Thibaut Courtois was asked to make one decent second-half save but more danger from the visitors from the other side of the Thames had come when the game was scoreless.

Didier Drogba, a man for so many successful seasons, tested the visitors’ keeper with a powerful free-kick during the first half and he, along with Willian and Branislav Ivanovic came close to doubling the lead in the second half but shot wide.

One goal always looked as if it would be enough however and so it proved. Let the party begin in west London! And around the globe for all other Chelsea fans – wherever you may be!

Men still paying more than women for car insurance

Men are still often paying more for car insurance than women - almost two-and-a-half years after gender equality laws kicked in.

This is not because insurers are flouting the EU rules which ban gender discrimination - rather it is because they usually charge more to cover those in male-dominated jobs than female-dominated ones. In some cases, an individual in a male-dominated job could pay 30pc more for car insurance.

A plasterer or scaffolder for example could easily pay about a tenth more for his car insurance than a nurse or teacher, according to research conducted by this paper in conjunction with the insurance brokers, coverinaclick.ie.

A 38-year-old plasterer from Newbridge, Co Kildare who drives a one-year-old Lexus IS Series 250 (5-door) would pay €594 a year for comprehensive car insurance with AIG, according to quotes obtained by coverinaclick.ie. A scaffolder of the same age and profile would also pay €594. However, a 38-year-old teacher or nurse driving the same car - and with the same profile - would pay €535. A property developer would pay €562 while a bank official (a more gender-neutral and sedentary profession) would pay €516.

"Where an occupation, or group of occupations, has a poorer claims experience, this is reflected in the premium charged," said a spokesman for AIG.

Posing as a consumer, this paper checked some car insurance quotes using the same profiles in each case - apart from occupation. We found that Allianz quoted a 38-year-old Dublin driver of a 2008 Nissan €565 for third-party, fire and theft cover while a nurse was quoted €500. A farmer was quoted €520. The more gender-neutral and sedentary profession of economist was quoted €500.

A plasterer could pay 30pc more for car insurance with Liberty Insurance than a florist would. When contacted by this paper, Liberty said it would charge a 35-year-old Dublin florist €532 for comprehensive car insurance - assuming the florist has a full driving licence and no-claims discount, and drives a 2009 1.4-litre Ford Focus worth about €9,500. Liberty said it would charge a plasterer €686 for the same cover.

"Occupation is one of the many factors we, and other insurers, use in rating car insurance premiums," said a spokesman for Liberty Insurance. "Rates vary depending on individual occupations relative to one another and are based on our claims and statistical analysis."

Most insurers, apart from Aviva, said that occupation is one of the things taken into account when deciding how much to charge an individual for car insurance.

"Some insurers charge more for manual jobs - but it's down to the usage of the car rather than the individual being a male," said Jonathan Hehir, managing director of coverinaclick.ie. "You'll typically pay less for car insurance if you have a sedentary job because the car is being used less."

Many of those in manual jobs, like plasterers, are considered to be a higher risk because they tend to be on the road more - hence, the higher premiums.

Many men will therefore pay more for car insurance than women because of the higher proportion of males in manual jobs.

About 98pc of those working as plasterers are men, according to a recent study by Stephen McDonald, an economist from Newcastle University in Britain.

In Ireland, nine out of 10 of those working in skilled trades - which includes occupations such as plasterers, bricklayers, builders, roofers and farmers - are men while only one in 10 are women, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The same figures show that about 85pc of those working as 'process, plant or machine operatives' - which includes scaffolders, riggers and quarry workers - are men, while only 15pc are women. However, about four out of five of those working in 'caring and leisure jobs' - which includes nurses and teaching assistants - are women while only one in five are men. Teaching is another female-dominated profession - about 85pc of primary school teachers and 68pc of secondary school teachers are women, according to the CSO's Women and Men in Ireland Report 2013.

The unemployed can also get a raw deal when it comes to car insurance - some insurers charge unemployed people up to 50pc more than employed people.

"Some insurers won't quote for unemployed people - or if they do, the car insurance rate will be loaded because they may be going around in the car more," said one broker who did not wish to be named. "If you put yourself down as a house husband when looking for car insurance instead of an unemployed person, you'll usually get more insurers to cover you - as well as a better quote."

Liberty Insurance quoted €862 for comprehensive car insurance for a 38-year-old dentist from Newbridge, Co Kildare who drives a one-year-old Lexus IS Series 250 (5 door). The insurer quoted €1,328.55 - 54pc more - for an unemployed individual with the same profile who was driving the same car.

Although a spokeswoman for Aviva said it does not charge the unemployed more than employed people, most insurers do.

Furthermore, car insurance for an unemployed person is likely to be higher if the individual has no employment history than it would be for someone who has recently lost their job.

For example, a 28-year-old unemployed bank official from Tallaght who drives a two-year-old Ford Fiesta would pay €463 for comprehensive cover with Zurich, according to quotes obtained by coverinaclick.ie. However, an individual with the same profile but who has no employment history would pay €583 - about 26pc more.

Insurance for not being able to work

Those in male-dominated jobs often pay more for income protection insurance, which pays a portion of your salary should illness or disability prevent you from working.

A builder could pay almost 60pc more for income protection than a hairdresser for example.

A 30-year-old builder would pay Friends First €127.57 a month for income protection of €30,000 a year until the age of 65, assuming the builder doesn't smoke and his cover would start to pay out 13 weeks after he was unable to work, according to the online brokers, LAbrokers.ie. A 30-year-old hairdresser or creche worker with the same profile would pay €81 a month for the same cover, while a 30-year-old nurse would pay €103 a month. People in certain occupations, such as fishermen, dairy farmers, and bus drivers, could also struggle to get income protection insurance, according to John Geraghty, managing director of LABrokers.ie.

Before the gender equality laws were introduced in December 2012, insurers could and did charge men more for insurance - simply because they were men. Although insurers have been banned from doing so since, many men are still getting a raw deal with insurance - because of their job.

Straying off beaten track can push up cost of insurance

Working in a male-dominated job is not the only thing which can cost you when it comes to insurance - so too can your age, hobbies, and a propensity to head off the beaten track. This is particularly the case with travel and life insurance.

Anyone over the age of 65 could pay twice the price for travel insurance as a younger person would. Expect to pay even more for your cover if you are over the age of 75 - and to have to arrange it through a specialist insurer.

Your travel destination could also push up the cost of travel cover - or make you struggle to get it.

"Insurers will usually refuse to cover clients travelling to areas where the Department of Foreign Affairs have advised against travel to," said Ciaran Mulligan, managing director of Blue Insurances.

