Ford Drive Blogger Event – say hello to my little friend.

It all started with Kai Petermann from Heldth who had organised a few photoshoots for his site with Ford Germany, all set around Fords first Blogger related Event. Ford Germany is based in Cologne, my hometown, and through that was always a presence when living here. From friends who work there to the big factory grounds and obviously the cars. It was a very nice two days which started with meeting Kai and picking up a Ford RS200 Rally car from the Ford Classic team. Crazy!!! I mean driving through the streets of Cologne in a classic rally car is super awesome. Though that little bugger, the RS200 not Kai, is really small. I barely fit in the passenger seat, so driving that thing was completely out of the question. And as I was only there to help out Kai, if help needed, I didn’t shoot the car myself, yet, but also could drive it for him to get some drive by shots or so. Chopping off my legs would have been to obsessive though I think.

After that we headed back to the Hotel to get ready for the evening activities, which were par meet and greet with the Ford and Ford Classic team and a rare chance of a factory tour on which we where even allowed to shoot photo and video. A very cool experience as it was my first car manufacturer factory tour, I was really amazed how “silent” and calm everything was. So we went down the complete production line of the brand new Ford Fiesta. A car I was very excited about from the day I got my invite to the event, especially the Fiesta ST. So after a exciting day at the Ford factory the next day was all for driving. We had a wide variety of cars to choose from, the Fiesta ST, Focus ST, the Kuga, even a US Explorer and F-150. Our choice was very easy though as we both were very eager to try out the new Fiesta ST and that wonderful Lava Red had gotten me from the first second. Kai wasn’t too eager on the color in the beginning, but I guess he changed his mind in the end.

As for the Fiesta ST, I am very positively surprised. What a fantastic little car. It has enough power to bring you a lot of fun, on the Autobahn or the country roads. Its agile as you would think, there is no major understeer in quick corners and the manual transmission is short and precise. For a daily drive that you could do a few laps on a trackday with, this is one of the biggest surprise cars for this year so far. And I can’t even imagine how much more of a tracktool it could get with a few minor mods to the chassis, maybe lower it a litte… I digress.

Mille Miglia 2013. Part three of three. actually of four.

So by now you might have guessed that I had a blast with the Mercedes-Benz Classic team at the Mille Miglia. So lets talk about a few things from a production standpoint. As so often I had planned to shoot photos and video together. I had my gear packed accordingly and also brought my brand new Manfrotto FigRig which I fell in love with! My Monopod plus most of my Nikon gear plus an external 7″ HDMI Monitor for shooting Video.

Of course time was a big issue, in a rally like this no one will wait for you, no shot can, normally, be taken twice and you need plan ahead. Planning ahead wasn’t really an option as I have never been to the Mille before. So I planned as broad as I could and hoped for the best. From this side I was actually covered pretty well. Even shooting photo and video simultaneously worked like a charm as I only used my DSLRs and did not bring a dedicated machine for the video. So the biggest “problems” really were access and timing. The cars drive on open roads, mixed in traffic and you need to drive as they do to get the footage you need. For that you need to have a driver you trust and who trusts you also. Unfortunately we were not allowed to hang out of the cars windows etc. from MB side. As our driver was form MB it was quite problematic to get him convinced otherwise and we didn’t know each other beforehand. If I ever cover the Mille or any similar Event like this again I would prefer to bring my own team, our dedicated production vehicle and so on. And to be honest it wouldn’t be that much more hassle or so to organize and just sooo much easier to shoot.

One interesting bit I noticed with a lot of photographers around the Mille from all different media and so on, no one did trust the weather sealing of their cameras. They had the everything from professional Kata rain covers to the strangest DIY solutions and umbrellas… didn’t really understand that. My D4 and D800 never had a problem in even heavy rain. Just swipe it dry with a towel before you change lenses or cards and you’re golden. And make sure you have a weather sealed cam!

As you can tell I decided to make one more post in the near future, there is just too much to show. It won’t be this week, but I have some really good stuff lined up besides that. So have a great start into this fresh week and enjoy these beauties!

Mille Miglia 2013. Part two of three.

The next day we returned to the Convention Center to get ready to hit the road and it was certainly much busier than before. Strangely enough it felt very german dominated. Not by german car brands, but germans participating. Great to see people from all over the world though preparing their wonderful cars to get this thing started. Call it being unlucky… fate… or whatever but my old friend “bad weather” caught up with us, just as everyone got ready to leave for the Teatro Grande in Brescia.

