Two weeks ago we traveled down to New York to celebrate the launch of our newest innovation IdeaPaint CLEAR, as well as our exciting new partnership with charity: water. Our kick-off event took place at charity: water's stunning SoHo office, and gave us an opportunity to showcase our revolutionary new transparent dry erase paint to friends, family and the New York press.

On display for all to see and test out was, of course, IdeaPaint CLEAR, which now covers a new portion of charity: water’s workspace. As Paull Young told us, that means even more ideating. "As we work to try to reinvent charity, a lot of the collaboration and idea generation is happening every day on the wall thanks to IdeaPaint." The more ideating they do, the better off the world is. Since 2006, charity: water has creatively responded to the challenge of supplying safe drinking water to people in developing countries, and we, at IdeaPaint, have long since been fans of theirs. We first painted out their office back in 2010, and have been thrilled to be a small part of the great work they do.

So when it came to contributing to a significant, reliable cause, we of course jumped at the chance to build on our relationship with charity: water. As Morgen Newman explains in the video above, we’ve traditionally demonstrated support by donating free paint – to schools, start-ups, non-profits, etc. Now, we're ready to lend a hand and a dollar to fellow creative people. Through this new partnership we have committed up to $25,000 to charity: water. For every IdeaPaint CLEAR purchase, $25 goes directly to funding water projects around the globe!

So what are you waiting for? Pick up a kit of CLEAR today and invest in two great things: charity: water, and your next big idea.

We’d like to preface this IdeaPaint case study with a song.

Why this one? It was playing at Skiver Advertising when Tyler (Art Director) and Rob (Executive Creative Director) sat down to tell us about themselves and the company behind one of our favorite IdeaPaint installs (pictured above). If you don’t follow along with us on Facebook, it may look unfamiliar. If you do, then chances are you remember this pretty awesome photo.

At Skiver, music is an integrated part of office life, and their song recommendation reminded us that sometimes turning it up can help one tap into his or her creative energy. But, back to the matter at hand: inspiring office environments.

We recently came across an article on designtaxi called, “Creative Surroundings Inspire Passions” and instantly thought of Skiver, so we wrote them an email inquiring about the state of their music-infused IdeaPaint wall. In their witty and candid response, we found out a lot, including an abridged list of the albums who made the final cut: AC/DC: Let There Be Rock, Motley Crue: Shout at the Devil, Elvis: Rocker, Zevon: Excitable Boy, The Who: Who’s Next, Ted Nugent: Cat Scratch Fever…

We also found out that when it came to tricking out their workspace, they didn’t stop at IdeaPaint. Their office is home to a custom black and red production table that doubles as a regulation-sized ping-pong table. Rob and Tyler told us, “You can find a piano, drum set, array of guitars, amps, and other audio equipment for the occasional jam session. We are also in the process of having custom aluminum panels done by Parvez Taj.” Surrounding themselves with creative work, creative outlets, and creative people helps make their job easier. “We are passionate about creating things that inspire people. It’s our job, and we get the opportunity to create something artistic, engaging and motivating. Every day. It’s pretty cool.”

While they call it a job, we were almost convinced otherwise. As they say, “There is a ton of camaraderie. It seems like we’re just a group of friends hanging out and getting stuff done rather than coworkers stuck at work. Few people can say they look forward to a Monday morning – I think we can all agree that we do.” And that’s no accident.

What we’ve learned: Keep your inspiration close. Remind yourself and your coworkers of things that make you happy and incite wonder. Take a page from Skiver’s book and create a place where you want to be, even on Monday morning.

Anybody have a bugle? Today, we’re announcing our latest innovation, IdeaPaint CLEAR, and we could use some musical accompaniment!

In 2006, we successfully led the charge that knocked the “board” off the whiteboard. Ever since, people have been using IdeaPaint to add functionality and fun to any surface they choose.

Well, it gets even better!

Our new product, IdeaPaint CLEAR, eliminates the “white” from whiteboard, too and takes the traditional whiteboard to a whole new level of awesomeness. (It’s called evolution.) CLEAR is a virtually odorless, transparent paint that can transform an entire room into a place that not only inspires ideas, but also provides the real estate to develop them.

If you’re worried about color, don’t be! CLEAR lets you keep your existing décor. Have a neon pink wall that you’ve grown attached to and can’t imagine changing? No problem. You can paint CLEAR directly over it, and in four days you’ll have a surface that erases clean every time. Your walls won't look different, but they'll act different. So will you.

A room painted in CLEAR lets you tap into your creative, collaborative, and organizational potential. Ditto for the people you work and learn with. You never know where you’ll be when your next great idea appears, so we recommend leaving no surface unpainted.

Remember, anything can be a whiteboard! (If we still want to call it that!)

We’re excited to see how you use CLEAR to turn your space into a creative place! If you’d like to learn more about it, visit ideapaint.com/clear or get in touch. We’re available by email at info@ideapaint.com or by phone at 800.393.5250.

