The Blue Bunny Orange Dream Bar got the 5 kiss seal of approval, while the Sweet Freedom Strawberry Lites Ice Cream Bar only got three stars. When I saw the Blue Bunny Health Smart Fudge & Vanilla Fudge Bar in a vending machine, I decided to get it and see whether it fell in the "excellent" or "so-so" category.

The individual bar I bought was $1.75 (horrendously expensive!) but that's what you get from buying it from a vending machine! I would think that the price for a box is much more reasonable. I reluctantly parted with my $$ and selected my ice cream bar. The packaging was very appealing, depicting a large, vanilla-fudge swirled bar; unlike so many other products, this was a realistic depiction. It was certainly much less icy than some other fudge bars I've had, and the chocolate was rich and not artificial tasting. Overall, I was highly impressed with how creamy and chocolaty this treat was, especially for a fat-free, no sugar added product.
... The Slow Churned results in a reduced calorie and fat ice cream that still tastes delicious and creamy. While I do like all kinds of ice cream, I favor ice cream that's more creative than just plain vanilla or chocolate, so when I looked around the ice cream aisle, I decided to try Edy's Slow Churned Double Fudge Brownie Ice Cream.

This ice cream is all about the chocolate with a chocolate ice cream base for the fudge ribbon and little pieces of brownie that are mixed in. The chocolate ice cream is nice and creamy, and the fudge ribbon was pretty but didn't really add much to the overall flavor. I liked chewing on the brownie pieces, but they were too small for my taste. Overall, the double fudge brownie flavor was good but not great.
... There's more. I eat it, slowly, savoring every rich, delicious bite one mouthful at a time. But alas, the calories, the fat - yikes! This makes it only a special occasion type of thing (that and the fact that not just any cheesecake will satisfy my palate). My love of good cheesecake is seconded by my love of ice cream & frozen yogurt. Combining the two to make a delicious dessert - well, that would mean that Blue Bunny Strawberry Cheesecake Fat Free Frozen Yogurt would have a lifelong fan.

Blue Bunny - I love the sleek, elliptical shape of the packaging. The frozen yogurt does indeed tasted like cheesecake, and there was just the right amount of strawberry swirl. Every now and then, I tasted a little more iciness than creaminess, but the frozen yogurt was fairly creamy considering it's fat free.
... Fried Ice Cream on the packaging says, "cinnamon caramel flavored light ice cream with a honey caramel swirl & cinnamon sugar tostada pieces." I've never had real fried ice cream, but from what I understand, the ice cream is typically fried in a starchy shell. Obviously, the execution of this supermarket ice cream differs from the real thing, but I was still willing to give it a shot.

The ice cream base is excellent, very creamy with plenty of caramel flavor but very subtle, if any, flavor from the cinnamon. The Tostada pieces make this ice cream particularly unique, adding an extra dimension to the texture. They had a bit of a stale chew to them, but their presence was distinct nonetheless. I liked this ice cream, but the folks over at Snackerrific seemed to love it while at Onsecondscoop they did not.
...
Edy's describes this as, "a refreshing and original flavor that combines white mint light ice cream and Thin Mint cookies" and they are spot on. The mint ice cream base is mild but amped up by the Thin Mint cookie crumbs. I have never seen so many cookie crumbs mixed into an ice cream before in my life. In fact, there are even pockets of Thin Mint crumbs within the ice cream so that you can also get that fresh cookie crumb texture ... so minty, cookie-licious and yum .
... Since I like American Idol, creativity, and light ice cream, I had tried a number of the ice cream candidates, but this flavor really is quite appealing.

The million dollar question to me was, would this actually taste like cake ... and ice cream? Oh yes it did! It's difficult to describe the taste of the cake flavor, but think yellow cake and the bright yellow color certainly conveys that, and the light blue frosting ribbon provides additional sweetness. To top it all off, there are huge, crunchy sprinkles that are like flattened chocolate chips but have lots of color to them. This feels like such a guilty treat, so thankfully Edy's slow churned this bad boy to get rid of "1/2 the fat and 1/3 less calories in regular ice cream."
... The type that is always trying out new flavors? Or do you stick the tried and true? I'm the former, always intrigued by different flavors of ice cream and especially curious when it's lower in calories and fat. Breyers Double Churn French Chocolate Fat Free Ice Cream sounded yummy, so it got picked to be my flavor of the week.

Since this ice cream was fat free, my expectations on taste weren't too high, but I ended up really liking it. I don't know what makes the flavor French chocolate since the ingredients look the same as other (fat free) chocolate ice cream, but it's definitely tastes chocolaty with a mild sweetness and lots of creaminess. The light texture left me feeling refreshed and not weighted down like the heavier ice creams on the market.
... Instead of a burger, I have learned to love turkey or black bean burgers. Instead of steak, I will serve up a seasoned chicken breast. However, until I ran across Ball Park Fat Free Beef Franks, I had never found a good substitute for a nice, juicy hot dog. I had pretty much decided that the essential ingredient for hot dogs was fat, so I was very excited to try this new find.

I wasn't terribly impressed with the long ingredient list, but, hey, what can you expect from a hot dog? The taste, however, more than made up for the unnatural ingredients. I actually popped these suckers on my George Foreman Grill and cooked them that way. I put each dog on a slice of whole wheat bread, and was good to go. Even though they are not as good as the full fat Zweigle's dogs, I was sufficiently impressed, especially to the tune of 180 calories for two hot dogs!! (I used 40-calorie light wheat bread in lieu of a bun).
... There's more. I spotted Kashi Veggie Medley Pocket Bread in the supermarket, and since this was new to me, but looked like a healthy option, I decided to try it. My enthusiasm waned when I saw the price tag, but serendipity intervened, and I got a great coupon from my market, making it a more realistic purchase for me.

