recommendations for tunes with TASTEFUL vocals

Hi all,

I've recently been trying to hunt down some good drum and bass and other idm tunes with vocal leads, but have really fallen up short in my hunt. Unsurprisingly, most every vocal dnb or breaks track is just horrid. The vocals are all shamelessly cheesy, and the instrumental parts all seem to just get blander and blander the more I search.

I've had a lot of good luck lurking other people's recommendation threads around here, so I was wondering if anyone had any good vocal dnb or idm/breaks tunes that they've been listening to lately.

For a point of reference, the second half of Tim Exile's Family Galaxy, while not strictly drum and bass, is probably closest to what I'm actually looking for, though it not necessarily as blatantly progged out as that song.

I dont know which daw is proper for me to learn.

Ableton: fun fx chain, lame osc, sound quality lowest of these 3 (imho)
Reason: versatile especially with the samplers, sound quality is medium
Reaktor: galacticly smooth sound, but does it have mixing/EQ or do you use another program.

I know this has been beaten to death. I've read the similar threads so please spare me!

I've been using Pro Tools 7.4 and Reason 4 for a while, but got a new Macbook Pro, so I want a more portable DAW (Logic/Ableton). I'm a lite Producer!! Mainly a guitarist, do session work and play live a lot (R&B, jazz, pop, sometimes metal!). Want to separate myself from the run-of-the-mill guitar players though in town.

Have played with Garageband and Ableton demo. Haven't invested much time into them, but I like what both do so far.

Here are my main questions, so that hopefully someone can help me, as I can only afford one or the other at the moment:

1. I got Pro Tools 7.4, and very well might upgrade to 8 for the $150. I like the audio editing on it. Heard that PT8 ripped off Logic... is this a good thing? Would Logic now be redundant?

2. Planning on getting Komplete 5 since it's $400. I've heard bad things about its PT compatibility. Which program prefers Komplete, Ableton or Live?

3. Would like to use Mainstage or Live for live purposes when playing guitar... as a looper, and possibly for some filter/eq/phaser/strange effects that guitar usually doesn't have. Which would be better?

4. I use MIDI Synth Guitar technology. Bit of a stretch, but anyone know if Logic's synths trigger decently with Axon AX-100 or Roland GM-70? I know Garageband ain't bad at all. Kind of related to 3...would it be reliable to trigger synth patches of Mainstage/Live in a live setting?

5. Are Ableton's full range of studio effects/plug-ins better/same/worse than Logic's?

Hey guys,

I'm almost 20 so it's about time I moved out. However I'm freaked about one thing.

Being able to make music of decent volume.

How many of you live in apartments? I have the preconceived notion that every slightly noisy sound will be heard by your neighbours, people above and below you lol

I could also live in a basement suite, but same deal, might piss off your landlords.

Is it as bad as I'm thinking? I really don't wanna swap to headphones because I spent so much on these monitors, it'd be such a waste.

I'm not the kind of person that blares music 24/7. But sometimes I like to turn it up a little more and I think those kicks could be heard outside the room. It's even worse that my most productive time is when I'm half asleep :( around 12:30

Software Synth vs. Hardware Synth?

Is there really much of a difference? I've been using a hardware synth (korg radias), but as I'm going to college and will have limited space I've been thinking about selling it and just using software synth's with a more size efficient midi controller. What does everyone think?

Anybody ever see this show? Its by the co-creator of Seinfeld, Larry David (who plays in the show), and it is fucking great. He manages to make so many awkward situations, and carry on a joke for minutes while still being hilarious. I do admit, it has quite a bit of race, sex, and expletives that it relies on for its humour, but for once, that doesn't bother me because Larry manages to make it all work and be hilarious anyway.

They lie rigidly face-down on rooftops, postboxes, luggage racks and even in the engine of a jumbo jet.
It's the latest and perhaps the most bizarre internet phenomenon yet to sweep the globe.
Several Facebook groups set up in honour of 'the Lying Down Game' display thousands of photographs of people lying face-down in progressively odder locations.

It seems no location is out of bounds, with people lying down roofs, in the middle of the road, in front of tanks, across bars in pubs and on table football games.
Participants are told there are two aims to the challenge; that the lying down should be as public as possible and that as many people as possible should be involved.
Players are told they must have their palms flat against their sides with the tips of their toes touching the ground.

It seems it may have been sparked by one British group of friends who grew bored with posing for the usual holiday photographs.
Newcastle doormen Scott Wood and Wayne Pyle set up a Facebook page after a trip to Majorca.
Mr Wood, 34, said: 'I started doing it when I was on a lads' holiday in Magaluf. I thought lying on the floor would be a funnier way to pose for my holiday snaps.'

