কৃষ্ণ চূড়া আমাদের একটা ফুল আগে থেকেই আছে, সেই সাথে আছে রাধা চূড়া ফুলও... কিন্তু দুইটা ফুল দেখতে হুবহু একই রকম হওয়াতে আমরা খুব সহজেই একে আলাদা করতে পারিনা... কিন্তু সামান্য লক্ষ্য করলেই কিন্তু এদেরকে সনাক্ত করা খুব সহজ হয়... রাধাচূড়া ফুলের গাছ ছোট আকারের হয়, আর রং হয় হলুদ, লাল... অনেক সময় একই গাছে লাল হলুদ দুই রঙের ফুলই দেখা যায়... অন্য দিকে কৃষ্ণচূড়া ফুলের গাছ অনেক বড় আকারের হয়... ফুলের রংটাও হয় টকটকে লাল, আর এক সাথে সমস্ত গাছে অনেক ফুল আসে... রাধাচূড়া গাছে ফুল আসে অনেক কম(হাতে গোনা যাবে এমন)...

This flower is almost similar to the Krishna Chura Ful(কৃষ্ণচূড়া ফুল). The main difference of this flower with Krishnachura is, its basically a shrubby type of plant and the flowers are having either yellow or red, or both at the same tree. Botanical name of this flowering plant is Caesalpinia pulcherrima from the plant family Caesalpiniaceae (Gulmohar family).

This ornamental flowering plant is having several common names, such as peacock flower, Pride of Barbados, Dwarf poinciana, etc. In our country Bangladesh, we call this as RadhaChura Ful(রাধাচূড়া ফুল). This plant is native to Madagascar. Its a shrubby type of plant and can grow upto three meter in height. Leafs are bipinnate and small. Flowers are in cluster and the color is yellow and red. You can see the both color at the same tree often. Flowers are having noticeably long stamens.

This is an ornamental flowering plant and widely seen at the roadside and parks for beautification. While going from Gulshan to Banani, you'll find lot of this plant beside the road(just before the bridge). Photos of this article were taken from Banani/Gulshan at May 2012.

Neel Nishinda(নীল নিশিন্দা) - Vitex trifolia

আমাদের বাংলায় নিশিন্দা নামে একটা ঔষধি গাছ আছে... কিন্তু আজকের গাছটার নাম নীল নিশিন্দা, যেইটাকে অনেকে আবার সাগর নিশিন্দাও বলে থাকে... এর কারণ হলো সমুদ্রের পার্শবর্তী এলাকাতে এই গাছের বিচরণ অহরহ দেখা যায়... গাছটা সম্পর্কে আমার খুব বেশি জানাশুনা নাই... সেন্ট মার্টিন বেড়াতে যাবার সময় প্রথম দেখলাম... কারো কাছে যদি তথ্য থেকে থাকে, শেয়ার করুন... বিশেষ করে ঔষধি গুনের কথা যদি কেউ জেনে থাকেন...!

I have never seen this plant before. First time saw it at the St Martin's Island of Bangladesh. The whole island is blessed with this medicinal plant. This use to grow around the coastal area. This is the reason to call it as Coastal Vitex, in Bangladesh which is Sagar Nishinda(সাগর নিশিন্দা). Sagar means Sea in Bengali. This is native to East Africa, but interestingly, widely available at our Coastal territory.

Botanical name of this plant is Vitex trifolia. It belongs to the plant family Lamiaceae. Common names of this wild flower are Arabian Lilac, Coastal Vitex, Chaste Tree, etc. In Bangladesh, it is known as Neel Nishinda(নীল নিশিন্দা), Sagar Nishinda(সাগর নিশিন্দা), etc.

Flower blooms as cluster and the color is violet(sometimes purple). It has two lipped petals(corollas) and two pair of stamens. Flower has slightly hairy stuffs at the upper side. Leafs are normally tri-foliate, but simple leafs are seen at the same plant. Upper face of the leaf is bright green where the other side is dull/grayish green. I have seen this plant is having lush green leafs, but expert says this plant is deciduous.

This is normally a small sized shrubby plant, but can be seem more than two meters in height sometimes. This plant grows well in dry and sandy condition. Roots are capable of holding the sands easily around it. For it's sand binding ability, this is considered as sand-establishing species. This plant has several medicinal uses, but right now I can not remember those.

Lobster claw - Heliconia rostrata

Flower name is Heliconia, and is the most common flower from the plant family Heliconiaceae (heliconia family). This is mainly native to South America, more specifically to Peru and Ecuador. It has several names, such as Hanging Lobster, Lobster Claw, Bird of Paradise(some people says False Bird of Paradise), etc. Botanical name of this beautiful flower is Heliconia rostrata. Heliconia doesn't have any suitable name in our mother tongue Bangla.

Heliconia plant grows around 6-8 ft tall. Leafs are almost similar to the Banana leafs. Flowers are downwards pendent inflorescence with red/yellowish bracts. Each flower is full with plenty of water and nectar for the birds and insects. The shape of the flower reassembles the claw of lobster. Also it looks like the beaked of the parrot. Thats why this flower is having those names.

The hard shelled bracts of this flower is giving it a long term durability which just allow it to hang on the tree for a longer period of time without changing color or faded away. Though its a foreign ornamental flowering plant, but now a days this is seen at the parks, front yard, road side often.

Flowers have plenty of nectar for insects and birds.

Oporajita Ful(অপরাজিতা ফুল) - Clitoria ternatea

Oporajita is a strikingly attractive deep blue colored flower from the Fabaceae (pea family). Its common names are Butterfly Pea, Blue Pea, etc. Botanical/scientific name is Clitoria ternatea. This plant is native to tropical part of Asia, but widely available at other regions. In our country, we call this as Oporajita Ful(অপরাজিতা ফুল).

We use this plant as an ornamental for its beautiful flower. Though most of the time blue one is seen, but the white colored flowers are available too. Plant is twining climbing vine. We use this at the gates, fences, walls, etc for decorating purpose. This is a perennial herbaceous vine having elliptical leafs.

The nomenclature of this flower is related with the human anatomy. Roughly the flower reassembles the upper part of female gentile. That's why the botanists picked the genus as Clitoria.

Madhu Maloti(মধু মালতী) - Quisqualis indica

এই ফুলের অনেক নাম, মধুমালতী, মাধুরী লতা, মধু মঞ্জুরী, প্রভৃতি... একই ফুলের আবার রংও হয় অনেক... লাল, সাদা, হালকা গোলাপী... ফুলের সামনের দিকটা লালচে হয় আর ওপর পাশের, মানে পেছনের দিকটা হয় সাদাটে মতন... লতানো এই ফুলের গাছকে আমরা বাড়ীর সামনের দরজায় সৌন্দর্য বাড়ানোর জন্য লাগিয়ে থাকি... থোকায় থোকায় ফুল হয়, আর একটু মিষ্টি গন্ধ থাকে সাথে... প্রায় সারা বছরই এই গাছে ফুল হয়...

Botanical name of this flower is Quisqualis indica. It pertains to the plant family Combretaceae. There are several local names available for this flower at our country Bangladesh, such as Madhuri Lota(মাধুরী লতা), Modhu Monjori(মধু মঞ্জুরী), Modhu Maloti(মধু মালতী), etc. English name is Rangoon Creeper. This flowering plant is native to India.

Madhuri Lota(মাধুরী লতা) is a vine like twining climber ornamental flowering plant. We use to plant this near the gate to decorate it. Leafs are elliptical and other side is rough and having texture on it. The plant can grow very fast without any proper care. Apart from the gate, we also use this plant at fence.

The same plant brings three different color of flowers starting from red to rosy and white. Front face of the flower is reddish/pinkish and the other side is slightly faded color. Flower comes as a cluster and use to hang downwards from the vine. The tubular flowers are having a long shaft/base that holds the flower from the vine. It has a sweet fragrance.

Basically we use Madhu Maloti(মধু মালতী) as an ornamental flowering plant. But it has several medicinal uses like other plants in nature.

