IPL 2010 Auction Review: Pollard, Bond sell for top dollar; Pakistan players ignored!

The third Instalment of the Indian Premier League got a kick start with the player auction process that generated a fair bit of hysteria and gave a major fillip to Lalit Modi and his band of merry men. The auctioning process (as compared to the year before) reflected some better prepared team owners, who had already come with their primary and secondary plans in place. There was selective bidding, in the sense that teams knew beforehand the players they were going to bid for and the players they believed would make a major difference to their setup.

The surprise story of the day was the case of Pakistan's posse of players, who despite their good credentials in the shortest form of the game were ignored by team owners and not even one name in the rather long and distinguished list attracted any interest. A possible reason for this dubious ‘non selection' rests with the acrimony that already exists between the two boards (BCCI and PCB) following the withdrawal of Pakistan players from last year's event. Teams were left high and dry without some of their best players and the owners probably decided to make best use of what little funds were available to buy players who are a certainty to be available for the event.

It would be fair to expect though when the re-auction from scratch takes place in 2010, proven match winners of the calibre of Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir, Sohail Tanveer, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Mohammad Aamer, Umar Gul, Lou Vincent et al will definitely re-ignite the purse strings of the IPL team owners.

The headlines of the day were dominated by the triumvirate of Kieron Pollard ($750,000), Shane Bond ($750,000) and Kemar Roach ($720,000), whose names were subjected to some fierce bidding by the team owners. Bond and Pollard's team jersey was determined through the highly controversial silent bidding process which caps the player's earnings at $750,000 and hands over the unnamed additional amount (hence silent) over and above that into the coffers of the IPL.

Pollard's name followed Afridi's out of the hat and it was a welcome relief to see so many takers. The Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings expressed an early interest with the Kolkata Knight Riders and Bangalore Royal Challengers joining in later. Kings XI dropped out of the race as they had reportedly already signed atleast one player (Adrian Barath) pre-auction limiting their spending purse below the $750,000 the other teams had available. The other four sides submitted their written bids and were then invited on stage to see the winning bid but were instructed to not make the number public. Pollard headed the way of the Mumbai Indians, much to the delight of Mrs. Ambani.

Bond was the subject of an early bidding war between the two southern giants - Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers. The Kolkata Knight Riders waited patiently for the two teams to raise the stakes and then jumped in after the $600,000 mark was crossed. Chennai dropped out of the race for Bond, leaving the other two in the fray. Deccan and Kolkata took the bidding on to the second silent auction of the day with the Knight Riders crucially emerging victorious. Bond, who replaces Umar Gul in the Kolkata line-up will need to bring his A-game to turn the beleaguered franchises prospects around.

Roach was picked up by Deccan Chargers with the Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab also showing interest. It was very interesting to see the Super Kings lose out on players for a change, after their extravagant bidding in season's 1 and 2 saw them land MS Dhoni and Andrew Flintoff at sky high prices. The deals so far made excellent cricketing and business sense as you would have undoubtedly read in Anurag's predictions piece earlier this week - IPL Auction Preview Part 2 - The Teams: Who needs to buy Pollard?.

The other notable signing of the day was Wayne Parnell ($610,00) - South Africa's rising star and a nippy left arm fast bowler - who was snapped up by Virender Sehwag's Delhi Daredevils. Daredevils, who are a team heavily dependent on its batting arsenal - boasting of the likes of Sehwag, Gambhir, Dilshan, AB DeVilliers - now have a bowling weapon that can only improve their normally stand out displays. Mohammad Kaif (the forgotten man of Indian cricket and IPL's last season) seemed to get a break through as well as he was snapped up by Kings XI Punjab for an amount of $250,000. Kaif will be delighted to reunite with Yuvraj Singh after a very long time. Their careers sure have taken differing trajectories after India's famous win at Lord's in the final of the Natwest Series.

The bargain deal of the auction could well be Adam Voges whose services were acquired by Rajasthan Royals for a mere $50,000. Voges, is a proven performer at the ultra competitive Australian domestic level and has made a mark at the International level too with the limited chances he has had. His big hitting under pressure is the stuff that folklore in the Australian domestic circuit are made of. The Royals, who seem to enter the market only for bargain deals (and often strike gold) may thus have another stand out performer in Voges. Their selection of Damien Martyn ($100,000) could well turn out to be a gold mine as well with the former Australian middle order batsman top scoring for the Ahmedabad Rockets in the rebel ICL in the 2008 season.

