The paintings done during the Carousel at Cenviarte will be auctioned. The paintings were done by professional artists, chancellors from other campuses, students, faculty and other collaborators.  All the proceeds from this auction will go to the Scholarship Fund. The auction starts at $75.00 (plus taxes).  Anyone who wants to participate in the auction must send their offers by e-mail to mjaulet@inter.edu.  Please indicate the number of the painting you are bidding for and the amount you are offering. Upon receipt of the offer you will be notified by e-mail if your bid is below or above the highest offer. The auction ends on May 10, 2012.

The Part II examination, entitled “Patient Assessment and Management” (PAM), is an expanded version of the PAM examination that was previously a section of Part III. Beginning December 2009, PAM will comprise all of new Part II and will no longer be a component of Part III.

The existing student eligibility requirements will remain the same for new Part II; that is, being midway through the fourth academic year. Therefore, the targeted administration (i.e., the administration that most students take when they become eligible) will remain in December. There will continue to be two opportunities to take Part II prior to graduation, as there will be an additional administration in April.

The Fellow would likely see patients 4.5 days per week (M-F, no weekends, no call), with a high mix of specialty/medical contact lens patients (I’m currently around 70% medical vs. 30% elective when I’m in clinic).  Opportunities to collaborate and participate with Ophthalmology in Cornea, Comprehensive and other tertiary ophthalmology specialties on a daily basis.

This would be a great learning opportunity for those new grads who are seeking a practice mode that includes a team approach and regular collaboration with Cornea specialist or in a tertiary referral center.

The Yale School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science has scheduled this conference to be held on September 24, 2010 at Water’s Edge Conference Center in Westbrook, CT. The Yale School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of global blindness, affecting nearly 2.5 million Americans. In the past decade, new advances in diagnostic, medical, and surgical treatments have led to greater patient awareness and demand for increased quality of care. This course is designed to educate clinicians regarding innovative techniques to improve care to patients afflicted with this disease. Sessions in epidemiology and diagnosis, imaging, research, medical and laser management, and surgical management of glaucoma will be presented by world-renowned leaders in the field of ophthalmology.

The information provided at this conference will enable participants to:

• State recent technological advances in surgical treatment of glaucoma
• Describe new diagnostic and therapeutic advances that have implications for care of patients with glaucoma
• Elucidate the types of imaging that are useful for diagnosis of glaucoma
• Define the optimal IOP range for patients with glaucoma
• Determine the most efficacious therapy for glaucoma based on patient presentation
• Describe current research leading to new and potential future treatments for glaucoma

APPOINTMENT OF DR. ANGEL ROMERO

It is a pleasure to inform that Dr. Angel Romero has been appointed Director of Academic Affairs of the School of Optometry.

This is a new position in the current administrative structure of the School. Since the basic science and clinica1 science departments were eliminated, this position wil1 dea1 with the academic-administrative management of the basic science and clinical science courses; also it will give support to the Dean of Academic Affairs in other matters.

As part of the academic team, Dr. Romero will bring leadership in a variety of academic issues including among others, the organization, development, implementation and fol1ow up of a new academic curriculum, which should be implemented in august 2011.

The NBEO Board of Directors understands and regrets the undeserved anxiety suffered by those Candidates who took their Part I exams in honest, ethical fashion and yet have had to endure the postponement of Score release due to the requisite investigation.

In response to comments that have come to the attention of the Board, Part I Scores will be released on Tuesday in as timely a fashion as possible under extraordinarily trying circumstances. The probability of a cheating scheme came to the NBEO’s attention in late March and early April. Because the NBEO mission is to provide state optometry boards with valid test scores that are used to determine qualification for licensure, the decision to react to the affront on protected, copyrighted NBEO examination material was imperative and immediate.

Since then, the NBEO has been continuously engaged in an extensive and thorough process of investigation, analysis and decision-making. The NBEO is respectful of the Candidate angst over the delay in releasing scores. Throughout the process, the NBEO has striven to reach the point of score release as soon as possible, while remaining true to its overarching duty to conduct a thorough and fair investigation to ensure the validity of test scores.

The National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO), announced that the Board of Directors has placed a hold on the release of Part I scores which had been scheduled for May 5, 2010. The National Board is postponing the release of scores pending an investigation into evidence of possible cheating by a significant number of exam candidates. Scores will not be released until the investigation has been completed. 

No additional information will be available telephonically or email through the NBEO office. Instead, candidates periodically should check the “NEWS and NOTES” section of the NBEO website for score release updates.

