However there is a more positive way of looking at it; RDR provides an opportunity for proactive firms to gain an advantage over their competitors. Here we provide our guide to getting ahead in the post-RDR world: both for companies and individuals.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;1. Flight to quality providers&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The move to higher professional standards was badly needed in the industry, which has lost credibility in recent years. The Association of British Insurers found that two-thirds of people thought financial advice on pensions, savings and investments was worthless.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The new focus on the consumer means clients can trust qualified advisers to give truly independent advice. There will be a sharp distinction between IFAs and advisers only allowed to offer a limited range of products and providers. This will mean a flight to quality providers who make services transparent.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Individual IFAs need to take responsibility for attaining their qualifications. Companies will not carry people and passing the exams requires drive and determination.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;2. Advantages of the new pay structure&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There is an argument that the switch to charging consumers an up-front fee means only high net-worth individuals will seek financial advice.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But RDR also brings an opportunity to create new pricing policies with broader value-for-money appeal. A lot of fund managers have anticipated RDR by introducing commission-free fund share classes. Savvy firms will continue serving less wealthy clients by developing execution-only services alongside their full advice offer.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If your company is still scrabbling around to pull together a fee-based proposition, you should seriously consider moving to a company which is ready and sailing in the right direction. &lt;h2&gt;3. Developing a strategic focus&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The famous phrase &amp;ldquo;If you fail to plan, you plan to fail&amp;rdquo; applies perfectly to RDR. Companies need strategies based on close analysis of all the opportunities and threats it poses.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;First, firms have to be clear about where they offer added value and then use that insight to make long-term plans. The best firms will focus on innovation and finding alternative ways to serve average consumers.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Second, firms must ensure they communicate the advantages of their services and remuneration models in the clearest way possible. The key to surviving in the post-RDR world is to embrace the spirit of transparency for the consumer.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Third, company bosses will play a major role in developing a visionary strategy. They need a clear-headed assessment of both their own and their competitors&amp;rsquo; strengths. An ability to implement complex long-term strategies will help companies stand out in a crowded market.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Finally, changes should be made with all possible haste. The best firms are preparing rigorously for RDR and will hit the ground running on January 1st, 2013.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That has slowly changed in the past decade, and now a career as an Independent Financial Advisor is being placed alongside accountancy in terms of professionalism.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;RDR will further enhance that reputation and boost the talent pool as more graduates look to take level four qualifications at university that will allow them to kick-start their careers straight after graduating.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Many students are also opting for higher qualifications than those required by RDR. It is becoming more and more usual for graduates to hold level six qualifications such as the Chartered Financial Planner qualification, issued by the Chartered Insurance Institute, or the Certified Financial Planner qualification, issued by the Institute of Financial Planning.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There are lots of ways for graduates to start a rewarding career in financial services, either as an Administrator, as a trainee Paraplanner or trainee Advisor, safe in the knowledge that they are working with fellow professionals. Financial Advisors are no longer seen as the poorer relation to accountants and solicitors and are now found working alongside them to deliver holistic financial and life planning to consumers.&lt;/p&gt;

The biggest western firms usually have offices in China, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. A broker based in Singapore, which is a regional hub for Asia Pacific, could do business in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea and Malaysia.&lt;/p&gt;

Both can enhance your career as you will develop specialist knowledge and skills, as well as learn to become more flexible in different working conditions. &lt;li&gt;In a job interview, a candidate was asked: &amp;ldquo;When can you start in the role?&amp;rdquo; They answered: &amp;ldquo;I&amp;rsquo;ll need to check with my mum&amp;rdquo;.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;img id="img-1335358815500" src="http://blog.idexconsulting.com/Portals/134216/images/What-you-need-to-know-about-RDR-now-info-graphic.jpg" border="0" alt="Nobody said it was going to be easy. It can be a daunting task to confront the complex new regulations of the Retail Distribution Review (RDR), which comes into effect from January 1st 2013. Most advisers have some idea of what it all means, but the number of new rules makes it hard to grasp the full picture. Here is our simple guide to what you need to know - now.

1. What are the RDR rules in a nutshell?

At the moment, advisers need Level 3 awards, such as the Financial Planning Certificate (FPC). However, from January 1st, they will require a Level 4 Diploma, which is the equivalent of the first year of a degree.

To create a level playing field, the Financial Services Skills Council has carefully defined new Appropriate Exam Standards (AES), which determine what must be known by advisers on packaged products.

The new Level 4 qualifications must cover the following: Regulation and Ethics; Investment Principles and Risk; Personal Taxation; Pensions and Retirement Planning; Financial Protection (Level 3); and Financial Planning Practice.

To be fair to students of existing Level 4 qualifications, the Financial Service Authority says they will not need to sit new exams, but they may require &amp;lsquo;qualification gap-fill&amp;rsquo;.

2. How does it affect me?

Existing advisers fall into three categories: first, those who already have Level 4 qualifications, or above. They will not need to worry about passing further exams, but may require some &amp;lsquo;qualification gap-fill&amp;rsquo;.

The second category is current students of Level 4, or above, qualifications. They have to complete their exams in order to be qualified, and may also require some &amp;lsquo;qualification gap-fill&amp;rsquo;.

Finally, there are advisers in neither of these two categories. They have to pass all their Level 4 exams, or they cannot advise on packaged products.

IFAs need to take responsibility for their own qualifications. So start today: order the revision book, make a revision plan and book the first exam.

3. Does everyone have the same January 1st deadline?

There are actually three deadlines for three different groups of advisers.

First, existing advisers who were qualified by June 30th, 2009, must meet all RDR qualification requirements by the December 31st deadline.

Second, existing advisers who qualified after June 30th, 2009, but before January 1st, 2011, do not have to comply with the December 31st deadline. These advisers have an extra 30 months to complete an appropriate Level 4 qualification. Their deadline is, therefore, June 30th, 2013.

The third group is made up of new, or trainee, advisers, who have become competent after January 1st 2011. These advisers have 30 months to complete a relevant appropriate Level 4 qualification from when they start the relevant activity.

4. What is &amp;lsquo;qualification gap-fill&amp;rsquo;?

An adviser with an existing Level 4 qualification does not need higher examinations, but may need to fill in gaps in their knowledge to meet the new standards. This can be done through a programme of structured Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The adviser must keep a record of their gap-fill development programme. This should include the gap-fill outcome and a description of how the learning activities have given them the knowledge they need.

CPD assignments carried out in the past can also be used towards gap-filling, as long as they were structured and met the learning outcomes in the gap-fill template.

5. How will RDR affect payment to advisers?

One of the cornerstones of the new RDR rules is a ban on commission and the introduction of adviser charges.

From December 31st, any firm making a recommendation in the UK to a retail client to invest in a retail investment product will no longer earn commission set by the product provider. The firm will instead be paid an adviser charge agreed with the client in advance.

Firms will have to work out a charging structure for calculating the adviser charge. It could be based on a fixed fee, hourly rate, or percentage of funds invested. However, it should be in the client&amp;rsquo;s best interests.