On the southern side of the country, Chennai Super Kings may have unearthed a little gem of their own in Thisara Perera - the Sri Lankan hard hitting batsman - who has recently come to the fore with some consistent lusty hitting and the ability to win close matches with the naive ease of a bludgeoner. The Super Kings also added South Africa's ‘big six hitter' Justin Kemp to the line up as well. With MS Dhoni, Matthew Hayden, Albie Morkel and Jacob Oram already in the side, the Super Kings on paper look every bit a T20 champion side and 2010 may finally be their year.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore too seem to have made a smart choice in picking up Eoin Morgan from England at a reasonable fee of $220,000. Morgan has displayed at the highest level that he is capable of winning matches on his own and can smash his way out of trouble. He is definitely a shrewd acquisition for Bangalore who last season had to rely heavily on Ross Taylor to provide the fireworks.

Thus, it was a day which marked the onset of IPL 2010 and like the tournament itself, the auctioning process had its fair share of twists and turns. We now eagerly await the signing up of non-capped Indian players, who could well prove to be the difference makers considering that 7 out of 11 players out on the field need to be, Indian!

Aamir Khan Will Not Sign New Films for One More Year

Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan has decided not to sign any new film for one more year. Recently, the actor is busy promoting his forthcoming flick ?3-Idiots?. In next year he wants to concentrate on his already lined up home productions. His pending productions are; Abhinay Deo?s ?Delhi Belly?, Anushka Rizvi?s ?The Falling? and Kiran Rao?s directorial debut ?Dhobi Ghat?.

A close source to Aamir Khan said, ?Aamir had earlier decided to take one year off. But now he has decided to extend his sabbatical by one more year. Filmmakers who have approached him with projects have been told that Aamir intends to take approximately one more year to supervise the post-production and final look of his three films?.

After ?Ghajini?, Aamir decided to take one year break and revive himself. But now he is to extend his break. Reportedly the actor wants to spend some quality time with his wife and children. And more importantly he wants to supervise his home productions. These productions already have been delayed due to his commitments for ?3-Idiots?.

A source said, ?The only way Aamir feels his three productions can be completed and released in 2010 is if he sets aside all his own acting assignments to look into them. So, he isn?t signing any films in 2010 either?.

A source added, ?It requires guts to say no to the best roles going in Bollywood and to a reported fee of approximately Rs.30 crore per film. But Aamir suffers no security pangs about not signing films. He told a friend he will work at his own pace, no matter what the temptation or provocation to take on extra work?.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani ready to go home

Music giant Tips industries has sold the home rights of its blockbuster film of the year ?Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani? to GEC channel Colors, the VCD and DVD rights to Shemaroo Home Video and the Air Bourne rights to Fair Deal. The film, which is produced by Ramesh Taurani and directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, has been a money-spinner for Tips.

On selling the home rights Kumar Taurani says, ?Ajab has been one of the biggest hits of this year and we?re all really proud. So when we decided to sell the television premier and home video rights of the movie, we wanted to make the deal with the best in the business. It has always been our priority to associate our projects with the best.?

The next project of Tips? is ?Prince ? It?s Showtime?, and it stars Vivek Oberoi.

Aamir says sorry to SRK's kids

It seems that Shah Rukh Khan has buried the hatchet with Aamir Khan ever since the "Ghajini" star apologised to his children for making fun of him. Shah Rukh said he has no hard feelings for his colleague.

"We often visit each other's home and we have love and respect for each other. I don't think there was any need for him to apologise because it is not really a big thing for me. Both of us don't take these things seriously but it is the media that exaggerates the whole situation," Shah Rukh said via tele-conference here Thursday from Mumbai.

Aamir tendered an apology to Shah Rukh's kids for hurting their sentiments before taking a pot shot at the latter when he mentioned his wife Kiran in an answer to a reporter as "Kkk... Kiran" - a dialogue made famous by Shah Rukh in his 1993 hit "Darr".

"I've offered my heartfelt apologies to Shah Rukh's kids, not to Shah Rukh but to his kids," Aamir had recently said.

The two superstars have often taken digs at each other.

Anil Kapoor wanted Ajay Devgn?

Both the remarkable actors have individually given some impressive films with their distinguished style. Yet Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgn surprisingly have not given a film together all these years, although they have co-starred with other actors.

