My cat is one of the most important things in my life, and here's my story.

I got him back in 2021. I had just moved, I had new roommates, new apartment, and I was starting a new life. I had briefly discussed with my roommates about getting a cat together, and they agreed. There was no cemented plan that we talked about, and both of their birthdays were coming up. I took a chance and decided to surprise them with a cat. I found him posted on a Facebook page for fostered animals needing a furrever home. I barely read any description, I didn't think twice, I just messaged a girl and told her I want him and am going to pick him up. The next day, I had a 5 month old kitten in my bedroom figuring out what life is going to be together.

My roommates came home and I told them I had a birthday surprise for them. I opened the door to reveal a kitten! A stripped, long, green-eyed kitten named Ty. And the rest is history.

The last 5 years together he's played such a crucial role in my life. He's always my safe space, he's always loving and makes me be more responsible. He never hesitates to tell me how he feels, or plop in my lap, or watch a movie with me and make me feel better about everything. So here's to introducing Ty, a truly unique little guy. It seems like everybody had a campus cat in college, but not all of these studious cats receive the esteemed honor they deserve.

I studied at an arts and design academy. You can already imagine the eccentric types of people who enroll there as students without me writing a word about it. And, as naturally as it goes, many of my fellow students were cat people. And, also as naturally, it seems, we had some permanent cats living on campus grounds.

First and foremost, there was The Sultan. Yes, he had to have the "The" in the name, because he was that impressive. He was a huge tomcat with a thick orange coat, who would walk heavily all around the territory, and plop himself right at the center of the main yard for everyone to notice him. Then there was his Queen, a young grey female with a very long tail. She was skittish, but loved it when the students offered some food. But then we discovered The Sultan had another queen, so we creatively named her Mistress. She was a friendly calico who was loved by everyone on campus. She meowed loudly for pets.

And despite them being the most permanent residents on campus (because, you know, all students and professors go home eventually, even after days that seem like they stretch forever), they were never acknowledged by any official staff. But that's not the case for Max, the resident campus cat of Vermont State University. After being the friendliest cat for years, to both students and faculty members, he was honored with a fitting doctor title - just as if he were an esteemed university teacher, a professor of high regard.

Just like snowflakes, every cat is unique. Most differences are small and only noticeable to their owners, but you could pick out all these cute kitties below from a mile away.

I've seen more cats than most people will in a lifetime. I was raised with cats as pets, adopted cats as an adult, and every day I go to work and look for funny and cute cats on the internet. I've been doing that for years, so you can imagine how many felines I've seen up until now as a 36-year-old cat dad (please don't call me old).

But you know what? Cats still surprise me to this day. It feels like I could write and research cats my entire life and I would always find something new - and that's partly because the world is getting bigger (metaphorically) and cat genetics are wild. As a result, you constantly get cats with unique and rare fur patterns and markings. It's simply beautiful to see.

I'm not just talking about the different tiny details between my SID (standard issue cat) and yours, I'm talking about cats with "mustaches," cats born with little bowties or with a single, straight line all the way from their heads to their tails. All these fluffy, fabulous felines below are unique in their own special way, and it's pretty obvious how. But what matters most is that, no matter how different they are, they're all still beautiful, and all deserve to live their best lives ordering us hoomans around until their very last breath.

And since we're pretty sure time exists (we're not about to determine this astro-philosophical claim; we're not super smart scientists), it means it's a good time to have cat time. There's something so purrfect about the combination of cats and dopamine. On the surface, it seems like they wouldn't be related, but they are. These small bursts of joy give us more than a dopamine hit, it gives us a reason to love. We love our cats like we love a partner, a friend, or even ourselves. Never underestimate the adoration, devotion, love, and connection you can have with your cat, and don't let anyone tell you it's silly. It's a deeply emotional experience that should be respected and cherished. It's impossible to see a tiny set of cat toe beans and not immediately want to squish them.