As I mentioned before I wouldn’t really agree with the people saying that the Mille Miglia has lost its “racing spirit”. Sure its not a race anymore, but it also is not a sunday afternoon coffee drive either. Its just fantastic to see how a lot of the drivers/owners push their really expensive and rare classic sportscars really hard through bad weather, narrow streets and small towns. One of the coolest moments for sure was trying to catch/keep up with Jochen Mass in his pre-war Merc. These guys are having a lot of fun and that is vibe you certainly feel. Most people are in a good mood, eager to get back on the road, drive proper times and just enjoy themselves. Not more I would ask for. Or add.

One thing I am not too sure about at the Mille were the onslaught of modern cars, mostly Ferraris, that were participants and not support or media vehicles. Don’t get me wrong, I like modern cars and also Ferraris, but the Mille should be all about classic cars. and of course the focus for a lot of people shifts when suddenly one or even two brand new Paganis drive by. Ah well. Maybe something that will change next time around or so, I certainly would hope so.

Mille Miglia 2013. Part one of three.

About two month ago I was asked by Mercedes-Benz Classic and the Mercedes-Benz Museum if I was interested in joining the Mille Miglia this year. For those wo don’t know the Mille Miglia, it started as a open road endurance race in 1927. After some time and some fatal crashes and so many drastic changes in the modern time the Mille Miglia change from a race to a rally. A lot people say that it’s “just” a show drive, but from just this experience I can positively say it ain’t entirely so. At least not for the majority or drivers, but I will get to that a bit later.

You basically drive from the town of Brescia to Ferrara to Rome and back to Brescia in three days. Pass through some of the most beautiful cities like Siena, Florence and even San Marino. Obviously there are a few more stops in between, especially for specially timed sections and so on. A lot of drivers and co-drivers train all year to get that part spot on and drive their cars to the hundreds of a second exactly and clock in as perfectly as they can.

You normally don’t get a lot of sleep, drive a lot and just see some crazy cool stuff, paired with the beauty of the italian roads, cities and villages you pass through. The food was great, the people you meet are all very excited to be there, most because of their love for driving their fantastic cars in this historical event, others more because they love to be seen in their cars attending the Mille. And both have a place there.

So my journey started a few weeks before the main event and I went down to Stuttgart to join the Mercedes-Benz team and some of the drivers that were going to drive in the classic Mercs. Basically a little orientation and getting used to the cars program for the Mercedes-Benz drivers, which were a mix of private drivers, invited guests and some testimonials. On that day we were a small group, but it was a nice warming up event, even for me. The weather had decided to not play nice, though it was a great preparation for things to come. We spent a few hours at MB HQ before taking the cars out on the open road. There it struck me for the first time… we are taking these cars that easily cost in the higher six figure range onto the rainy open road and not only around the block. Not really a problem, but for many many years I encountered “car people” and collectors that treat the cars mostly better than anything else in their life and not even take out their cars in light rain or when the streets are wet. So this was a very refreshing surprise. The day was over quite quickly though and I went back to home the same day.

A few weeks later, same trip to Stuttgart and a car full of equipment. Another night spent in Stuttgart, but this time me and my contact at the MB Museum met up at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre and checked out one of the trucks that was loaded with a bunch of the cars for the Mille Miglia. The driver kindly waited for me to get a glimpse and some shots before he left for Brescia. On top of that I got a little tour of the place and some alone time. You could literally spend days in that place and shoot and shoot and shoot. Some day I just might. The next morning we grabbed the R-Class a hit the Autobahn towards Austria and Italy.

A few hours later we arrived in Brescia in the best weather imaginable to meet the rest of the team. The trucks with the cars for the rally weren’t due till tomorrow, so we had some time to relax and I could get my gear organised a little. At this point you could start to feel something shift. Not sure if it was the tension, excitement or something, but it was in the air. The night went past quite quickly and I was extremely excited to check out the arrival of the cars at the Brescia Convention Center and to see all the other beauties that were arriving and already waiting there.

Event Photography – 24h Nürburgring – Nismo Edition

I arrived at the Nürburgring after an eleven hour drive from Brescia, Italy. I had been on my Mille Miglia trip before, and yes there is a lot of fun stuff coming from that too, but as the dates of these two great events overlapped a little, it got quite a challenge. Lucky me most of the drive up from Italy it was raining like crazy and just dried u right before I got to the ring. Nismo was so kind to invite me over to their race camp which you might remember from two years ago.

I had a few nice ideas what to shoot and see while I was at the ring, as a complete coverage alone is obviously not really possible and was really looking forward to it, especially as the Nismo Race Camp has the perfect location to get some pretty awesome footage. Unfortunately though rain caught up with me a started pouring down on us. At some point it got so bad the racing officials stopped the race.