[DIGGBUTTON]

A couple weeks ago, we came across an article about IdeaPaint, written by someone at Wistia, a small startup in Somerville, MA. Not only did they sing our praises, they also candidly commented on the quality of IdeaPaint in comparison to competitive products. Needless to say, they got our attention.

We tweeted a hello, and they were generous enough to invite us over. We found their office tucked behind a busy bus stop in Davis Square, at the end of the Minuteman Bike Path. Upon opening the door, we realized we were walking into some kind of work place wonderland. First thing we saw? A dual-player basketball shooting game.

You’ll recognize some familiar features during the tour of Wistia’s office: natural light, an open floor plan, people brainstorming in groups, some sitting, some standing, the pattering feet of a friendly office dog. Their office is inviting and simplistic. It is uncluttered, and while it doesn’t look over thought, it has been strategically planned to leave enough room for the big ideas when they come, and varied spaces to explore the smaller ones still in their early stages.

Much of the credit goes to Joe Ringenberg, Wistia’s Creative Director, who has been tasked with curating their place of business. Above all, he said, “We try to inhabit the space.” And to be honest, it really feels that way. There’s a lofted hideaway in the back room, a rope swing, a ping-pong table, a keg. There are beanbag chairs, brick walls, and turf floors. It’s by no means traditional, but that’s what makes it special. The motivation behind all of Joe’s choices is that work doesn’t have to feel like work. In fact, the brick and mortar itself can feel like home. Achieve that and you’re already strides ahead of the competition.

Wistia’s bread and butter is video hosting. They create controlled and branded environments for online videos, which means no annoying ads and pop up windows that tend to bombard platforms like YouTube. With clients in disparate fields, Wistia uses IdeaPaint to support their in-house collaboration. As Joe told us, some of their best solutions come from brainstorms that involve people from various departments, including accounting and IT.

It helps that there is IdeaPaint in the office's communal places. (Soon there will be even more!) “It’s important for us to feel like there is a creative spot anywhere you turn in this office,” Joe commented. “If you’re sitting at the lunch table with somebody, and the discussion turns into something really creative, the tools that you need are right there. That’s where we feel we are harnessing the best characteristics of the team that’s working here.” After a quick game of ping-pong, we’d been sold. Without any pitches or briefs, they’d convinced us that in their small office satisfying any client’s need was possible. From one blog to another, thanks for having us!

[DIGGBUTTON]

High school is notorious for an excess of black and white xeroxed worksheets. You know, the ones that were stuffed in lockers and then strewn about hallways and thrown down stairwells come June. As Cathy Risch told us, they don't leave much room for creativity, or color. She has been teaching at West Aurora High School, just 50 miles west of Chicago, for 27 years and had all but perfected the art of the worksheet/PowerPoint lesson combo when West Aurora's Assistant Principal approached her with something new. How would she feel about adding IdeaPaint to her science classroom?

Cathy was in. A self-proclaimed "chatty" highschooler herself, Cathy knew full well that attention spans run short when lessons get repetitive. Adding IdeaPaint meant she could diversify her lesson plans while supporting her students' various learning styles. Once she shared the news with her students, she created a serious buzz. They were excited about being able to work together and collaborate on the desks. Some even admitted to being most excited about simply being able to draw. (We know the feeling!) With the help of School Speciality, we gave their classroom the royal treatment.

The addition of IdeaPaint's interactive surfaces has completely changed Cathy's classroom. Not only has it "pumped up collaboration," but it has also helped her students remember more of the class material. Cathy paired IdeaPaint's erasable surfaces with colored markers, and her seemingly small choice has made a huge difference. Jenna, a senior biology student, summed it up nicely for us: "Using colors makes me memorize [the lesson] better." It's clear Cathy's got science down to a science. Add color for best results.

She says, "Any time you let them have markers, colored pencils, they're more exicted about whatever they're doing. It seem like if you put in activities where they can actually use colors, it's more interesting for them. It's not the same old thing all the time." We'll be sure to keep the markers comin'.

A single coat of paint can change the way your students learn and interact with each other and their ideas.
At IdeaPaint, employees often get the opportunity to wear many hats. For example, a couple weeks ago when I was in Chicago for some meetings, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to go back to high school for a day.

A little back story: Mike Curta, who teaches Geography at Eisenhower High School, contacted IdeaPaint a few months ago. He shared some photos over Facebook of his classroom where he has integrated IdeaPaint and Evernote (one of our favorites) into his daily teaching routine. We were excited to see how both products supported his innovative way of teaching, sharing, and capturing ideas. We reached out to Mike and asked if it would be possible to come for a visit. He agreed and on April 11th, I met Evernote's Ron Toledo and Nick Strayer at Eisenhower High School at 7:30am. Bright and early.

