Internet Business Mastery readers – you guys are serious about business.  I know you are.  I talk to Jay and see how much time & money is invested in this community.  I’ve even met a few of you and I know that you’re talented, successful business owners.

But some of you still aren’t using Adwords.

Which kinda blows my mind.  A little.

What is Adwords?

It’s Google’s advertising system. You know those ads that show up on the top highlighted box and the right column when you do a Google search? Those ads are put there by businesses paying on a per-click basis for the ads. Prices vary depending on your industry and the keywords you’re trying to bid on.

How do I use Adwords?

Google has a 90 second video that will show you how to set up your account.

Before you set up your account and go nuts…

You are tracking your web traffic, right?

Please tell me yes.  It’s so easy to track the number of people who are coming to your website, as well as the amount of time they spend there and what they click on.  If you’re not doing that yet, then visit Google.com/analytics and set up your tracking software for free (yes, there are other options – if you don’t like Google try Stattracker or Woopra).

After you have tracking setup, you’ll need to do a little bit of research before you give Adwords your credit card.

Research, research, research

One of the biggest mistakes that Adwords newbies make is picking basic keywords that don’t really reflect their business.  Real estate agents pick ‘Real Estate,’ and Plumbers pick ‘Plumbing.’ Please don’t do this.  Can you imagine how many people are trying to compete on those words?

The easiest place to do research is the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordTool This is a free tool that you can use to do some research and see how much search traffic there is for certain keywords, and get suggestions for different variations of what people are typing in to Google to find what you do.

Other common problems for Adwords newbies:

I’m not getting enough clicks. You may not have your maximum budget set high enough.  If you’re only bidding $1 per click and your competition is bidding $2 – $3, then you’re not going to appear as high on the page. You also may not be bidding on the right keywords.  Go back to the research and make sure you’re targeting the right keywords.  Lastly, you may want to adjust your ad text to get the right catchy phrase to draw people in.

Uh, I got 5,712 clicks, but no sales. I can’t tell you how many client accounts I’ve looked at like this.  If you’re getting a lot of clicks but no sales, then you could be bidding on the wrong keywords.  Expensive mistake. Again, go back to the research and make sure you’re targeting the right searches. The other option is that your website sucks at closing sales.  I can drive a million people to your store, but if your salesperson can’t close the deal, you need a new salesperson (or you need to do more training).  Your website is your online salesperson.

Holy Cow! I spent a bajillion dollars! How did that happen? My favorite mistake, because it’s extremely common.  Turn off the Content Network.  That’s the setting that makes your ads appear in Gmail and other places that aren’t search engines. Stay away from the Content Network if you’re a newbie.  You’ll spend a lot of money and never see anything in return.

Even though Adwords is easy to set up, there is a lot to learn for new advertisers.  You can learn more yourself by visiting the Adwords Learning Center or you can hire an Adwords professional to help you (you could also tell Sterling & Jay to have me back to do another guest post).

Success Factor One: Begin with the end in mind.

As Stephen Covey has written, you need to really understand what it is that you’re trying to do. Otherwise, it’s going to be very hard for you to obtain and maintain the focus that you need to be successful. You need to find a program or plan and stick to that program until you’re successful. In that process you need to have a clear vision of what success means and what it is that you’re trying to do. Know what you are building.

Success Factor Two: Avoid bright shiny objects.

One of the big problems that I had when I first started in internet marketing was the fact that I didn’t know exactly what I was doing or why I was doing it. (See number one above.) So, every time a new offer would come into my inbox I’d go check it out. For months and months I was bouncing around between this offer and that offer; this guru and that guru. That unfocused approach is a recipe for disaster for the part-time entrepreneur. It is absolutely critical as a part time internet business person with limited time resources available that you maintain focus and turn off those messages in your inbox.

Success Factor Three: Understand the lifestyle that you’re trying to design.

On the Internet Business Mastery Podcast and in the Internet Business Mastery Academy, Jay and Sterling spend a lot of time talking about lifestyle design. Lifestyle design is even more critical for a part time internet business person because it means that you must build a business that’s sustainable part time. If you end up building a business that requires a lot of manual labor activity, customer service or consulting, you’ll quickly outstrip your ability to handle that business.