So if you're currently planning to visit Syria, the Congo, Liberia, Afghanistan, or Nepal (which was last week devastated by an earthquake), you're unlikely to get a travel insurer to cover you. "You normally won't get cover for countries where there is conflict or war," added Mr Mulligan.

Even if the country you are visiting is safe to travel in, the further it is away from home, the more expensive your travel cover could be. Expect to pay more for an annual travel insurance policy if you're travelling to the United States or Canada for example than if you are simply travelling around Europe.

What you plan to get up to while abroad could also push up the cost of your travel cover - particularly if you're planning to do a tandem skydive, go rock climbing, or trek for more than 2,000km, according to Mr Mulligan.

Hazardous sports could see you pay more for life insurance - because of the high risk of accidental death. Expect to pay more for life cover if you're into boxing, diving, mountaineering, parachuting, hang-gliding or potholing.

Working at heights greater than 30 feet can also cost you with life cover - so expect to pay more if you're a window cleaner, roof tiler, satellite disc installer or painter.

The Case for Breaking Up Combined Gas And Electric Utilities

The same holding company should not be allowed to own natural gas and electric power utilities that serve the same geographic territories.
The logic supporting this argument has three principal parts, which can be described generally as shale gas, competition and public safety.
Over the past decade, unconventional technologies have radically transformed the outlook for natural gas production in the United States. At current rates of consumption, the US is believed to have an ample supply of domestic natural gas to last 100 years. Over the next 20 years, the natural gas price is expected to remain significantly below the prices of competing energy sources, including electricity and oil. Federal and state energy policies were not designed to deal with the challenges of abundant natural gas. Two critical policy challenges posed by abundance are related to economic competition public safety.
Natural gas competes with electricity. A fully-regulated utility generally competes only against other sources of energy, which is commonly called “inter-fuel competition.” It is the only meaningful form of competition for monopoly utility companies. When the same company has a legal monopoly to sell both gas and electricity to customers located in a specific area, inter-fuel competition is likely to be the first casualty. Combination utilities (or, combo-utilities) are holding companies that own both natural gas and electric utility subsidiaries.
Combo-utilities have hugely significant incentives to favor capital investments in electric power assets rather than natural gas assets whenever possible. The reason for this preference is simple. Utilities earn higher returns on investments made in connection with sale of electrons than those made in connection with the sale of molecules. Electric power investments usually receive a higher return on equity that natural gas investments. Investor-owned utilities have fiduciary duties to shareholders (and pecuniary incentives in the form of bigger bonuses and etc.) to favor electric investments over gas investments, especially when they compete. At the same time, many customers have increasing incentives to use more natural gas and less electricity to the extent they can capture the price differential.
Most utilities operate under some version of “cost of service” or “rate of return” regulation. Generally speaking, this type of regulation allows utilities to earn annual revenues that cover (on a dollar per dollar basis) all expenses prudently incurred. In contrast to the dollar-for-dollar recovery allowed for expenses, utilities are allowed both recovery of, and a return on, their ratebase. Regulators determine the rate of return utilities are allowed to earn in a proceeding called a rate case.
In 2013, Charles King, an economist and expert utility rates, testified on this issue before the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) as part of Consolidated Edison’s most recent rate case. Con Edison, the largest investor-owned utility in New York State, provides both electric and natural gas service in most of New York City and Westchester County. King testified on behalf of Westchester County on what rate of return Con Edison should be allowed to earn in future years.
King compared the equity rates of return allowed for separate proxy groups of electric and gas utility companies and concluded that Con Edison should be awarded a slightly higher return on equity for its electric rate base than its gas rate base. King explained why he had recommended different rates of return for electric and gas operations like so:
I have recommended two rates of return because the characteristics, and hence the risks, of electric and gas distribution services are different. In general, gas distribution is considered somewhat less risky than electric distribution. While both are sensitive to weather, electric service is far more vulnerable to storms. Electric plant is somewhat more complex, with generally shorter service lives and, because of its overhead facilities, it is susceptible to being more labor-intensive.
In 2013, the average dividend yield for a group of 15 similar electric utilities was 3.81%. By contrast, during the same year, the average dividend yield for a group of nine similar natural gas utilities was 3.57%. Based on these and other data points, King recommended the PSC grant Con Edison a 8.53% rate of return on equity for capital devoted to electric service and a 8.39% rate of return on equity capital devoted to gas service.
Given these rates of return, it seems difficult to dispute that Con Edison – and any other combo-utility – has an economic incentive to invest in its electric rate base instead of its natural gas rate base when possible. In 2011, combo-utilities that sold both electric and gas utilities accounted for natural gas deliveries of 23.6 billion cubic feet per day to 44 million gas customers.
The potential chilling effect combo-utilities could have on inter-fuel competition has not gone entirely unnoticed. In 2014, IHS CERA completed a groundbreaking study of the implications of the shale gas revolution for the U.S. energy economy.
The study, called Fueling the Future with Natural Gas, concluded that retail natural gas prices will remain lower over the long-term than refined oil products or electricity on a Btu-equivalent basis. Natural gas can displace electric power directly in multiple applications like air conditioning, space heating, water heating, cooking and so forth. Fuel cells like those made by Bloom Energy and generators like those made by Generac can also displace purchases of electric power from the utility grid.
Given that utility regulators are supposed to be a substitute for market forces, IHS CERA’s study urged state regulators “to assure that there is a level competitive playing field for all forms of energy, but especially between gas and electricity.”
One critical role for [state utility regulators] will be to address gas and electric competition for combination utilities, or companies that distribute both gas and electricity. Most companies are reluctant to cannibalize their markets by promoting competition between affiliates. However, without such competition society may not gain the benefits of lower total energy usage and lower emissions from conversions to natural gas.
Over time, the lack of genuine inter-fuel competition may have implications for public safety.
I often describe combo-utilities as electric companies that happen to also own a natural gas utility. The amount of money combo-utilities make from natural gas is usually dwarfed by the amount of money it makes from electricity. Over the course of decades, this incongruity can influence the institution in profound ways. In many cases, the parent company’s management is heavily skewed towards the electric power business. Natural gas utilities are like the junior varsity squad. Eventually, this dynamic can create companies led by professionals with limited expertise and/or experience in natural gas.
The competence gap between gas and electric at the parent company is hardly the only problem. The gap in capabilities and systems used to operate the natural gas and electric systems will gradually grow too.
If we were running out of natural gas as once anticipated, the competence gap between the gas and electric divisions of combo-utilities would probably not be a problem. But now that we are using our natural gas system more than ever, we should be concerned about whether combo-utilities like Con Edison orPacific Gas & Electric are capable of protecting public safety. The pipeline explosions in San Bruno and New York City may be the proverbial canaries in the coalmine.

