I changed the lighting a little bit on these and also the post processing, Fredau took a bit more intense stance and viola…

it over already! what a ride, eh?!

but we are going out with a bang as they say. not only do I have some very sweet studio photos of the amazing 458 Italia, but also the Video we taped on one of the days that weekend.

Well when I say we, I mean my buddies from the “Two Dudes” and Holger, as I was only driving the car.

Lets start with the photos though.

After the studio shoot with the Nissan GTR, which was my first car studio shooting, I learned a lot and one of the must important things was that for the classic studio shot you need a large, clean, white surface without any texture so I thought I had planned ahead well with getting a 3,60m x 3,60m sail and frame beforehand for that. Well it unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Not enough for what you might probably as… what you want for those classic photos is a clean white reflection on the car, that emphasis the cars lines and form. So when the sail or soft box or whatever you use is to small you get a lot of unwanted reflections. I was for example fighting a lot with the aluminum frame of the sail this time.

We got it under control, but it certainly wasn’t the perfect solution yet. I found an amazing huge soft box made by Chimera just for this purpose, but it is about 10.000 dollars. So I need improvise for the next shoot, but if you know anyone at Chimera that could organize a testshoot or loaner with this beast I would be very very thankful.

A shorter post on a bit earlier time than usual, but we are off to the airport for our vacation now, so excuse that please.

this part I had so planned out in my head and never tested before.

I wanted a beautiful and elegant model in a moody scene with the car, but not the cheap car magazine bikini type thing. I am pretty sure I pulled that part off to the extend that is not a cheap bikini/car shoot… (thought don’t get me wrong, those can be done well also), but I ran into a few problems that evening. first of all I miscalculated the timing a bit and I was loosing light faster than I thought, than I could have used two assistants to shuffle around lights and so on.

I didn’t have those so I needed to improvise and then save the rest in editing, which is something I normally do not like too much, at least not the saving part.

I wanted to shoot with Iris for quite some time now and finally got the chance, so here is where I am even more disappointed that I didn’t get exactly the photos I wanted. Iris was a trooper in the cold weather she didn’t complain, posed wonderfully and I really need to shoot with her again, first because she is great and second a little for my ego to show that I can do better

I certainly don’t think the photos are a catastrophe, but not at the level I wanted them. lighting the model and the car properly with two lights only is a challenge and as I said, I really want to give it another go one day. For now enjoy these and let me know what you think about them!

then we have the second part of this experimental stage. here we shot the whole scene with only one light, several frames and my assistant moved around the strobe from frame to frame, afterwards in post I then merged them together. I am happier with these, but here also is room for improvement. not bad for a first try though. here also I am looking forward to what you think.

We are getting closer to the end and christmas is only a few days away. This set helps us through the cold times I hope with the wonderful sensuality and beauty.

Vrooom!

As I said int he previous post this was the very first time of shooting a moving car out of a moving car.

I could have used a rig and maybe will give it a try at some point too, but this choice seemed to be a bit more organic and also more versatile.

I was sitting in the back of my trusty Landy which has the great advantage that the back hatch is split half half, so I can open the upper halt only and still be sitting safe in my car without the fear of falling out.

It still wasn’t very comfortable, but hey it’s for the art, right?

This is something you definitely need some practice in, same as the panning in motorsports photography for example.

Enough words, let the pictures speak for themselves.

and I know these are all very similar photos and normally I wouldn’t post them all together, but this is the first time for these kind of shots and each has a bit different dynamic and detail.

I really never had the problem of not being able to sort shots out this badly, but I really think they are all worth it.

Still proud of them and the collaboration with Fredau was really a joy.

My goal for next year certainly is to shoot a lot more than this year. Somehow I feel I did not shoot a lot for myself this year, I might be wrong though

And another post about my adventures in film photography. film and not as I called it before analog. Robin actually pointed me to it. nothing analog about it.

Ah well.

