										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br>Rankings have to be taken with a grain of salt, and the THE global reputation rankings published this week make no exception (link in the comments).<br>This ranking methodology is based on processing results on large polls considering quality of education and of research.<br><br>13 Italian universities are in the top 300 reputation list, not too bad.<br>Of course, at the top of the list we have the truly global academic brands, and Italian universities start at position 91 (*)</p>

<p><br>Among the 13 Italian Universities in the top 300, 4 are in Tuscany, 3 in Lombardy, 2 in Piedmont.<br><br>(*) the original THE list does not indicate the exact rank after 100, but only the range (101-150 etc); I did some reverse engineering of the partial marks to compute the exact ranking.<br></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ogni anno alcuni ricercatori di Stanford, in collaborazione con Elsevier-Scopus, aggiornano la lista di 100mila scienziati che formano il top 2% in 176 discipline, calcolata utilizzando le citazioni degli ultimi 15 anni, estratte dal database Scopus. La lista è disponibile pubblicamente insieme alla metodologia di standardizzazione dei dati e ai codici utilizzati (<a href="https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/7">https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/7</a>).</p>



<p>La lista può essere usata per avere un colpo d’occhio della distribuzione degli scienziati presenti nelle università nazionali, guardando per ciascuna università il rapporto tra il numero di ricercatori presenti nella lista e il numero complessivo di docenti a tempo indeterminato nelle aree Physical and Engineering Sciences e Life Sciences individuate dallo European Research Council (corrispondenti alle aree CUN dalla 1 alla 9).</p>



<p>La tabella mostra una lista della università con almeno 400 docenti “tenured” nelle aree PE e LS, ordinata per la percentuale di ricercatori presenti nella lista Stanford-Elsevier.</p>

<p>Si apprezza nella lista una certa uniformità della qualità del sistema universitario nazionale, che riflette l’impianto generale del sistema e che presenta differenze relativamente piccole tra gli estremi della lista.</p>



<p>Ci sono università più piccole molto specializzate e scuole superiori che hanno percentuali maggiori, ma su numeri molto più piccoli e su uno spettro di discipline molto più concentrato.</p>



<p>Guardando l’Università di Pisa nel dettaglio, è interessante vedere che la seconda più alta percentuale di ricercatori nella top2% nella tabella mostrata in alto. Possiamo entrare un po’ di più nel dettaglio: la classifica Stanford-Elsevier valuta l’attività degli ultimi 15 anni, ma non conosce lo stato di servizio dei ricercatori. Dei 193 ricercatori dell’università di Pisa presenti nella lista, 66 non sono più in servizio, mentre 2 vanno aggiunti perché presenti con un’affiliazione diversa. Ne rimangono quindi 129 in servizio, distribuiti tra i vari dipartimenti. </p>



<p>Ci sono 9 dipartimenti con almeno il 10% di docenti nella top2%, in rapporto ai docenti a tempo indeterminato. Ci sono inoltre 2 docenti nel settore Social Sciences and Humanities che sono presenti nella lista “top2%”, sebbene in settori che in Italia classifichiamo come non bibliometrici.</p>

<p>The <a></a>theory and the algorithms were known since few decades, but deep learning only started to work when computing hardware became sufficiently advanced to enable the training of a complex network in a reasonable time (the famous AlexNet paper).</p>



<p>Second lesson: hardware is not enough. A properly optimized software stack can lead to performance improvements of orders of magnitude.</p>

We can help with the preparation of the proposal. The deadline is <strong>September 13th</strong>, 2023 so please contact me ASAP if your are interested. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Il 28 dicembre sono stati selezionati dall’ANVUR i 180 dipartimenti eccellenza delle università statali per il quinquennio 2023-2027, valutati sulla base valutazione della ricerca svolta nel quinquennio 2015-2019 e di un progetto scientifico, organizzativo e didattico per il periodo 2023-2027. I dipartimenti delle università statali sono oggi 787: 350 sono stati selezionati per la seconda fase (con un massimo di 15 per ogni università), da cui poi sono stati scelti i 180 vincitori.</p>



<p>Questa è la lista delle università ordinata per il numero dei dipartimenti di eccellenza. Per chiarezza è indicato il numero di tutti i dipartimenti di ciascuna università e il rapporto tra il numero dei dipartimenti di eccellenza e il numero dei dipartimenti di ciascuna università.</p>



<p>C’è poi da aggiungere che il meccanismo fa sì che ogni università abbia con alta probabilità almeno un dipartimento di eccellenza, per cui nell’ultima colonna ho corretto il rapporto escludendo un dipartimento (sia al numeratore sia al denominatore) per correggere.</p>

<p>Colpiscono subito in positivo Milano Statale, Napoli Federico II e Milano Bicocca, poi Trento e Verona, abbastanza bene Pisa, Bologna, Padova, Firenze, e poi tanti fermi a uno, relativamente facile. Peccato per l’università della Calabria, che nell’altro quinquennio aveva fatto abbastanza bene. </p>



<p>Guardiamo la stessa lista orientata in base al rapporto tra i dipartimenti di eccellenza e i dipartimenti totali. In verde le università sopra la media nazionale, in rosso quelli sotto.</p>

<p>Ordinata in questo modo, possiamo apprezzare il risultato ottimo di Milano-Bicocca, con più della metà dei dipartimenti di eccellenza. IUAV e Sant’Anna fanno en plein, ma su numeri molti piccoli. Molto bene anche Verona, Ca’ Foscari, Trento, Napoli Federico II, e Milano Statale (&gt;40%).</p>



<p>Menzione particolare alle grandi università che hanno superato i 10 dipartimenti di eccellenza: Federico II, La Sapienza, Milano Statale, Bologna e Padova, perché comunque in fase due non si potevano presentare più di 15 dipartimenti, sebbene scelti tra i più forti.</p>