Of course, you’ll want to modify this thinking in the event that you plan to leave your day job, but until you’re able to do that you need to make that the lifestyle you’re designing for your business is compatible with a part-time business plan.

Building the right team for your business will speed up your success and boost your income. It’s one of the best business investments you can make. In this series of posts we talk about the kind of team members that you need to find to keep your business growing.

One of the great things about Internet business you can start a business on your own even with a limited budget. But eventually you’ll find out that running the business by yourself will hold you back. There’s just too much to do.

No Entrepreneur is an Island

One of the most important things I learned as musician is that no artist is an island. I created my best work when I worked with other musicians to write the songs.

The same lesson is true for entrepreneurs. You can’t do it by yourself forever. There are too many hats to wear. If you try to wear them all at the same time, you’ll go crazy.

As time goes on, you need to spend your time doing the things that you are best at and letting others do the rest. This requires building a team.
This doesn’t mean hiring employees. The team we’ve assembled for Internet Business Mastery is made up of freelancers from all around the world. Most of them we have never met in person.

Here’s a list of the members of our team, what they do for us and how we found each.

Virtual Assistant

Our full-time virtual assistant does a number of general tasks for us including:

• Research
• Customer service
• Link-building
• Editing videos
• Posting content to the blog, You Tube, etc.
• Posting articles to article directories
• Basic editing of WordPress and web pages
• Data Entry
• Anything else we can think of and train her in

She lives in the Philippines. We pay her $380 a month — a good salary for her position in the Philippines. She works for us 40 hours a week.

We found her using the resume searches provided with John Jonas’ Replace Myself site (affiliate link). A number of Internet Business Mastery listeners have used that same site to find their own virtual assistants.

Audio Editing

Since we produce a lot of audio content, it’s nice to be able to record the content, upload it and have it taken care of by someone else after that. We found our audio editor through a referral from another podcaster. We pay about $25 per hour.

Bookkeeper

This is a great task to outsource as early as possible. It’s a pain to do, often gets ignored and when you finally get around to doing it, you probably do it wrong anyway. Our bookkeeper was referred to us through a business colleague, Alice Seba.

Our bookkeeper is worth every penny. It’s such a relief just to know that every month things are up to date and we will have an accurate report of our finances. We spend about $100 a month on this service.

Tom’s e-mail about the group offers a number of great tips that you can model for your own mastermind group. Here is what he had to say.

There are currently 9 members in our mastermind group. If members miss 4 meetings we remove them from the group. We removed three people last year. We only want serious people that participate.

All the members are from Internet Business Mastery Academy. We are pretty much all at the same stage in development of our products and websites. Three members are beginning to making money now.

We hold monthly meetings in a conference room with Internet and a projector at a public library. We stay in touch and support each other using Google Groups. Our Google group has a Rolodex for websites, books, marketing swipe file, an area for storing ebooks/articles, members contact section and my favorite a monthly worksheet.

The monthly worksheet must be filled out before coming to each meeting. Are meetings are two hours long. We critique two member’s websites the first hour. The second hour we go over everything on the worksheet for each member. I also attached a blank worksheet from January’s meeting for you.

Thank you Sterling  and Jay for turning me on to mastermind groups. Without this group I would be stuck in the planning stage for a long time.

It happens. In fact, I find it happens regularly along the entrepreneur’s journey.

It’s one of those moments when you realize that you’re not going to rise to the next level without a leap of faith.

It happened when I realized that the 9-to-5 was taking up so much time and energy that my business aspirations were severely limited.
The leap of faith was quitting my job.

It happened when I realized that my podcast consulting gigs were keeping me from building a business that was not based on trading dollars for hours.

The leap of faith was letting my clients go.

It happened when we launched the Academy and I realized that 20 hours a week was not enough to make it a successful resource and dependable stream of income.

The leap of faith was putting my other businesses on hold to concentrate on the Academy full-time.

And now it’s happening again. Internet Business Mastery has reach yest another point where we won’t grow anymore if we stay with the current mode of operations.

Last week we had an annual strategy meeting in Salt Lake City. We set goals and planned what needed to happen to reach them.

We saw great growth in 2009. In 2010 we want to double it. It’s clear that will require more resources, specifically a larger team.