Anil Kapoor is currently busy with his two productions ? ?Aisha? and ?No Problem?. While ?Aisha? is for his two daughters, ?No Problem? is a multi-starrer. The film is co-produced by Spice Entertainment and directed by Anees Bazmee. It includes Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Sushmita Sen, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Kanagna Ranaut and Neetu Chandra.

Now with such assembled cast, it said that Anil Kapoor had plans to rope in Ajay Devgn in this one. However he was discouraged by several opinions that Ajay wouldn?t be interested to do another comedy after ?All The Best?.

Then recently Anil and Ajay by chance met in a studio, and said to have instantly bonded happily. Both the actors were equally wondering as to how come they never worked together? Anil was there for ?No Problem? shooting while Ajay had been there for ?Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?? It was then Anil realised that he should have gone ahead with his decision to cast Ajay in his film. ?I should never have listened to people. If I had asked Ajay, he would have been part of my project,? rued Anil.

However rumours say that the actor will try to pull in Ajay in the sequel of ?No Problem?.

Anarkali Bina Rai passes away

Mumbai: The eternal Anarkali of Bollywood, Bina Rai, passed away in Mumbai on Sunday following a cardiac arrest. She was in her 70s. Her elder son Prem Kishen was away in Melbourne when she breathed her last. Her grandson Sidharth Malhotra, who is currently shooting for his directorial venture for Dharma Productions, told TOI, ?My parents have rushed back to Mumbai. I have to finish the shoot as the unit is waiting. I will return to Mumbai. My grandmother was the best.??

Bina Rai was married to late actor Prem Nath. She is survived by sons Kailash and Prem Kishen and grandchildren Sidharth and Akansha.
Bina came from a family that did not approve of her acting in films. But she came across a newspaper ad for a talent contest and managed to win it. The prize money was Rs 25,000 and a role in a film by Kishore Sahu. She made her film debut in Kali Ghata opposite Kishore Sahu.

Bina met Prem Nath in the early 50s. The two fell in love on the sets of ?Samson and Delilah? and then got married and started their home production P N productions. The two acted together in many films such as Shagufa, Samunder and Watan but their pairing was rejected by the audiences.

Bina?s best pairing was with Pradeep Kumar. The two acted in films like Taj Mahal, Ghoonghat and Anarkali. She even won the Filmfare award for Ghoonghat. Madhubala was nominated in the same category for Mughal-e-Azam but lost to Bina Rai.
When Bina realised that actresses of her age would not get good roles, she stopped acting and preferred to stay home. Her last film was Dadima in 1966. She stopped making public appearances as well.

It was only at the music launch of her granddaughter Akansha?s debut film Yeh Mohabbat Hai that she was spotted.

Sohail Abbas scores 300th goal

LAHORE: Pakistan hockey team fullback and penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas became the first man in the history of the game on Sunday to score 300 goals.

Sohail scored his 300th goal in a match against Canada in the Argentinean city of Salta, in the inaugural encounter of the Champions Challenge Cup, according to a private TV channel.

Pakistan won the match 2-1. Eight teams are participating in the tournament, which have been divided into two groups.

December 08, 2009, (Sawf News) - Sequels are in vogue in Bollywood and Aamir may well climb on the bandwagon with Sarfarosh 2 hoping to recapture the magic of his 1999 action adventure Sarfarosh.

Aamir has never done a sequel before, but the timing for a film on national security couldn't be better!

Helmer John Mathan is busy giving finishing touches to the script, ahead of a meeting with Aamir, hoping it will impress him enough to get on board.

"Hopefully, the script should be ready soon. Only after I complete it and provided I like it, I will talk to Aamir," Mathan told TOI.

Rakesh Bapat, who is currently filming for Mathan's A new love Ishtory with co-stars Himesh Reshammiya and Niharika Singh (also directed by Mathan), is likely to play a key character in the Sarfarosh sequel.

The lead actress has not been decided yet. Sonali Bendre was the lead actress in the original.

"The villain in Sarfarosh, played by Naseeruddin Shah, was not an Indian. In the sequel, John wants to dwell upon the enemy within," a source revealed to TOI.

The 1999 blockbuster dealt with an Indian police officer's fight to stop cross-border terrorism. The film was released at the time of the Kargil conflict when tensions between India and Pakistan were high.