<p>Due riflessioni finali:</p>



<p>A livello del Paese è importante potenziare il sistema universitario al sud: si vede bene che l’unica grande università del sud e isole sopra la media è la Federico II, che è da anni su un percorso virtuoso.</p>



<p>L’altra cosa importante è che università relativamente giovani possono crescere in fretta e bene, raggiungendo dimensioni medie e qualità elevata, se guardiamo in primis Milano Bicocca (fondata nel 1998) e anche Trento (fondata nel 1962).</p>



<p>Post Scriptum:</p>



<p>Un commento per Pisa: A caldo ho detto &#8220;abbastanza bene&#8221;: 7 è un buon punto di partenza rispetto ai soli 2 ottenuti per il quinquennio precedente (a loro merito confermati in questa edizione). E’ un po’ sopra la media nazionale, siamo allineati al risultato di Bologna e Padova (che hanno fatto un po’ peggio della prima edizione). Testimonia un lavoro intenso sulla ricerca fatto nei 5 anni passati e una maggiore attenzione presentata alla definizione del progetto e alla VQR.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s a lot of research activity on new electronic and optoelectronic devices based on vertical heterostructures of 2D materials, because there are many materials available and even more combinations.</p>



<p>To accelerate materials selection and to support experiments it is important to be able to simulate their behaviour in a way that is quantitatively predictive and computationally doable.</p>



<p>This is the reason for our new paper on Phys. Rev. Applied: <a href="https://journals.aps.org/prapplied/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.18.034045" data-type="URL" data-id="https://journals.aps.org/prapplied/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.18.034045">Multiscale Pseudoatomistic Quantum Transport Modeling for van der Waals Heterostructures (pdf available)</a></p>



<p>Kudos to Giuseppe Lovarelli, Gaetano Calogero, and Gianluca Fiori.</p>



<p>In the paper, we propose a computationally effective and physically sound method to model electron transport in 2D van der Waals heterostructures, based on a multiscale approach and quasiatomistic Hamiltonians.</p>



<p>This is something important for us in the Quantum Engineering for Machine Learning project, where we use devices based on lateral and vertical heterostructures of 2D materials to demonstrate analog neural networks. For example, we use the method for computing the leakage current through the vertical stack of an analog non volatile memory.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Questo il testo di una lettera che ho mandato a tutti i colleghi dell&#8217;Università stamani (ormai questo blog sta diventando un diario pubblico): </em></p>



<p>Care e cari</p>



<p>Scrivo per ringraziare calorosamente tutti coloro che hanno votato per me nel primo turno, apprezzando in modo concreto la mia proposta per l&#8217;Università. Sono voti belli e importanti per me e per un Ateneo diverso e preparato per affrontare le sfide del presente e del futuro.</p>



<p>Ringrazio in modo particolare coloro che hanno sostenuto in modo pubblico la mia candidatura, testimoniando vicinanza ideale e personale. Sono partito da solo e siamo arrivati in tanti, con eccezionali compagni di strada.</p>



<p>I risultati del primo turno (Zucchi: 683; Marroni: 497; Iannaccone: 439) sono però chiari e mi assumo tutta la responsabilità di non essere stato capace di raccogliere un numero maggiore di consensi.</p>



<p>Da un&#8217;analisi del voto, emerge comunque chiaro un forte segnale di cambiamento, anche per il voto in direzione di Riccardo Zucchi, il cui programma finale contiene alcune analisi e proposte presenti anche nella mia piattaforma, seppur con misure e accenti differenti.</p>



<p>Ho quindi incontrato il Prof. Zucchi dopo il voto e siamo giunti insieme alla conclusione che le nostre proposte di governo possono convergere e integrarsi, nello spirito di un rilancio dell&#8217;Ateneo.</p>



<p>In vista del secondo turno abbiamo quindi raggiunto il seguente accordo, descritto in un comunicato stampa diffuso stamani (<a href="http://www.iannaccone.org/wp-content/uploads/comunicato_stampa_iannaccone_zucchi.pdf">pdf qui</a>): ritirerò la mia candidatura per le elezioni del rettore e sosterrò Riccardo Zucchi, assumendo nel caso di una sua vittoria il ruolo di prorettore vicario. Definiremo inoltre congiuntamente squadra e indirizzo di governo.</p>



<p>Credo che sia il modo migliore per riuscire a trasformare in realtà una parte della visione e delle iniziative che ho proposto e discusso con molti di voi e a modificare in una direzione positiva la rotta del nostro ateneo. Per questo motivo vi invito a votare per Riccardo Zucchi al secondo turno.</p>

<p>A new paper is out: <em>All-Analog Silicon Integration of Image Sensor and Neural Computing Engine for Image Classification</em>, a collaboration among Università della Calabria, Quantavis and Università di Pisa.</p>



<p>A <a></a>single silicon chip demonstrator including image sensors and a low-resolution image classification neural network, all based on analog computing and signal processing on standard CMOS technology.</p>



<p>The rationale is that if we can suppress energy- and time-inefficient operations, such as analog-to-digital conversion and data transmission, we can build a cognitive image sensor, with embedded classification capabilities for applications in which low power and small volume are critical, such as wearable and mobile healthcare electronics or autonomous microrobots and drones.</p>



<p>In parallel, we investigate this concept for a technology based on 2D Materials in the H2020 QUEFORMAL project (Quantum Engineering for Machine Learning <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.queformal.eu" target="_blank">https://www.queformal.eu</a>) , and for sensors in harsh environments using silicon at very high temperatures in the Charm ECSEL project <a href="https://charm-ecsel.eu/project/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">https://charm-ecsel.eu/project/</a>.</p>