So I made a little purchase since the last film post. A Lomo LC-A+ with an Instax back. and I have to admit the Instax back was the main reason for me to buy this cam. I first needed to find out how the Instax back worked though so we got a few of these…

Hey its… ying and yang or so.

I have shot a few more, but had no time to scan them yet, but its certainly a wonderful combination to have the Lomo look on an instant film print.

Then I started shooting the ISO 100 Film that came with the camera…. and forgot it was ISO 100. but hey, this is the fun about shooting film also. and I like the outcome of these.

Though I have to say, the focusing on the LC-A+ is something I need to get the feel for.

And here we have my lovely Hasslblad again. The first two shots of Letizia where shot by my buddy Luca, I think, so I posted them as we aren’t really sure.

I really am a messy scanner… and I love it.

Oh yeah, not only the Fredau Series is heating up!

The magnificent Ferrari 458 Italia is back. The four days with this beast bought me a lot. Photography wise and about my boundaries as a gear head… there are none!

Photography wise I learned a lot and I am so eager to get back on the road and shoot more cars. Its a hard competitive space with some very good car photographers out there.

Also the fact that a lot is done in CGI doesn’t help, as in CGI you can make a clean image so much easier. I am not a huge fan of photoshopping my photos to death, but this is

quite common with car photography. I still try to keep away from that and let photography shine first, but its just the way it is. Two of them where actually planned to be processed this way, two weren’t.

Another first on this weekend was me shooting a moving car out of a moving car. I am such a daredevil, I know. there is also the option of using a rig for that and I will have to think about that as it is a good alternative in some situations. Then you have to choose between renting a professional one or build one yourself… I mean Manfrotto has everything I need for something like this.

ah well, lets get to the good stuff, right?

oh and this one obviously is photoshopped too… but that was more of a fun one just for the sake of it.

As promised we are back and we are turning the heat up a little more. I mentioned what a pleasure it was to work with Fredau, but I have to say that it makes such huge difference if a model know what she is doing and knows how she looks. It sounds stupid or very obvious, but really is essential. especially if it is Portfolio work.

For the lighting I used an Octa coming straight from above the camera tilted a little downwards and one beauty-dish from below the camera tilted upwards. Which basically is a Clamshell lighting setup with a wonderful effect.

So now enjoy this set of photos and I’d love hearing your thoughts on these.

As I am working on my business to concentrate more on two things from now on and Portrait and Modelwork is one part, the second will be my automobile work. Cars (and maybe motorbikes) by themselves and motorsports.
You might have seen my motosport work in the past few month and my Nissan GTR shoot.

Just in case this isn’t clear, I am a Gearhead! I’ve always loved cars and most probably always will. I love driving them, I love talking about them and I love looking at them, so the natural thing for me as a photographer is to take a lot of pictures of them.

Funny thing though is, as much as I got a hang of the motorsports part of it, the shooting a car by itself is a totally different beast, but I’ll get to that in a bit.

So after I posted my Nissan GTR photos a friend of mine from the good old days, so to speak, hit me up on facebook telling me that if I ever wanted something more italian to shoot I should let him know. Obviously now very curious I had to dig deeper into that offer and as it turns out the local Ferrari and Maserati Dealership is theirs. Maranello Motors right here in Cologne. This was and still is an extremly generous offer and I am still stunned by it.
We started looking for a suitable date and as we were aproaching winter quite quickly I wanted it to be rather sooner than later. As planning started I had a lot of great ideas and two of those struck me as very important, as I missed doing this last time with the GTR. The first was that  we should most certainly shoot a video, even if just a short one and the second that I wanted to shoot the car while it is in motion. Two ideas that turn a lot of time to shoot a car into quite very little time to shoot a car over four days…

Did that stop us? well… no. was it a great idea? well… depends on the point of view. we for sure learnt a lot in these four days. and the most important thing I took away from this certainly was to not plan that much.