Swarna Lota Ful(স্বর্ণ লতা ফুল) - Cuscuta reflexa

এই প্রথম আমি আমার ব্লগে পরজীবী কোনো গাছের ফুল নিয়ে লিখছি... আজকের ফুলের নাম স্বর্ণ লতার ফুল... এইটার অনেক নাম আছে, যেমন আলোক লতা, স্বর্ণলতিকা, আকাশ বল্লী, প্রভৃতি... পরগাছা এই গাছ অন্য গাছকে পেঁচিয়ে বেড়ে উঠে... মজার ব্যাপার হলো, এই গাছের কোনো মূল বা কান্ড নাই... শুধু মাত্র লতা, যা অন্য গাছ কে পেছিয়ে থাকে, আর সেই আশ্রয় দাতা গাছ থেকে রস শুষে নিয়ে বৃদ্ধি পেতে থাকে... চিকন চিকন এই লতার রং হলুদ হয়... এর জন্যই নাম স্বর্ণলতা... অপ্রয়োজনীয় একটা গাছ, আবার যেই গাছ একে আশ্রয় দেয় সেই গাছকেও মেরে ফেলে অনেক সময়... তার পরও আমার কাছে এইটা দেখতে অনেক সুন্দর লাগে... সবাই আমরা এর লতাই দেখেছি, ফুল খুব কমই দেখার সৌভাগ্য হয়... আজকে এখানে কিছু ফুলের ছবি দিয়ে দিলাম...

আলোক লতা নিয়ে একটা গানের মধ্যে বাউল আধ্যাতিক কথা বলেছেন, আমি গানের সেই লাইনটা তুলে দিলাম নীচে... দেখি কেউ বলতে পারে কিনা এই গানের প্রথম লাইন কি ছিল... :-)

This is an interesting parasitic plant named as Dodder in English. In our country Bangladesh, we call this as Swarna Lota(স্বর্ণলতা), Alok Lota(আলোক লতা), Swarna lotika(স্বর্ণলতিকা), etc. Botanical name of this plant is Cuscuta reflexa. It belongs to the plant family Convolvulaceae (Morning glory family). I have only seen the yellow/golden Dodder in my life. But other part of the world having this in different colors. In Hindi, this is called as Amar bel (meaning, immortal vine). Another interesting name is Devil's hair as it cover the whole part of the host plant slowly.

Dodder is a leafless twined sprawling vine like parasitic plant. Usually it grows over a host plant, and use to suck life from the host. This plant doesn't have any stems or roots. Only the thin vines. It produces lot of branches which can easily cover the host very short period of time. This is a noxious weed, and should be eradicated before it spawn in a large scale.

The flowers are small and having a bell shape. Very small flower of the Dodder plants are white in color having yellow filaments. It produces fruits and seeds from the flower. But my question is, as it does not have any roots or stems, then what are the uses of the seeds? Can I grow this plant from the seeds? Though I know this plant use to propagate easily from the vine easily.

Dalim Ful(ডালিম ফুল) - Punica granatum

আজকের ফুল ডালিম. সাধারণত ফলের জন্যই এই ডালিম বিখ্যাত. ফুল হয় উজ্জল কমলা থেকে টকটকে লাল রং পর্যন্ত. ছোট বেলায় কবিতায় পড়েছি ডালিম নিয়ে. যদিও কবি বলেছিল ডালিম গাছে মৌ, কিন্তু এত ছোট গাছে মৌমাছি কিভাবে চাক বাধবে সেইটা এখনো চিন্তার বিষয়. ডালিমের ভেতরে দেখতে মৌমাছির চাকের মতন সাজানো. হয়তো এইটা দেখেই কবি মৌচাকের সাথে ডালিমকে মিশিয়ে ছোটদের জন্য কবিতাটি লিখেছিল...

Its a bright orange to red colored flower. Name of the plant is Pomegranate. In our country Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ), we call this Dalim(ডালিম). Botanical name of the plant is Punica granatum from the plant family Lythraceae(some people says Punicaceae (pomegranate Family)). This is famous for its delicious fruit instead of the flower. Even you'll find millions of people who love this fruit, but never knows the color of the flower yet. This tasty fruit is native to Iran, Iraq(later dispersed throughout the world, and widely found at our sub continental territory).

Plant is a small(sometime semi medium) sized, and never seen to grow large. It shows multiple stems often. Leafs of this plant are slim and thin with a lovely glossy foliage. Young leafs are coffee colored instead of green. Fruits are round shape and having lot of nicely arranged small crunchy seeds covered with juicy pulps. Color of those pulps are somewhere magenta and transparent.

Tamrachura(তাম্র চূড়া ফুল) - Blumea lacera

Its a very fast growing herbaceous weed plant that grows all around the Bangladesh. Botanical name of the weed plant is Blumea lacera. It is native to Indian territory, so didn't find any suitable English name of the plant. It belongs to the plant family Asteraceae(Sunflower family).

Plant is an annual herb and grows up to several centimeters long. Stem of this plant is hairy, so does the leaf. The whole plant is having a pungent smell, specially when squeezed(leafs are thick, and produces a handful of juices if you do).

Flowers are bright yellow in color. After blooming several days prominently, the yellow spike like portion of the flower just turns into grey/white in color which just give the flower a ball shape(kind of an old man having white hairs at head). To me, this state of this flower seems more attractive than initial one. This is similar to the thistle flower. But I am not sure whether these hairy things can fly like thistle or not.

This weed plant is unwanted. But still it deserves a good name. So far I have found, its local names are Kukurmuta(কুকুর মুতা), Kukursunga(কুকুর শুঙ্গ), Jangli Muli(জংলি মুলী), etc. I am not sure why people gave such weird names!! It doesn't not have any relation with dog(so far I know). Does the sharp odor can be the reason for such nomenclature? It has a nice name in Hindi which is Tamrachura(তাম্র চূড়া ফুল).

Both the leaf and the root of this plant are having medical uses such as for fever, soothing burning, disease of mouth, and plenty of more.

Tamropuspi Basok(তাম্রপুষ্পি বাসক): Phlogacanthus pubinervius

আজকের ফুলটার নাম একটু বিদঘুটেই... কিছুদিন আগে(২৮ মার্চ ২০১২) প্রথম আলোতে শেষের পাতায় দেখলাম এক ভদ্রলোক এই ফুল নিয়ে দুই চারটি কথা লিখেছেন... চীন দেশের এই ফুল আমি দেখেছিলাম সুনামগঞ্জ ভ্রমন করার সময়... জাদুকাটা নদীর পাশে হালকা কমলা রঙের(অথবা ময়লা লাল) এই ফুলের কিছু গাছ ছিল... এমনিতেই শীতের রুক্ষতার জন্য প্রকৃতিতে একটা মরা ভাব ছিল, তার উপরে এই ফুলের রং বেশি একটা উজ্জল না হওয়াতে চোখেই পড়েনাই আমার অনেক ভ্রমন সঙ্গীর... ভুটান, চীন ও ভারতের আসাম জুড়ে এই ফুলের বিস্তার... সেই হিসাবে আমাদের দেশের মেঘালয়ের নিচের অংশতে(সিলেটের দিকে) এই ফুলের দেখা পাওয়া যায় বলেই আমার যুক্তি... আমাদের বাংলাতে এই ফুলের নাম তাম্রপুষ্পি বাসক, রাম বাসক, প্রভৃতি...

Common name of the flower is Nongmankha(Nong-Mang-Kha). This is mainly native to China, but widely found at Assam of India, and Bhutan. Botanical name of the flower is Phlogacanthus thyrsiformis(some prudent says Phlogacanthus pubinervius). This flower belongs to the plant family Acanthaceae(Ruellia family). It has several local name at Bangladesh, such as Chuwa ful(চুয়া ফুল), Ram Bashok(রাম বাসক), Baghatita(বাঘা তিতা), Tamrapuspi Bashok(তাম্রপুষ্পি বাসক), etc.

Nongmangkha(নংমাংখা ফুল) is a gregarious shrubby plant and the color of the flower is orange, faded red(brick red), etc. Height is around 2-3 meter. Leafs are slightly larger compare to the plant structure and shaped in ovate. Flowers are tubular and having two black filaments.

This flower has tremendous uses at herbal medicine. Flowers of this plant are an excellent antidote of pox, and few skin diseases. Also this plant is useful against cough, cold, asthma and many more similar diseases.