Cat paws are already ridiculously cute, but the little beans underneath really seal the deal. Pink ones, black ones, spotted ones, a completely random assortment on the same paw, we'll take them all. Some cats even have little tufts of fur growing between their toes, just in case their feet weren't adorable enough already.

Unfortunately, the kitty attached to those beans may not be nearly as excited about them as you are. Plenty of cats will happily show off their paws right up until you try to touch one. Suddenly, that foot is gone. Tucked under the belly, pulled against their chest, or used to smack away the hand that dared approach the precious beans.

The Cat Distribution System didn't send one cat this time. It dropped off an entire family of five.

Reddit user Momoreau has been a cat pawrent for 25 years, but they definitely weren't expecting their partner to discover a feral mama raising four tiny kittens in an overgrown corner of their condo's backyard. The babies, three boys and one girl, are estimated to be around 4 weeks old, which means they still need plenty of time with mama.

Momoreau contacted local rescues right away, but most are already overwhelmed. So for now, the little family has a backyard caretaker making sure mama gets food twice a day and always has fresh water. She's still cautious around people, but she seems to be getting more comfortable. On the first day, mama carried one of her kittens away, possibly thinking it was time to find a new spot. After a couple of days of meals and having her space respected, she brought the baby back. We'll take that as a pretty big vote of confidence.

There's already a plan for all five cats too. Once the kittens are old enough, Momoreau has a foster situation lined up and even a few trusted people who may be interested in adopting them. They'll also work on socializing the babies while they're still young. Mama will eventually be trapped with help from experienced rescue friends, vaccinated, spayed, and returned to her community.

Right now, the main mission is keeping everyone comfortable through Tennessee's 90°F-plus summer weather. The family is currently shaded beneath brush along a privacy fence, but Momoreau wants to offer mama a protected shelter for storms and rain without disturbing her nest.

If you're a cat owner, you know that cats would be apex predators if evolution had taken them on a slightly different path. Turns out they enjoy relaxing in a nice sunbeam more than hunting, but if they had to, they could and would hunt. Despite being lazy and adorable, cats are actually incredible hunters, with some of the fastest reflexes in the whole animal kingdom. In case you're curious how fast, a cat can react anywhere from 0 to 70 milliseconds after something happens (that's 0- 0.07 s). For reference, it takes you 0.1 seconds to blink.

However, just because cats are excellently equipped hunters doesn't mean that they're safe from being hunted themselves. Cats have many natural predators in the wild. Large canines (wolves, coyotes), bigger cat species (cougars, bobcats, mountain lions, etc.), and birds of prey all think that your feline would make a purrfect meal for them. This is why we say it's not safe for your cats to roam around outside unsupervised, among many other reasons.

You may think to yourself, "Well, that would certainly never happen to my cat/kitten," but think again! It happened to the stray kitten below, and if not for their neighbor's daughter intervening, that kitten would be a hawk's breakfast instead of looking for their furrever home.

It all occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, where Lucy, the neighbor's daughter, thought she was witnessing a hawk swoop in on a squirrel for their morning meal, but realized it was actually a smol grey kitten. She was able to save the kitten and take him to the vet, then to Woof Ave Rescue so he could get adopted.

We are not the ones who adopt our cats. It's our cats who adopt us.

This is ancient knowledge at this point. A fact so inarguable that no one even tries to argue it anymore. Cats adopt their humans, not the other way around. If you are a cat owner, then you know this. Cats find us everywhere and everywhere. We can be on a walk when we get adopted, just going through our day-to-day lives when a cat waltzes into it and changes everything. We could get adopted while getting coffee, right there, in that Starbucks line. We could have a cat walk straight into our home, just like that, and refuse to leave. Even if you are someone who walked into a shelter and got your cat there, you know that as you were walking around and "choosing", you felt a special sort of connection with one cat - only one - and that is the cat that you went home with.

Doing good deeds is something that has largely been forogten about in our modern society. Without the social structures to uphold it, most people let life slip them by without lifting a finger for the less fortunate. But you know what they say, good things come to good people, a fact that this new cat mom discovered when she went to drop off some clothes to be donated.