Anyway, this really threw me off my plan and all. After nearly a week of lots of driving, few hours of sleep and working day and night, in rain mostly, I had no chance of staying awake and do something, as there was nothing to do than sleep. The tents were under water mostly and my car full with gear, so after a few hours of turning around in my car I had to call it quits. Especially as it wasn’t clear when the race would be continued again.

Ah well. Hope next year the dates won’t collide with another big event. So here just a few impressions from that night.

Event Photography – Mille Miglia 2013

As you might have guessed by the title of this post I will be attending this years Mille Miglia. Not in one of the classic car, but a support car. Mercedes-Benz Classic invited me to join this little adventure and we are going to have a lot of fun I am sure. From some of the Mille Miglia Veterans I was warned that lack of sleep and sitting in the car a lot will be the two biggest “problems”, but hey, nothing new on that front, right?!

As you are reading this I am on my way down to Stuttgart to get everything ready for our departure tomorrow morning. So here are three little teaser photos for you that I shot a few weeks ago in Stuttgart as some of the participants got the chance to test-drive the cars the will be driving through the wonderful streets of northern Italy.

Event Photography – MB Blogger Connect and re:publica 13

Here is basically my “best-of” from this weeks visit to Berlin. I really do enjoy this city a lot. At some point I really should look into staying there a bit longer and get some work in the area. Anyway it started all off with the Mercedes-Benz Blogger Connect last sunday. The Blogger Connect was a very nice Event where Mercedes-Benz invited a group of non-automotive Bloggers for a meet and greet. They also had invited three of their Designers and three Experts in different automotive fields to get some interesting talks going. It is always a wonderful thing to mix up creative people from completely different branches of life and get them to talk in an easy going environment.

The following two days I spent at the re:bublica 2013 Conference, which again this year was a blast. Since their move from the Friedrichstadt Palast to the Station the whole Event just got a huge boost somehow. And its a fantastic place to get into some nice talks with people you haven’t met in some time and to meet some new people along the way. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend the third day, but much better than not going. looking forward to next year for sure!

I have published quite a few of the photos I shot over on Dicke Hipster, a blog I run with a few friends in german, already but for all you non-german speaking people out there, I thought I’ll give you an idea of these two nice events too. check out these posts for more photos later on.

Car Photography – Jaguar F-Type

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of giving the brand spanking new Jaguar F-Type a spin. Jaguar Germany had invited us to a small airport out in the countryside. We got the chance to drive the car on a handling course with some instructors first and then enjoy the fantastic road in the area.

As always, I am no car tester, but a car enthusiast so I will keep it very simple. This car is a lot of fun! And an absolute beauty! On top of that the sound this car produces is just completely crazy. No matter if its the V6 or V8. Obviously they sound quite different, but both with an extra portion of masculinity.

Further below you’ll find a nice pull-away video and an extra sound-clip so you can get a better idea of why I am so excited. I never heard an “out-of-the-factory” car sound this insane. The backfiring and rumbling. Pure petrolhead bliss.

Let’s get to the fun part here. We have as always the complementary event photos, but further down, and I don’t say that likely, some of my best car work yet!

Event Photography – Land Rover Experience Tour End Qualification

A bit over a week ago we were part of the Land Rover Experience Tour End Qualification. When Land Rover approached me to cover the Event I was very excited. I have been to the Land Rover Experience Center in Wülfrath before if you remember and I am a Land Rover Fan for a lot of years so I had somewhat of an idea what was going to happen. Still there we quite a few surprises ahead of us.

Lets start with some hard facts. 60 participants, two and a half days of learning how to use GPS, give first aid, off-roading and all wheel drive techniques, reading and using roadbooks, building bridges and more crazy things like that.

We were with them most of time and also only slept about five hours altogether that weekend, but hey, who needs sleep, right?!

Well why did those 60 people do that? Especially as they had to succeed in previous trials to even get here. Well, twelve lucky winners will be on one of three stages between Berlin and Mumbai down the Silkroad. Wow what a trip. Lets not get ahead of ourselves and dive right into the photos. A looooooooooot of photos.

Car Photography – Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

And here we are with the last part of our trip to the Paul Ricard Raceway in France. The following text is again written by the fantastic Mr. Fabian Mechtel and make sure to check out the SLS AMG Electric Drive Post if you haven’t yet. Also for my German speaking friends check out our post over at Evocars Magazin. Enjoy and have a great weekend and actually I have a little something for you SLS fans coming real soon too that I completely forgot about.

So let’s get started.

Well, 571PS certainly are not enough. And the looks of an ordinary SLS gullwing are not exiting enough – that’s what Mercedes must have thought when they started developing the Black Series SLS.