General Motors Global Sales Edge Up 2 Percent; China Remains GM's Largest Market

The GM sales total of 2,421, 123 trailed the 2.49 million global sales the Volkswagen Group reported for the first quarter and is almost certain to put GM in third place behind Toyota Motor , which has yet to report its worldwide sales for the first three months of this year.

With sales of 961,135 in the January-March period, China continued as GM’s highest-volume market, topping North America’s 789,780 deliveries; the number put GM’s China sales 9 percent ahead of last year’s pace and North American sales were 6 percent better than in the first quarter of 2014.

“The momentum our brands are building in China, the U.S. and Western Europe more than offset difficult conditions in some other large markets like Russia and Brazil,” said GM CEO Mary Barra in a release. “We are in the early days of a very aggressive onslaught of new products and customer-driven innovation,” she added.

There may be “momentum” in Europe, but it has yet to translate to a sales turnaround in the region that has been a lingering thorn in GM’s side: first-quarter sales in Europe were off nearly 14 percent. The 291,582 vehicles GM moved in Europe in the first quarter were a hefty 45,844 less than the same period last year. Meanwhile, GM’s sales in South America slid 15 percent and its sales for the combined Asia-Pacific, Africa and Middle East markets were down 2 percent.

Cadillac was a particularly bright spot in GM’s first-quarter global sales performance.

First-quarter sales results for GM in the key markets of North America and Europe were nearly 180 degrees from Volkwagen’s. The German automaking conglomerate pushed up sales by 4 percent in Europe, but while its overall North American sales also were up by 4 percent, sales slipped more than 1 percent in the still-rocking United States. Despite an enduring surge of buyers to U.S. new-car showrooms, Volkswagen has struggled to participate in the growth and the company’s moribund performance in the U.S. was believed to be a flashpoint in a recent and publicly detailed boardroom power struggle at Volkswagen.

Apart from Europe, GM’s first quarter results showed promise, although VW and Toyota are likely to be the two duking it out for the title of world’s largest auto maker in 2015. Encouragement for GM came in a 2.5-percent sales increase – including a 23-percent hike in China – for Cadillac, which has tussled to keep pace with German luxury-vehicle giants. There also was a plump 14.5-percent hike for the GMC brand and global sales for Buick were up 7.6 percent in the first quarter.(forbes.com)

Global warming: Scientists say temperatures could rise by 6C by 2100 and call for action ahead of UN meeting in Paris

The risk of hitting the highest upper estimate for global warming based on current levels of carbon dioxide emissions is now so high that it is equivalent to tolerating the risk of 10,000 fatal aircraft crashes a day, according to the 17 “Earth League” scientists and economists who have signed the joint statement.

The experts have drawn up a three-page summary of the action needed to be agreed on at the UN meeting in Paris this December, which is widely seen as the last chance for the world’s political leaders to agree on a binding treaty to prevent the global climate from slipping into a dangerously precarious state.

Scientists calculate that the world has already warmed by an average of about 0.85C over the past 120 years and that a further increase of no more than 2C is the lowest that could be tolerated without running the risk of dangerous climate “tipping points” leading to further, accelerated warming.

“We should aim to stay as far below [2C] as possible, since even 2C warming will cause significant damage and disruption. However, we are currently on a path to around 4C warming by 2100, which would create unmanageable environmental challenges,” says the statement.

“If we do not act now, there is even a 1 in 10 risk of going beyond 6C by 2100. We would surely not accept such a high risk of disaster in other realms of society. As a comparison, such a 1 in 10 probability is the equivalent of tolerating about 10,000 airplane crashes every day worldwide,” it says.

The Earth League researchers, who include economists Jeffrey Sachs and Lord Stern as well as world renown climate scientists from Europe, Brazil and India, warn that time is running out for a climate deal that binds countries to a process of “deep decarbonisation” where fossil fuels are largely replaced with cleaner sources of sustainable energy by 2050.

“2015 is potentially one of the most decisive years in modern human history on earth when it comes to determining our future prospects for wellbeing and prosperity for 9 to 10 billion people over the next century,” said Johan Rockstrom of the Stockholm Resilience Centre in Sweden who chaired the Earth League group.

“The key element of this statement is that a window is still open, but just barely. There is still an opportunity to make the transition to a safe, reasonably-stable climate in the future, and the decisions in 2015 may be decisive for that opportunity,” Dr Rockstrom said.

“If we follow the current trajectory of ‘business as usual’, it would have a one-in-ten probability of leading to 6C by the end of this century, and 6C, I think even the climate sceptics would agree, is place the world does not want to be in,” he said.

“It’s a place we have no evidence whatsoever of being capable of supporting the modern world as we know it. A one in ten probability of a catastrophic outcome is a very high number, in fact it is so high it would be equivalent to accepting 10,000 fatal aircraft crashes every day.

“It’s a probability level that we would never ever accept in any other sector of society, but we do so for some odd reason when it comes to the slow-changing risk of climate change,” he added.

The Earth Statement lists eight areas of action needed to be agreed on in Paris. This includes the agreement that countries will only be able to emit about half of the carbon dioxide – about 1,000 gigatonnes – that has already been released into the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution. This would mean leaving three quarters of known fossil fuel reserves in the ground.

“With current emission trends, the remaining 1,000 gigatonnes of CO2 would be used up within the next 25 years,” the statement says.

Professor Sir Brian Hoskins of the Grantham Institute for climate change at Imperial College London, one of the 17 signatories, said that climate change has had too little recognition as an election issue in Britain despite its huge significance for future generations.

“It’s like the Titantic sailing into waters with icebergs and yet what we hear is a debate in the bar about who’s going to buy the drinks. Get real. We are all on this boat and there’s some pretty nasty stuff out there and yet the conversation is at a trivial level,” Sir Brian said.

Dr Rockstrom added: “We are on a trajectory that will leave our world irrevocably changed, far exceeding the 2C mark. This gamble risks disaster for humanity with unmanageable sea-level rise, heat waves, droughts and floods.”

Eight-point plan to save the world

1. Governments must limit global warming to below 2C in order to limit unprecedented climate risks.

2. The limit of future CO2 emissions must be well below 1000 gigatonnes of CO2 to have a reasonable chance to hold the 2C line.

3. Countries must commit to deep decarbonisation, starting immediately and leading to a zero-carbon society by 2050.

4. Every country must formulate an emissions pathway consistent with deep decarbonisation. For the sake of fairness, rich countries and progressive industries can and should take the lead and decarbonise well before mid-century.

