Introduction
Though this project is from 2004 –that is before CSID–, we included it here for two reasons. One is because of its mix of analysis and visualization. And the second is because it shows sometimes proposing a shift of perception can be a form of innovation. We proposed for the mapping the perspective of “data flow”, and not the usual “the-company-is-the-center-of-the-world”. The style is sober on purpose.

Today the organization, as described in our project, has changed, but the complexity remains the same.

Objectives

Mapping of all the software tools, work processes and stakeholders of Publica Data and in general of the whole context of official Swiss media research.

Prepare the fundamental mappings for a future digital knowledge data base.

Introduce step-by-step new employees into the company’s work and context.

Client
Publica Data AG belongs to Mediapulse Foundation for Media Research. The main goal of the company is to market the data of the media and audience research of Mediapulse Foundation for Media Research. This data consists mainly from continuous, quantitative research of the TV & Radio consumption and Internet media in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Publica Data AG has offices in Berne and Zollikon (Zurich).

How things are done in art can be an useful principle for creating new products or services in many business fields.

The psychological principles of Gestalt are often used in art. Other similar principles, too, like the gallery space itself (a 3D Gestalt?) or the stereotype of a table, help the visitor’s perception to focus on what is significant, to recognize a form, and to create meaning.

The following images are from various exhibitions in Zurich.

Here are some working principles based on the idea of Gestalt:

Deform the stereotype of a table (a principle used in arts and crafts, too).

Different materials and objects are optically unified by a coherent form, e.g. a cylinder / a human body / geometric forms / a line / a rectangle, the frame.

Arbitrarily (?) assembled materials are unified by one color (gold).

Perception is guided by types of “bases”, e.g. put everything on a pedestal / on a carpet on the floor (red) / on a shelf / a base on another base (little objects on a book on a shelf).

The room, the declared exhibition space is a guiding principle. See the image with the boxes: this is on left of the entrance to a gallery and on the right is a coat-rack with umbrellas, but this won’t affect the visitor’s perception of the exhibition. Use any part of a room, e.g. put things on the floor (the neon lights) / pin papers on the wall / put something in a transparent box and hang it to the wall. (Other parts that are not shown here: the ceiling, the windows, the lights and so on.)

Check out the CSID showroom Medamothi, too. It is an open space for all types of visualizations. From business facts and charts to analytical art. Because there is more to visualization than just PowerPoint.

Here are several examples of teapots and saucers of an exhibition in Zurich. The items had been more or less transformed.

Multiply one part, e.g. the spout.

Change one part, e.g. the handle: make it ergonomic / use one ore more different materials / make it figurative (a dragon) / make it geometric or more stylize.

Change the form of the whole teapot, e.g. use several teacups to create a teapot (principle of contiguity or proximity).

Print something on the saucer, e.g. a surprising or unusual element like the map of the restaurant or the underside of the saucer.