He added: 'We want people to find the most random places they can - the weirder the better.
'There's so much misery around these days, with the recession and everything - this is an excuse to have a joke and do something silly.'
Fan Danielle Mitchell, 23, from Newcastle, said the so-called game had become a hit with her own circle of friends.

using a novation nocturn in linux??

hi

i got a linux partition on my music machine,but i dont use it much lately because i cant get the novation nocturn controller working.

i can install automap and all under fine,and the plugs run as they are supposed too,but the problem is with the hardware controller.

i cant get it to respond under linux??

wondering if anyone has gotten it to work??

as thats the only reason why i still use win xp,if i could get it working i would use linux on both my audio machine and my laptop:(

Techno - Paul Beynon - Little Red Car - Volume 1

So my lady has been hassling me for months to give her some CD's for her car; and even though I'm firmly opposed to the idea of audio CD's for anything other than mixing, I've finally bitten the bullet and put together volume one for her little red car. It's got a bit more grunt than her little 97 Nissan Pulsar, with 18 tracks of some of my favourite techy sounds of the moment and just a few that my lady might actually enjoy as well.

In other news, Darius Bassiray have just seen the release of Jeebuzz Champ on Dieb Audio in the coming weeks. We've had very healthy feedback from people so far and we're hoping it's going to be a great release. Darius recently finished work on his track "El Camino" which I believe is his most interesting solo work to date. He's presented a more mature sound with this one and I think that "El Camino" is definitely going to be one that you'll want to keep an ear out for in the coming months. He's been good enough to let me do my own mix which is coming along nicely, and I'm very excited to see what happens with it.

I've started working on a few more solo projects in the past few months as well, so hopefully I'll have another Work in Progress for you guys later in the year. I've also been working on a lot of mix projects and I've finally gotten around to laying down the foundations for Mashed Version Two. I'll be working solidly on that over the coming months. Mashed Version 1 was a concept piece which came about when I started getting into the habit of heavily editing the tracks that I was playing. I decided to take it one step further and start making techno mash-ups to make the music sound more interesting - at least to me anyway - and once I started with a few tracks it suddenly grew into nearly four hours of seemingly endless layers. I was really happy with Version One and I'm hoping I can set the standards a little higher with Version Two. If you haven't had the chance, I suggest listening to version one to get an idea what to expect.

As I said, I've been working on a number of mix projects at the moment so keep posted for a few more mixes in the coming months.

I've been such a huge fan of that Hard-Bop sound since my dad and I used to go to Jazz shows in the city together. Fond memories.

Maybe it's the distinct lack of sleep I've been experiencing, but at this time, I feel the need to proffess my love of this album. Mr Flashbulb really hit the nail on the head with it, I think.

I'm really swaying towards music with a sort of breakbeat rhythm, but using "real" instruments.
Do you agree with this sentiment, or want it "all real/supa-electronic"?

I would buy the Rocktron banshee, however it's not available locally and I dont feel like ordering online so...

I want to buy the Heil Sound Jim Dunlop HT-1 Talkbox.
I've read thats its weird to set up though.

First of all I plan to just use my synth with it. I have an audio interface (with phantom power if thats important).

I don't understand how this talkbox is set up, as theyre talking about their guitar rig way to set it up needing certain things and how you can't do this or that.

DSI Mopho - my feedback

Well I received my Mopho about 2 weeks ago and was ecstatic when I got it. It sounds great and everything but the software editor, cmon!! The way this thing is set up you literally have to use the software editor to create patches and to top it off the software editor is NOT vst compatible! WTF?! This means if you want to create patches it's a matter of playing a note, turning a knob, playing a note, turning a knob, etc, etc. You can't run this thing inside your DAW. What a pain in the ass! The only true way around this is if you had some glorified midi controller that would control all of the parameters at once. You could also program it with the unit itself but that's even more a pain in the a.

Well, that's my feedback. I returned it and am now using the Circle synth by Future Audio Workshop and it sounds amazing. I honestly think it sounds better and has a more ergonomic interface than the Mopho. Holla

This week we welcome an American techno dj & producer who has been making big waves in the scene lately, Kyle Geiger

Named in DJ Mag as the "breakthrough DJ of 2008" by Adam Beyer, the last year has proven to be nothing short of that title for Kyle Geiger. Within the first year of his premier vinyl release, Kyle has achieved international notoriety, a feat that many never accomplish in their entire career as a DJ/producer. Having played literally all over America, the Indiana-based producer is set to storm the international scene. With two European tours under his belt already, including two performances at the widely touted Berghain, Berlin (Voted by ResidentAdvisor.net as the 1 club in the world), rounded off with a stop at the Dance Valley Festival in Amsterdam summer 2008, Kyle is certainly prepared for the big things 2009 is already promising to bring.

Beyer immediately put Kyle's tracks to the test at the 2007 Winter Music Conference and invited him onboard as a Drumcode artist. With two highly regarded releases on Adam Beyer's Drumcode label, remixes for Droid Recordings, Renovatio and MB Elektronics, and licensed tracks for the legendary Music Man and Harthouse labels' mix compilations, the future is proving to be a very promising place for Kyle Geiger as he continues to take his widely recognized DJ set around the world and to the next level.

Once again Danny Roberts & James Burn will be kicking off proceedings, progressing through the styles of all things house & techno with there hot picks of whats hot in there boxes right now.