After a quick sign-in at the main office, we interviewed Mike in his office for a half hour or so. Then we went to his classroom, listened to morning announcements (after a quick Pledge Of Allegiance), and over the course of the morning observed several geography lessons being taught to students from grades 9 - 12. Mike had planned a day of lessons that showcased the classes' use of IdeaPaint, Evernote, and the two products in tandem.

Mike applied IdeaPaint on the work tables where all of his students sit, as well as on one large section of a wall, which his students refer to as “The Big Wall.” The school provides the students with laptop notebook computers for use during class, and the Evernote technology allows them to use these notebooks and their smart phones to capture the notes, images, and brainstorms that they write on the IdeaPaint. When it comes time to do their homework, they can refer back to their images via a home computer or on their phone. To help you get a better idea of how exactly they are being used, I snapped an album’s worth of pictures which you can view on our Facebook page.

The lesson plan of the day focused around population density in Japan. As if the increased energy of jumping up and adding an idea to "The Big Wall" didn't increase the learning dynamic enough, the students were also encouraged not only to write on their own tables, but also at times were asked to switch tables to review, share, and add to the ideas of their peers.

The combination of learning through lecture, note-taking, illustration, physical involvement - not only verbal but also written participation in lessons - seemed to be a great way to reach every student, regardless of his or her learning style. As Mr. Curta noted, different people learn in different ways. Some of his students know English only as a second language. IdeaPaint and Evernote have allowed him to get through to students of various levels of ability, and have effectively distinguished his classroom as the most inherently interesting and dynamic learning environment in the school. To paraphrase the kids, they like going to Mr. Curta's class because he makes learning fun; the use of IdeaPaint and Evernote have enhanced student interest regardless of the day's lesson. At the end of the day, that’s our goal, and Evernote’s.

In the next month, we will be editing and finalizing a video with Evernote, and hope you'll check it out when it's ready!

"They're sponges." That's how Annika Levitt affectionately describes her fleet of six and seven-year-old 1st graders at the Kiel School in Kinnelon, New Jersey.

We were first introduced to Annika's classroom during our IDEAPAINT360 Makeover Contest. They were among the hundreds of schools and businesses across the country that applied for a chance to re-think their space with IdeaPaint. As a contest finalist, their video submission was put to a public vote. It was inspiring to see how much enthusiastic support came from the school, the familes and the town of Kinnelon. Candidly, we weren't all that surprised that they'd won the public over with their very convincing (and adorable) IdeaPaint poem, because they won us over too!

After planning how we could best support Mrs. Levitt's goals, we got to work transforming Room 201. As the video showcases, we left no surface unpainted! We wanted to make sure all of her kids' ideas, no matter how big or small, had a place to take hold.

Being in her classroom reminded us of how wide a range of learners there are, especially in early education. They're still learning, if you will, how to learn. One of Mrs. Levitt's goals was to create an environment where each child and their unique learning habits were completely supported - a tall order if you stick to conventional methods. Not so with IdeaPaint. She likened teaching, inclusive of creating the ideal classroom, to someone waiting for an elevator. Some people get stuck in the habit of repeatedly clicking the button and hoping for it to arrive sooner or for something to change. Others, like Mrs. Levitt, try something new.

We're so glad she did! She remembers introducing her kids to their new classroom. "Watching them brainstorm and watching their words and writing come alive. They're coming up with pictures and writing on the floor! To watch them do it for the first time was unforgettable."

To celebrate the makeover, Mrs. Levitt and the Kiel School threw a party and were kind enough to invite us. Upon arrival, we were handed a cupcake decorated with IdeaPaint blue icing (they were delicious!) and a marker. Eager to share every newly painted surface with their families, kids, parents and siblings alike scribbled, doodled, and declared the IdeaPaint installation a complete success! Given the state of the classroom post-party, we think they've got a big year of learning ahead.

Convention says we're in the paint business, but we like to think that we're in the business of creating dynamic spaces. Our ultimate goal is to help you be more creative, more communicative and more collaborative, and quite frankly that doesn't start or finish with a coat of IdeaPaint. Given that, we're always on the hunt for ways to make work spaces work even better (ours included). And who knows better than the people whose companies have produced great ideas? We teamed up with author Brian Coleman, created a list of high-powered, high-thinking creative business leaders, and set out to explore the nuances of creative thinking.

What resulted was this eBook, Managing Creativity, an easy-to-read, candid, and compelling collection of quotes, anecdotes and analysis. It was a treat, really, to talk shop with the likes of Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. Same goes for Stacy Madison, the Founder of Stacy's Pita Chips and Operating Partner at Fireman Capital Partners. We found out that both Julia Hu, CEO of LARK, and independent filmmaker Doug Pray consider themselves problem solvers above anything else. Arne van Oosterom of DesignThinkers Group and Stephen Webber of the Berklee College of Music cited curiosity and creativity as key traits. Brian DeCubellis, Creative Director at MTV Scratch, advised us to get our "hands dirty and make stuff on a small scale, often." They told us to dream big and be okay with feeling insecure, among other things - all of which we've taken to heart.