Israel furious over Swedish newspaper article

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel and the Swedish Embassy responded furiously Wednesday to a Swedish newspaper article that suggested Israeli troops killed Palestinians and harvested their organs. The article published Monday in Aftonbladet, Sweden's largest circulation daily, implies a link between those charges and the recent arrest in the U.S. of an American Jew for illicit organ trafficking. Later the reporter told Israel Radio he did not know if the allegations were true

Headlined "Our sons are plundered for their organs," the story made news in Israel, where some commentators compared it to medieval libels that Jews killed Christian children for their blood. Daniel Seaman, who heads Israel's government press office, said the article played on "vile anti-Semitic themes."
The article was illustrated with a photograph of a dead Palestinian man with a line of surgical stitches running the length of his torso, apparently taken after an autopsy, as well as pictures of stone-throwing youths and Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, a New York resident arrested in an FBI sting last month and charged with plotting to buy a kidney from an Israeli and sell it to an American patient for $160,000.
The writer, Donald Bostrom, based the story on accounts from Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza whom he identified only by their first names. It quotes an Israeli military spokesman denying the charges and saying that Palestinians killed by Israeli forces are routinely subjected to autopsies.
Interviewed on Israel Radio on Wednesday, Bostrom said he was worried by the allegations he reported but could not vouch for their accuracy.
"It concerns me, to the extent that I want it to be investigated, that's true. But whether it's true or not—I have no idea, I have no clue," he told the station.
Aftonbladet Editor Jan Helin said, "The article poses a question—why has this body been autopsied when the cause of death is obvious? There I think Israeli authorities owe us an answer."
Israeli legal expert Moshe Negbi said that according to Israeli law, "Autopsies are immediately performed after every unnatural death, and this is true for most other countries as well."
Helin also objected to what he called "the hate campaign that has been expressed in e-mails to me and the editorial office, but also through Israeli media."
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said, "This piece is so blatantly racist and can induce to hate crimes in such a way that we think authorities need to take care of the matter."
In a statement Wednesday, the Swedish embassy in Tel Aviv said the article was "as shocking and appalling to us Swedes as it is to Israeli citizens."
In Stockholm, the Swedish Foreign Ministry distanced itself from that statement. "We obviously don't think it is great to comment on what is written in the media," ministry spokesman Anders Jorle told The Associated Press.
In Sweden, the article drew a critical editorial from a rival daily, Sydsvenskan, which said it followed the "usual template of a conspiracy theory."
Israel's ambassador to Sweden, Benny Dagan, said the piece did not indicate a climate of general hostility toward Israel.
"It's certain elements," he told Israel Radio. "It's not all Sweden or mainstream Sweden or the Swedish parliament."

Our hero Balakrishna and his brother were captured by the baddies and they tied Balakrishna onto a chair...Those idiots didn't know that Balakrishna cannot be stopped by a simple chair...

Here is our hero's brother...The baddies tied him up too and fixed a time-bomb across his stomach...The bomb looks more like a pack of sausage rolls..hehee..

Balakrishna sees some bullet shells lying on the floor...This means that the baddies had a gun...But they decided to use a time-bomb to give the 'finishing touch'...This is what i call 'Innovative Thinking'...

The shells triggered Balakrishna's brain (if any) and suddenly he has an idea...He throws himself onto the floor and starts moving towards the bullet shells...

Now, lets have a look at the time-bomb...The timer(presumably a pager covered in plastic) is ticking...See the weird buttons on the bomb??...The red button is the On-Off button!!...Now, this is the world's first time-bomb with such a convenient on-off button...This is what i call a 'User-friendly Time-bomb'...Very easy to handle...Can be used even by infants...

The Coke Studio journey completed its run on the 14 of August, with a special 90-minute Independence Day Episode titled "Unity"

In episode five, Arieb Azhar brought Khwaja Ghulam Farid's powerful poetry to Coke Studio. This unique and gripping song, 'Husn-e-Haqiqi' featured on Arieb's first album, 'Wajj'. Translated as the 'beauty of truth', this spiritual anthem is compelling. As befitting the unorthodox chant-like musical structure of the song, the Coke Studio version is aptly simplistic - the visual treatment is also appropriately focussed, subtly enhancing the forceful impact of the lyrics and the skill and expressive, emotion of Arieb himself. 'Husn-e-Haqiqi' is simultaneously graceful, unrelenting and joyous.