Upon reaching the donation bin she was confronted with a sight that no hooman should have to see. Two tiny kittens, barely moving and almost lifeless. It is rather ironic that with so many people leaving their families claiming to be going to the store, that this feline family reunion story would begin in much the same way. But in this case there is at least a bittersweet ending to help make it all go down a little smoother. Ah, who are we kidding, the whole thing is wholesome as heck and one heck of a tail.

It was our rescuer's plea for feline related help that brought this story to our attention. In their post they told of their trip to the local 7/11 and the feline who followed them all the way to their car and leapt right in, as though to say 'Please take me home with you, I cannot live like this anymore.'. And with a plea like that what can you do other than simply say yes and take the kitty home. It is a rather delightful feeling being chosen by a cat child like that.

But with much regret, that which began as happiness and heartwarming sensations soon turned into a bittersweet goodbye when it came to light that this poor cat child had been missing for more than a year and had a fur family who had not given up hope of finding him once more. So while this rescuer did not get to keep the kitten she had so luckily found, she was instrumental in making sure that one less cat is needlessly left out on the streets.

Some animal rescues have obvious solutions. If a cat is stuck behind a fence, you open a gate. If a kitten has climbed too high, you find a ladder. But when a cat is stranded in a tree surrounded by water, there are no ordinary options.

A tabby kitten is perched on a patch of branches rising above the water near a bridge. Everything around him is moving except the branch he has managed to hold onto, and he can't move without falling, so he sits there, helpless. People watching knew the water was too dangerous to cross, but they had to do something. The animal couldn't be left alone with nowhere safe to go. So the crowd figured out a way to reach him without putting anyone else at risk.

Use a drone.

Yes, that device people fly for photos was prepared for the rescue, carrying a line above the water while others helped pilot it from land. The drone serving as a tool for the rescue may be the surprising part, but it only worked because people cooperated. Everyone watched where the kitten was, and a piece of technology became useful to save a small life stranded in the water because they all decided the matter was worth their time and effort.

Eventually, the kitten is brought safely away from the floodwater and back to the dry land. A later moment shows him indoors, creating a contrast between the quiet image of the safe animal and the danger he overcame outside. The cat, who had been clinging to whatever remained above the water, now has somewhere warm to rest.

People involved in the kitten rescue are proof that there is hope in humanity. They saw an animal in trouble and found a solution together, even if none of them could promise the plan would work when they started it. They kept trying and made a drone with a line work.

They don't only have a known name - the Cat Distribution System - they also employ other pets as secret agents, helping the right people find a cat in need and bring them home. And it's done mostly with dogs. Some unsuspecting dog people are matched with a cat, and it's all thanks to their dog who led them there. With the help of the Cat Distribution System, of course. They're the puppet masters, pulling the strings of destiny to make the most purrfect match between the cat and the human. Sometimes, though, a canine companion's help is necessary.

Take this one doggo, for example, who led a woman right to the cat she was matched with. But how do we know her dog found the cat she just so needed to find, and not a random stray? Well, that's part of the meowgic happening with the Cat Distribution System. This cat was matched with this woman for sure, because, as she describes it, the kitten is the spitting image of her soul cat who crossed the rainbow bridge two years ago. If that's not a purrfect match for adoption, we don't know what is.

This little kitty got lucky.

Things could have gone badly for this little kitten. She was found in a box by students with a note that read, "I love my mom, I almost got run over. Wherever you take me, raise me with love" and the rest is history. An American who lives in Korea saw the photo of the kitten and note from a Facebook group for fostering cats, but the person who posted lives 3 hours away from her. Someone responded and said she'd drive the 3 hours just to take the kitten to the cat nursery. The kitten had to stay at a family's home for a couple nights though, and the family who got to foster her wrote another very heartwarming note about how attached they got to her, and what a good girl she is. Everyone deals with loss differently. The only thing that we all have in common is the pain that comes with it. There isn't anything that we can do to make it go away, not completely. It goes away slowly, over time. And although there isn't anything we can do to cancel it out, there are some things that we can do to lessen the pain, to distract ourselves from it. That's where cats come in. Distracting yourself with silly cat memes and wholesome pictures of cats on the internet does not have a single downside. It can only help. But we're talking about more than that. If you're someone who loves cats and is going through such heartache, then adopting a cat could be the best thing you ever do for yourself.