I know I know, but shooting cars is something I need to get into much more skill-wise or rather to get the specific photography “muscle memory” for, especially when working with artifical light stuff gets really weird. I have some experience with very large reflective surface objects as I had a job shooting professional kitchens in restaurant, hotels and so on, which are just metallic silver surfaces al over the place. In difference to the kitchens though cars have some very weird angles that make keeping unwanted reflections out even harder, but nothing’s better than a good challenge.

I’m getting carried away here, as this is more of a teaser post I will talk about the specific shoots, the problems and what happened overall  in each of the following blogposts. Hope you enjoy these “teaser” photos and stay tuned!!!

Every now and then you get very lucky. Right? Right?! Right!

So one day I get a Mail via my Model Mayhem Profile from Fredau. She was in town for a few shootings and one got cancelled so sent a few Mails around to fill that gap.

Luckily I could make some time and we had a really nice shooting day. Well half a day, but we got a ton of good photos out of it, that I will post in six parts here on the blog.

you might remember the first post of this series.

Since then some time has past and some arguing about the editing of the photos. with the model, but also two buddies of mine.

I am not huge fan of editing skin and so on, I feel that the human body is beautiful as it is with all the features we all have and don’t see why it needs to be edited.

On the other side I understand that in beauty and glamour images you do this and there is nothing wrong with it, but for this series I initially wanted to not do that.

The model was unhappy and as I said two buddies of mine also mentioned that I could have done some editing to the photos. I still don’t agree with them, but as

I also was not in the big mood for doing this I saw a great opportunity to finally work with my buddy Thomas Reimann as a retoucher. He has great photoshop skills.

So he did the retouching on these two photos and I am quite pleased with the outcome, the model likes it and Thomas is happy too. Good thing that he prepared

the photoshop files so that you could adjust all the adjustments afterwards, which makes it so much easier if you are working over a greater distance and where I

can then go in and do little adjustments myself.

M for Murder for me stands for a few things, it was triggered by my Leica M9 and Leicas history with this style of photography. Then there is the Hitchcock movie and its style and feel. One of my most favorite movies “M”, Fritz Langs masterpiece comes into mind for me… also the style and feel… the story about the city, the underworld… just feels right.

all my street related photography will go there from now on.

last but not least in my tumblr universe is my main tumblr blog STARPONY! this is mostly about titties and silliness. for sure not suited for work and not for everyone.

The there is my Flickr account! all, or most of my photos that go online I upload to flickr. I love Flickr and for me still the most important photo platform on the net.

I think it was at LeWeb 2009 where I met my friend Luca Sartoni for the first time, and it was the first time I was physically exposed to a medium format analog camera and fell in love with it, typical gadget geek…

There is something to looking through the “giant” from the top viewfinder that jet makes it special for me. Soon after LeWeb I ordered myself a Lubitel 166+ via the Lomography website and … didn’t really start shooting right away. First I had not too many rolls of film and wasn’t sure what shoot, I also don’t have a light meter and always needed to take my Nikon with me to meter what I was shooting. That of course slowed the whole process down. Then my buddy Madlen from Kodak  was so kind to support me with a great selection of films and all together I still only shot 6 rolls of film over one year. I messed up a few rolls as the Lubitel had some technical problems here and there too. Well well, guess thats how it is.

At the beginning of this year I finally made the step to get myself a Hasselblad 500c/m, which out of some reasons wanted to have since I got more into the subject. And since then I have shot quite a bit more, but always had the problem of getting the film developed… 35mm film is still quite easy to get developed around here, but medium format… not so much. And often its very expensive to get prints or even high quality scans. The last place I went to, messed up twice, big time and killed some rolls of film! So I finally got myself a new scanner yesterday, which can scan different types of film and started scanning a little selection of my negatives I had laying around.

I am actually quite happy about these and now I am really pumped about my analog photography. I think being spoiled by the digital age and the immediate availability of what you have created makes the entrance into analog photography harder for many. And of course this still takes some time to get the negatives, but I can now scan my stuff myself and that feels very good.

