It's not a particularly flashy cereal, but when I saw the Golden Maple, I knew I had to try it.

These Quaker Golden Maple Oatmeal Squares are very similar in structure to the original, but with the new flavor, they have carved out their own niche. When I opened the bag inside, I could instantly smell the maple scent. It reminded me of other maple syrup-inspired cereals, but I knew this cereal was much healthier for me with whole oat flour as the main ingredient.

Serving Size: 1 cup (56 grams)
There is a mild sweetness but not overwhelmingly so. Because the squares are pretty thick and crunchy (did I mention ... thick), they work well with milk and have amazing crunch in the bowl, or as a snack by themselves. This is another win from Quaker

Each cup provides 210 calories, 18% of the daily value for fiber, 12 grams of sugars and 6 grams of protein. There is also a host of vitamins and minerals, most notably 90% DV iron and 100% DV folic acid. Sure there are other lower calorie cereals out there, but trust me, this one is filling, nutritious, has a sane ingredients list and can;t be beat as a snack.
I just love the stuff and while I have my favorites, I still keep an eagle eye out to try new ones.Wild Harvest Natural Wholesome Raisin Bran Cereal seemed to call out to me when I was at the grocery store on my last trip. The packaging design made me pay attention, but it was the nutrition claims on the front of the box that made me decide to try it: 24 whole grains per serving, excellent source of fiber and good source of iron ... why not! I must say that Raison Bran is not my favorite type of cereal (it might be my least favorite), but hey, there must be a good brand out there somewhere - and this could be it.

I have to admit - this stuff is good - hard to believe I'm saying this about Raisin Bran, or maybe my taste buds have evolved to appreciate the more nutritious cereals. The flakes are perfectly crunchy and lightly sweet. The raisins are deliciously plump and provide a nice change in texture from the crunchy cereal.

Each cup provides 180 calories, 28% of the daily value for fiber and 5 grams of protein. The ingredients are all natural and the taste is great. What more could you want from a cereal?!
... There's more. I was thrilled with their Buckwheat Berry Pancakes and when I found their Whole Grain variety on sale for a mere $1.00 at Wal-Mart, I figured they would be worth it (and are they ever)!

Just like the Buckwheat Berry variety, a serving is 2 extremely dense pancakes that remain delicious, despite losing their heat quickly due to the thin structure. These scrumptious, fluffy and dense whole wheat discs seem to be the perfect base for peanut butter, jam, butter spray or, inevitably, syrup. Although I had nothing to top them with, I was still enthralled. Each bite is hearty and lightly sweetened, complementing a number of flavors or making for a deliciously "carb-y" snack that can satisfy most any taste buds, anytime of the day. These are the healthiest bang for your buck of a pancake that I have ever encountered. ... There's more. However, the chocolate variety contained saturated fat, which I generally like to keep out of my breakfasts, so Honey Nut it was (plus Honey Nut makes for a great cereal). Kellogg's says this cereal is made with 100% whole grains and this "lightly sweetened whole-grain wheat cereal" is nearly half the size of regular Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal (one of my complaints about the regular one is that the size is a little too big for me).

The traditional spun wheat is shrunken into bite sized pieces (about the size of a sugar cube) and topped with a layer of sweet honey/caramel flavored icing (though some of the little bites are naked). At first, they seemed a little stale in texture; but after a few bites, the whole shredded wheat thing grew on me and I began to really enjoy them. The little woven squares soften up with a splash of milk and create a delicious bowl of breakfast with the perfect crunchy to soft ratio. On the other hand, I have grown to enjoy them on-the-go, straight from a snack-sized baggie too. ... There's more. I really like the mini-wheat squares cereal for their heartiness and ability to hold on to the milk when eaten together. The coloring seems a little strange on a cereal that is usually so simple, but it grew on me. I ate this more as a snack than for breakfast, and they were quite filling (the nature of the shredded wheat results in a lot of crumbs when you bite into the cereal when it's eaten as a snack). ... Today, however, I am much more conscious about calories and nutrition. Now, I try to eat something filling for breakfast that will not leave me famished within an hour. I still love my occasional sweet tarts though, and so I was excited to see that Fiber One tried to "healthyfy" them ... somewhat.

I picked up Fiber One Brown Sugar Cinnamon Toaster Pastry and couldn't help but compare the nutritional values to Kellogg's Whole Grain Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop Tarts. There isn't much difference nutritionally, as both have 5 grams of fiber, but Fiber One has 2 grams more sugar and 10 fewer calories, and Kellogg's has 2 grams less protein.

The ingredients are also similar except Fiber One uses whole grain wheat flour and Kellogg's uses a combination of whole wheat and enriched flour. They both use various sweeteners (corn syrup, HFCS and brown sugar).
... There's more. However, it's not really conducive to throwing in a bag to snack on, because the fiber twigs, soy protein grahams, and honey-toasted puffs are a little too small to be easily picked up. Kashi Heart to Heart Honey Toasted Oat Cereal, on the other hand, is the perfect finger food (and it tastes pretty darn good too).

How can I begin to describe this?! It's like Cheerios, sweetened and on steroids - the rings are really big and crunchy, and there are cute, oaty hearts interspersed with the O's. I found the crunch to be very nice, especially since it meant that the cereal didn't get soggy quickly in milk, but I know some people may find it to be overwhelming. This cereal is sweetened with evaporated cane juice and honey for a pleasing but not overwhelming sweetness,
... My favorites include Kashi GoLean Crunch and Heart to Heart cereals, but as with anything else, I'm always open to trying new flavors. I discovered Kashi Vive Probiotic Digestive WellnessToasted Graham & Vanilla Cereal while browsing the cereal offerings on FreshDirect.com (a New York grocery delivery service), and was sufficiently intrigued enough to spend a whopping $4.39 on a (12 ounce) box!

Kashi describes this cereal as having, "crunchy graham twigs, touched with a hint of sweetness, lightly toasted flakes complete with our original Seven Whole Grains and Sesame, and vanilla dipped rice crisps, making the perfect combination of crisp and crunch." Along with this is a myriad of health claims. Eat it, and you will supposedly have greater Balance (from active probiotics and ginger), Purification (from fiber and natural broccoli extract), and Strength (from calcium and vitamin D).
...

November and December seem to be the most challenging time to maintain a healthy diet. Halloween, Thanksgiving AND Christmas - it's not easy to get through. That said, it all starts with a plan. Lots of veggies this week to counteract that god-awful Halloween candy that might mysteriously make it's way into my tummy.

Breakfast: Mon - Fri: Quaker (Old Fashioned) Oatmeal - as you can see, I don't mix it up a lot during the week, except maybe by changing the toppings. I make mine on the stove-top with half water and half Blue Diamond Almond Milk (usually).

Sat: Spinach Omelet - my favorite kind.
Sun: Pancakes (using Quaker Oatmeal Pancake Mix) & Jennie-O Extra Lean Turkey Bacon.
...