Adopting a cat at any point in your life is a good thing, all cat owners would argue, but I can personally say that I adopted a cat during the worst time in my life, and it was the best thing that I could have done for myself. Suddenly, there was an itty bitty ball of joy in my house, small, chaotic, purring. Someone completely dependent on me, and the only thing that someone really wanted from me was love. It's hard not to smile at a cat. It's that simple. They really do change things. Cats bring so much peace into your life. And your loved ones know that too. They know the meowgic of cats.

That is exactly what led the person in this story to think that their late father sent them a cat. He passed suddenly, unexpectedly, and it hurt. And then a kitten appeared in his daughter's life and started making things a little less bad for her. All of a sudden, she was smiling again. Fall is almost here, and the cats are more than ready to dive headfirst into the season. Literally.

Cats will play with pretty much anything that moves, so a bunch of leaves blowing around the yard is obviously going to get their attention. They can chase them, pounce on them, dig through them, and hide in a pile waiting for the perfect moment to jump out. It's basically a whole yard full of free cat toys, and they don't even have to wait for their hooman to open the Chewy box.

We especially love the cats who completely disappear into a big pile of leaves. You'll see a little face poking out, maybe a pair of ears, and occasionally one suspicious tail giving away exactly where they're hiding. They look very pleased with themselves too, even though absolutely nobody is fooled.

Fall also happens to be a pretty great time for kitty pictures. Orange cats were practically made for this. Put one in a pile of orange and yellow leaves and suddenly you have to play a game of find the feline. Black cats look extra cute out there too, especially with spooky season getting closer. A year ago, Breadstick was a 5-pound stray. Now he's 13 pounds of fluff, food obsession, and unconditional love.

Breadstick has come a long way from the tiny 5-pound stray who was adopted in April 2025, and we're not just talking about the extra eight pounds he's picked up along the way.

When Breadstick first came home, he wasn't exactly the type to spend every waking moment glued to his new pawrent. He was friendly, but cuddling wasn't really his thing. That started to change about three months in, when Breadstick began sleeping in bed with his hooman. Once he discovered the benefits of nighttime snuggles, there was no turning back.

These days, Breadstick has gone full velcro cat. If he's awake and realizes his favorite person isn't in the room, he'll actually go looking for them. Excuse us while we cry over the former stray making sure his hooman hasn't wandered off somewhere without him.

He still isn't much of a lap cat, but that doesn't mean he's giving up his cuddle time. Breadstick prefers snuggling right beside his person, which we'd argue is just as cute. He's also a major foodie and, despite presumably having plenty of actual cat toys available, his favorite is literally a piece of string. Cats really will ignore anything you spend money on for the random object they found lying around the house.

Breadstick now weighs a healthy 13 pounds, so that little 5-pound stray has done some serious growing. But his relationship with his pawrent might be the sweetest transformation of all.

His hooman calls Breadstick their soulmate and says he's healed a part of them without them even knowing how. They hope they'll somehow find each other in every lifetime.

Shouldn't the one place that's about taking care of your pets actually be about pet health and not solely focused on money?

It's a fact that nearly everything is more expensive now than it was 20 years ago. That's just the way the cookie crumbles, and we have to deal with it. This change in our society has led to many more changes, like people having kids later, renting property instead of buying, and as a result, adopting more pets instead of children. For example, my parents had their first baby at 27, which was when I got my second cat. I'm still working on the kid part, but that's a story for a different article.