On top of that my Buddy Robin will hopefully very soon give me and Dominik a little crash course and help us building a little darkroom in my studio. I will keep you posted on that…

From the 21. of october to the 23. Manfrotto opened its Interactive Photo Lab in Berlin.

The idea was to present their new line of consumer products in a new way and to interact with them.

I was on board to shoot in one of our three different photo booths and to give a little keynote and shoot a little setup in front of the press. I also took some members of the press and some Manfrotto employees on a photo walk through Berlin. We planned the photo booths with Manfrotto after the layout of the main booth was done. Space was obviously limited as our main booth was in the middle of the Sony Center at the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, but at some point we got at least over 20 people into one of the photo booths at the same time. The main idea being to give the people the opportunity to get some nice photos and have some fun, while also being able to check out the cool new gear and get infos on them from Manfrotto staff.

It was a great success, a lot of fun and of course a lot of work, I spent 6 days in total in Berlin as I drove to Berlin and took quite a lot of gear, met a lot of fun people and I am sure we rocked it. And for all the pros and semipros out there… there is some very cool new gear out there for us too.

The new Snake Arm, which is a great addition to the Magic Arm and the Dado System. I will post more on these two soon!!!

The Photo walk was a lot of fun too, especially as I had planned the route, but mostly via google maps and just a little memory as I haven’t been to Berlin very often.

For a very long time now I was looking for another camera than my D3 and later the D3s. I love my D3s, it just works in every situation that I can think of, I love the photos it puts out, the way it feels in my hands. The Pro Nikkor glass is so amazing and sharp that if I don’t blow it, the outcome is just stunning. Obviously there is a but… The D3s is a huge, heavy beast and it can look intimidating to others. This combined with my appearance can make it quite difficult to be the fly on the wall. Especially for street photography it can be somewhat disturbing.

So as I said before, for a long time I was looking for a camera that could help me out with this problem, also for times when you can’t or just don’t want to carry around a few kilograms of camera. A while back I bought a Panasonic GF1 mainly for shooting video, and I had gotten myself a lens-adapter by Novoflex to use my Nikkor lenses with it. For shooting video this was amazing, so was it for photography, but I somehow always missed something when shooting photos with the GF1. Besides the missing optical viewfinder I sometimes realized my biggest problem was the small sensor. I know the micro four-thirds sensors are great for their size, but having the D3s with its full-frame sensor got me really spoiled. Not even the high ISO was what I missed from my D3s, though it really is something amazing to have. so it took me some time to realize that the big sensor was what I was looking for.

What choices do I have… not too many to be honest. There would be the line of new Sony NEX models. Where some models have an APC sensors. The Ricoh GXR, the „freaky“ cam with interchangeable lens/sensor combinations has two lenses that come with APC sized sensors. I even went towards the better Point and shoots but somehow just couldn’t get myself to do it. At some point I got my hands on the new Nikon D7000 and thought „hey, this might be what I was looking for“. It has a nice small body (please remember, always in comparison to my D3s), its light and pops out great photos and wonderful video, but… in the end it still was a DSLR though.
I know what you are thinking… why am I not mentioning the Leica M9 yet, well… more than one reason. For one its crazy crazy price tag, which I can understand to a certain degree, but still always kept me from even thinking about it. Secondly the majority of the Leica community always seemed very… well how to say this politely… snobbish?! Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to generalize, but my experience with Leica staff in the most different situations and Leica owners were mostly very strange and rather disturbing. So the entry into the Leica world was never something I was thinking about.

Then… Leica just introduced the M9-P, which basically just took away the red Leica dot and name tag on the front side of the camera. I somehow got hooked. I visited Steve Huffs page, which was introduced to me by my buddy iFranz, checked out the Leica Forums and Thorsten Overgaards page to read up on the camera as much as I could, just to realize that most of the M9s shortcomings were exactly what I was looking for. Especially with the low profile M9-P which with some added gaff-tape could look like a nice old Holga. (yip, I just mentioned gaff-tape).