Batabi Lebu Ful(বাতাবী লেবু ফুল) - Citrus maxima

বাতাবী লেবু লাউ

কবি নজরুলের এই কবিতার বাতাবি লেবু ফুল নিয়ে আজকের লেখা. বসন্তের শুরুতে এই গাছে যখন সাদা সাদা অজস্র ফুল ফোটে তখন অনেক সুন্দর দেখায়. ফুল আর কচি পাতা দুইটাই এক সাথে আসে এই গাছে. মিষ্টি গন্ধে ভরা ৪/৫ পাপড়ি বিশিষ্ট এই ফুল থোকায় থোকায় হয়. ফুলের মতন জাম্বুরা ফলটাও বেশ, যদি সেইটা আবার হয় গরমের সময় দুপুরের রোদ্রে বসে লবন আর কাচা মরিচ দিয়ে ভর্তা করে খাওয়া.

Another fruit flower. This time it is Jambura Ful(জাম্বুরা ফুল). Common name of this is Pummelo, Pomelo, etc. In Bangladesh we call this Jamnura(জাম্বুরা), Batabi Lebu(বাতাবি লেবু), etc. Scientific name of this plant is Citrus maxima(synonym is Citrus grandis). It belongs to the plant family Rutaceae. This is native to South and Southeast Asia.

Jambura(জাম্বুরা) is a small size evergreen irregular branched tree plant. Leafs are glossy and ovate shaped. Leaf has two sections, upper section and lower section. Lower section is smaller than the upper section. A tree can grow upto 50 ft in height.

Batabi Lebu Ful(বাতাবী লেবু ফুল) is white in color having four/five petals. The stamen is white but having green gland. Flower has lot of yellow filaments around the stamen. It has a lovely fragrance.

Fruits of this plant is round shaped having thick outer skin. After pealing the outer skin very carefully, the juicy pulps are available to eat. This is the largest fruit from this citrus genus. Largest fruit is measured having 12 inches diameter.

Sunamganj: Limestone Lake of Tekerghat(টেকেরঘাট চুনাপাথরের লেক)

It was our first day at Tahirpur(তাহিরপুর). After arranging the accommodation, it was almost near to 11:00 at morning. So we have decided not to visit the Tanguar Haor(টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওর) today. There is a place near the Indian border named Tekerghat(টেকেরঘাট). Once upon a time there was a limestone quarry available. Now that one is not functioning.

As we have several hours left from the day, we have decided to visit the Tekerghat limestone lake(টেকেরঘাট চুনাপাথরের লেক) and the quarry. According to the bullshit newspaper and other so called reliable sources, the Tekerghat Limestone Lake(টেকেরঘাট চুনাপাথরের লেক) is 3 kilometers from the Tahirpur town(তাহিরপুর). But trust me, it is minimum 18 kilometers north from the town.

As we knew the road is only three kilometer of walking, all of us were started walking. But unfortunately the road seemed having no end to us. Although it was winter, the weather was extremely hot. We were walking and walking, but the destination was still too far.

Dusty road, far sight is Indian hills.

Whenever we have asked to the people about the destination, everyone were replied only three miles ahead. But that three miles were never finished. The road was too much dusty. Few of us became tired and exhausted by continuum walking.

Though the walking was tedious, but the surrounding scenario was picturesque. Once it is mile after mile paddy fields, then other time it is shallow river. Sometimes it is muddy swamp area, sometimes the houses of local people. It is a different kind of experience. I always love to see such kind of things.

Possibly it was more than three hours we have walked to reach at the Tekerghat. Amid of our journey, we have made a light lunch using singara and puri(সিঙ্গারা, পুরি) from a local bazaar. There is a limestone lake available at the Tekerghat. Initially we were interested to have a swim at the water. But it was too late, so we have declined our desire that we have cherished throughout the path.

The water of the lake is clear. We have expected the water of the lake would be blue. But still the water wasn't bad. This lake was created by quarrying the limestone. Exactly other side of the lake is India. People from India were having their bath at that side. Hill of that side having large boulders of limestone, but all belongs to India.

There are few small Tila(টিলা) available at Bangladesh side, possibly 20 ft height and artificial. You can pass few minutes on those if you like.

After exploring the Chunapathor(চুনাপাথর) Lake of Tekerghat, we have moved to Barikka Tila. After exploring that one we have returned to the Tahirpur town and that was almost at the end of the day.

How to Go:

Using a bike for 200 taka you can easily come to Tekerghat(টেকেরঘাট). Two person can ride after the driver on a bike. It will be around 40 minutes to reach at Tekerghat(টেকেরঘাট). GPS of Tekerghat(টেকেরঘাট) is (25°11'45.90"N, 91°10'27.69"E).

At the end of the day, our experience was worthy. Though we were tired, but it was something for us. We have learned lot of things, observed a different type of life style from local people, and many more things.

Kamranga Ful(কামরাঙ্গা ফুল) - Averrhoa carambola

কামরাঙ্গা একটা ফলের নাম. কিন্তু এই ফলের ফুলটাও দেখতে অনেক সুন্দর. হালকা গোলাপী রঙের থোকা থোকা ছোট ছোট এই ফুল দেখতে খুবই চমত্কার. একটা সময় এইটা ফলের গাছ হিসাবে লাগানো হলেও এখন অনেক বাড়িতে এইটাকে সৌন্দর্যের জন্যও লাগানো হয়ে থাকে. কারণ এর আকর্ষনীয় ফুল আর চকচকে রঙিন কচি পাতা. একটা জিনিস আমার মাথায় ঢোকে না, এই ফলের নাম কেন কামরাঙ্গা? অনেকটা ১৮+ নামের মতন লাগে, মাঝে মাঝে তো বলতেও একটু ইতস্তত বোধ হয়.

Basically this is a fruit, but the flowers are lovely as well. Common name of this fruit is Starfruit, Carambola, etc. This is native to our South Asia and Southeast Asia. In Bangladesh we call this Kamranga(কামরাঙ্গা), if you translate it in English it will be the color of sex. Scientific name of the kamranga is Averrhoa carambola and it pertains to the plant family Oxalidaceae(Wood-Sorrel family).

Kamranga(কামরাঙ্গা) is a small slow growing evergreen tree that can grow around 5-12 meter in height. Leafs are small lens shaped with lovely foliage. Leafs are arranged opposite around stem, it folds during night. Young leafs are brown/coffee color which are attractive too.

Flower of Kamranga(কামরাঙ্গা) is reddish to rose purple with small bell shaped. It has five lobed petals with whitish at the edges. These tinny flowers grow as a cluster from the stem directly. In tropical condition this tree produces flower throughout the years more or less.

Kamranga(কামরাঙ্গা) fruit tastes sour during green but mild sweet(still sour) while ripen well. Slice cut at the cross-section of the fruit will provide a perfect star shaped(nomenclature of starfruit).

Chondro Probha(চন্দ্রপ্রভা ফুল) - Tecoma stans

বনানী গুলশানের দিকে এই ফুলের গাছ অনেক বাড়ির সামনেই দেখেছি. উজ্জল হলুদ রঙের ঘন্টার মতন ফুল হয় থোকায় থোকায়. আমাদের দেশের আবহাওয়ায় প্রায় সারাবছরই এই ফুল হয় গাছে. এই ফুলের বাংলা নাম আগে জানতাম না. সাইদুর রহমান স্বপন তার বইতে নাম দিয়েছে সোনাপাতি, নেট থেকে দেখলাম চন্দ্রপ্রভা আরেকটা নাম. পরের নামটাকেই আমার বেশি পছন্দ হয়েছে.

Scientific name of the flower is Tecoma stans. This belongs to the plant family Bignoniaceae(jacaranda family). Common name of the flower is Yellow Bell(for bell shape), Yellow Trumpet, etc. In Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ) we call this Chondro prova Ful(চন্দ্রপ্রভা ফুল), Shonapati Ful(সোনাপাতি ফুল), etc. This is native to America. This is the national flower of Bahamas.

Chondroprova(চন্দ্রপ্রভা) is a perennial densely branched shrubby plant(small tree). It can grow up to 20 feet in height. Leafs are bright green, a bit long lens shaped having toothed at the borders, arranged opposite at the stem. This plant can grow in dry and warm climates easily.