We’ve done a lot in four years with just two guys, a virtual assistant and a handful of freelancers. But the time has come to invest in more talent.

So we looked over the books, chose to make some personal sacrifices and set money aside to hire more people — an article writer, a programmer,  an InfusionSoft consultant, a marketing manager and a sales manager.

Our team is rapidly expanding and we’re fortunate to work with some very talented people.

It’s a bit scary to give things up and make new investments, but based on the past we know that…

Every time you take that leap of faith, the ceiling shatters and you rise to the next level.

It’s time to reach further and take our message wider with other channels like blogging.

Though we have blogged some in the past, it’s never been focused and consistent. We know there are a lot of people that we’re not reaching because we haven’t had a well-defined blogging strategy.

So we’re developing a focused strategy now. As with any strategy, it’s a good idea to ask why are you doing it. What is it that we want to gain as a result?

Without going into much detail, here’s what I came up with today.

1. Organic Search Traffic

Posting frequent, valuable content has proven to land higher rankings in the search engine results, hence bringing in more targeted, free traffic from the search engines.

2. Attract More Links to Your Site

The more you post valuable content, the more opportunities there are for sites to link to you. This in turns brings in more click traffic. In addition, it affects the higher rankings mentioned in #1.

3.  Engaging Followers and Building Relationships

Once someone has opted to follow your content (whether through Twitter, Facebook, E-mail, RSS, etc.), the goal is to engage with them regularly to build a relationship of trust.

While we have experienced a powerful level of relationship building by delivering content through the audio podcast, some people prefer to connect through blog updates.

4. Progress the Sales Process

One thing that we have done with our blog is use it as a tool in our sales process. Blog posts can be used to build anticipation for a launch or deliver content that prepares a follower to buy.

The Purpose of Our Blogging Strategy

Every entry on our blog should fulfill one or more of those four purposes. If it doesn’t, then it’s really a waste of time. In fact, the same four purposes apply to our audio podcast or live video show.

Before designing the other pieces of our strategy (e.g. frequency, types of content, length of posts, etc.) it was important to have a well-defined purpose.

As I think back on the experience, there are several great lessons that I’ve learned. The biggest lesson relates to having a Definite Major Purpose, not only in life but even in our daily activities.

I had no idea how much work it would be to create a 10-minute short film. Sterling warned me, but I still didn’t fathom the extent of work the project was going to take. Still, looking back it was totally worth it. I would do it again.

Before I committed to creating this film, I listed as many reasons as I could for why I wanted to do it.

I knew all the ways that it would fulfill me. I knew the meaning it would have for me and others involved in the project.

By carefully choosing a purpose (or even several) for creating the film, I stayed  motivated even when I spent 30 straight hours editing, without sleep.

Here are a few of the pre-defined purposes that motivated me through the project.

1. I wanted to learn a number of new skills including how to be a better storyteller and media creator and how to use Final Cut
2. Next time I have an idea for a film, I wanted to be more likely to just do it rather than getting overwhelmed by an unfamiliar process.
3. I wanted to make new friends by working with other filmmakers and with the dancers that my film is about.
4. I wanted to collaborate with very passionate and creative people.
5. I needed to exercise the creative part of my personality — something that has always fulfilled me in life.
6. I knew the finished product would have meaning and purpose beyond just being watched a couple times by local audiences. The subject of  my film is a non-profit dance company that can use the film to promote their mission for years to come.
7. I hoped the film will inspire others to pursue their passion.

The idea of having a Definite Major Purpose and knowing your Fulfillment Factors is something that we teach in our courses.

It can (and should) be applied to choosing what you’ll do this weekend just as much as the big picture plans of your life. Without thinking about the reasons why I wanted to undertake the film, I would have likely given up half way through when the going got tough.

The better you know what motivates you and what you want in life, the better you get at quickly making decision that lead to more happiness each step of the way.

Hey Jay! I am just starting off as a member of Internet Business Mastery Academy, and I was on the Jeff Walker webinar last night. It was awesome! I signed up for the early notification about Product Launch Formula 2.0, and I received a lot of content from his sideways sales letter : )

He mentioned a lot about the new FTC regulations and how that is preventing him from keeping up a lot of his case studies, which are more or less people who have successfully used his system and in what niche.