5. Targeted research, development, demonstration and diffusion of low-carbon energy systems and sustainable land use are prerequisites to unleash a wave of climate innovation.

6. A global strategy to limit vulnerability, build resilience and deal with loss and damage of communities from climate impacts.

7. Countries must agree to safeguard carbon sinks and vital ecosystems, such as forests.

8. Governments must urgently encourage new sources of climate finance for developing countries to enable our rapid transition to zero-carbon, climate-resilient societies.

One game. Six overtimes. 88 goddamn rounds. Consensus says it’s the longest single game of pro

It was supposed to be a one-sided mismatch. exceL eSports, a team that some felt didn’t even deserve to be competing in the ESL UK Premiership, was matched against Team XENEX, a UK team of much better renown. People figured it’d be quick—and probably a little ugly.

What happened instead was one of the longest knock-down, drag-out back-and-forths in Counter-Strike history, and the longest in pro Counter-Strike: Global Offensive history. As UKCSGO explained:

“Opening up on the [counter terrorist] side, XENEX went on to take the half with a five round lead of exceL, who had managed to take five rounds of their own during the half. Whilst this is a typical score for an Inferno clash, the odds were stacked heavily in favour of XENEX who would have been aiming for a greater advantage. This was no great worry for the XENEX side though, who began to rack up the terrorist rounds for themselves and bring the score to a comforting 14-8. At this stage in the game, something must have clicked for the exceL camp, who managed to take hold of 5 consecutive rounds before any sort of response from XENEX, who eventually led the game 15-13. Just two more rounds from exceL eSports saw the game lead into what would become the longest games of Counter Strike in memory.”

Back and forth and back and forth and back and forth. Neither team could pull ahead definitively, enough to be declared the winner. The game was a nail-biter that ended up going for nearly three hours—resolve-whittling ages in a tense, methodical game like Counter-Strike. But that wasn’t what sealed it so much as it was the fact that Counter-Strike isn’t designed for such lengthy games. Every player exceeded 50 kills, buy rounds (and really, the entire Counter-Strike meta) went haywire.

Eventually, XENEX took it, but exceL proved they could dance with the big(ger) boys and keep them on their toes the whole time. Oh, and then there was an entire second game after that, because pro Counter-Strike: Global Offensive works on a best-of-three system. The whole series lasted more than four hours. So yeah: grueling.

Still, it’s interesting to see both a game and its players taken to the limits like this. And while there have been longer pro play times in games like StarCraft, this was definitely one of the more entertaining Longest Matches Ever. Bravo to all involved, and may angels who only get aces sing of their deeds in Counter-Strike valhalla.

The Insiders: Obama’s global warming distraction

TS-NEWSMAIL.CF - Incredibly, in Sunday’s weekly video address, President Obama said, “Today, there is no greater threat to our planet than climate change.” I say “incredibly” because that just isn’t true – and if President Obama really believes it is, then it is time to panic. Given the state of the world and the urgent problems facing us that directly affect our prospects for peace and prosperity, global warming shouldn’t even be in the top five on the list of problems our president should be worrying about. In case this administration hasn’t noticed, a lot of the world is burning and global economic growth is so stagnant that it feeds the prospects of instability at home and abroad.

No less than Graham Allison, director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University, and Dimitri K. Simes, president of the Center for the National Interest, wrote a piece published this week that asks “Could a U.S. response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine provoke a confrontation that leads to a U.S.-Russian war?” And not just any war, but one with “catastrophic consequences.” Russia is a nuclear power “capable of literally erasing the United States from the map.” Anything Graham Allison says has to be taken seriously.

If that’s not enough to worry you, after world economic leaders gathered in Washington last week for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings, even the New York Times wrote that, “concern is rising in many quarters that the United States is retreating from global leadership just when it is needed most.” The chief economic adviser to the government of India called that concern “the single most important issue of these spring meetings.”

That New York Times piece echoed what Larry Summers, former economic adviser to President Obama, wrote earlier this month. In an op-ed in The Post (in which he didn’t mention President Obama), Summers asked if it was time for “A global wake-up call for the U.S.?” Summers implies that our allies are not only ignoring us, but wholesale abandoning the American point of view by siding with China and joining the new Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). He wrote that America’s “failure of strategy and tactics” in persuading allied countries to eschew the AIIB “should lead to a comprehensive review of the U.S. approach to global economics.”

Here at home, economic growth is anemic and job creation has stalled. In the Obama era, more people are on the dole, business start-ups are at an all-time low as entrepreneurs throw in the towel and the world is in more turmoil and danger than at any time since the end of the Cold War. Doug Holtz-Eakin of the American Action Forum wrote a paper, “The Growth Imperative: How Slow Growth Threatens Our Future and the American Dream,” which was published by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In it, Holtz-Eakin states that, “since 2007, trend growth in per capita income in the United States has been 0.7 percent – only one-third of the postwar average of 2.1 percent prior to 2007.”

We have a lot of problems. So why would our president say global warming is our biggest threat? Probably because it suits his ideology and his management style. The truth is, if you accept at face value everything he says about climate change, there is nothing he can do in the 20 months he has left in office that will appreciably affect the climate. This is especially true given what the president defines as “success.” He champions his agreement with China on cutting carbon pollution, but all it really means is the United States begins to raise energy costs immediately and China agrees to have a meeting in 2030 to discuss what actions they may or may not take.

Prediksi Mengatakan Indonesia Akan Merajai Ekonomi Asia

"Perekonomian Indonesia memiliki kapasitas untuk pertumbuhan ekonomi jangka panjang yang kuat dari sekitar 5,4 persen per tahun selama 2016-2020 horizon waktu," kata Kepala Ekonom IHS Rajiv Biswas seperti dilansir CNBC, Jumat (17/4/2015).

Hal tersebut dikatakan akan menjadi bagian dari perekonomian terbesar di Asia Tenggara saat Produk Domestik Bruto (PDB) USD870 miliar atau Rp11.136 triliun menjadi USD1,14 triliun atau Rp14.592 triliun pada 2017 (kurs Rp12.800 per USD).

Bahkan, PDB Indonesia diproyeksikan pada tahun 2023 sebesar USD2,1 triliun atau Rp26.880 triliun melebihi Australia yang sebesar USD1,52 triliun atau Rp19.456 triliun. "Kami memiliki perbandingan global, ekonomi Indonesia akan lebih besar dari Rusia, Spanyol atau Belanda pada 2023," kata Biswas.