Some of the people we interviewed may sound familiar if you’ve followed along with IdeaPaint since day one. Michael Schaeffer led us through Reebook's headquarters and you met students of Christina Jenkins when we madeover the NYC iSchool. Others we only recently reached out to and are slowly getting to know.

Like Stephen Webber, for example. This quote of his stood out to us and touches upon our reasoning behind trying our hand at a multi-sourced collaborative eBook. He said, with regards to his own works as a professor and music producer:

"In my own life I have always tried to combine disparate things in new ways, like how to bring a classical orchestra and hip-hop music together. The fun and creativity is always at its peak when you are combining things in new ways. So many amazing things have been done in the world because people didn't know that what they were attemping was impossible."

We feel similarly. By surveying creatives from various industries, our hope was to create something new, too. Something that can act as inspiration for you and your team wherever it is you call "work." We hope you enjoy it, and encourage you to share it with a coworker, a friend, a student, or a mentor. What's nice about creativity, is that we all benefit from it. Your next step may influence and inspire someone else's. More creativity means a more efficient, more interesting, and more beautiful world. Let's get going!

One of the perks of our job is getting to visit schools all across the country. After years of painting, we’ve seen a lot, but when we arrived at The Equity Project (TEP), we knew we’d come across something very different.

Before we go into the installation part of this story, take a second and imagine starting a school. Imagine writing a charter articulating why and how your school would be unlike any other because it would fundamentally challenge the way schools are run. That’s TEP.

Called, “one of the country’s most closely watched educational experiments,” by the New York Times, TEP compensates teachers with a $125,000 annual salary, with the opportunity for sizeable bonuses. Grounded in the research-backed premise that, “teacher quality is the most important school-based factor in the academic success of students, particularly those from low-income families,” TEP opened its doors in 2009.

Today, TEP is home to 480 middle-school students, most of whom previously attended public and parochial schools in the Washington Heights neighborhood. Next year, their first 8th grade class will graduate. In a few years, pending an on-going fundraising campaign, they will have a school building to call their own. In the meantime, they’re using what they’ve got.

Classes are held in temporary structures and students walk from trailer to trailer depending on their class schedule. As David Weinreb, TEP’s Business Manager, describes, “There are a lot of things that are aesthetically jarring about being here. It’s super important for us to spend time and energy and money and effort into making our classroom space incredible, homey, warm, interesting and interactive.” Which is exactly what they’ve done. A 5th grader told us, “Teachers are super nice, in the way they teach. When I’m having a problem, I know I can tell them. In two months, they have gained my trust.” The NYC Department of Education also sang TEP’s praises. According to their DOE School Survey, TEP placed within the top 1% of all NYC Middle Schools for Learning Environment.

Anything involving classroom design is left to TEP’s teachers. Each educational tool, accessory and yes, coat of paint, comes after careful consideration. Adding IdeaPaint in two classrooms, one music room and one math classroom (both on the back wall) has helped maximize space, allowing for more students to get up, participate and engage with the material. It has not only contributed to more productive lessons, but emphasized the core of TEP’s philosophy.

“Everything that is put in the classroom is a demonstration to the students that they matter to us, that their education matters to us.” This is something the students have responded to. Attendance at TEP is 96%, which far outshines other schools in the neighborhood. We are thrilled to have been included in their classrooms and cannot wait to see where TEP goes next.

To learn more about TEP, take a look at their website. That’s just how we met Shannon Martin, Director of Communications for EasyLiving, Inc. and Aging Wisely, LLC, two care management services for seniors located in sunny Clearwater, Florida. Thanks to her, we were able to see how IdeaPaint has helped improve the lives of numerous patients.

Last August, they installed IdeaPaint in their new office building, which they share with fellow care providers, EZFingerprints, LLC. Between the three companies, the IdeaPaint gets a lot of attention and is used is various ways, including as a menu for a PB&J sandwich bar during staff orientation (see photo below). It is most heavily used, however, during employee training.

As Shannon explains, the company’s greatest investment is in their staff. “Employee development has been a huge focus at EasyLiving, which is somewhat unique in the home healthcare industry. We use behavioral interviewing, require a higher score on the home health aide test, etc.; and then we focus on a more intense training program than is typical because we feel our front line employees must be prepared to do the best job for the client."

Training and continued education courses happen in-house in the room where IdeaPaint is featured. EasyLiving and Aging Wisely have a highly specialized and diverse staff that leads training sessions to educate colleagues on unique issues. For example, there is a Certified Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders trainer on staff who is available to help answer specific questions about providing care for someone with dementia. Guest trainers and staff members teach lessons in which IdeaPaint is thoroughly integrated.

“The IdeaPaint wall has been great for these trainings, brainstorming and planning. Since we have such a mobile workforce (caregivers and care managers typically travel off site to visit their elder clients), it is imperative to find ways to engage everyone and make them feel part of the team.”

