5 More Facts to Know About Amethyst

I know it’s hard to believe but February is already here and it’s the month of one of my favorite gemstones, Amethyst. Last year I mentioned a few fun facts about Amethyst and now I have a few more to share with you plus some tips about wearing Amethyst.

1. Beware of sunlight – If possible, try to avoid wearing natural amethyst stones in sunlight. These stones are quite sensitive and their color fades in direct sunlight or when put near heat. In certain lighting Amethyst can also appear colorless. So if you’re planning on vacationing on a beach, I’d recommend you leave your Amethyst jewelry safely at home.

2. Positive Aura - In India, they place an amethyst stone between the eyebrows to calm the mind and to help achieve inner peace and enhance positive energy. Indians claim it helps control emotions.

3. Stone of Love - Legend says that St. Valentine wore an Amethyst ring. In the Middle Ages, if a heart-shaped amethyst set in silver was given by a wife to her husband, it would bring the newlyweds happiness and peace of remainder of their lives.

4. Fit for royalty – Purple has long been associated as a royal color. Since this rich color is found in Amethysts, this stone was often worn by royal families. The darker the stone, the more valuable it is. These days, royals do not wear amethyst as much since this stone has been discovered more frequently making it more affordable for us commoners.

5. Protection - Amethyst is said to protect against seduction and prevents you from getting too intoxicated when drinking alcohol. Some farmers also kept Amethyst on hand to protect their crops and others used it to protect against wild animals or in battle.

Maya Rudolph in Drusy Earrings

At Sunday night’s Screen Actor’s Guild Awards the comedic relief was brought to us by Bridesmaid stars Maya Rudolph, Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. They came on stage to present their movie and explained the drinking game they made up involving ‘Scorcese’.

The movie Bridesmaids focuses around bride-to-be Maya Rudolph and we had our eyes on her on the red carpet. She is one of many stars catching onto the drusy jewelry trend recently. Last month I introduced you to new drusy jewelry available at Ice. The jewelry pieces are typically set in natural shapes with the surface of the stone covered with crystals.

Top 5 Gold Looks at the SAG Awards

At last night’s Screen Actor’s Guild Awards we noticed yellow gold accents everywhere! It’s no nice to see since white gold and silver has left it’s yellow alternative hanging in the background with most recent jewelry styles. It’s time for it to shine again and here are some of our favorite looks from last night proving that yellow gold is back.

1. Viola Davis – The actress won the Leading Female Actor award for her role in “The Help”. She glowed on stage as she gave her inspirational acceptance speech in a white Marchesa. The strapless Grecian style gown with gold detail was accessorized with a lace design bangle very similar to this filigree design ring. More gold was seen in her dangling earrings that showed off beautifully with her hairdo.

2. Emma Stone – Viola’s “The Help” co-star also showed off some golden accents in her long drop earrings and her knuckle clutch. Her gown was a tea length Alexandre McQueen in black lace. Gold jewelry compliments her amber hair beautifully.

3. Angelina Jolie (pictured right) – The actress was also in black and gold with her long draped gown by Jenny Packham. She accessorized the shiny black dress with large gold hoops with black accents and a gold bangle bracelet.

4. Giuliana Rancic – After undergoing a double mastectomy just last month, this E! TV Presenter is already back to work and looking fabulous. Unlike the rest of the women on this list, Giuliana paired gold with a bright red gown making a dramatic look. A statement gold necklace grabbed our attention and was paired with a skinny gold belt for a little added flare.

5. Kyra Sedgwick – Another stunner in red paired this fiery look with yellow gold jewelry. Kyra got lots of attention for showing off her new tattoo peeking through her cut-out Emilio Pucci gown. All her jewelry was yellow gold but we had our eyes on her gold bracelets.

Feather Jewelry

The feather trend was picking up steadily last year but now a month into 2012 and fashionistas are flocking to grab onto this look. At first we saw many stars like Jessica Biel, Drew Barrymore, even Steven Tyler wearing feather pieces braided into their hair. The trend quickly moved to earrings and other feather jewelry. We also saw lots of feathers featured in gowns worn at the Golden Globes and People’s Choice Awards this month.

Ice has several new feather jewelry pieces that stand out from what you’re used to seeing. Typically you’ll notice people wearing actual feathers or imitation feather that often look cheap. Our designs replicate the beauty of feathers but with the use of red and white diamonds. I’m sure birds will appreciate us not plucking their feathers for jewelry and seeing their beauty shine through with diamonds.

I’d recommend wearing these pieces with earth tone clothing to compliment their natural color. Also, if you’re going to be wearing feather jewelry please refrain from pairing it with other feather clothing. The goal of this look shouldn’t be to look like an actual bird. So keep it to one feather piece per outfit.

Best of Golden Globes Jewelry

The Golden Globes are one of my favorite award show because it combines both TV and movie stars in one night – double the fashion fun. There were lots of highlights from the show; Ricky Gervais kept the night entertaining, Tina Fey photobombing Amy Poehler was hilarious, Felicity Hoffman and husband William H. Macy’s duet was adorable. Lots of great moments throughout the night but of course our eyes were glued to all things that sparkled during the night.

Lots of big and bold jewelry hit the red carpet but there were 3 undeniable trends.

1. Diamond Bracelets: Whether they were large cuff bracelets, stacked bangles or tennis bracelets – sparkly diamond bracelets were everywhere at Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards. For many stars, one arm full of bracelets wasn’t enough, they had sparkly arm candy on both arms for an extra dose of glamour like Kate Beckinsale. Beauties Elle Macpherson, Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon couldn’t choose just one and decided to stack up multiple bangles too.

2. Chandelier Earrings: Small or large, this style of earrings were graced by many stars including Sofia Vergara and Jessica Alba (pictured right). We recently got a few new chandelier earrings that I think are worthy of any red carpet. Former Beverly Hills 90210 star Kathleen Robertson wore incredible turquoise earrings that added a burst of color to her white gown – also love the red lips!

3. Green: It seems every year during awards show season, a selection of celebs show off stunning emerald jewelry. We can’t forget Angelina Jolie’s emeralds at the Oscars a few years ago. This year Julianne Moore and Debra Messing were all sporting Emerald earrings. Julianna Margelies had on emerald colored earrings but they were actually made of jadeite. Loved the contrast of these green earrings and purple gown. To get the emerald color without the high price, you can always try green onyx to get that vibrant green look.

Smokey Quartz in Pink

There are some color combinations that were made for each other. In jewelry, I adore the color combo of smokey quartz set in pink rhodium or pink gold. These chocolaty brown and blush pink hues create a warm contrast that fit perfectly in any Fall or Winter wardrobe. Since these are very earthy tones you won’t have a hard time matching them to your outfits everyday.

Our latest jewelry pieces feature large smokey quartz stones accented with white diamonds all set in pink rhodium. Like rose gold, pink rhodium jewelry is so hot right now. I can’t get enough of it! These pieces have a rich look to them – making it feel like you’re wearing jewelry made for royalty.

Lea Michele’s People’s Choice Earrings

The people have spoken! They voted Lea Michele as their favorite TV comedy actress last night at the People’s Choice Awards. She won for her role as the over-achieving Rachel Berry on Glee. Lea also got my vote for one of the best dressed and accessorized of the night.

She sported a white fringe flapper style Marchesa dress that was both classy and sexy. The songstress paired this dress with beautiful chandelier earrings that showed off nicely with her hair swept to one side. We noticed many starlets last night adorning long earrings similar to Lea’s. Chandelier and drop earrings are seen everywhere right now! Are you adding long earrings to your jewelry collection?
