Indeed, there are cases where offenders forced onto such registers for having consensual sex as teenagers have been murdered by vigilantes, to say nothing of the brutal treatment inevitably received at the “correctional” facilities more often responsible for instilling deviancy and recidivism in their inmates.

It seems America’s prison industry, already the most extensive in history, will be well supplied with new inmates as the budding sexuality of the nation’s youth is criminalised and any suggestion of underage sexuality results in imprisonment and eternal sex offender status…

A Buddhist monk who collapsed whilst having sex with a dog living at his monastery is faced with making some difficult explanations.

The 65-year-old monk lived at a monastery in Thailand, having become a monk to escape a chequered past. Also living at the monastery was a 3-4-year-old female dog, who was with pup.

Even a dog’s feminine wiles apparently proved too much for the cloistered monk, and he took the animal as a companion, sundering his vows of chastity.

However, during an encounter with the animal in a nearby forest, the excitement seems to have got the better of him, and he collapsed, later being found unconscious with the dog still tied to a nearby tree.

Police subsequently confirmed his involvement thanks to traces of his semen found on the dog’s genitals, as well as on his clothes. According to witnesses he also took washing-up liquid from the monastery kitchens to use as a makeshift lubricant, indicating a certain amount of preparation.

It is not clear whether he faces criminal charges, or what the abbot intends to do about the matter.

A conversation with a friend who works for a call center that handles an Xbox 360 account has yielded a disturbing truth: Microsoft has started its annual Xbox Live banning spree and it has disabled 600,000 accounts so far in the US and Canada.

The target of the banning spree are mainly people who have modified their consoles to play pirated games. My trusty source says that they have been given instructions to push for a million banned accounts by the time the holidays are over.

Leaving aside the question of the reliability of this “trusty source,” it is obvious Microsoft has banned a very large number of Xboxes, and an even larger number of Xbox Live accounts.

Such is the ire of these unhappy pirates that the man in charge of Xbox Live has been subjected to the usual deluge of Internet harassment, with him reporting death threats against himself, his family and even his dogs, along with threatening calls throughout the night.

The threats relented after he mentioned they were being reported to police – with the bans evidently proving quite effective, it seems the Xbox 360’s noisy pirate community is proving quite the pushover so far.

The suggestions themselves are thought to be based on Google’s database of search terms frequently occurring together (although Google is known to censor these quite heavily to remove anything it considers unseemly). Enterprising 2channelers soon found some interesting results by inputting “husband” and “wife.”

The latest marketing ruse used by Chinese luxury car hawkers is a “car companion,” a naked lady provided for the purposes of attracting customers, or at least fascinated onlookers and opportunistic photographers.

Haruhi’s remaining deluded minions have reacted with surprise and some delight at the news that the upcoming “Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya” movie adaptation will clock in at 150 minutes, far longer than anyone anticipated.

At two and a half hours the movie appears to be the rough equivalent of 8 episodes (perhaps an unfortunate choice of number), presumably more than long enough to cover the events of the novel – indeed, there is already some speculation that the novel may not have enough material to sustain the film fully, suggesting additional material or novels will be involved.

It remains to be seen just whether this turns out to be an epic finale to the TV series, or an excessively drawn out death rattle as the franchise finally expires…

Microsoft’s recent mass banning of users of modded consoles from Xbox Live apparently did not go far enough – banned users are now learning that they can no longer use their console’s HDD for any meaningful purpose, with installation to the drive no longer possible on a blacklisted console…

An abridged description of the changes:

Firstly, and most obviously, you cannot connect to Xbox Live on this console any more. This means no more game updates (aka title updates), XBLA games, marketplace content, netflix/sky player and so on. There is no way around this, all online capabilities are now disabled PERMANENTLY.

Hard Drive installs are now disabled on the banned console. This means any disk-based games you have will no longer play off of the hard drive.

There is no way to fix this, that functionality is simply gone from the banned 360.