For their efforts, their staff has received numerous designations and awards in their field. Last year, EasyLiving was named a Top Small Business in the South and Aging Wisely won a National Patient Advocacy Award.

It is rewarding to see IdeaPaint play a small but instrumental role in the training that leads to exceptional care. Thank you, Shannon, for sharing!

Clad in a Drew Brees Saint’s jersey, Ty Nguyen looks cool and comfortable amongst his middle school art and journalism students. Their diagrams and notes cover every surface in his classroom, from the desks to the walls. Nguyen teaches art and oversees the production of the school’s yearbook at the Killian Middle School in Lewisville, Texas.

Killian is not like most middle schools. Glance into any classroom and you’ll see students listening to iPods and typing away on tablets and laptops. As Nguyen explains, “Technology is fully incorporated into the curriculum.” Students enjoy the freedom of learning as they choose, on whatever device they prefer, thanks to Killian’s BYOT (that’s Bring Your Own Technology) initiative. More often that not, students are tuned in, and while one might think it could inhibit sharing and collaboration, Ty's unique learning environment proves the contrary.

“We were able to totally revamp our classroom into this really magical environment where everyone can collaborate wherever without constraints,” says Ty. IdeaPaint has helped create a more collaborative, social learning environment by giving his students physical space where their ideas can thrive. While many begin on a screen, they develop and expand in an organic way with the input of classmates on IdeaPaint surfaces.

Layouts for this year’s yearbook cover the wall, as do checklists for what needs doing and what has been finished. It’s evident that Mr. Nguyen has tapped into his students’ most creative and productive sides by bridging the hi-tech and the low. With the end of the school year fast approaching, we can’t wait to see their final product.

A single coat of paint can change the way your students learn and interact with each other and their ideas.
IdeaPaint is a creative company filled with creative people. We're a diverse crew of entreprenuers, chemists, designers, writers and number crunchers who've clocked in at different companies in different industries. Our previous experiences, areas of expertise and eclectic interests have quietly informed our work here at IdeaPaint, until now, when they've found new life. We’ve found a way to share our sources of inspiration and be further inspired by others with, you guessed it, Pinterest.

I know, I know ... there's a whole lot of Pinterest banter going on. But we can't lie, we’ve jumped on the Pinterest bandwagon and are hooked. Line and sinker.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Pinterest is the latest platform for social sharing. On its most basic level it is an online pinboard. An account provides you with a board, multiple if you so choose, on which to pin images and allow fellow pinners to comment and repin your content to their personal boards. We are still in the exploratory stages, but we already love Pinterest. Here are a couple reasons why.

• It lets us introduce our team and their unique interests to you.

Did you know that IdeaPainter Melanie refurbishes old furniture or that Tim is in the process of renovating a 100 year old house. It's true! Through Pinterest, we all get a chance to see what they're considering for next projects, where they're finding inspiration, and how much progress they've made. Pretty exciting!

• It inspires us.

We say it alot, and firmly believe it, you never know where the next big idea will come from. Looking at photos and reading Pinners' comments lets our mind wander a bit, our ideas develop and be influenced by other people in our community's tastes and interests. Like, how awesome is this clock? Really awesome.

• It lets us acknowledge stuff we think is cool.

We always wanted to paint the Green Monster with IdeaPaint. How likely that is, is a different question. Using Pinterest we can create a board, pin a photo and cross our fingers. We can also curate a collection of things we like, kitchens, toys, fonts, colors, etc. Pinterest is like a department store, musuem hybrid where you can take what you want for your own small store. (Responsibly, of course.) It's the best.

We've created a few boards already and would love to see what you're pinning. Leave us your username so we can follow you! And if you're curious about how IdeaPaint is being used around the world, what we like, or where we'd put IdeaPaint if we wrote the rules, follow us here. Happy pinning!

[DIGGBUTTON]

Every day we check our Facebook page to see what you all are up to and what questions you may have about IdeaPaint. It gives us the opportunity to keep you updated on all things IdeaPaint and lets us know how and where IdeaPaint is being used in the world. It's really quite nice.

Of course, we also take note of our growing Facebook community, and last time we checked we were getting awfully close to 13,000. As we near this milestone, we took the time to revisit some old favorites: great photos, encouraging comments, and makeover videos that remind us how fun IdeaPaint can be. We compiled them here, in a buffet of moments (if you will) that reflect the community you all play a part in creating.

Enough fanfare; here are 8 of IdeaPaint's latest and greatest Facebook moments:

1. An IdeaPaint enthusiast and cartoonist shared this awesome video with us!

2. Our friends in Hood River, Oregon inspired us with this Shel Silverstein quote.

3. Mike from Eisenhower High School shared how he's using IdeaPaint and Evernote to create a unique and exciting learning environment for his students.