Flowers of Chondroprobha(চন্দ্রপ্রভা ফুল) is bright yellow in color having bell/trumpet shaped and two inches long. This showy flower grows as cluster from the tip of the branch. Flower doesn't have any smell but it can easily attract bees, ants, birds for bright color and nectar inside. Fruits of this plant are long and bean shaped.

At our country we are using this flowering plant as ornamental flower but this is invasive at some countries. Produced honey by bees from the nectar or pollen from this lovely flower can be poisonous.

Tanguar Haor(টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওর) is possibly the second largest Haor(হাওর) from Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ). This is declared as the motherland for fishes of Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ). Lot of Beel(বিল) and swamp area all together are called as Tanguar Haor(টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওর). Local people say this as Tangua Haor(টাঙ্গুয়া হাওর).

Plenty of rivers and canals passed through this massive haor. Most of those rivers were originated from the Indian hills. If you go there during winter then you have to go through the Baulai river(বাউলাই নদী).

Pankourir Jhak(পানকৌড়ির ঝাক)

Basically I went there to watch the migratory birds(অতিথী পাখি) from the haor. Lot of such birds used to come from Siberia during winter. Unfortunately my timing wasn't good. It was almost at the end of winter. I should have go there a month earlier or two.

Kalim Bird(কাদায় খাবারের খোঁজে কলিম পাখি)

After crossing the Baulai river(বাউলাই নদী), we had to pass two massive Beel to reach near to the birds. Most of the birds were Pankouri(পানকৌড়ি), Kalim(কলিম), White and brown egrets(সাদা বক ও কানী বক), Bali Hash(বালি হাস), and lot of unknown birds.

The water of the Haor is totally clear which will allow you to see everything under water. Lot of dense marshes are available under the water. Through those bushes plenty of fishes are passing extremely quickly. I felt like I am watching an aquarium from the boat. As the fishes are tremendously quick, it is hard to identify those.

Pankouri(পানকৌড়ি)

There is no locality available around the Haor. Only few small boats from the fishermen and others who used to live based on the Haor. You'll only hear the creeping sounds from the birds, nothing else.

Kani Bok(কানী বক)

We have hired an engine boat which was ok, but mistake was not to hire a small boat along with the engine boat. Due the the sound of the engine, the birds were flying away. By any means, we weren't able to reach at the most closing position to the birds.

Another mistake was not carrying a binocular with me and not having a DSLR camera(I don't have any). It is useless to shot at Tanguar Haor(টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওর) using point to point digital camera. So if you are planning to go there at next winter, make sure you have those with you.

দুরে বকের ঝাক

I love to swim at water. But I didn't dare to swim at Haor at winter. Cause the water level is low right now, and lot of underwater bushes are available. And under those bushes, you'll find plenty of muddy patches. These kind of conditions are risky, and not pleasant for swimming. The crystal water of the Haor was luring me, and I had to control myself unwillingly.

There is a temporary Ansar camp(আনসার ক্যাম্প) at the middle of the Haor. Also there is an organization available which is controlling the fishing at the Haor. Possibly it is morning 9 to afternoon 3 is the period of catching fish from Haor. After that, no fishing.

How to Go:

This is for the trip during winter. Rainy season will be different.

1. Using a bus from Dhaka you can easily come at Sunamganj Town(সুনামগঞ্জ টাউন). Best services are Mamun(মামুন), Shamoli(শ্যামলী), etc. Bus fare is 500 Taka. It will take around 6-7 hours during night journey.

2. From the Shaheb Bari Ghat(সাহেব বাড়ী ঘাট, 25° 4'17.65"N, 91°23'31.54"E), cross the river and come to Monipuri Ghat(মনিপুরি ঘাট, 25° 5'12.04"N, 91°23'22.09"E). It is 10 taka per person, and around 15 minutes of boat journey.

3. From the Monipuri Ghat(মনিপুরি ঘাট), hire motor bike to come at Tahirpur Bazar(তাহেরপুর বাজার). Each one will cost around 250-300 taka. Two person can ride on bike after the driver. GPS of the Tahirpur(তাহেরপুর) is (25° 5'54.73"N, 91°10'35.72"E). It will take around 40-50 minutes. Alternately you can use the Tempo if you taking female travelers with you.

4. Using a bike from the town, come to Solman Ghat(সলমান ঘাট), GPS is (25° 5'16.82"N, 91° 6'55.94"E). It will be 50-60 taka per bike and a 30 minutes ride.

5. Hire a boat from the Solman Ghat(সলমান ঘাট). A small engine boat will cost around 800 to 1000 taka per day. From the Ghat, it will take around two hours to reach at the middle of the Haor.

Where to Stay:

You can stay at the Tahirpur Upozila Guest House(তাহেরপুর উপজেলা গেস্ট হাউস, 25° 5'50.88"N, 91°10'36.05"E) or Tahirpur Dak Banglo(তাহেরপুর ডাক বাংলো, 25° 5'56.60"N, 91°10'39.91"E) during the trip. This is the nearest possible accommodation from the Haor. We have hired two rooms from the Upozila Guest House(উপজেলা গেস্ট হাউস), each of the room were 100 taka per night. Tips:

** Along with the engine boat, hire a small boat or two. Tie the boat behind the engine boat. You can use that to observe the birds more closely. At the middle of the Haor, you may find difficulties to hire such boats.

** There are lot of shako(সাকো) will be on your path, to cross by feet, it will be 2 taka per person. To cross using your hired bike, it will be 10 taka per bike. So during hiring bike, make sure about who will pay the bill.

I'll visit the Tanguar Haor again. At next winter to see the different beauties. And at next winter with a DSLR camera.

Daad Mordon(দাদ মর্দন) - Cassia alata

দাদমর্দন একটি উপকারী ঔষধি গাছ. এই গাছে উজ্জল হলুদ রঙের ফুল হয়. গাছের পাতায় এসিড জাতীয় উপাদান থাকায় তা দাদ নামক চর্ম রোগের থেকে প্রতিকারের জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়. এই জন্য এই গাছের নাম দাদ মর্দন.

This is a very important medicinal plant. Scientific name of this plant is Cassia alata with synonyms Senna alata. It pertains to the plant family Fabaceae(Pea family). Common name of the flower is Candle bush, Ringworm shrub, wild senna, ringworm cassia, Christmas candle, etc. In Bangladesh we call this as Daad Mordon(দাদ মর্দন), Dadmurdan(দাদমর্দন), etc. This plant is native to Mexico.

Dadmurdan is a perennial shrubby plant having height of 6-15 ft tall. Grows around the wetland, such as beside pond, lake, shallow water, etc. Large bilateral leafs are symmetrical opposed and fold together during night. Cup shape flowers are yellow in color. But before blooming, the flowers look like a candle, that's why people call this as candle bush flower.

The leaf of this plant has a profound number of Anthraquinones and Crysophanic acid which is very effective against fungus and microbial diseases. In herbal medicine, the leafs of this plant are using to cure ringworm(Thats why we call this Dadmordon, দাদ মর্দন).

Amer Mukul(আমের মুকুল) - Mangifera indica

এখন বসন্ত কাল, স্বাভাবিক ভাবেই আমের গাছে এখন মুকুল এসেছে. সাধারণত শীতের শেষের দিক থেকেই মুকুল আসতে শুরু করে, আর বসন্তের সময় যেইসব গাছে বাকি ছিল, সেইগুলাতেও মুকুল এসে যায়. সারা গাছ জুড়ে আমের মুকুল হয়, আর গাছের আশেপাশে থাকে একটা মিষ্টি গন্ধ. রসালো এই ফলের কথাই আমরা বেশি জানি, ফুল নিয়ে খুব একটা লেখা হয়না. আমের মুকুলকে আমরা আমের বোল, আমের মঞ্জুরি, ইত্যাদি নামেও জানি.

Mango is a juicy fruit and possibly the most consumed fleshy fruit around the world. Botanical name of Mango is Mangifera indica from the plant family Anacardiaceae. There are lot of varieties of Mango are available across the world, they are different in shape, size, and taste. In our country Bangladesh, we call this Aam(আম), and the flower of Mango is known as Amer Mukul(আমের মুকুল), Amer Bol(আমের বোল), etc.