Out of the blue my girlfried, which is the best girlfriend in the world by the way, decided to give me a huge push into the M9-P direction. you probably can imagine my „shock“. So the hunt began… which is another thing I didn’t know about Leica M Series products… they are quite hard to get. The M9-P we found quite quickly though as luck was on our side. The really complicated part was the lens I was looking for. the 50mm 1.4 ASPH Summilux. Six to 12 month delivery time across all european dealers I called. This is something I kinda understand, but still think is odd. 6-12 month?! Really?! We are talking about a Lens, not a car here. I understand Leica is kind of a small company and with a very new Product they might have a huge problem, but the 50mm 1.4 ASPH Summilux is out for some time now. And if you want to play with the big guys, you might need to step up your game a little. I wouldn’t have a huge problem with this, if we were talking about a Panasonic GF-something, but the M9 tries to cater quite a bit to the pro photographer. By that I would expect a good availability for their products, as if anything went wrong with my equipment or it was stolen before an important shoot, I could for sure get a replacement from somewhere close by in a proper timeframe. Sure, this is an extreme scenario, but very well possible and not a really nice outlook. But maybe Leica will start working on that at some point.

My luck was that I called Leica HQ in Solms and bothered their Shopmanager their for a few days until he „organized“ me the Lens I wanted. To my surprise, when I picking it up a week later, the people at Leica HQ still had the same attitude problem as all the other Leica people I had to deal with until then. Right next to me was a Dad and his son which were very warmly greeted, coffee was offered. I just got a cold rude look and a short question what I want… a real shame somehow. And this has been my experience with Leica Personnel all the time. At Photokina or where-ever. Nonetheless… after clearing up why I was there, the shop manager got very friendly and nice.
So lets get to the more important part here… my photo comparison, basically taking the same photos with the D3s and Nikkor 50mm 1.4 versus the M9-P and the 50mm 1.4 Summilux. Indoor, Outdoor, Studiolighting and Streetphotography. I also added some shots taken with my D3s and the 85mm 1.4 lens as it is much closer quality wise to the Summilux. As I said before, this is not scientific at all, just my subjective feeling and perception of the results, plus the handling in the different situations. Let’s see how it goes.

Contestant number one, the Nikon D3S!

- 12 Megapixels.

- 35mm equivalent Fullframe (FX) Sensor.

- Saves files in Nikon proprietary NEF RAW format.

- Shoots 9 Frames a second in Fullframe mode.

- ISO range from 100 (LO1) to 102400 (HI3). Lowest standart ISO is 200 and highest standart ISO is 12800.

- 920.000 Pixels Display.

Contestant number two, the Leica M9-P!

- 18 Megapixels.

- 35mm equivalent Fullframe Sensor.

- Saves files in Adobes DNG RAW format.

- Shoots 2 Frames a second.

- ISO range from 160 (or 80 pulled) to 2500.

- 230.000 Pixel Display.

I know there are much more facts, but these seem to be the most important to me for now.

3, 2, 1 … FIGHT!

Take your own conclusion out of this… but let me say a few things as I feel quite strongly about all this. A camera in this price range should not have a display as bad as this like the Leica does. I really don’t understand it. A Nikon D90 Display is much better you get that for much less with a kit lens. Its basically as crappy as my 8 year old Casio Exilims display…  and please please please have a look at the presentation of the x100 special edition, a WOODEN box, what do you get with the M9-P? a regular stupid carton box.

I also would trade Megapixels for better high ISO performance. 18 Megapixels is nice, but not necessary in a camera like this. Bring it down to 12 Megapixel and get a better ISO out of the Sensor. This would catapult the M9P quite a bit forward.And one thing I am still not good at as it is a bit complicated is focussing in very dark situations where you don’t have anything bright to focus at… I would be very thankful for any tips on that side.

But so far I even shot fast moving cars at a race with the M9-P without any problems really.