4. We heard from some creative bakers in Kuwait!

5. And received a photo of this awesome mural from friends in Mexico.

6. Facebook fans penned their best 11-word poems on 11/11/11.

It was hard to choose a winner. But we did: "Boundless thoughts are scribed / walls, floor, desks, more, / wherever IdeaPaint imbibed."

7. The NYC iSchool students documented their winning moment!

8. On Christmas Eve, one of our youngest fans was very clear with Santa. Talk about communication!

Think we're missing any? Chime in via the comment section below. We just might add yours when we hit 14,000.
In our last post, a recap of 2011, we took a look at a handful of the businesses who have used IdeaPaint to make their work spaces work. IdeaPaint is on the walls and tables of start-ups who are still working out the kinks of their first great idea. It's on the hallways and in the conference rooms of established industry names who are brainstorming next season's best seller. It's pretty simple. IdeaPaint works.

Just yesterday we received this nice write-up from Top Draw, a marketing agency in Edmonton, who writes: "Without the pressures of being neat or tidy within a tiny sketchbook, it’s liberating to let ideas emerge like a stream of consciousness." We've said it before, and the companies we work with can attest as well that IdeaPaint makes work feel less like work.

We have a bunch of exciting announcements coming up in the weeks and months ahead --- but before we let you in on all of our secrets for 2012, let's take a look back at all the people we met and places we saw in 2011!

Our New Favorite.

Back in August, Evernote acquired an awesome company called Skitch that now has Evernote integration and an incredible new iPad app. Skitch lets you draw or type on a photo or screenshot, and then share that new image or sync with Evernote. It's fast, simple and very cool.

Our affinity for Evernote is pretty well documented (remember the sweet custom iPad giveaway last year?). Evernote is an application that lets individuals save and find their notes, images, projects, links and research across all the computers and phones they use. Chances are, if you can see it or think of it, Evernote can help you remember it. Type a text note. Clip a web page. Snap a photo. Grab a screenshot. Evernote will keep it all safe, and is infinitely useful.

One of the more amazing things about Evernote's technology is that it makes your handwritten text searchable (no, seriously). For our customers, this is an amazing way to organize and filter IdeaPaint brainstorming sessions. Have a killer brainstorm, take a picture of the wall and sync with Evernote. Then, you can search for the image based on what you wrote on the wall, and continue the collaboration by adding notes and sharing with others.

Well, Evernote's acquisition of Skitch just made things a whole lot cooler. Now, not only can you organize, store and share your IdeaPaint work, but you can add to it. Skitch's iPad app makes it simple to add type or handwritten notes to an image, use shapes to highlight key areas and more. It's simple to use, and they even smooth out your handwriting! With one click you can share your new image via email or Twitter, or upload to Evernote.

We've been working (and playing) with Skitch a lot over the past couple of weeks, usually with an iPad stylus, and it's quickly becoming an office favorite.

While we're at it, we'd like to shout-out a similarly awesome iPad app, Penultimate. Lots of the same features as Skitch. Evernote integration isn't one-touch, but it is simple enough to save your image and then upload to Evernote later. The handwriting tool on Penultimate is flawless (unlike my penmanship) ---- super smooth and intuitive.

With Evernote, Skitch and Penultimate we are seeing a range of technology solutions that let you take your IdeaPaint sessions off the wall, and continue your brainstorm when and where you choose. Nothing takes the place of live real-time interaction, but these tools can go a long way towards helping you and your colleagues collaborate effectively, and stay organized.

[DIGGBUTTON]

Catz in Hingham is not your typical gym. There are no floor to ceiling mirrors, no TVs broadcasting reality shows, and no people idly flipping through magazines. Instead, from sun up to sun down, there is a constant influx of people ready to work. It was evident upon our first visit that Catz is all walk, no talk.

Training programs and classes are led by a team of knowledgeable and energetic trainers, including Tyler and Todd (who you'll meet in the Makeover video). More than just tucking and tightening, their committed to helping those interested in improving their athletic abilities develop a competitive edge. A read through of some of the customer testimonials gives an interested athlete an idea of the range of athletes they train. As Todd says, "We had a group of moms and dads in here, and then right after we had three year olds. That is very rare in the fitness world." In any one day, you'll see elementary school classes, highschool sports teams, boot camps full of 9-5ers, and professional athletes walk through Catz' door to train with the common goal of physical fitness and personal wellness in common.

Before we sent Keith to get their makeover started, we sent IdeaPaint CMO, Marcus Wilson for a surprise visit. Of course, we took a camera with us. To get an idea of what a Catz workout is like, check out how Marcus holds up in one of Tyler's classes.

As you can see, the Catz facility in Hingham is spacious. Large sections of wall outline communal areas where classes are taught and entire teams frequently train. To further strengthen the community that Catz has created, we decided, with the help of Todd and Tyler, that providing a place for members to post messages, personal goals, and inspirational quotes was ideal. At the same time, we created spaces for the trainers to list workouts for the day, track trainees' progress and stay organized in the office. With such a high volume of gym-goers, making workouts as efficient and seamless as possible was a priority.