Mango is a huge tree plant. This is the highest fruit tree from the world. It can be in different heights(maximum 100 ft) and circumferences. Leafs of this plant are liner. Young leafs are dark coffee color to light brown color with lovely foliage. During spring, if the tree doesn't bring flower, it will bring those beautiful leafs to celebrate spring.

Flower of mango is a cluster flower. Lot of tinny flowers comprises in a cluster. Flowers are having 6 petals. Color of the flower is creamy, and having yellow spot at each petal. Pinnacle of the stigma having a black or purple. Flower has a sweet smell that makes the air heavy at surroundings.

In Bangladesh, flower use to bloom at the later part of the winter to earlier of spring. Green mangoes use to grow throughout the first half of summer. At second half of summer mango use to ripe. This is the national fruit in several countries including India, Pakistan, etc. This plant can be propagated both from the seed or cutting.

Chhera Dip(ছেড়া দ্বীপ) is located at the southern portion of the st martin's island(সেন্ট মার্টিন দ্বীপ). A small island that looks adjacent to the main island, but it gets separated from the main island during high tide. That time the boats are only option to cross the 30-40 ft wide water barrier. Our today's plan is to go there. I am always parsimonious during traveling. So I have decided to go there and come back by feet.

During your walking, you'll find such things throughout the island.

We have started our walking at morning, just after the breakfast. It is at the middle of winter, but the weather here is very hot during day time. We have walked beside the white sandy beach of the island most of the time. As we have plenty of time on hand, we have wandering aimlessly around the beach. Thats why we required more than usual time to reach at the Chhera Dip(ছেড়া দ্বীপ).

When we have reached at the chhera dwip(ছেড়া দ্বীপ), it was 2:00 at afternoon. We have decided to have a fresh bath at the sea water before the lunch. This portion of the island was having less crowd interestingly. Didn't find anyone swimming at the water. So initially got confused about jumping inside water. Also the whole island was packed with numerous sharp corals. We started to find a suitable place at where we can at least swim.

We have selected a place at the south-east portion of the island. That place was having three sides were blocked with corals and only one side was open for water entering. That's why even during a low tide, the place was really tideless and tranquil. We have swam there for around 2 hours. Though the weather was hot, but the water was cold like winter. Nothing could stop us.

I have taken my swimming glass with me. Using such glass, you can easily see the underwater clearly. You just need to take a deep breath and submerge under the water. Based on your breath holding capability, you can pass around a minute under the water and observe the colorful fishes there. Scuba diving is expensive, so the swimming glass provided us a vicarious experience of scuba diving.

Even this small island has a country road.

It was low tide before our water playing. But the water level was rising interim with day progress for the advent high tide. We had to shift our knapsacks several times for rising water. Before 40 minutes of sunset, we have leaved the place and started returning to the hotel room. we were walking at the western side of the chhera deep(ছেড়া দ্বীপ) so that we can observe the sunset.

I was walking slowly and collecting colorful sea mussels(সামুদ্রিক ঝিনুক) from the sandy beach under the golden rays of sunset. When we have reached at the joining point of main island and chhera dwip(ছেড়া দ্বীপ), it was completely separated due to high tide. Luckily the water was around 1-2 ft which we have crossed easily by a careful walking. Sun was totally gone by the time.

As the sun is down, the weather was pleasant. Few of us were tired, so we were walking slowly. I had a torch light with me, but tired to avoid that as long as we could. Trust me, it was different feelings of returning from the island after the darkness. There was no moon at sky. It was the time around null moon.

About the St Martin's Island:

This is the only coral island of Bangladesh. It is known as Narkel Jinjira to local people. Narkel Jinjira(নারকেল জিনজিরা) means the island of coconuts. Only few thousands of people use to live there. Most of those people are fisherman. Women of this island are extremely conservative. You'll hardly see any local women at the island.

How to Go:

There are several bus services available from Dhaka to Teknaf(টেকনাফ). Using one of those you have to come at Teknaf(টেকনাফ). Best service from Dhaka is Shamoli Poribohon(শ্যামলী পরিবহন). Currently the bus fare is 800 taka. Alternately you can come to Cox's bazar from Dhaka and then using local bus services you can reach at Teknaf.

From the Teknaf jetty area you can use any ship of Sent Martin Island. Eagle, LCT Kutubdia(কুতুবদিয়া), Keyari Sindbad(কেয়ারী সিন্দাবাদ), etc are the few ship for the two hour sea crusing. A round trip ticket is 450 per person. You can buy the ticket of Ship from Dhaka if you want.

If you miss your ship, you can use Trawler 100 taka per person. Or use speed boat from Shah Porir Dip(শাহ পরীর দ্বীপ). Speed boat is costly. If you have max 8 member at your group, you can hire the boat for 2000 taka.

Where to Stay:

Plenty of hotels and guest houses are available at st martin island now a days. If you are with a group of bachelor people, you may not book hotels before arrivals. But if you are with your family that case make a reservation. Few good hotels from the island are Obokash(অবকাশ), Shimana Periye(সীমানা পেরিয়ে), Prince Heaven, Sand Shore, Blue Marine, etc. I have used a six bed cottage from Blue Marine Resort. It was 3000 taka per night. Contact number of their Dhaka booking office is 0173399001.

Where to Eat:

Few hotels of St martin's Island have food facilities. Those are considerably expensive but you can taste those if you are lazy. Basically the foods from the jetty area is the cheapest from the whole island. I'd prefer to have a walk towards the jetty and have a feast.

Notes:

1) If you are planning to walk, keep water with you. If you don't, then get water from villagers. They have tube-well that will give you fresh water.

2) If you get inside the water of Chhera Dwip(ছেড়া দ্বীপ), then make sure you are wearing a sandal or something, otherwise the sharp corals(ধারালো প্রবাল) will damage your feet vehemently.

3) Do not worry if you get tired or sick. A trawler service is available there for transporting tourists to main island, near your hotel.

ইচ্ছা থাকলে উপায় হয়... এর বড় উদাহরণ আমি, একা একাই ঘুরে বেড়াই, কারো ধার ধারি না... আবারও একটা উদাহরণ তৈরী করলাম, এইবার আমাদের সুনামগঞ্জ ভ্রমনের সময়... হঠাত মনে হলো রাত্রে সময় কাটানোর জন্য বারবি-কিউ করতে পারলে ভালো হতো... যেই ভাবে সেই কাজ... আমাদের কাছে কোনো সরঞ্জাম না থাকার পরও অসাধারণ একটা বারবি-কিউ করলাম... এই লেখায় থাকছে কিভাবে প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চল তাহিরপুর বাজার থেকে জোড়াতালি দিয়ে সবকিছু যোগাড় করে বারবি-কিউ আয়োজন করলাম... অভিজ্ঞতাটা এতটাই মজার ছিল, সবার সাথে শেয়ার করার লোভ সামলাতে পারলাম না...

ভূমিকা:

এইবার সুনামগঞ্জের টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওর ভ্রমন করার জন্য আট জনের একটা গ্রুপ বানিয়ে চলে গেলাম তাহিরপুর. জায়গাটা বাংলাদেশের অন্যান্ন অঞ্চলের থেকে একটু বেশিই সুযোগ সুবিধা বঞ্চিত. আমরা ছিলাম তাহিরপুর গেস্ট হাউসে. এইরকম জায়গায় রাত্রের বেলায় করার কিছুই থাকে না. আমার ভ্রমন সঙ্গীরা বলাবলি করছিলো রাত্রে বেলায় বারবি-কিউ করবে. কিন্তু বললেই তো আর সব হবে না, আমাদের কাছে কোনো সরঞ্জাম নাই. আর এইটাতো কক্স বাজার বা ঐরকম কোনো জায়গা না যে অর্ডার করলাম আর বারবি-কিউ কেউ করে দিল. সবাই আশা ছেড়ে দিলো. কিন্তু আমার মাথায় ছোট করে একটা বুদ্ধি এলো মাছ পুড়িয়ে খাবার. জিওগ্রাফি তে দেখেছি মাছ কে কলাপাতায় মুড়িয়ে কয়লার মধ্যে রেখে দিয়ে কিছুক্ষণ পুড়ানোর পরে খেতে. সবাইকে বললাম কথাটা. প্রথমে সবাই হেসে উড়িয়ে দিলেও, পরে চেষ্টা করে দেখতে দোষ কি মনোভাব নিয়ে নেমে পরলাম...