Perekonomian Indonesia terbukti cukup tangguh di tengah harga komoditas yang meningkat dan kebijakan pengetatan moneter berkat konsumsi domestik yang stabil. Proyeksi pertumbuhan percepatan ekonomi di Indonesia pada tahun 2015 dan 2016 didorong oleh pemulihan ekspor dan dibantu oleh nilai tukar yang lebih rendah.

"Bangkitnya PDB Indonesia akan membuat percepatan pertumbuhan perdagangan bilateral dan peluang investasi di berbagai macam segmen pasar di industri, termasuk sumber daya, manufaktur dan jasa," kata Biswar.

Sementara itu, PDB per kapita Indonesia diperkirakan akan naik menjadi USD8.700 atau Rp111,36 juta dari USD3.400 atau Rp43,52 juta pada tahun 2025.(okezone.com)

Hal ini dikatakan Dekan Lee Kuan Yew Public Policy School Singapura Kishore Mahbubani dalam wawancara dengan Beritasatu English TV di sela-sela acara World Economic Forum on East Asia di Jakarta, Senin (20/4).

Kishore Mahbubani mengatakan Tiongkok dan India merupakan perbandingan dua negara yang sangat bertolak belakang. India, tuturnya, merupakan negara demokrasi terbesar namun tingkat pertumbuhan ekonominya tidak sebagus Tiongkok yang nota bene bukan negara demokrasi.

Dalam kaitan ini, ia berpendapat, Indonesia perlu meniru apa yang ditempuh Tiongkok dengan membuka pasar mereka. Dikatakan, ekonomi Tiongkok tumbuh luar biasa saat mereka membuka pasar mereka terhadap asing. "Semakin pasar dibuka, semakin tinggi terjadi persaingan, dan kita bisa meningkatkan tingkat kompetitif kita di pasar global, dan semakin banyak investor pun akan datang," tandasnya.

Ia mengatakan, Indonesia memiliki masa depan yang baik. Hal ini bisa dilihat dari optimistis yang ditunjukkan oleh para pemimpin dan juga rakyatnya. Tetapi, ada juga banyak tantangan yang harus dihadapi oleh Indonesia. Dalam kaitan ini, Indonesia perlu membuka pasar terhadap asing sembari meningkatkan tingkat persaingan agar bisa bersaing dengan negara-negara lain dalam kompetisi yang lebih luas.

Dengan begitu, Indonesia akan sejajar dengan negara-negara tetangga China, Jepang, India, Australia, dan Korea Selatan. Mengutip CNBC, Rabu (22/5), saat ini ukuran ekonomi Indonesia yang diukur dari Produk Domestik Bruto (PDB) adalah US$ 870 miliar. Pada 2017, PDB Indonesia diperkirakan naik menjadi US$ 1,14 triliun.

"Ekonomi Indonesia punya kapasitas untuk pertumbuhan ekonomi sekitar 5,4% selama 2016-2020," kata Rajiv Biswas, Kepala Ekonom Asia-Pasifik IHS.

Pada 2023, IHSG memperkirakan ekonomi Indonesia akan tumbuh 2 kali lipat menjadi sekitar US$ 2,1 triliun. Melampaui ekonomi Australia, yang saat ini bernilai US$ 1,52 triliun.

"Secara global, ekonomi Indonesia akan lebih besar dari Rusia, Spanyol, dan Belanda pada 2023," ujar Biswas.

Pada 2025, IHS memproyeksikan PDB per kapita Indonesia akan naik menjadi US$ 8.700 dari saat ini US$ 3.400. Indonesia akan menjadi salah satu negara konsumen terbesar di dunia.

Meskipun terkena dampak perlambatan ekonomi global dan penurunan harga komoditas, ekonomi Indonesia tetap mampu bertahan. Penyebabnya adalah konsumsi domestik yang besar dan terus bertambahnya masyarakat kelas menengah.
Dalam 1 dekade ke depan, Biswas menyatakan Indonesia akan semakin berperan dalam pusaran geopolitik dunia. Indonesia akan punya suara yang lebih 'bergema' dalam berbagai forum dunia seperti G20.

"Pertumbuhan ekonomi Indonesia juga menciptakan peluang investasi baru bagi berbagai industri. Misalnya pengolahan sumber daya alam, manufaktur, dan jasa," terang Biswas.

Meski begitu, Indonesia bukannya tidak menghadapi tantangan. Indonesia harus mampu memperbaiki iklim bisnis dan mengurangi kesenjangan.

"Bonus demografi di Indonesia artinya ada sekitar 2,4 juta orang yang akan masuk ke pasar tenaga kerja setiap tahunnya. Ini tentu memutuhkan lapagan kerja yang memadai agar tidak terjadi keresahan sosial," tegas Biswas.

Agar mampu menciptakan lebih banyak lapangan kerja, Biswas menyebutkan Indonesia harus membangun industri manufaktur. Indonesia sudah tidak bisa lagi mengandalkan penjualan komoditas mentah.

"Kunci bagi Indonesia adalah mendiversifikasi perekonomiannya ke arah manufaktur. Ini akan menciptakan lapangan kerja yang signifikan, juga nilai tambah bagi perekonomian," ucap Biswas.(MedanBisnis)

Indonesia menempati posisi 13 dari 20 negara dengan Produk Domestik Bruto (PDB) mencapai USD 2,1 triliun.

* PDB AS Terbesar, China Diprediksi Melejit

Menurut riset, AS masih menjadi terbesar dengan angka PDB mencapai USD 24,8 triliun.
Tiga urutan di bawah AS ditempati oleh negara-negara Asia yakni China (PDB USD 22,2 triliun), India (USD 6,6 triliun), dan Jepang (USD 6,4 triliun).
Tahun ini PDB AS sebesar USD 16,8 triliun.
Pada 2006, PDB AS mencapai 25% dari PDB dunia.
Sepanjang tahun ini, dari total PDB dunia, AS menguasai 23%- nya.
Pada 15 tahun ke depan PDB China adalah dua kali pencapaian tahun ini. Lantaran itu, China menjadi kekuatan dari Asia untuk menyaingi AS.
Pada 15 tahun ke depan, India melampaui Brasil, Inggris, Prancis, Jerman, dan Jepang, untuk berada satu level di bawah China atau di posisi ketiga
Di posisi paling buncit pada 15 tahun ke depan adalah Belanda dengan PDB USD 1,0 triliun.
Negara-negara Uni Eropa seperti Prancis dan Italia diperkirakan perekonomiannya akan mengalami stagnasi.