With IdeaPaint in various strategic locations throughout their facility, we think Catz is poised for even more well-documented success and, we imagine, friendly competition.

If you're feeling inspired to get in shape, check out the Catz website to find a facility near you.
As we learned while reviewing entries for the first round of the IdeaPaint360 Makeover Contest, many of the most innovative schools in the country see something special in IdeaPaint™. One such school reflects its innovative spirit right down to the spelling of its name. Drawing inspiration from Apple's revolutionary "i" products, the NYC iSchool, located in SoHo, Manhattan opened in 2008 and has since created quite a buzz as a stand out model for progressive education.

We first met NYC iSchool seniors Alexis and Celina in their submission video. Impressed by students nominating their own school, we were eager to hear their reasoning. Keith made the trip down to New York to catch up with them and to find out how Alexis and Celina envisioned IdeaPaint enhancing their already advanced learning environment.

To start, the NYC iSchool is growing! Both Alexis and Celina are part of the founding class, and will be part of the first class to graduate. Their grade (of 100 students) has witnessed the school expand to accommodate new grades and more students. Their biggest qualm: the lack of personal relationships between students of different grades. While the high-tech ideology grants each student a lot freedom (they can complete work online or from home), it seems that in the fast lane, concessions have been made elsewhere. That's why they called on us. Alexis and Celina wanted to feel more connected to their classmates. In a computer world, they wanted spaces to communicate, not over a screen, but face to face with their peers. They wanted more places for people to come together. What better place to do that than the equivalent of a high school highway - the halls.

Watch as Keith takes these young leaders on a tour through their newly painted school. We think it was so successful we're considering a name change. How does iDeaPaint look to you? :)

Tucked away in North Andover, surrounded by picturesque New England landscapes, you'll find the Brooks School. Home to 370 students, the majority of whom board, the Brooks Schools is an independent co-ed, college prep school for students grades 9-12. Last month, we paid a visit to check out the latest addition to their impressive facility.

Our first stop was Doug Burbank's classroom where the marquee wall (21' x 11') is freshly covered in IdeaPaint. After seeing IdeaPaint in the Google offices while visiting a former student this past summer, Mr. Burbank decided it was something he needed. He believed, in fact, that it could be a transformative educational tool when it came to teaching math. Within minutes of being in his classroom, it was clear to us that he was right. On his floor to ceiling ladder, Mr. Burbank reminds the casual observer of a character from Harry Potter as he zips along, scribbling functions as he goes. His students have bought into math if not just as something manageable, but magical.

Also on board with Mr. Burbank's plan to make math more accessible was Kihak Nam, Burbank's fellow math department colleague (and former advisee). Instead of painting the walls, however, he painted his desks. The day we visited, his students raced to answer questions in hopes of earning coveted points for an upcoming test.

Admittedly, math is not the frontrunner for favorite subject at most schools, but the duo of Burbank and Nam have amassed a following of converts. Students from both classes expressed the ease with which the IdeaPaint surfaces have been incorporated into everyday lessons. For visual learners, it makes understanding the steps of any given problem easier. For those with creative instincts, it makes math more fun - which is just what Burbank was hoping for. Whether they choose to demonstrate their interest in math in the classroom, in the Math Hallway, as a member of the Math Team or in a visit to Mr. Nam's home study (where there is also IdeaPaint), students have made meaningful connections to a subject that is often passed over in high school and forgotten about in higher education.

Guided by Brooks' mission of providing the most meaningful education in a student's life, Burbank and Nam have started with math. We hear rumors that the English department wants to implement similar measures. Soon, hallways at Brooks will have sonnets and poems to accompany graphs and functions. Sounds like the perfect solution to us.

Many thanks to Emily Young for making this happen and for walking us through all the unfamiliar hallways!

And now, for the news you've all been waiting for … the winners of Round 2 of the IdeaPaint360 Makeover Contest.

First up, the Egremont Elementary School, in Pittsfield MA, which had 4,242 votes!

Next, from Kinnelon, NJ, Mrs. Levitt's 1st grade classroom at the Kiel School, which had 2,575 votes!

Both finalists have won a one-of-a-kind 500 sq. ft. IdeaPaint installation, a consultation with the one-and-only Keith Whittier, a video documenting the process, and, of course, the continued awesomeness of IdeaPaint in their space.

Before we get to their contest entries, we'd like to thank our 10 amazing finalists, everyone who entered in either round, and all of you who voted! During the first round of this contest a few months ago we could sense the momentum building. We saw the buzz on our social media channels and were convinced that the second round would be even better. We decided to add the element of public voting, and that made all the difference. Our finalists received 10,000 votes from people around the country! It was exciting for us, and we hope just as exciting for all of you who participated, to see each entry call upon their community for support and for those communities to respond the way they did.

So, thanks!

You can expect similar contests in the future because these last two were so successful.

