Another Session has been added to the RICE Conference

Just a quick reminder to register for the RICE Conference in January. We've just added another session "Interactive White Boards" click here to get the full details of what is being offered as well as being able to print a registration form so that you can fax it over to us. Don't forget the next RICE meeting on November 5th at RIROE starting at 4:30 PM. Cindy Arkebauer will talk about TECH 2010, Poster sessions and being a presenter for the upcoming ICE Conference in February will also be part of the Nov. 5th meeting.

Brrrrr!!! You would think that it was winter or something out there. As we creep closer to the holidays please keep in mind your registration for the upcoming January deadline for the RICE Conference.

If you are interested in the Moodle session but aren't sure how you will use it after the class, please note:

Participants in the Moodle Workshop will be given an opportunity to establish their own FREE account on our Moodle Server.

Free ICE Conference Registration!

The 2010 ICE Conference will again be held this year at Pheasant Run, from February 23rd to the 26th. You can earn a free, 2-day, conference registration by volunteering to work at the ICE Booth for a 3 hour shift.

Split Shift Wednesday night 3-5:30 and Thursday 12:15-12:45
Thursday morning 9:30-12:30
Thursday afternoon 12:30-3:30; 2:00-5:00
Friday morning 9:30-12:30
Friday afternoon 12-3 (includes break down of booth from 2-3)

Upcoming RICE Meeting Information!

Has your school informed you of the their plans for meeting the new state requirements for Internet Safety education? Do you have ideas? We have a timely presentation planned for Thursday, September 10 at 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Join us at the Moline ROE office for our own ISTE representative, Ginger Long. She will share the latest information on this important topic.

Of course, we will have pizza and door prizes--new year, new prizes. Come network with other teachers in the area and join in the food and fun. Please let us know if you can make it.

Something New for the New School Year

Each new school year brings challenges and opportunities for students and education professionals. Rock Island Area Computing Educators (RICE), a chapter of Illinois Computing Educators (ICE), was established to provide opportunities for anyone in the education community to explore using technology to enhance and expand student learning opportunities. The purpose of RICE is to encourage the development and use of computers and technology in all facets of the educational process; assist in the professional growth of its members and other interested parties through the use of technology and computers; distribute information state wide about computing and technology; and build a support network among its' members. As a chapter of ICE, RICE receives lists of ICE members who chose RICE as their chapter or who were assigned to RICE based on geography.

Each year the RICE Board meets in the summer to plan meetings for the next school year. We are really excited this year!! This summer we decided to replace our January evening meeting with a Saturday morning mini-conference on January 23, 2010. Our goal is to develop an annual technology mini-conference for those of us in the northwestern part of the state. For this to succeed, we need one important element—YOU! If you enjoy the ICE conference in St. Charles, help us develop a smaller version in the Western part of the state. Let’s provide a more convenient and less expensive option that can focus on our needs and interests.

So how about it? Look for the registration information in this newsletter. Contact the Rock Island County Regional Office of Education in Moline to register for the mini-conference. Let’s meet face to face and have some fun, win door prizes, network and learn something new. Help your RICE Chapter membership build a resource for all the members in Northwestern Illinois.

8:30 - 9:00 AM - Registration, Welcome and FTC selling

9:00 - 10:15 AM - Session A: Podcasting or Session B: FTC

10:15 AM - Break

10:30 - 11:45 AM - Session A: Moodle or Session B: Non-Photoshop

11:45 AM - NOON - Door prizes and closing

Cost for this mini-conference is $5.00 for members or $10 for non-members