Di tahun 2015 Bank Dunia memprediksi bahwa perekonomian Indonesia hanya tumbuh 5,2%.
Prediksi tersebut di bawah perkiraan Bank Dunia sebelumnya pada Juli 2014, di mana pada saat itu Bank Dunia memprediksi pertumbuhan ekonomi Indonesia akan mencapai 5,6% di 2015.
Bank Dunia menjelaskan, pertumbuhan ekonomi tersebut dipengaruhi oleh melambatnya pertumbuhan ekonomi dunia, yang berakibat pada melemahnya harga sejumlah komoditas Indonesia, yang pada akhirnya berdampak pada semakin mengecilnya peluang-peluang baru.
Menurut Bank Dunia tantangan yang harus dihadapi Indonesia adalah masalah penyerapan belanja modal pemerintah (capital expenditure) di mana per Oktober 2014, capital expenditure hanya 38% dari persiapan pendanaan untuk tahun 2014.
Penyesuaian harga bahan bakar minyak (BBM) akan berdampak ke inflasi, tetapi dampak tersebut sifatnya sementara.
Prediksi Bank Dunia, angka inflasi 2015 berada pada angka 7,5% dan akan menurun tajam di akhir tahun 2015 jika tidak ada gejolak ekonomi lainnya.
Penghematan anggaran sebesar Rp100 triliun yang berasal dari penyesuaian harga BBM memberikan ruang kepada pemerintah untuk menambah belanja publik bagi sektor-sektor yang prioritas seperti pelayanan kesehatan.
Sektor kesehatan adalah salah satu dari 3 tantangan pemerintah ke depan karena dengan terciptanya pelayanan kesehatan baik maka akan berpengaruh pada kekuatan SDM yang nantinya akan terus berperan menggerakan roda perekonomian negara.
Tantangan Indonesia lainnya yakni pemerintah harus menggenjot pendapatan negara dengan memaksimalkan pendapatan pajak.
Tantangan lain juga terkait masalah kesehatan. Pembiayaan kesehatan penting untuk memperkuat pondasi negara dalam hal ini SDM, karena SDM itulah yang akan terus menggerakan roda ekonomi ke depan.
Menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN (MEA) masalah pembangunan fasilitas pendukung bisnis dinilai sangat penting karena dengan adanya fasilitas bisnis baik akan mendukung berkembangnya dunia bisnis yang akan berdampak pada masuknya investasi.

Indonesia dengan Jepang Asik Bahas Prospek Perekonomian Dan Perdaganga

Jakarta, TS-NEWSMAIL.CF - Presiden RI, Joko Widodo dan PM Jepang, Shinzo Abe sepakat membicarakan lebih dalam kerjasama konkrit ekonomi dan investasi kedua negara pada pertemuan kedua kepala pemerintahan di sela sela Konferensi Asia Afrika 2015 di Jakarta. Pertemuan ini merupakan kelanjutan pertemuan bilateral sebelumnya pada saat kunjungan Presiden RI ke Jepang tanggal 23 Maret 2015.

"Kedua pemimpin juga membahas implementasi rencana Jepang untuk meningkatkan investasi di Indonesia dalam berbagai sektor, diantaranya infrastruktur, transportasi, maritim, dan energi," tulis siaran pers Kementerian Luar Negeri yang diterima Redaksi Seruu.com di Jakarta, Rabu (22/4/2015).

Presiden RI mendorong agar kedua negara dapat melanjutkan negosiasi Perjanjian Penghindaran Pajak Berganda (P3B) untuk meningkatkan arus investasi, dalam upaya mendorong implementasi peningkatan kerja sama investasi. Presiden RI berharap agar skema pembiayaan proyek 140 milyar yen yang telah disepakati untuk pelabuhan Cilamaya dan proyek Shinkansen dapat segera dimulai. Presiden RI juga mengharapkan rencana investasi perusahan swasta Jepang termasuk Toyota, Suzuki dan Mitsui dapat dimateraliasikan dalam waktu dekat.

"Kedua kepala negara juga menyambut baik kunjungan Kaidanren (Kamar Dagang) Jepang yang berkunjung ke Indonesia pada 9 April 2015 untuk bertemu langsung dengan pengusaha Indonesia," tulis keterangan pers tersebut.

Jepang merupakan salah satu mitra ekonomi terbesar Indonesia, pada 2014 volume perdagangan Indonesia-Jepang mencapai US$ 40,17 milliar. Jepang adalah partner dagang ketiga terbesar Indonesia setelah RRT dan Singapura, Jepang juga investor kedua terbesar Indonesia, setelah Singapura, dengan nilai investasi sebesar US$ 2,7 milyar tahun 2014.

TS-NEWSMAIL.CF, BANDA ACEH - Geliat pertumbuhan ekonomi kecil di Banda Aceh menunjukkan pada tingkatan positif. Pertumbuhan ekonomi tercatat stabil dan mencapai angka 6,12 persen atau jauh meningkat dibandingkan kondisi sebelum terjadi bencana taunami 2004 silam.

Pernyataan itu disampaikan Wali Kota Banda Aceh Illiza Sa'aduddin Djamal saat memberi sambutan pada sidang paripurna istimewa DPRK Banda Aceh dalam rangka memperingati hari jadi ke 810 Kota Banda Aceh di Gedung DPRK setempat, Rabu (22/4/2015).

Menurutnya, pendapatan domestik regional bruto (PDRB) meningkat secara stabil hingga mencapai Rp 3,65 triliun di tahun 2013 dengan PDRB perkapita mencapai Rp 15,25 juta.

"Membaiknya kondisi perekonomian juga ditunjukkan dengan terus meningkatnya jumlah industri kecil dan menengah dari 5.861 ditahun 2012 menjadi 5.933 ditahun 2013," katanya.

Angka itu, tambahnya, diprediksi akan terus meningkat sejalan dengan berbagai penerapan inovatif yang mendukung kemudahan dan iklim dunia usaha. "Seperti penerapan aplikasi perizinan secara online yang diresmikan pada Februari lalu," jelasnya.

Selain itu, investasi berskala nasional juga mulai tampak tumbuh di Kota Banda Aceh. Hal ini terbukti dengan terdapat 20 proyek beskala nasional melalui penanaman modal asing (PMA) dengan investasi sebesar Rp 1,6 triliun. Lalu juga ada empat proyek penanaman modal dalam negeri (PMDN) senilai Rp 77,8 miliar.
"Peningkatan perekonomian juga dapat dilihat dari menurunnya jumlah angka kemiskinan di Banda Aceh, dari 8,5 persen ditahun 2012 menjadi 7,17 persen di tahun 2013. Jumlah koperasi yang aktif juga tercatat mencapai lebih dari 400 unit koperasi," terang Illiza.