As for our winners, having two schools come out on top was a special treat. We hope to make Mrs. Levitt's class ("one of the greatest places to be") even greater by helping them figure out ways to maximize their space, to make handwriting and math fun, and, to restore indoor recess' cool factor. Room 201, here we come!

We're just as excited to meet the students at the Egremont Elementary School. Their library - a place where so many great ideas already exist - is a perfect place to create space for engagement and dialogue. Their students, some of whom you meet in their video, are ready to see how their big ideas fit into the grand scheme of things. We can't wait to help out.

Makeovers will be underway this winter. As always, we'll keep you posted here on the blog, and via Facebook and Twitter. If you'd like to learn more about how IdeaPaint has transformed schools all over the country, read on.

[DIGGBUTTON]

More and more frequently we've been receiving posts, Tweets and emails from people sharing their recent IdeaPaint installations. From offices and schools nearby, to businesses in other hemispheres, IdeaPaint is making its way, wall by wall, around the world.

One such business is BrainSell, a business solutions company headquartered in Topsfield, MA. We saw their blog article about their IdeaPaint installation (you can read it here) and had to learn more. We caught up with BrainSell's Director of Marketing and Business Development, Sonja Fridell to find out the story behind their decision to go the way of the Paint.

IdeaPaint: How did you hear about us?
Sonja: We were at our partner Hubspot's office in Cambridge and were admiring their walls. They told us all about IdeaPaint and we were immediately sold!

IdeaPaint: We love this part of your mission statement: "Dedicated to helping businesses grow, create a delighted customer base and achieve grand success." How do you achieve this day to day with your clients? How can IdeaPaint help?
Sonja: We do well when we keep things top of mind. Especially when it comes to marketing. So having a 20x7' wall screaming marketing ideas at me encourages me to take action and get things done. Our customers love our weekly webinars and blog articles and the "idea wall" keeps my brainstorming in check.

IdeaPaint: What was the first thing written on the IdeaPaint wall?
Sonja: Haha, it was BrainSell (heart's) IdeaPaint. Did that so we could brag about it on our blog!

IdeaPaint: The funniest? Any pranks?
We draw characitures of our boss, Jimmie BrainSell all the time. He loves it because he's a strapping man in a super hero suit! Also, we always sneak in lines about Casey Anthony. "Q3 Sales: Casey Anthony, 100 licenses" or "Casey Anthony called" We're a very unique group over here (-=

IdeaPaint: If you could paint IdeaPaint anywhere, where would it be?
Sonja: In my kitchen! I love it when friends leave me notes on my very small chalk board. An IdeaPaint wall would be great for that and notes on what to pick up at the store too.

IdeaPaint: What is your dream team of innovative tools (as in similar products)?
Sonja: GoPro Cameras are awesome. They have really innovative social marketing, so I'd include them in anything I'd do that was super human. I also love the new colors and patterns of duct tape (-=

IdeaPaint: How has IdeaPaint helped BrainSell (facilitated brainstorming, increased camaraderie, encouraged doodling, etc)?
Sonja: We collaborate like mad. People put ideas on the board, and we add to them, point to them, star them. We have a sales thermometer up right now on our smaller new wall, we fill it in when we make end of year sales, like a fundraiser. It's very motivating!

IdeaPaint: You tweeted about waiting for the IdeaPaint wall to cure. Describe the anticipation! And then, the fun!
Sonja: Yes, waiting a week was tough. A few times I had to scream at my coworkers to PUT DOWN THE MARKER! But it paid off, we have two great walls now, and they're FULL!

Ahh, another IdeaPaint success story! Our sincere thanks to Sonja for sharing. You can learn more about BrainSell online at www.brainsell.net, and stay up-to-date with Sonja on their Facebook and Twitter.

If you'd like to share your IdeaPaint story, shout an electonic holler at talk2@ideapaint.com.

[DIGGBUTTON]

You decide our IdeaPaint360 winners!

As you may know, the second round of the IdeaPaint360 Makeover is slightly different than the first. This time, we chose a pool of 10 finalists from which 2 winners will be selected to win the grand prize. Who those two winners will be, however, is not up to us; it's up to you! The two videos with the most votes through Sunday, December 4th will win!

Once you watch the videos, we think you'll agree that this group of finalists is very diverse. You'll meet (among others) the art director for an advertising agency with an office pet named Sammy the Shark; the team of developers, therapists and consultants at a gaming company that focuses on physical and cognitive therapy; and a group of youngsters excited at the possibility of fun indoor recess. There's sure to be an interesting space and inspiring story that will catch your eye.

You can watch all of the videos and vote for your favorite here!

A couple of guidelines to keep in mind: (a) you may vote once per day, and (b) in order for your votes to count, they must be received by 11:59pm EST on Sunday, December 4th 2011. On Monday, December 5th 2011 at 3pm EST, we will announce our winners.

Thanks for the support and don't forget to spread the word!

[DIGGBUTTON]