But they did have a point. Because the standard SLS was never really at home on a racetrack. It may easily set your trousers on fire, but never won a prize for fastest lap-times or cornering accuracy. The back end was to loose and a quite lousy traction-level, so the 6.2 litre V8 smoked the tires quite fast.

The gullwing therefore is more a grand tourer and heavy muscle car – what the Black Series wants to change radically. The guys at AMG ripped out 70kg of equipment (remaining 1550kg), tweaked the engine up to 631PS (and lost some torque due to more aggressive camshafts), fiddled with the DCT-transmission software and uprateted the suspension. But that’s not it. The gullwing got bigger. And fatter. The flared the wheelarches (+13mm front, +26mm rear), added lots of carbon fiber and attached spiltters to the front and a massive wing to the back.

And the results are truly great. The Black gullwing feels now very at home on track. The steering may be the best part of it: very precise, if not tactile , it kind of darts the SLS into corners and the new – and very sticky – Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires hold the heavy racer exactly on the chosen line. Then there is the new electronically operated limited slip diff in the back and the superb throttel response oft hat glorious engine – boy, you just have to love this.

Sure, all this comes with a price. 249.990€ reads the chart. That is not far away from the 268.400€ of the magnificant Ferrari F12berlinetta and way more expensive than other track-rockets like the Porsche GT3 RS or Mc Laren MP4-12C. But a Black Series AMG has never been the last word in trackday-performance or discrete styling. They have always been hooligans out of Stuttgart. And the SLS Black is there best yet.

oh and yes, you most probably spotted the E63 AMG in there too, we had the chance to drive that puppy too, but I didn’t find the time, so I just threw those on there with the rest, Fabian has a nice post about the car in german though too, when they test-drove the car in Barcelona. Aaaand Jens Stratmann of Rad-ab.com has a post from the day at Paul Ricard, also in german though.

Car Photography – Mercedes-Benz CLA

Mercedes shrinked the CLS. And as more good news they added a some curves, bulges and lots of chrome. As a result the – so called – CLA is even better looking than ist bigger brother. Even if the back is again not particulary good looking. But there will be a Shooting Brake version of the CLA, so that will be fixed too.

Despite that issue the guys at Mercedes are very excited about their new model. Not only because of the style, but because of its sportiness. Even if the CLA is based on the A-Class and therefore front-wheel drive rather than a classic RWD-layout they told us how much fun it is to drive with the McPherson strut at the front and the multi-link axle at the back.

That is why we climbed into the CLA 250. It ist he most powerful version yet (the CLA 45 AMG will be presented in New York next week) and promised the most driving pleasure down at the twisty roads next to Saint Tropez. But a big promise was all it made. From a clever and state-of-the-art equipped 2-litre turbocharged engine with 211PS and 350Nm of torque you expect just more. Sure, you can excuse the sound, but not the way it delivers its power. There is lots of low-end torque and even plenty in the midrange, but the more you come near the redline, the less the engine wants to rev. It feels almost strangled.

And so more like a diesel than a razor-sharp top of the range petrol. But the engine is not the only problem oft he CLA 250, the 7G-MCT gearbox is another one. In ECO-Mode it runs up the gears like a maniac, even in town it shifts up to seven. And then, when you want to overtake it will leave you there for too long until it kicks down three or four gears at once. But don’t be fooled – SPORT-Mode is even worse. Put it in S and the CLA thinks he is a SLS Black on his Nürburgring record-attempt.. All the time.

But when the CLA 250 necessarily comes with the multi-clutch gearbox just take the CLA 200 with the manual option. Why? Because all is well then. Sure, the 1.6 with its 156PS won’t win prices in drag-racing, but it is enough most of the time. And if there are rivals such as a Golf GTI or Focus ST you just have to push harder. Because the chassis of the CLA is great. Proper balance, enough comfort and yet on the safe side if you are not really concentrating. The understeer won’t annoy you for long, but when you really get going most of it is gone, due to a great amount throttle adjustability. And that really is a first for a small Merc. Even the steering is suprisingly accurate.

So if you want a stylish car that is able to put a big smile on your face, even if it doesn’t win all the races out there – keep the CLA 200 in mind. (And if you love winning just wait `til next weeks arrival oft he CLA 45 AMG…)

A few weeks ago I was invited to a fantastic and exclusive Mercedes-Benz Event at the Paul Ricard Racetrack in France. It was day of great fun, lots of work and two of my most favorite things in the world, Driving great cars on a racetrack and shooting photos and videos of great cars on a racetrack! I will not go into detail here too much as you can read all about the first car over at Cool Hunting. So make sure to head over there! The fantastic Mr. Fabian Mechtel was kind enough to write for me and help me out.