Sedangkan dari kualitas hidup dan kesejahteraan, kata Illiza, Banda Aceh juga bersaing dengan kota-kota maju lainnya di Indonesia. Indeks pembangunan manusia (IPM) Banda Aceh mencapai 79 pada 2013 dan yang tertinggi di Provinsi Aceh.

Penanaman mangrove yang dilakukan para komunitas peduli lingkungan ini dalam rangka memperingati Hari Bumi yang jatuh pada 22 April. Kegiatan tersebut bertujuan untuk melestarikan dan menjaga ekosistem hutan mangrove.

“Karena, hutan mangrove di pesisir Muaragembong sudah parah dan sudah berdampak pada bahaya abrasi. Dan di samping itu juga untuk menetralisir kandungan zat berbahaya dalam air akibat tingginya pencemaran air di Kabupaten Bekasi,” ungkap panitia kegiatan, Yusup Maulana.

Menurut Yusup, aksi penanaman mangrove harus menjadi agenda rutin, khususnya di wilayah yang kini sedang kritis dan terancam bahaya abrasi seperti di Kampung Beting.

“Masih perlu dan harus dihijaukan, kan itu juga untuk future, masa depan anak cucu kita, bagaimana kalau misalkan kita sekarang tidak peduli kepada lingkungan, bagai dengan nasib anak cucu kita,” katanya.
Syahwono Adji, salah seorang peserta kegiatan tersebut menambahkan, penanaman mangrove sangat penting untuk menjaga kelestarian alam dan melindungi bumi dari kerusakan.

Adapun bulan Rajab adalah bulan mulia yang juga boleh kita berpuasa di dalamnya bahkan sangat di anjurkan seperti disebutkan dalam hadits shohih riwayat Abu Daud juz 2 hal. 322 petunjuk Rasulullah untuk Abi Mujibah Al-Bahili seorang yang sangat rajin berpuasa agar berpuasa di bulan Harom dengan sabdanya “Berpuasalah di bulan harom”. ringkasnya puasa di bulan Rajab adalah sangat dianjurkan dan ini adalah yang di kukuhkan oleh para ulama 4 Madzhab.

“Kita harus menghindari atau menjauhi peribadan yang tidak pernah dilakukan Rasulullah seperti sejumlah salat sunat,” demikian imbauan yang dikeluarkan Pusat Kajian Islam Masjid Hasanuddin Madjedi Banjarmasin.

Peribadatan yang harus dijauhi itu, menurut imbauan tersebut, seperti melakukan salat sunat, puasa, zikir bahkan umrah hanya khususnya menyambut Bulan Rajab.

“Rasulullah tidak pernah melaksanakan ibadah sunat yang khusus dikerjakan untuk menyambut Rajab,” ujar imbauan itu.

Walau demikian, bagi yang biasa puasa sunnah Senin dan Kamis atau puasa sunnah tiga hari pertengahan bulan Islam, silakan saja melaksanakannya.

TS-NEWSMAIL.CF – Berita – Nasional , 1 Rajab 1436 Hijriah yang menurut kalender umat Islam jatuh pada hari Senin (20/04/2015) kemarin membuat banyak orang yang bertanya-tanya apakah hukum mengerjakan puasa Rajab itu, apakah wajib, sunnah, makruh, atau haram. Serta bagaimanakah niat puasa bulan Rajab dan tata cara menjalankan puasanya. Bulan Rajab adalah termasuk kedalam empat bulan haram bersama Dzulqo’dah, Dzulhijjah, dan Muharram.

Allah berfirman dalam Surah At Taubah: 36, “Sesungguhnya bilangan bulan pada sisi Allah adalah dua belas bulan, dalam ketetapan Allah di waktu Dia menciptakan langit dan bumi, di antaranya empat bulan haram. Itulah (ketetapan) agama yang lurus, maka janganlah kamu menganiaya diri kamu dalam bulan yang empat itu.” Ada juga kalangan umat Islam yang menganggap puasa bulan Rajab sebagai ibadah khusus. Mereka mengucapkan niat, “Nawaitu Shauma Syahri Rajab Sunnatan Lillahi Ta’ala” atau “Saya niat puasa bulan Rajab, sunnah karena Allah ta’ala”.

Puasa Rajab ini berdasarkan pada perkataan terkenal bahwa “Sesungguhnya bulan Rajab adalah bulan yang agung, barangsiapa yang berpuasa sehari di bulan itu, Allah tuliskan untuknya (pahala) puasa seribu tahun.” Meskipun demikian perkataan ini bukanlah riwayat Nabi. Ibnu Hajar menggolongkannya sebagai hadits maudhu. Dan diisampaikan oleh Ibnu Taimiyah, “mengkhususkan bulan Rajab dan Sya’ban untuk berpuasa pada seluruh harinya atau beri’tikaf pada waktu tersebut, tidak ada tuntunannya dari Nabi saw. dan para sahabat mengenai hal ini.”

Disebutkan juga oleh Imam Asy Syafi’i, “Aku tidak suka jika ada orang yang menjadikan menyempurnakan puasa satu bulan penuh sebagaimana puasa di bulan Ramadhan.” Rasulullah SAW pernah bersabda, “Berpuasalah di bulan haram, lalu jangan puasa (kecuali Ramadhan)… ” (HR. Ahmad, Abu Daud, Al-Baihaqi). Dalam ajakan tersebut mengatakan, berpuasa sunnah tidak hanya dilakukan pada bulan Rajab saja, namun pada empat bulan Haram lainnya.

Menjalankan puasa di bulan Rajab akan menjadi sesuatu yang tidak tepat kalau seorang muslim menganggap, kekhususan pada puasa Rajab setara dengan puasa wajib di bulan Ramadhan. Begitu juga jika muncul anggapan, bahwa ibadah puasa di bulan Rajab, dinilai lebih tinggi nilai ibadahnya dibandingkan bulan-bulan lain. Beragam kelompok umat Islam berasumsi puasa bulan Rajab juga sebagai beribadah spesial. Niat Puasa Rajab, “Nawaitu Shauma Syahri Rajab Sunnatan Lillahi Ta’ala” atau “Saya niat puasa bulan Rajab, sunnah karena Allah ta’ala”. Itu merupakan niat untuk berpuasa di bulan rajab yang bisa dipakai sebagai niat berpuasa di bulan tersebut.

Rasulullah SAW pernah bersabda, “Berpuasalah di bulan haram, lalu jangan puasa (kecuali Ramadhan)” (HR. Ahmad, Abu Daud, Al-Baihaqi). Akan tetapi dalam ajakan tersebut, berpuasa sunnah tidak hanya dilakukan pada bulan Rajab semata, namun pada empat bulan Haram. 4 bulan yang termasuk bulan Haram adalah Rajab, Dzulqodah, Dzulhijjah, serta Muharram. Ada 2 alasan yang menjadi tolak ukur kenapa bulan tersebut dinamakan bulam haram yang salah satunya adalah bulan Rajab.

