Net tuition, after factoring in financial aid, held steady over that period, but that shows only that rising costs ate up most of the additional federal, state and private scholarships.

Pat Quinn will push hard this spring to shift some of the state’s skyrocketing pension costs off on local school districts and universities. A top official in the governor’s budget office downplayed Quinn’s recent comments on such a move, which school districts say could either trigger massive cuts in local school programs or force downstate and suburban districts to seek property tax increases.

WSIL TV – Governor Quinn, the House Speaker and the Senate President all support legislation that would require local school districts to pay more into the Teacher Retirement System. “It would lead to worsened labor relations, and it would lead to potential job losses in the local communities,” says Jim Clark, an Illinois Education Association representative. Local school districts and teachers’ unions are not taking the pension proposal lightly. Clark says the state is reneging on its obligations.

Editorial Board: Trillions in tax cuts

THE REPUBLICAN presidential candidates claim to abhor debt, yet propose tax cuts that would add trillions more. Yes, trillions. The case for continuing the George W. Bush tax cuts, at a cost of $3.7 trillion over 10 years (including interest), is shaky enough. The cuts for the wealthy alone, which President Obama would end, would cost with interest about $1 trillion over the next decade. But the GOP candidates want to continue all those cuts — and add many more, the vast bulk of which would again go to the wealthiest taxpayers.

When it comes to lobbying state legislators, where the contact occurs doesn’t matter as long as the member is well prepared for the meeting and will encourage support from the representative or senator.

IEA members are urged to participate in “Back Home Lobby Days” by meeting with the lawmakers in their home districts when the legislature is not in Springfield.

Legislators are not in session until the first week of February and are back home several weeks prior to the March Primary. Anytime legislators are not scheduled to be in Springfield is a good time to schedule a meeting in the home district with the people who make the laws that control teaching and learning conditions.

IEA will be making announcements throughout the 2012 legislative session about home district lobbying opportunities. Keep checking the IEA website for details on Back Home Lobby Days!

Budget open hearings begin Monday