So, if more people are adopting cats and dogs, that must mean that it's cheaper to do so, right?

Wrong.

Vet costs have also gone up in the last 5 years, and one of the big reasons is because a lot of veterinary practices and medical centers started getting bought by private equity-backed corporations. One statistic states that these corporate consolidators now control roughly a quarter of primary-care practices and three-quarters of specialty and emergency practices in the US. Do you think that these mega corporations care about the health of your pets? No. They care about money and thus, have changed a lot of vet practices from health-focused to profit-focused.

Sometimes our cats are the most elegant creatures on earth… Some other times, they are just a ball of floof that seems to be surviving on caffeine alone.

They spent that first night playing together and assumed she'd probably be gone by morning. Olive disagreed. She stuck around and started sleeping in the shed, which is a pretty bold move for a cat who technically hadn't been invited to move in yet.

For the next few days, Olive enjoyed her new outdoor setup with regular meals, playtime, and a hooman who was getting more attached by the hour. Eventually, it was time to take her to the vet and check for a microchip. Instead of bringing Olive home afterward, though, the shelter took her in. Her new friend was crushed and worried that their little backyard buddy might be gone for good. Four days together was apparently more than enough time to get emotionally invested, because Olive even got her own playlist while they were apart. We fully support this level of cat attachment.

Fostering a cat is a beautiful thing. Sure, not everyone can do it. Some people - like basically all the writers at ICHC - have a bad habit of wanting to adopt every single cat that we see, and so fostering and getting attached to a cat that we are not supposed to keep is a bit problematic. But the people who do it are angels. Giving a cat a home until they are able to get one furrever instead of having them stay at a shelter or, god forbid, have them thrown back outside, is everything. Teaching these cats that humans can be kind, can be gentle, can be loving. Some of these foster cats come from the streets, and it takes a long time to gain their trust. But it's worth it. Once they learn that humans are not that bad, they can finally go home with one and live the spoiled and happy life that they actually deserve.

The family in today's story was doing that for two cats - a momma cat and her kitten. And of course they got attached. It was unavoidable. You'd never know from these photos just how rough things started for these five kittens.

Reddit user Gonkalicious_2176 shared the litter's story on r/FosterAnimals after taking on their first experience fostering this many kittens at such a young age. A friend had spotted a Facebook post looking for someone to take the motherless litter, and they agreed to help.

Thank goodness they did.

One kitten had already passed away before they arrived, leaving five babies behind. The remaining kittens were found alone in a box on the porch, filthy and severely underfed. Three were desperately begging for food, while the two white kittens, Molly and Maggie, were unconscious. Their breathing was the only indication they were still alive.

This is where things get pretty incredible.

The kittens were rushed home, and sugar rubbed onto Molly and Maggie's gums helped revive them. Going from barely clinging on to becoming healthy little kittens is one heck of a glow-up, and their foster family deserves plenty of credit for getting them there.

There was apparently a lot of trial and error along the way. This wasn't a household accustomed to caring for a litter of five fragile babies, but giving up clearly wasn't an option.

Now Simba, King, Cali, Molly, and Maggie are 8 weeks old and thriving. They have toys to attack, wet food to devour, and their first round of vaccines behind them. Basically, they're finally getting to worry about normal kitten things instead of survival.

Their foster says the experience has become the highlight of their year, and we can see why.

Watching five tiny kittens go from such a rough beginning to growing stronger every day has to make every sleepless night worth it.

Most people decide they want to adopt a cat. They go to the shelter, or search online in local Facebook groups if anyone is trying to find forever homes for a litter of kittens that was born in their backyard, for example. But it's the human part of the equation that usually takes the charge and tries to actively search for a cat to add to the family. But that's not the case with some cats who are being adopted, because they simply adopt themselves. It doesn't matter what's the living or financial situation of the person, the cat has made up their mind - and they're staying.