The earliest possible website update regarding the Board-conducted cheating investigation and the availability of Part I ABS scores will be June 9, 2010.

The Registration Deadline for the August 2010 administration of Part I ABS will be extended beyond the currently published date of June 1, 2010. A new deadline will be posted once scores have been released.

Toda persona que esté interesada en darle un último adiós a nuestra compañera podrá hacerlo. Estaremos utilizando el vehículo oficial de la institución para este propósito, por lo que le solicitamos confirmar antes de las 12:00 pm.  Se estarán creando dos grupos, uno para que nos acompañe en el Servicio Religioso  y otro hasta su última morada en el Cementerio.

A native of Charleston, S.C., Dr. Donovan earned her bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston and her optometry degree from the InterAmerican University School of Optometry in Puerto Rico. In 2002, she received the ASVO (Association for Volunteer Services in Optometry) Award from the IAU School of Optometry. She currently resides in Mt. Pleasant.

Joshua Corben, OD, a Santa Clarita Valley optometrist was recently named Young Optometrist of the Year for 2008 by the California Optometric Association (COA) during its annual House of Delegates meeting in Sacramento, California.

Dr. Corben received his Doctorate of Optometry in 2002 from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry. He is currently employed at Michael A. Corben, OD, Inc., in Newhall, CA, where he conducts all facets of primary eye care including contact lenses, low vision, and pediatric optometry.

This year’s program asks students to create projects in any format that demonstrate an understanding of healthy sight. Projects can include but are not limited to research papers, presentations, videos, posters or community outreach. We encourage your students to get creative. For example, they can show us how well they would integrate Healthy Sight Counseling — Vision Care, Vision Wear or Education — into everyday practice, or even describe their rote in patient care.

We are looking for a motivated, new graduate to fill a full-time (forty hour, 5 days per week) position in a busy location, starting August 1st (possibly sooner). Knowledge in coding is preferable, however; we are willing to give a crash course on how to medically bill. We are offering either a guaranteed salary or a percentage based wage .

The position is available in West Burlington Iowa. Our company, Child and Family EyeCare, P.C., rents space from three Wal-Mart locations.

All three locations are extremely busy and we need a full time doctor to help us out. We are offering to pay a lot more than private locations in Iowa can offer a new grad ($100,000 or a percentage based compensation). It is a great opportunity to sharpen their skills while paying off a large portion of student debt.

Call for 2009 Scholarship Applications

The Lucille and Edward R. Roybal Foundation is soliciting applications for its Public Health Scholarships to be awarded in the Fall of 2009.

DEADLINE: Applications must be postmarked or dispatched by delivery service on/before the deadline of Friday, May 1, 2009; and, sent to the Lucille and Edward R. Roybal Foundation at 5253 E. Beverly Boulevard, East Los Angeles, CA 90022-2020.

Requirements:

• Hispanic Students in their Junior or Senior year or in a Graduate Program of an accredited College or University in Pharmacy, Optometry, Nursing, or Public Health;
• A minimum grade-point-average of 2.5; 
• A commitment to serve the interests of low-income Latino communities in the United States; and, 
• Financial need.

The purpose of the Roybal Foundation Scholarship Program is to provide scholarships to Hispanic Students in their Junior or Senior year or in a Graduate Program of an accredited College or University who are pursuing public health careers and wish to serve the interest of low-income Spanish-speaking communities in the United States.

The Roybal Foundation offers scholarships in four areas: Optometry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Public Health-related programs. Individual scholarships will be in the amount of $5,000 for graduate students and $2,500 for undergraduate students.

The same will be as follows:

• From Monday 11 to Thursday May 14
• From Monday 18 to Thursday May 21
• Tuesday, May 26 (only that day)

All these days the schedule will be from 7:00am - 11:00pm.
Fridays and Sundays the schedule is the same as always.

Durante mi ausencia, estoy designando a Edwin Hernández, Decano de Administración como decano interino de la Escuela.

The qualifications of Dr. José De Jesús include almost 20 years of teaching experience in which he has served as a faculty member of the IAUPR School of Optometry and The New England College of Optometry. His academic formation consists of an OD degree from the IAUPR School of Optometry and a Master Degree (MA) in Biomedical Sciences from The Caribbean Central University School of Medicine of Puerto Rico.

Our academic program faces a coming era of new challenges and developments. As part of a team, Dr. De Jesus will bring leadership to the academic program and successfully contribute to attain the goals of the School of Optometry.