The evergreen Strings brought back their signature elegance to Coke Studio for a second season with their song, 'Tiitliyan'. This melancholic number is from their latest album, 'Koi Aanay Wala Hai'. Violinist, Javed Iqbal brought a soothing dimension to the song, complementing the vocals of both Bilal Maqsood and Faisal Kapadia.

Zeb & Haniya returned with Javed Bashir to belt out their triumphant 'Rona Chor Diya' in style. This is yet another song from Zeb & Haniya's debut album 'Chup'. However, as with all the Coke Studio versions of Zeb & Haniya songs this one has also been transformed; Haniya is especially remarkable in Rona Chor Diya and shines brightly as both a powerful vocalist and a very impressive guitarist! In terms of vocal collaboration this song is breathtaking - Haniya takes centre stage with the lead, Zeb skillfully textures with harmonies and Javed Bashir 'adrenalizes' with his alaaps.

Noori's 'Kedaar' is a song that was composed exclusively for this platform by the brothers Ali Hamza and Ali Noor. 'Kedaar' means powerful and invincible and this song speaks of an awakening and a renewed awareness. "Coke Studio is one of the birth pangs for an awakening Pakistani conscience." Says Ali Hamza, which is particularly befitting given the context of the song Kedaar.

Shafqat Amanat Ali gave a new twist to the single 'Kuch Ajab Khail' off his debut solo album, 'Tabeer'. The song in itself is a vintage Patiala Gharana asthai, sung originally by Shafqat's father Ustad Amanat Ali Khan and uncle Ustad Fateh Ali Khan.

Ali Zafar ended his folk inspired Coke Studio season with 'Nahi Ray Nahi'. Moving to the keyboard for a different perspective, Ali Zafar maintains vocal integrity with easy style, while flautist Baqir Abbas brings his distinctive finesse to this poignant number.

Debuting on Coke Studio's "Unity" episode on Independence Day, 'Humain Kya Hua' by Atif Aslam has a distinct patriotic flavour. Written and composed by Atif Aslam, this song challenges our consciences, questions apathy and aims to incite unity. 'Humain kya Hua' is a rousing wake-up call, both musical and lyrical.

Coke Studio's five episode voyage played over 14 television channels and 5 radio stations all summer and the team that brought you both seasons look forward to announcing a third run of performances straight from the heart of Coke's live studio next year.

In the past, senior actress and former MP Shabana Azmi alleged religious discrimination when she attempted to buy a flat in Mumbai. Actor Arbaaz Khan, brother of Salman Khan, had also experienced similar difficulties when he attempted to buy a flat here.

Actor Emraan Hashmi today accused a housing society in posh Bandra of "religious discrimination" saying that it denied him the NOC to purchase a flat in the building because he is a Muslim.

"This is clearly a case of religious discrimination. Some people told me that this society is biased towards Muslims. They did not tell me directly but it is obvious," the actor alleged. Hashmi said he wanted to buy a house in the posh Pali Hill but the housing society refused to give him the No Objection Certificate because of his religion. "The Nibbana cooperative housing society at Pali Hill did not provide NOC to purchase the flat," Hashmi, who was flanked by mentor Mahesh Bhatt, told reporters here. The actor said he has approached the State Minorities Commission, seeking its intervention on the issue. Hashmi has filed a complaint alleging that the society had refused to give him a no-objection certificate even after he had paid the token amount of one lakh. He also accused the society of not entertaining his parents despite the fact that they had sought appointment to meet the office-bearers. "My parents went to meet the society members last week along with the seller and the broker. The members refused to meet them saying they were busy. I really found it offensive," he said. When told about society's claim that he was denied NOC because of his "serial kisser" image, the actor said, "They are trying to duck the issue. Many big stars like Prem Chopra and Anil Dhawan, who have done negative roles in their movies are their members but the society has no problem with their onscreen image." Hashmi said he has been asked to get a character certificated by the State Minorities Commission. "I talked to Abraham Mathai, who is a member of the commission. He has asked me to get a character certificate from the police. I am going to apply for it then we will wait and see what happens next," the actor said. Meanwhile, Mathai confirmed that he had received a formal complaint from the actor, saying the commission is looking into the matter. "We have received a complaint from Emraan Hashmi. He is stating the discrimination by a housing society. We have issued notice to the chairman and the secretary of the housing society to give tan explanation. We will wait for that," Mathai said. "If we find that they used discrimination then we will take action against them," Mathai added. Earlier, veteran actress Shabana Azmi had claimed that she faced problems getting a house in Juhu because of her religion.