Model Photography – Joyce – good bye (slightly NSFW)

Some shoots really give you a lot of opportunities to shoot a lot of different styles and so on, but it also lets you discover new techniques, materials you can use for a variety of things, like backgrounds, gobos etc. In this case I fell in love with the concrete wall in the room as a backdrop. So calm, still not bland and so many ways to play with it. So I chose the wall as a backdrop for the next photos, a three light set up, shaped as a triangle slightly turned towards Joyce, a variable ND filter and we were good to go. I think these are my favourite shots out of this shoot.

Also take not of Luca’s fantastic BTS shots and check out his side of the story on his blog. Really great having him with me on that shoot.

And we are getting close to the last set of my shoot with Joyce in Paris. After the red something more plain and simple. Its nice to challenge yourself with restrictions like only using one specific lens, not using the artificial light or just using artificial light or just limit your location and try to get the most out of it. You can use textures, shapes, colors, perspective, props and so much more. And I think post production is also a good way to spice it up. I never have been a huge fan of photoshopping your photos to death, but processing your photos differently has always been a part of photography. And of course also in the film days. From choosing what film to shoot on to all the processing in the dark room.

The great behind the scenes footage is again the work of my good friend Luca Sartoni, who also has a post ready for your enjoyment with his own view on this shoot. So make sure you check that one out too!

We had to try a few things out till we got here, but that is also always part of the fun, the improvisation. MixedBag – Vienna Edition

So on Saturday we did a little test shoot and I actually just tried one setup really, but I got some interesting results. I used two strip lights coming from top and and to the sides down on our very kind model Mo, plus one flash coming from the front with a gridded snoot.at some point I took the grid away and replaced it with two strips of gaffers tape and these are the results you see. Really sweet as I think. though the right one didn’t find as much approval as for example the left one, though I like the one on the right too. Really would love to get some more opinions on the three shots.

As always the fantastic Mr. Sartoni provided the BTS photo, also make sure to check out his blog post as he shot some fantastic photos with his own setup. Very nice work.

Joyce and I obviously shot more than one set. And sometimes lighting gets as easy as a on-flashhead reflector with a grid. The hotel room was so tiny and full of gear, baggage and three people that actually anything much more elaborate would have become much more complicated.

LeWeb 2012 – The Instax Gallery

Long overdue, but with all the stuff going on it just wasn’t the right time. So here at last the photos of the mighty Fuji Instax. You think I am going a bit too far with that, but let me tell you, I fell in love with my two Instax cameras and I really think they are a must have for every camera and photo interested person. I think I would mostly recommend the Instax Mini, just because it is easier to handle. I will write a little review about both cameras soon too, and there will be more photos coming. You might have seen the #mbrt13 Instax post.

So when I was planning the speakers gallery for Leweb 2012 in Paris, I contacted Fuji and told them about the idea. They kindly provided me with the cameras and enough film to go through with it. The photo are wonderful and it was a refreshing thing to shoot with the big Instax, as it sparked peoples interest and made them relax a bit more. As we were shooting all the shots, we started hanging the Instax photos on the wall next to our booth with gaffers tape. We constantly had people stopping, taking a look and even taking pictures of it. In our digital age, these kinds of photos are very special and give you at least the same instant satisfaction as digital photos.

And as a very special treat, Luca has posted some great behind the scenes shots too!

So here I finally present the Instax Speakers Gallery of LeWeb 2012. I will post the “regular” gallery very soon too.

On day three Luca took me to band practice. What a fun jam. Way too loud, but lots of fun for sure. The photos are griddy, noisy and I think fit perfectly for the occasion, so enjoy!!

So, back in december, if you guys remember, I shot the speakers gallery at Leweb Paris. I stayed in town a few days longer as I was also meeting a few of my good friends, so I also organized a photo shoot with a model. Joyce came up on my search on Model Mayhem and I think we were a good team and I am very pleased with the results. Also always a great challenge to shoot in those small Hotel rooms. Luckily my good friend Luca was there, too. He assisted me a little and mainly shot the most fantastic behind the scenes photos ever, which you will find at the end of this post. Make sure to check out his work too over at his website!

It’s nigh, but not here yet. We finish our digital stills journey today with a huge post. 52 photos. There is still a bit more to come though. We have a whole bunch of wonderful Fuji Instax scans coming up, as the Video I am still editing! After that though I promise at least one non-car photo post. And a glorious one for sure. I hope you will enjoy this post as you did the ones before and in case you missed them follow this link the previous posts.