মাছে মশলা মাখানো

কমিটি গঠন:

আগেই বলে রাখি, সারা দিন আমদের অনেক ধকল গেছে. রাত্রে বাস ভ্রমন করে এসে আবার মোটর সাইকেলে করে তাহিরপুর এসে বেরিয়ে পড়েছিলাম টেকেরঘাটের দিকে ঘুরতে. সারাদিনে মুটামুটি ১৮/২০ কিলোমিটারের মতন হাটা হয়েগেছে. তাই আমাদের দলের শামিম আর শাহাদাত অনেক ক্লান্ত থাকায় ওরা বিছানায় শুয়ে পরলো কিছুটা বিশ্রাম নেয়ার জন্য. এই ফাকে আমরা বাকি ৬ জন মিলে একটা কমিটি গঠন করলাম. যেই কমিটির কাজ হলো কি কি লাগতে পারে তা লিস্ট করা. সময়ের সাথে আলোচনায় গতি পেল, বাড়তে থাকলো লিস্টের লাইন. এর মধ্যে আমাদের একজন আবার তার বন্ধুকে ফোন করলো বারবি-কিউ করতে গেলে কি কি লাগতে পারে, আর আমাদের বর্তমান অবস্থার কথা(আমাদের কিছুই নাই). সেই বন্ধু বুদ্ধি দিলো, মাছের মশলা প্রস্তুত করার থেকে বাজারে মশলা প্যাকেট পাওয়া যায় ৫ টাকা করে, সেইগুলা ১০ তা কিনে নিতে. যাই হোউক, আমাদের লিস্ট ফাইনাল করার পরে বেরিয়ে পরলাম বাজারে, শাহাদাত আর শামিমকে রেখে গেলাম বিশ্রাম নেয়ার পাশাপাশি রুম পাহারা দেয়ার জন্য.

সরঞ্জাম যোগাড় করণ:

সন্ধা নেমে গেছে, গ্রামের বাজার, মাছওয়ালা হয়তো আর বেশিক্ষণ থাকবে না. তাই প্রথমেই গেলাম মাছ বাজারে. রুই মাছ কিনলাম ৪ টা, ওজন ১.৫ কেজি ২৭০ টাকা দিয়ে. মাছ কিনার সময় বলেনিয়েছিলাম আমাদেরকে মাছের পেট কেটে পরিষ্কার করে দিতে হবে, আর ভালো করে ধুয়ে দিতে হবে. মাছওয়ালাটা ভালই সাহায্য করলো আমাদেরকে. গ্রামের মাছের বাজার, তার কাছেতো আর দা-বটি থাকার কথা না. তাই কেটে দেয়ার জন্য কাছের একটা হোটেলে গেল বটি নেয়ার জন্য. সেখান থেকে বটি নিয়ে আমাদের চাহিদা মতন মাছকে পরিষ্কার করে দিলো. লোকটা এই কাজের জন্য আমাদের থেকে ১০ টাকা নিলো.

বারবি-কিউ এর জন্য মাছ এখন প্রস্তুত

এইবার অন্যান্ন জিনিসপত্র কেনার পালা. প্রথমে কিনলাম গুড়ামরিচের পেকেট. দোকানদারকে বললাম আমাদের ইচ্ছার কথা. সে আর কিছু দিয়ে আমাদের সাহায্য করতে পারলোনা. যেহেতু লবন লাগবে, তাই কিছু লবন আমাদেরকে ফ্রী ফ্রী দিয়ে দিলো. এর পরে খোজা শুরু করলাম মাছের মশলা. এমনিতেই গ্রাম্য একটা আবহ আছে তাহিরপুরে(যদিও থানা), তাই আশা ছেড়েই দিয়েছিলাম. কয়েকটা দোকানে মুরগির মশলা পাওয়া যায়. একরকম স্থির করেই ফেলেছিলাম মুরগীর মসল্লা দিয়েই হবে মাছের বারবি-কিউ. কিন্তু হঠাত করেই এক দোকানে পেয়ে গেলাম মাছের মশলা. এই প্যাকেটের আবার দাম একেকটার ৮ টাকা করে. আমাদের যেহেতু ৫ টাকার ১০ টা পেকেট নেয়ার কথা ছিল, তাই আমরা নিলাম ৬ প্যাকেট, ৪৮ টাকা দিয়ে. ওই দোকান থেকেই সরিষা তেল কিনলাম, ২৭ টাকা দিয়ে একটা ছোট শিশি.

সারা বাজারে খুজেও কোথাও কয়লা পেলাম না. এখানে বেশকিছু হোটেল থাকলেও, এরা মেশিনে বানানো একধরনের কয়েল ব্যবহার করে রান্নার জন্য, যেইটাতে কয়লা হয়না. একজন বুদ্ধি দিলো মিষ্টির দোকানে খোজ নেয়ার জন্য, কেননা মিষ্টি বানাতে অনেক তাপ দরকার হয়, আর কাঠ ছাড়া সেই তাপ হবে না. তাই গেলাম মিষ্টির দোকানে. দোকানের ছেলেটা প্রথমেই বললো কয়লা হবে না. কিন্তু আমরা নাছোড় বান্দা. মিষ্টি খেতে বসে পরলাম দোকানেই. খেতে খেতে ছেলেটার সাথে আলাপের চেষ্টা করলাম. অনেক ব্যাস্ত থাকায় ছেলেটা আমাদের সাথে কথাও ভালো করে বলতে পারছিলোনা. যাই হোউক, শেষপর্যন্ত স্বীকার করলো যে ওদের ওখানে কয়লা আছে, আর আমরা যদি একটু পরে আসি তখন ও আমাদের কে কয়লা দিতে পারবে. বেরিয়ে পরলাম অন্যান্য জিনিস যোগাড় করার কাজে.

কয়লা সাজানো হচ্ছে

এর মধ্যে আমরা আবার ঠিক করে ফেলেছি নেট ব্যবহার করবো কলাপাতার বদলে. কেননা আজকে সারাদিনেও তাহিরপুরে খুব একটা কলাগাছের দেখা পাইনাই. তাই এই রাতের বেলায় যদিও গাছের দেখা পাই, গাছের মালিক রাতকরে পাতা ছিড়তে দিবে কিনা সেইটাও সন্দেহ ছিল. তাই নেট ব্যাবহারের সিদ্ধান্ত হলো. একটা দোকান থেকে নেট কিনলাম ৫০ টাকা দিয়ে. ২ ফুট মনে হয় দৈর্ঘ্য ছিল. এরপরে বারবি-কিউ করে খাবো কিসে? তাই কিনলাম ওয়ান টাইম প্লেট, ১০ টাকা করে ৫ টা. আর দুইটা ওয়ান টাইম গ্লাস ১০ টাকা করে. এরপরে কেরোসিন কেনার পালা. দোকানে গেলাম, কিন্তু ওরা কোন কিছুতে দিতে পারছিলোনা কেরোসিন. উপায় না দেখে আমরা অধ লিটারের পানির বোতল কিনলাম. সবাই মিলে ওই পানি খেয়ে খালি বোতল নিয়ে গেলাম ২০০ গ্রাম কেরোসিন তেল কিনতে, ১২ টাকা দিয়ে কিনলাম. মাছ নাড়ানোর জন্য কিছু একটা দরকার, তাই কিনলাম সাইকেলের স্পোক, যা দিয়ে মাছকে নাড়ানো যাবে. ৪ টা মনে হয় কিনেছিলাম ৮ টাকা দিয়ে. আসার সময় বাজার থেকে আধ কেজি টাটকা পাকা টমেটো কিনে নিলাম ৬ টাকা দিয়ে আর সেই মিষ্টির দোকান থেকে কয়লা নিলাম এক ব্যাগ ৩০ টাকার. মোটামুটি সব কিছু যোগাড়জন্ত করা শেষ.

ছবিতে দেখো, কেমন করে সাইকেলের স্পোক বেকিয়ে চিমটার মতন করেছি মাছ কে ধরার জন্য.