Will this prevent IBMA and the podcast from having the amazing cubical escape stories? I really enjoy them, and I know a lot of us listeners would hate to see it be a casualty of these new regulations. I was curious about it, and I thought I’d ask.

Answer

David, thanks for sending this question in. We’ll continue doing the Cubicle Escape / Success Story interviews. We just have to be careful about having them talk about “results” that may or may not be typical.

For example, if they said that after following the Academy they were making $8000 a month, we would have to probably edit that statement out.

The guidelines say that you can’t share results without specifying what the “typical” results are for your product. The problem is that they are very vague about how “typical results” should be measured and portrayed.

The typical results for people that actually put our program into action is that it works. The level of income that it generates and at what rate depends on a vast number of variables.

We also know that there are people that sign up for the Academy and sadly never really put it into action. So does the FTC expect us to factor that in when sharing stories from customers?

The guidelines are very vague about how “typical results” should be measured and portrayed. Each marketer has to decide what they are comfortable with sharing.

Here’s the great news, though. For those that implement a system of relationship building through content marketing, you’ll do fine without results-based testimonials. The influence builds when you attract a loyal community — like we teach it in the Academy — is incredibly powerful. People will be happy to buy from you because they know, like and trust what you do.

I came up with the time budget when I was tired of feeling like I wasn’t getting the most important things each week.

It’s tricky to balance the recurring tasks of your business week to week – things like content creation – with marketing and other massive actions that will grow your business.

So just like you might create a budget to carefully plan how you spend your money, you should also create a budget for your time.

The Payoff of Time Budgeting

This technique is one reason we’ve been able to reduce the amount of time that we each spend on Internet Business Mastery to twenty hours a week. We have to very deliberate about how that time is used.

Tasks will always expand to take up as much time as they can. Time budgeting helps keep that in check. For example, I can look at my calendar and know that I only have one hour budgeted to put this article together.

When I create a time budget and stick to it, I feel less desperate about my time. At the end of the day I have the peace of mind that I spent my time doing what was most important.

Time Budgeting Tools

There are two tools that I use for time budgeting.

1. Excel: About once each quarter I update an Excel spreadsheet that lays out week to week what my schedule should look like.
2. Google Calendar: The budget in Excel gets transferred to Google Calendar where I can see what I should be working on, when and for how long at any given time.

Planning Your Own Time Budget

If you feel overwhelmed by everything you have to do, if you wander from task to task based on whatever “squeaky wheel” is making the most noise in your psyche at any given moment, the time budget will help alleviate that.

Give it a try this week.

1. Create a chart that represents each week of the month. Decide how much time you can spend each week on your business.
2. Make a list of the recurring (daily, weekly, monthly) tasks that MUST be done in order to maintain your business and keep new leads coming in.
3. Decided as realistically as you can how much time each of these should take.
4. Now you have to start prioritizing. Based on the total hours you want to work each week, decide what is most important to do. Reduce the amount of time allotted to each task as needed. You’ll probably need to plan four budgets, one for every week in a month.
5. NOTE: Every third month you will have a fifth week. This is a great time to schedule catch up time, cleanup tasks and other things that only need to happen once a quarter.
6. Make sure you have time left over for strategy and putting one or two “massive action” big ideas into action each month. I try to have 5 or so hours a week to spend on these things.
7. At the beginning of the week, plug your time budget into a calendar

Invest Your Time Now for a Quick Payoff Later

Maybe you’re thinking, “But I don’t have time to spend two hours creating a time budget!” Think of it as an investment. You’ll “earn” those two hours back within a week’s time.

There’s far too much pessimism in the world right now.

We recognize that a lot of people are struggling in a variety of ways, but guess what?

There’s also a lot of things in this world that are friggin’ awesome
right now!

We have a lot to be grateful for. It’s important not to forget that.

Times can get tough. Now and again we might lose some of the comforts that we’ve grown accustomed to, but we must not lose site of all that is good around us.

The news feeds us fear, because that’s what sells. They know it will keep us glued to the TV.

Here’s a tip…turn the news off!

Stop watching it. Find other ways to keep up on current events if you must.

Choose carefully who you spend your time with. Associate with people that will build you up.

Guard your mind from sources that would tear you down.

They don’t have your best interests in mind.