Bulan-Bulan Tersebut Dinamakan Bulan Haram Karena 2 Alasan:

    Lantaran diharamkannya berperang di dalamnya, terkecuali bila musuh mengawali menyerang lebih dahulu.
    Lantaran larangan tidak mematuhi beberapa hal yang diharamkan pada bulan-bulan itu lebih diutamakan dibanding pada waktu-waktu selainnya.

Menggerakkan puasa di bulan Rajab menjadi suatu hal yang tidak pas bila seseorang muslim berasumsi, kekhususan puasa Rajab setara dengan puasa bulan Ramadhan. Demikian pula bila muncul anggapan, beribadah puasa di bulan Rajab, dinilai lebih tinggi dari pada bulan-bulan lain. Walau demikian, untuk yang telah punya kebiasaan berpuasa, atau mau menjalankan puasa sunnah seperti harusnya, berpuasa di bulan Rajab insya Allah bakal memberi barokah untuk yang menjalankannya.

    “Sesungguhnya di surga terdapat sungai yang dinamakan Rajab, airnya lebih putih daripada susu dan rasanya lebih manis dari madu. Barangsiapa puasa sehari pada bulan Rajab, maka ia akan dikaruniai minum dari sungai tersebut”.

Beliau adalah pejuang emansipasi wanita, yang pada masa penjajahan Belanda saat ia hidup, berjuang untuk memberikan pendidikan dan sekolah pada kaum perempuan yang masih tertinggal dan terbelakang dibanding kaum pria.

Walau jadi putri dari seorang pejabat daerah, yakni Bupati Jepara, namun Kartini muda merasa keinginannya untuk mengenyam bangku pendidikan tinggi dikekang. Ia hanya bisa sekolah sampai jenjang dasar, atau sekedar bisa baca dan tulis bahasa Belanda.

Setelah itu Kartini yang masih sangat belia harus menikah. Ia dipingit dan tak boleh melanjutkan sekolah, saat usianya 12 tahun.

Namun berbagai buku, majalah terbitan Eropa, serta koran juga ia baca dan memperluas wawasannya. Korespondensi dengan sahabat-sahabat Kartini di Belanda pun makin membuka wawasan berpikir wanita muda tersebut. Ia lantas mulai mengumpulkan kaum wanita di lingkungannya, kemudian bersama saudara-saudaranya mulai mengajari berbagai hal pada mereka.

Kartini akhirnya menikah dan menjadi istri ketiga dari Bupati Rembang pada usia 24 tahun. Ia pun pindah ke Rembang mengikuti sang suami.

Namun dukungan suaminya membuat Kartini masih bisa membuka sekolah wanita di daerah Rembang. Ia kembali aktif dalam dunia pendidikan. Saat hamil, Kartini tak berhenti begitu saja dari kesibukannya mengajari para wanita untuk membaca, menulis, dan memasak.

Namun usia Kartini tak panjang. Usai lahirnya putra pertama yang bernama Soesalit Djojohadiningra pada 13 September 1904, Kartini mengalami sakit. Ia pun tutup usia beberapa hari kemudian, tepatnya 17 September 1904.

RA Kartini mewariskan pada kaum wanita sekolah-sekolah yang ia rintis, dan akhirnya diberi nama Sekolah Kartini. Sekolah tersebut dilanjutkan oleh sahabat-sahabatnya dan berkembang hingga ke daerah lain di tanah Jawa.(iBERITA.com)

Lahir di Jepara pada tanggal 21 April 1879, Raden Ajeng Kartini merupakan pelopor hak-hak perempuan selama masa kolonial Belanda dan inspirasi bagi perempuan setelah kemerdekaan. Perjuangannya dimulai sejak ia harus menjalani tradisi Jawa Kuno yang disebut dengan `pingitan', yang memiliki arti keadaan di mana seorang gadis remaja harus tinggal di rumah dan tidak diijinkan pergi keluar rumah kecuali jika ada pria yang menikahinya. Aktivitasnya pun menjadi amat terbatas. Waktunya hanya dihabiskan untuk membaca buku.

Ia sempat mendaftar masuk ke Europese Lagere School, tetapi terhalang oleh tradisi tersebut. Gagasannya terhadap pendidikan wanita pun semakin berkembang. Akhirnya ia membangun sebuah sekolah di halaman belakang balai kota setempat dan menuliskan buku fenomena berjudul `Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang`.

Perjuangannya kini memang sudah dapat dirasakan oleh banyak wanita Indonesia. Tak hanya dapat menempuh pendidikan yang setara dengan pria, tetapi wanita juga bisa menduduki posisi yang sama dengan pria di dunia pekerjaan maupun kepimpinan, seperti terpilihnya Megawati Soekarnoputri sebagai wakil presiden dan lanjut menjadi presiden ke-5 Indonesia.

TS-NEWSMAIL.CF - Banyak cara untuk memperingati hari Kartini yang jatuh pada tanggal 21 April, mulai menggunakan baju kebaya,sampai berbagi bunga di jalan.

Namun, dari sekian perayaan hari Kartini, masih ada yang tidak paham makna hari Kartini.

"Kami Bagi bunga ini hanya dalam rangka memperingati hari Kartini saja. Makna hari Kartini itu apa ya.. saya gak tahu" kata Mei Indah, salah satu siswi yang berbagi bunga di jalan A Yani Surabaya, saat ditemui suarasurabaya.net.

Sementara Nur Umaya ketua OSIS SMKN 1 Surabaya mengatakan, hari Kartini adalah hari dimmana, seluruh bangsa ini mengingatkan bagaimana emansipasi perjuangan seorang wanita, sampai bisa disejajarkan dengan seorang laki-laki.

"Dimana emansipasinya itu kalau dulu selalu dikekang, dipingit tidak boleh keluar rumah. Kini perempuan harus bisa maju dan berpendidikan sejajar dengan laki-laki," ujar dia

Kepala Sekolah SMKN 1 Surabaya, Bahrun, tidak menyangkal jika siswinya memang tidak banyak tahu tentang makna hari Kartini.

"Upacara pagi tadi sudah saya gembleng tentang makna hari kartini. Ternyata banyak siswi yang tidak tahu maknanya, karena peringatannya hanya setahun sekali," kata Bahrun, kepada wartawan.(suarasurabaya.net)
