Hot Blue Ternate Tea

Ingredients
1 cup hot water
10 fresh or dried Blue Ternate flowers
*you can also add lime, dried lemon grass, honey or sugar for those who love sweet tea, ginger and cinnamon as an additional flavoring but this is optional.

Procedure
First, put your fresh or dried Blue Ternate flowers on a cup of hot water. Then steep it for around 10 to 15 minutes. Let it steep until the blue color of the flowers dissipates into the water. When the water starts to turn blue you can now strain it to remove the flowers. If you want a little twist in your hot Blue Tea you can add any of those mentioned above like lime juice, honey or sugar. Now you can enjoy your Homemade Hot Blue Tea.

Blue Ternate Iced Tea

For those who love Iced tea, make sure to add this recipe in your list.

Ingredients
1 cup hot water
10 fresh or dried Blue Ternate flowers
Ice cubes
*you can also add lime, dried lemon grass, honey or sugar for those who love sweet tea, ginger and cinnamon as an additional flavoring but this is optional.

Procedure
First, put your fresh or dried Blue Ternate flowers on a cup of hot water. Then steep it for around 10 to 15 minutes. Let it steep until the blue color of the flowers dissipates into the water. When the water starts to turn blue you can now strain it to remove the flowers. You can add dried lemon grass, cinnamon or any of those mentioned above. But personally, I recommend you to add lime juice and honey. If lime juice and honey are not available in your home you can use kalamansi and sugar instead. Then mix it well. After adding lime/kalamansi juice the blue color will turn into purple. The amount of lime juice depends on your preference. But for me I like adding half or a tablespoon of lime juice for every cup of Blue Ternate iced tea. Now it’s time to add some ice cubes. This recipe is ideal for summer outings, special gatherings and as refreshment to cool down your busy brain.

Blue Ternate and its origin

Known for its butterfly-shaped, vibrant blue flowers, Blue Ternate (Clitoria ternatea) has been utilized for centuries in Southeast Asian countries for its medicinal properties. Surprisingly this famed plant does not belong to the tea family or the Theaceae but to the family of legumes called Fabaceae (or also known as Leguminosae). Some call it Blue-pea, Cordofan Pea, Asian Pigeon Wings, Butterfly Pea and Blue Bell Vine. It is used as an herbal concoction and as a vegetable for cooking Asian traditional dishes.

Even before I started drinking Blue Ternate tea, I knew that its flowers are edible because I saw it a few times in some dishes like vegetable salads, steamed rice meals and ice cream mixes. Well I thought it was just some sort of decoration and coloring material for food, but I was wrong.

My Blue Ternate journey

            When I was in college, I used to consume loads of caffeine and sweets just to meet the demands of my hectic schedule. As a result, aside from being stressed, I began having sleeping problems too. We really enjoyed the dinner, and especially the program, some parts of it are the usual cake cutting and wine drinking. The idea about serenading the guests while they troop to the money jars was a good one since the groom can play the guitar. I don’t know if you have experienced this, but in those few moments before I wake up, I hear some unique melodies, with or without lyrics, oftentimes sung by one or more persons, or played by an instrument or more. What’s interesting is that they were intensely present in my dreams, in my subconscious mind, and how they instantly stop and leave me as I wake up. I know this sounds like wishful thinking, but maybe if I’m just a composer I would have arranged these sounds from my subconscious and make them into a real song. Then, it would be fun to modify and tweak the song with sound effects from a monotron or synthesizer, or develop it creatively with a production software. The possibilities are endless while I’m dreaming about this. LOL.

Our mind is truly such a wonderful part of us, so amazingly powerful is its potential to do things beyond what we limit ourselves to be.
