was a cassette tape of a speech that Jim Rohn had made to a crowd of Shaklee distributors many years ago. He didn’t even have 20 cents to his name. He played that tape over and over again and told me that it was that tape that got him to where he is today.

He let me borrow that tape and I listened to it. It was pretty similar to Jim Rohn’s CD called, “Building Your Network Marketing Business.” So, if you want to hear what was on that tape, get that CD. It’s on iTunes.

In any respect, we shared many ideas, and one thing that he said that I was blown away by was the following:

You know, I have dealt with hundreds of thousands of people, and here is what I learned. Most people are not willing to do the work you need to do to become wealthy. For example, I created this manual where I explain exactly how I made $3.2 million in one year in my business. I could give this to 200,000 people and 4 of them would read it, 2 of them would apply what they learned, and 1 would be successful with it. It’s crazy, but it’s true.

I really could not believe that. But judging by how many people go to the library, take out a book on how to become wealthy, and actually apply what they learn and become successful, I would have to say what he said is quite true (a quick way to judge this is by looking at the statistic of the percentage of the population who actually have a library card). Sad, but true.

So, you really have to know who to spend your time with. Spend your time wisely, and don’t waste your time trying to convince someone to get in the business. As they say, “Amateurs sell. Professionals sort.” We don’t have time to convince. There is too much ground to cover.

However, there is nothing wrong with dripping on people that you have a gut feeling would do very well once they “got it.” Just don’t spend a lot of time dripping. A call here. A CD there. An event here.

The key is to talk to as many people as you can. Your message will eventually fall on the right people. Just play the numbers game, and be consistent with it, every day. Make it a habit. Once it becomes a habit, it will feel weird NOT to work on your business. They say it takes 21 days to create a habit. So, just do it for 21 days straight (you can take weekends off if you want to), and then see what happens.

• When? July 20th, 1969

• Apollo 11 stood 363 feet high on the launch pad, and was packed with 5.9 million pounds of fuel
• 80% of that fuel was burned just to “get it along” in the first 160 seconds of ignition for a journey that would send it 250,000 miles from Earth

The thing that really struck me was how it created such phenomenal momentum in such a short period of time. It was packed with 5.9 million pounds of fuel and “80% of that fuel was burned just to ‘get it along’ in the first 160 seconds of ignition for a journey that would send it 250,000 miles from earth”!

Did you get that? 80% of the 5.9 million pounds of fuel was burned during the first 160 seconds of a flight that would travel 250,000 miles! Talk about a blitz!

And did you also notice what kind of momentum that created? At 1 min 21 sec it was traveling at a speed of 2636 ft per second. At 7 min 39 sec it was going 3.55 miles per second! And at 11 min 40 seconds into the flight, it was traveling at a speed of 4.8 miles per second! That’s 17,280 miles per hour!

So, just use the same strategy in your business. If you want phenomenal momentum, then put phenomenal effort into your business in the beginning until it gains the momentum that Apollo 11 gained. Then you can kick back a little, if you so desire. However, then inertia comes into play.