The pocket bread looks like an elongated dinner roll and was denser than I expected. After microwaving, I cut it in half so that it matched the picture on the box. The thick, soft outer covering of bread, which is made from 7 whole grains and sesame, was very satisfying. It's full to overflowing with vegetables that make up the filling, including red peppers, onions, zucchini, carrots, broccoli, and white beans. The balsamic basil sauce is fairly mild but tasty, and the entire pocket bread is vegan.
... There's more.

Pizza is one of my top 5 favorite foods. Because of this, I am determined to find nutritious varieties that will fit into my healthy dietary regime, without sacrificing on taste. When I first saw the description of Kashi Sicilian Veggie Pizza, I knew I had to find it. Kashi says, "Experience taste inspirations from the south of Italy with this new stone fired pizza. This pizza blends all-natural ingredients and appealing flavors with its caramelized onions, grilled eggplant, fire roasted red peppers and kale that lay on top of a balsamic infused white bean tomato sauce."

Kashi wasn't lying. The Kashi 7 Whole Grains & Sesame crust is tried and true - soft and doughy, with an irresistible crunch taking emphasis. The cheese is not missed here because there is so much flavor going on. The caramelized onions, eggplant and roasted red peppers add not only their own unique flavor, but also a delightful textural element; while the subtle, yet flavorful balsamic-infused white bean tomato sauce completely makes the dish. The curly kale contributes to the colorful appearance, but does not add too much to your palate taste-wise. Overall, I feel that Kashi really stepped it up and created a great addition to the frozen food market for vegans and non-vegans alike.
...

When I read the review of Amy's Kitchen Shepherd's Pie, I was intrigued - a wholesome, healthy microwaveable meal? I had to try one of these products for myself. Since the Amy's Mexican Tamale Pie was on sale for $2.79 at my local grocery store, I decided to go with that hoping it would be just as good as.

The picture on the front was appealing, and the ingredient list was pretty simple (94% organic), a mix of mostly pinto beans, tomato puree, corn, zucchini, onions, cornmeal). The first thing you should probably know is that this is definitely not large enough to be considered a meal; however, it does make for a good-sized mini-meal. I popped the tamale pie into the microwave to test it out. Unfortunately, I had a lot of trouble getting it to heat thoroughly - frustrating! I found that the sides would boil up and threaten to spill, while the center remained frozen. However, after a bit of trial and error, I was able to get the pie heated thoroughly, mostly by turning the power on the microwave down a bit. When it was finally heated, I took the pie out of the microwave to let it cool for a few minutes.

I cut into the corn meal polenta topping with a spoon and took a bite. The combination of polenta, veggies, and beans was tasty without being overly flavored or spiced. The beans were definitely my favorite part as the polenta was a bit chewy, but then again I'm not a huge polenta fan to begin with. The topping did pair well with the veggies and beans, though, so it wasn't a big deal.
... There's more. (Photo Credit: Daily Moderation)
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say "Amy's Kitchen rocks my socks." I don't think I've ever disliked any of their products ... I even like the much maligned Amys Tofu Scramble. As much as I love Amy's though, the cost keeps me from buying this brand too often. We're talking anywhere from $4.99 to $6.00 EACH. The pizzas, however, I find to be a fairly good buy. Publix carries them for $5.19 and they're a decent size with three good sized slices each. My current favorite is the glorious Spinach Pizza.

This pizza features a wonderful chunky tomato sauce sitting atop a crispy on the outside, tender on the inside whole wheat crust, which is then topped with a blend of feta and mozzarella cheese, basil, a little onion and spinach. You can taste both the feta and the mozzarella, and though there is a lot of spinach in the topping it's not overpowering at all. Amy's pizzas aren't recommended for the microwave but take a mere 15 minutes or so to bake in the oven depending on how crispy you like your crust and how brown you like the top to be.

Truly, I have nothing negative to say about the taste of this product; the crust, the sauce and the toppings are all exceptional. Now admittedly, I am a big cooked-spinach-in-stuff kind of person, but I really think that even those of you that don't like spinach might like this pizza. Case in point: my six year old who would rather gouge her own eyes out than eat anything green, LOVES these. "Mommy, can I have some of that spinach pizza?" I feel like I'm hallucinating every time I hear her say those words - who are you and what have you done with my child?!
...
Despite the picture on the box, there is a lot of sauce, but it really works with the noodles. While the noodles were plentiful, there could have been more tuna. I liked how the breadcrumbs provided an additional dimension to the dish. Altogether, the tuna noodle gratin was pretty hearty. But lets face it, this is something anyone, no matter the level of your cooking skills, could make at home.
... It is described as having, "tender angel hair pasta in a delicious marinara sauce with spinach, yellow and green zucchini." Indeed, the angel hair pasta had a nice texture and worked well with the marinara sauce, which had a nice kick to it. The vegetables included spinach and yellow and green zucchini, which added color and texture to the dish. The brief description of this dish on the front of the box puts "delicious marinara" in bold, and while I wouldn't necessarily go that far, I thought the meal overall was quite good.

Over at Freezer Burns, they thought it decent too, though it "fell short of delicious."
... I had seen it so many times before and thought about buying it, but now I have finally done it.

The name of this entree sounds lackluster, but this entree is quite delectable. The white rice worked really well with the sliced almonds and veggies, which included broccoli, green beans, and carrots. The portion of chicken was rather generous, but the unifying element was the sauce; quite tasty and reminiscent of a sweet soy sauce, but perhaps nearing the threshold of being too sweet depending on your palate.
...