When a cat adopts themselves, it's an unmistakable step by the notorious Cat Distribution System. This mysterious whatever-they-are seems to install a software update in the cat that sends the command to be adopted by their designated person - attributed to them by the CDS, of course. They do this matchmaking between the purrfect cat and the perfect person. And when it's about the cat who decides they're staying - it's even stronger than usual.

And that's what happened with the now-cat of u/Rotenmango. What's the biggest green flag a guy can have? Being loved by cats. There is no other answer.

There are a lot of good qualities to look for in a partner. Some people really value bravery and courage - someone who will stand up for others to help the people they care about feel safe. Others will search for a partner who is a provider. But when I was looking for my purrfect partner, there was one thing that I knew I needed in order for it to be right - he needed to be loved by cats. Not just someone who loves cats, but someone that felines instinctively feel is approachable and trustworthy.

For all of us who have lived with and know cats, you know how rare a purrsonality trait that is. That purrson needs to be soft and inviting, but not a pushover. They need to be compassionate and kind, and have a belief that even the smallest creatures are worthy of our love. I knew my husband was the one when, the first time he met my cat (I only had one back then), she immediately went up and laid on his lap. She's not purrticularly fond of strangers, and usually hides when someone new enters the house. She was curious and trusted him within seconds of meeting him.

Being a new cat mom is hard enough. Litters are rarely just one baby. Far more often than not, these new moms have many mouths to feed and wiggling fluffballs to keep in line. We see it in our everyday lives. If you've ever adopted or fostered a cat who had just given birth, you know these mommas need breaks. These mommas bring their babies to you to take over babysitting duties. They have to teach their kiddos how to drink water without getting it up their nose. They have to teach them how to eat, and if they puke, then how to puke exactly on the carpet and nowhere else. they have to show them exactly how to treat their humans, how to make sure we're good servants for them. Motherhood is hard in every species. It's the greatest challenge there is. Being with a human makes the whole thing so much easier… if that human is a kind one.

The cat in this story was dumped by a not-so-kind human. This momma cat was sweet, gentle. She didn't deserve to be taken out of the warm home that she was in with her nine babies in her paws and dumped under a dumpster in freezing weather. Having pets when we are young is something that shapes who we are as people.

We do not get to say this enough but cat rescuers truly are the angels of the cat community. Going out into the community, providing food, medicine and occasionally trapping for TNR. They do the work not for the money but for the cats and as you will come to find in this story the things they come upon are truly incredible and could not have been handled better by anyone else. This feline family was luckier than most when it comes to rescues.

We have heard of cats being found at the bottom of bins, on top of roofs and pretty much any other place you can imagine. But in the trunk of an abandoned car is certainly a first. This scary situation was come upon by a couple of cat rescuers who were out on a daily feeding route. giving the strays of the area something to keep them going while also getting a count on the number of cats currently in the local area. School is officially back in session, for better or for worse. If you're a parent, you're probably pretty relieved to not have to entertain your kids 24/7 while working full time. If you're a student, you're probably wishing you had at least a few more days of summer back before returning to yet another year of studies. If you're a university student, the biggest regret you have is leaving your parents' washing machine behind and going back to living in the dorm, where you have to actually clean up after yourself. C'est la vie.

But going back to school isn't all bad, especially if you live on a university campus with cool teachers, like our Calculus professor today! On the way to one of his lectures, a university student found a friendly orphaned orange kitten. Not wanting to leave the kitten alone, they asked their professor if they could bring the kitten to class, and he said yes! The video below shows all the cuteness that ensued, and we can guarantee you that nothing productive was done that day.

The Calculus students played with the kitten, but it was the professor who really found his joy. He pulled out his laser pointer, entertaining the cat while attempting to teach, but eventually, it all devolved into filming and enjoying the kitten to its fullest extent. I'm sure that whatever they were supposed to learn that day, be it standard deviations or integrals, could wait until next class.

The next day, some students took the cat to an animal shelter, where he was given a checkup, a bath, and prepurred for adoption.

He was adopted less than a week later.