As my buddy Tom was visiting Cologne last week, we did another little video test. Tom is not only a photographer and photoshop specialist, but also started to get his fingers dirty in the video field.  Poor Thorsten had to be in front of the camera again and again did a terrific job as you will see.

The main camera is Toms 5D Mark II and we used my Nikon D7000 as the second, “closeup”, camera. We used two litepanels 1x1s for key and fill and a litepanels micro pro to lighten up the background a tad.

A new idea formed in my head a few weeks ago and sat there… until I decided it was time to go and shoot it. as I looked for models I found one or two immediately that I felt would be right for this new series of photos I started to shoot now. From the two models I wrote to, one was Nicole. After finding couple of time slots to shoot we finally managed to meet up the week before last and shoot. It was our first meeting and shooting, but it went very well for that.

I always like to know my models before you work with them as relationship built on trust really makes it so much easier, but if you don’t have the luxury it helps to concentrate not only on the work as you would normally do, also bring trust and a good positive feeling over to actually everyone you are working with. There are times where it can get a bit stress here and there on shoots and its good if by then the trust is built so no one has a bad feeling about the shooting. I digress, we hit it off very well and got into a focussed working mode quite quickly and actually were finished much sooner that I had planned.

Nicole was a joy to work with and I think it shows. as for the setup on these photos and actually the two following posts, we only used one light source. Outdoor very close up with an octabank and indoors further away with a reflector and bare bulb.

The outdoor ones are obviously a bit more color corrected where as the indoor photos where just corrected slightly. The post processing in general was very slight and quickly made in lightroom, not really retouched anything besides a spot in two shot an a stray hair.

this set of photos below are two of the main shots. the one above is “only” an additional shot. of the main shots for this series I will post two other variants later this week, as they turned out very well too and after that you will see all the additional and left over shots. I hope you will enjoy looking at these.

Today was the day for the Worldwide Photowalk I organized for the Cologne area.

As you probably know Scott Kelby started this tradition a few years back and this year I thought I’ll organize it for my hometown of Cologne.

As a route I chose something different than what you were used normally from photo walks in Cologne, but I think the walkers weren’t disappointed with m choice. 35 in total were listed and I think we were missing about 5-8 people, guessing from the top of my head.

I met a lot of nice people I didn’t know before and quite a few old friends joined in too. The weather was just wonderful and I had a lot of fun. We lost a few walkers over time unfortunately, but I hope everyone had as much fun as me.

A little test we shot yesterday evening which developed in about two hours or a bit less.

Watch it first and then read on if you want.

The setup was quite easy… the knocking part was shot on the side and Thorsten just knocked on a table and its lit with one litepanel. As we get to the part were I am sitting at the table we table we had one litepanel high up on a c-stand facing down on camera right. more of a rim light. and another litepanel on my left side through a trig rip diffusor to bring a little detail to my face. and for the third part we basically clam shelled Thorsten and then me with the two litepanels. though the one on the left was i  front of him and the one on the right behind him functioning as a rim light again.

All was shot with my Nikon D3s and a Nikkor 85mm 1.4 lens at I think f5.6 and ISO 200. All on a big Manfrotto Monopod and I think it worked great. And all was edited in Final Cut Pro X.

Its been over two weeks not that this event took place and on the one hand I was very busy these days and on the other had really a hard time making the selection of my close to 6000 photos I took. I know I know… but it was a three day event, of which I was there for two and a half.

Anyways, in this blog post I will also just post a selection of my selection, but if you click any of the photos you will get to my flickr account where you can check out the whole set I uploaded (146 photos).

So I hope you’ll enjoy these as I think that this event is as good if not better car wise than the Oldtimer Grand Prix a few weeks back I posted about, which also is better known. This time I found the collection of cars and motorcycles to be somewhat more… intriguing. I might be wrong, either way the amount of amazing cars down in the hotel garage was actually quite astonishing. I hope to find an editor, blog or magazine for my next round of photos or the next event, that would really be something!