Windows Media Centre functionality is disabled. It is still possible to stream video/music content via the video library.

So, in summary:

* Cannot go on Xbox Live

* Cannot install games to the HDD

* Cannot use Windows Media Centre extender

* Cannot be used to get achievements from backups without corrupting your profile

An exhibitionist couple who invited the general public to watch them have sex in the back of a van have been arrested after bystanders reported a suspicious crowd clustered around their vehicle.

The Fukuoka area couple, a 44-year-old unemployed man and a 33-year-old female chef, invited spectators by way of a local BBS to come and watch them have sex in public.

True to their word, they began having sex in the back of a minivan one evening whilst parked in a public car park. They are said to have successfully summoned ten male spectators.

However, a man passing by, apparently unaware of the spectacle’s particulars, became worried and called police, warning that “people are crowded round a car, I think there might be trouble.”

Police soon arrived and caught the pair in flagrante delicto, and they admitted their antics at the scene. Both were arrested and charged with public indecency.

A survey of Korean women in their 20s and 30s found 98% of those asked would have plastic surgery, money permitting, with only 2% objecting to the notion.

The same survey undertaken in 2003 found that 66% would undergo such surgery given a chance, whilst 21% objected to the notion and an additional 13% agreed more with the sentiment that “it’s what’s inside that counts.”

There are no official statistics available on the actual prevalence of cosmetic surgery in Korean society (although Korean women are widely thought to be the most surgically enhanced in the world), but an informal survey of 1,800 Seoul women by a Korean paper found 46% of those they asked admitted to having had facial cosmetic surgery.

Just what the real number is can only be guessed at – many are less likely to admit to such surgery in a face-to-face survey as used here, though equally it seems likely Seoul would have a more fashion-conscious populace, and of course this figure only includes facial operations. Whatever the case, it is certainly a large proportion.

Tamiki Wakaki, a top Shonen Sunday mangaka, has voiced his concerns that the Japanese manga industry is in long-term decline, and that authors not writing in the four staple genres of ero, parody, bishonen, and bishoujo can no longer expect to support themselves commercially.

The mangaka himself, 若木民喜 / Tamiki Wakaki, active for a decade and widely published in Shonen Sunday, is best known for his popular “Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai,” unsurprisingly a romantic comedy serialised in Shonen Sunday.

He is pessimistic about the manga industry he sees as being in long-term decline, with the future of the industry in doubt over the coming decades thanks to a limited influx of new talent:

“Manga magazines are boring, so they attract no fresh blood. Competition subsequently slackens. New artists are tried vigorously, but none are able to be serialised for long.

As a result experienced authors are called in out of necessity, but though their books may sell the magazines themselves become dull – this attracts even less new blood, and so the cycle continues.

In the past new artists were a dime a dozen, but now no matter how hard you search they are scarcer and must be nurtured carefully. Especially now in the era of lower birth rates, nobody can fail to notice this, the new artists are gradually decreasing in number. Both the mangaka who can sell a million copies and their fanbases are aging…

It’s going to be especially difficult to make a living for the kind of authors who can’t pen ero/parody/bishonen/bishoujo manga (in fact it is right now).”

It seems the four genres featured now cover the bulk of recent titles, not that they were lacking in popularity to begin with.

However, Mahoromatic creator Bow Ditama does hold out some hope for those poor wretches uninterested in endlessly drawing pantsu manga:

“Certainly, if you can’t draw cute girls it is going to be hard. But no mangaka are dying of starvation. Even if you can’t draw girls, you can still earn a living on subculture magazines and ‘deep’ manga magazines, and you can also work as an assistant to a pro.

It seems online assistants or whatever are quite in demand too [these are assistants who work remotely and submit manuscripts to their master electronically, rather than being physically present in the traditional manner].”

Their voices join the many others who have begun voicing their doubts as to the direction the Japanese visual culture industry is taking, with both anime and manga shying away from risky projects in favour of courting niche audiences or publishing staid works in highly rigid genres.