বারবি-কিউ করা:

রাতে ডিনারের পরে নেমে পরলাম বারবি-কিউ করতে. একটা প্লেটে গুরামরিচ, লবন, মাছের মশলা, সরিষার তেল সব পরিমান মতন ঢেলে মাখলাম. এর পরে মাছ ভালো করে আরেকবার ধুয়ে তাতে মশলা মেখে দিলাম. মশলা মাখানোর পরে নেমে পরলাম ইট খোজার কাজে. কয়েকটা ইট যোগাড় করে তার মাঝে কয়লা দিয়ে উপরে নেট বিছিয়ে দিলাম. আর কয়লায় একটু কেরোসিন ঢেলে তাতে আগুন ধরাতে শুরু করে দিলাম. মোটামুটি কয়লা যখন সব জ্বলতে শুরু করলো, তখন একটা একটা করে মাছ নেটের উপরে বসিয়ে দিলাম. এর পরে শুধু কয়লায় হালকা বাতাস করা. কয়লায় তাপ ছিল প্রচন্ড, তাই ১০ মিনিটও লাগে নাই মাছ বারবি-কিউ হয়ে যেতে.

সমাপ্তি:

দিনের বেলাতেই উপজেলা পরিষদের একজন হিসাবরক্ষকের সাথে পরিচয় হয়েছিল. রাতের বেলায় আমাদের হইচই দেখে চলে এলো দেখতে. আমাদের কান্ডকারখানা দেখে, আর কিভাবে সব করলাম শুনে লোকটা অনেক মজা পেলো. আমরা তাকে একটু টেস্ট করে দেখতে বললাম কেমন হলো. গেস্ট হাউসের ভিআইপি রুমে কিছু ছেলে উঠেছিল, ওরাও বেরিয়ে এলো দেখার জন্য. আমরা ওদেরকে দেখিয়ে দেখিয়ে খাচ্ছিলাম, আর সাধলাম আমাদের থেকে খেয়ে দেখার জন্য. একটা ভাব তখন কাজ করছিলো আমাদের মধ্যে, কারণ আমরা অনেক মজা করছি, আর ওরা এই শীতের রাত্রে ঘরের মধ্যে জুবুথুবু হয়ে বসে আছে.

আমার সাথে যেই ৭ জন এই ভ্রমনে ছিলো, তাদের নাম শামিম, শাহাদাত, নিক্সন, রুহী, ওসমান, এহসান, অনিক.

Tukma Ful(তুকমা ফুল) - Hyptis suaveolens

আমাদের দেশের ঝোপ ঝাড়ে এই জংলী ফুলের গাছে প্রায়ই দেখা যায়. ছোট ছোট নীল রঙের ফুল খুব একটা আকর্ষনীয় না. তাই আমাদের চোখেও খুব একটা পরে না. সম্পূর্ণ গাছ্টাতেই একটা উগ্র গন্ধ আছে. এই গাছকে আমরা তুকমা গাছ বলেই চিনি. ছোট ছোট তুকমার বিচি পানিতে ভিজিয়ে রাখলে ফুলে ফেপে সাদা ভাতের মতন আকার ধারণ করে. সাধারণত শরবত বা এইরকম কিছুতে মিশিয়ে খাওয়া হয়. গাছটির অনেক ঔষধি গুন আছে. জানতে চাইলে গুগল থেকে দেখে নিতে অনুরোধ করলাম.

Scientific name of the plant is Hyptis suaveolens. It is from the plant family Lamiaceae(mint family). We call this flower Tukma Ful(তুকমা ফুল), Tokma Ful(তোকমা ফুল), etc. At India, this is known as Bilati Tulshi(বিলাতি তুলসী). Common names in English are Wild Spikenard, American Mint Bush, etc.

Plants are 1-1.5 meter tall and shrubby. Stem is square if you see the dissection. The whole plant is hairy and having a fragrance when crushed. This is an annual plant and propagation is mainly done by the seeds.

Flowers are small, grows as cluster from the axils of the leaf. Color of the flower is blue to mauve. Seeds of this plant are black and flat in shape. If you dissolve the seeds into water, a white layer produces around seeds which reassemble those as rice. That's why people use the seeds at juices and drinks.

The whole plant has more or less herbal medicinal uses. Drinking this seed with water will lessen your constipation problem.

Manikganj: Baliati Jomidar Bari(বালিয়াতি জমিদার বাড়ি)

Actually I am tired of traveling long distance at past few weekends. So I didn't make any tour plan for this weekend. But suddenly at morning, I have decided to visit the exotic Baliati Jomidar Bari(বালিয়াটি জমিদার বাড়ি) at Manikganj(মানিকগঞ্জ). It is too near from the Dhaka town, but I didn't make my time to give a visit before.

The great Baliati Zomidar Bari(বালিয়াটি জমিদার বাড়ি) is located at the Saturia Upozila of Manikganj(সাটুরিয়া, মানিকগঞ্জ) district. Name of the village is Baliati. This archaeological building is about 200 years of old. A river named Gazikhali(গাজীখালী নদী) which is demised interim of the time, flowed at the northern side of the palace.

The whole premise is a huge one(approximately 16000 square meter). There are possibly 200 rooms available inside the premise. Back side of the palace has a pond having four ghats(ঘাট). Other side of the pond has a series of sanitary lavatory.

Gobinda Ram Shaha(গোবিন্দ রাম সাহা) was the settler of the Zomidari(জমিদারী) at Baliati. He was a salt merchant. His forefather was poor and started small business. Later he owned that from his parent. Then he extended that business further and established Zomidari(জমিদারী).

Original name was Baliati(বালিয়াতি), but after converting into English, then name transgressed into Baliati(বালিয়াটি). This Jamidar family helped in education sector greatly. Dhaka Jogonnath(জগন্নাথ) University was established by them as well as the Jogonnath(জগন্নাথ) Hall of Dhaka University.

All the buildings from the premise were not built at the same time. Those buildings were built at different times by different persons from the ruler's family. Most of the buildings are having a touch of Greek-Roman style, for example the pillars, roof, etc.

RP Shaha(আর পি সাহা), a Magnanimous munificent person of Tangail is one of my idol. He has married Kiran Bala(কিরণ বালা), a woman from this Zomidar Family. That philanthropic man wanted to build a hospital at Baliati, but didn't get permission. He later built that hospital at his own town.

How to go:

There are several ways to come at Baliati(বালিয়াটি).

1. First you have to come at Saturia(সাটুরিয়া). GPS of Saturia(সাটুরিয়া) is (23°58'15.66"N, 90° 2'14.90"E).

** A bus from Gabtoli is available for Dhaka-Saturia route. You can take that one for 60 taka. It will require you around 2 hours to come at Saturia(সাটুরিয়া).

** Or take a bus of Dhaka-Manikganj(ঢাকা-মানিকগঞ্জ) route from Gabtoli(গাবতলী), or Dhaka-Paturia(ঢাকা-পাটুরিয়া) service of BRTC bus from Gulistan(গুলিস্তান). Bus fare is 70 taka. After 1.5 hour get down from the bus at Kalampur(কালামপুর) Bus Stand. GPS of Kalampur(কালামপুর) is (23°55'4.52"N, 90° 9'16.16"E). From there take a bus of Saturia(সাটুরিয়া). Bus fare is 20 taka and will require 20 minutes.

2. Using a rickshaw for 20 taka from Saturia(সাটুরিয়া) bazaar, you can easily come to the Baliati Palace. GPS of the Baliati Jomidar bari(বালিয়াটি জমিদার বাড়ি) is (23°59'40.79"N, 90° 2'32.72"E).

Where to Stay:

You can go there and come back within the same day. So accommodation is not mandatory. There is a picnic spot named Nahar Garden(নাহার গার্ডেন) near the Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ি). Possibly they have an accommodation facility(I am not sure though).

Where to Eat:

As this archaeological palace became a popular tourist spot recently, you'll find several restaurants in front of the palace for lunch.

Ghonta Ful(ঘন্টা ফুল) - Allamanda neriifolia

Common name of the flower is Golden Trumpet, Yellow Bell, Allamanda, Bush Allamanda, etc. In Bangladesh we call this as Allamanda(আলামান্ডা), Ghonta Ful(ঘন্টা ফুল), etc. Scientific name of the flower is Allamanda neriifolia from the plant family Apocynaceae (Oleander family). This is native to Brazil, but now widely available at our country.

Allamanda is a shrubby, vinelike bushy plant. Flowers of this plant are basically yellow in our country. Flowers look like a trumpet(also like a bell). Flower doesn't have any redolence. Elliptic to ovate shaped leafs are having lovely foliage.

Panikula Ful(পানিকুলা ফুল) - Dysophylla quadrifolia

পানিকুলা ফুল, গোলাপী রঙের ছোট ছোট আগাছা ফুল... সাধারণত ধান খেতের ফসল কাটার পরে যে পতিত জমি থাকে, সেখানে এই গাছ হয়... আগাছা এই গাছ যেমন ছোট, তেমনি এর ফুলটাও ছোট হয়... থোকায় থোকায় ফুল হয়, খুব ভালো করে লক্ষ্য না করলে চোখে পরে না...

Botanical name of this tiny delicate flower is Dysophylla quadrifolia. It belongs to the plant family Lamiaceae(some people says Labiatae). In Bangladesh we call this Panikula Ful(পানিকুলা ফুল), Korpur(কর্পুর), etc. This is native to Asian region.

This is a herbaceous plant that grows at the moist land after the paddy harvesting. Its a very small herb plant and four leafs are placed as a whirl around the stem. Leafs have the fragrance similar to Tulshi(তুলসী) and Pudina(পুদিনা) leaf.

Flower are very small too. It has four petals. Color of the flower is pink. Flowers grow as a cluster. It produces small fruit that contains lot of seeds. Possibly this is the reason for making the plant totally eradicable.

It has several medicinal uses, most common use is to sooth the abdominal pain using the leaf.

Manikganj: Teota Jomidar Bari(তেওতা জমিদার বাড়ী)

Teota Jomidar Bari(তেওতা জমিদার বাড়ী) is located at the Shibalaya upozila(শিবালায়া উপজেলা) of Manikganj(মানিকগঞ্জ) district. The palace is locally known as Teota Rajbari(তেওতা রাজবাড়ি), Teota Jomidar bari(তেওতা জমিদার বাড়ী), etc. This old Zomidar(জমিদার) palace is possibly over 300 years of old.

Noborotno Mondir(নবরত্ন মন্দির)

This old dilapidated palace was the home of two brothers named Babu Hemsankar Ray(বাবু হেমসংকর রায়) and Babu Joy Sankar Ray(বাবু জয় সংকর রায় ) who were the ruler of Teota(তেওতা). The whole premise has over 50 rooms. Currently those are occupied by the homeless people.

Noborotno Mondir(নবরত্ন মন্দির)

Western side of the building has a large pond and beside the pond a Temple available(noborotno temple, নবরত্ন মন্দির). The temple is a 4 stored building having lovely architecture. Second and the third store has a minaret like moth(মঠ) at each corner.

The whole jomidar palace(জমিদার বাড়ী) is situated beside the bank of mighty river Jamuna(যমুনা নদী). After a few miles from the palace premise, the river merged with another great river Padma(পদ্মা নদী). The palace is a two stored building and from the roof you can easily see the Jamuna river(যমুনা নদী). I had a chance to enjoy the sunset from the roof during my travel.

A story is available about a poor boy named Pachu(পাচু). He was a hard working man and by that hard work along with his honesty, he earned lot of money by doing tobacco trading. With that money, he has bought Zomidari(জমিদারী) and changed his name Ponchanan Sen(পঞ্চানন সেন).

Inside the palace

This palace is the birth place of Promila Debi(প্রমীলা দেবী), the wife of our national poet Nazrul Islam(নজরুল ইসলাম). Poet first saw her in this palace when he came here to visit Promila's cousine Dhiren Sen(ধীরেন সেন). He wrote the poem "Tumi Shundor tai cheye thaki prio, sheki mor oporadh"(তুমি সুন্দর তাই চেয়ে থাকি প্রিয়, সেকি মোর অপরাধ).

How to Go:

1. First you have to come at Aricha Ferry ghat(আরিচা ফেরি ঘাট). A BRTC bus from Gulistan(গুলিস্তান) use to come at Aricha Ghat(আরিচা ঘাট). Bus fare is 70 taka. It will require around 2.5 hours to 3 hours to come at Aricha(আরিচা). GPS of Aricha(আরিচা) is (23°50'9.59"N, 89°46'53.47"E).

2. From the ferry ghat, you can take a rickshaw for 20 taka or auto for 10 taka to reach at the Jomidar Bari of Teota(তেওতা জমিদার বাড়ী). It will take around 15 minutes to reach. GPS coordinate of the Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) is (23°51'30.72"N, 89°46'42.33"E).

Where to Stay:

You can go there and come back with in the same day. Manikganj(মানিকগঞ্জ) doesn't have any quality hotel to accommodate tourists.

Where to eat:

Once upon a time Aricha(আরিচা) was a busy place, but now there is nothing left. So you have to relay on the district town, or the Patuary Ghat(পাটুয়ারি ঘাট) for fooding.

Both the river Padma(পদ্মা) and Jamuna(যমুনা) are very near to the palace premise. So don't miss the chance to visit the two giant river at a same day.

Dudh Kolmi Ful(দুধ কলমী ফুল) - Ipomoea turpethum

This is a morning glory flower. Scientific name of this flower is Operculina Turpethum with lot of synonyms, such as Operculina Turpethum, convolvulus turpethum, etc. It belongs to the plant family Convolvulaceae.

Common name of this weed flower is Ivy-leaf Morning Glory, Turpeth, Indian Jalap, etc. In Bangladesh we call this as Dudh Kolmi Ful(দুধ কলমী ফুল), possibly the white flower that is similar to the Kolmi ful(কলমী ফুল). In India, this flower is known as Nishoth.

This Turpeth flower is a herbaceous hairy vine like plant. Leafs are ovate and narrowing to a pointed tip. It's leafs are placed opposite around the vine. Grows as a bush and occupy everything where it grows.

Flower comes from the axils of the leaf. Color of the flower is bright white and shape as a trumpet/funnel. This flower looks similar to other morning glory flowers having a star formed inside the petals.

This is considered as a weed plant, but has lot of medical uses of the root as anti inflammatory agent. Also it is a herbal purgative for the snake and scorpion bites.

Sunflower(সূর্যমুখী ফুল) - Helianthus annuus

প্রথম দিকে এইটা বাংলাদেশে বাগানের ফুল থাকলেও এখন আর তা নেই. কৃষকরা এখন এই ফুলের চাষ করে এর বিজ থেকে ভোজ্য তেল উত্পন্ন করার জন্য. সূর্যমুখী ফুল আকারে একটু বড়ই হয়. হলুদ রঙের এই ফুলকে দেখে আমরা ভাবি একটাই ফুল, আসলে কিন্তু তা নয়. এই ফুলের মাঝে যেই গোলাকার অংশ আছে, সেখানে এক থেকে দুই হাজারের মতন ছোট ছোট ফুল রয়েছে. আর আমরা যাকে হলুদ পাপড়ি বলে মনে করি, তা আসলে গাছের পাতার পরিবর্তিত একটা রূপ. আরো মজার ব্যাপার হলো, এই ফুল সব সময় সূর্যের দিকে মুখ করে থাকে. বেলা বাড়ার সাথে সাথে এই ফুলের মুখের দিক পরিবর্তন হয়.

We know sunflower as an ornamental flowering plant that increases the value of a garden. But from last few decades, farmers from our country has been started to cultivate Sunflower on a large scale. Their main target is the sunflower seeds that has a high demand for producing vegetable oil.

Botanical name of this multipurpose plant is Helianthus annuus. It belongs to the plant family Asteraceae. This is native to America but widely cultivating at our country now a days. We call this Surjomukhi Ful(সূর্যমুখী ফুল) which means a flower that faces to the sun, or a flower that has a face of a sun. Both the case is true for the flower's nomenclature.

Sunflower is an annual plant and the plausible single flower actually an inflorescence. The circular head of the flower is actually comprises of 1000-2000 of small flowers. Color of the flower is yellow and the daisy flower like petals are not the actual petal.

This flower is called sunflower basically for it's tendency of always facing towards the sun. All the flowers from a garden use to face at same direction(towards the sun) and keep moving along with the dis-positioning of the sun. In cartoon and other purpose we use this sunflower to depict the sun.
