Although the engine and tanks present the typical architecture of a hypersports vehicle, the significant innovation lies in the subtraction process. In fact, the design proposes an alternation between empty and full spaces, which visually lighten the vehicle and presents aerodynamic solutions inspired by Formula 1.

Students of the Fashion Design course at IED Torino used the lockdown as an opportunity to experiment with a new expressive language that goes beyond traditional paradigms.

Exploring the future of fashion: not only the principles of sustainability and environmental responsibility in clothes manufacturing, but also the new expressive languages and innovative paradigms that can be used to create and present new collections. That is precisely what the students of the three-year Fashion Design course at IED Torino decided to do with their thesis project, Re Union. During an academic year in which it felt like the world was standing still and access to the school, workshops and tailoring studios was made impossible due to social distancing, these twenty-four young designers still developed and finalised as many men’s and women’s autumn/winter collections, working with digital tools and creatively transforming the limitations of lockdown into an opportunity to experiment outside the box.

In the preliminary stages of research and concept development, started before the Covid-19 pandemic took hold, focused classroom sessions and visits to production facilities and workshops with experts in the field allowed the students to understand and internalise various problems and solutions relating to the theme of sustainability. This theme became no longer merely a goal, but the basis and premise of the concept for all 25 outfits in each collection. With the sudden arrival of the public health emergency and the immediate switch to a distance-learning framework, the students became familiar with new ways of working and discovered digital tools as the key to moving forward with their project. Along with constant dialogue with faculty and with course coordinator Alessandra Montanaro through remote lessons and reviews, another fundamental tool for the students was CLO3D, an innovative virtual prototyping program that represents the future of the fashion industry. The software allowed to develop models and prototypes virtually, while working at home on the digital network, creating faithful simulations of wearability, setting, and runway presentation for the garments. Lastly, connected remotely, the students directed photo and video shoots of their outfits – produced by Ilaria Turchetti, tailoring workshop assistant, and Gianpiero Capitani, model maker and tailor, with fabrics provided by partner companies – leading the set, and guiding the styling and photography work, according to designs previously drawn up with IED faculty members Anna Neretto and Giorgia Mannavola.

It is precisely this centring of digital technologies at every stage of the design process, from preliminary designs to their manufacture and promotion, that boosts the development of an innovative paradigm for presenting the results: in the video show Re Union, the shots of the garments worn by models and the simulated runway of CLO3D follow one another in a hypnotic flow. This experimentation with a new mode of expression, which finds both inspiration and implementation in the digital world, conveys the reality of 2020. It embraces challenge, and the potential of a transformed everyday life, giving rise to an aesthetic language that can challenge and overcome the boundary between the virtual and the real.

Projects were designed by: Afra Alavioun, Ramona Ausino, Valentina Ballesio, Sofia Cagliero, Lucrezia Carbone, Marzia Casalotto Cossu, Noemi Coppola, Aminata Diop, Miriam Filippa, Gaia Fornasieri, Martina Gaggero, Francesca Gheller, Gaia Gramaglia, Letizia Guglielmino, Ilaria Malltezi, Elena Manenti, Giorgia Moschini, Elena Occhiena, Nuria Piccirillo, Elena Pistotti, Vittorio Rossi, Jessica Russo, Sara Salvio, Cristina Trigilia, graduates of the three-year programme in Fashion Design for the academic year 2019/20 at IED Torino, coordinated by Alessandra Montanaro.

Suzuki, Honda and Azimut deliver the brief to the students.

The graduating students in Transportation Design at Istituto Europeo di Design in Turin are approaching the finishing line. Goal? The thesis to be presented in the summer 2020. Also for this academic year 2019/2020 IED Torino has signed prestigious partnerships with leading companies in the sector, giving the students the opportunity to experience a relationship with a real customer and develop the skills necessary to match the requirements of the market.

The partner companies have delivered the project briefs to the students, who have started working on team under the guidance of the coordinator of the course Michele Albera.
Cars, motorbikes or yachts, all concepts must reflect the tradition of excellence of the partner brands, respectively Suzuki, Honda and Azimut. At the same time the projects must meet the emerging needs of the transportation field, undergoing a real transformation. Today mobility urgently calls for new infrastructure and vehicles to design solutions for possible sustainable futures and to create highly innovative models developed around the human being and in total respect of the resources and the environment.

SUZUKI – Car Design
Company representative: Kimihiko Nakada, Design Director
Only one thing has always been essential in car history: the user. The vehicle must meet the users’ needs, satisfy their requirements, interpret their aspirations, realise their dreams. Continuing the tradition of excellence of Suzuki and its off road legends Jimny and Vitara, a new hybrid 4×4 must express the partner company focus: neither the performance at any cost, nor the pure technology feature, but the great attention to the most important aspect of design, the human being. The project includes interior and exterior design of the 4X4XALL, with styling and 3D modelling, keeping package ratio and proportion, while correctly interpreting the Japanese approach to car design and always respecting the individual and the environment, for the world of today and tomorrow.

HONDA – Bike Design
Company representatives: Valerio Aiello, Design Section Manager; Simone Cilli, HR Section Manager; Daniele Lucchesi, Market Research Manager; Aldo Meli, Market Researcher
Urban mobility is changing rapidly within main cities. Public transportation reinforcement and new infrastructures stimulate people to move without pollution. A smart city can optimize traffic and transportation systems, by developing a new mobility and implementing other services, from power plants, water supply networks and waste management to law enforcement operations e routes to schools, libraries and hospitals. The aim is to create a better future for cities and their citizens with the pursuit of global environment sustainability improving the quality of life. Light vehicles and motorcycles will be part of it if the transition to zero emission will be complete. Inspired by this scenery and reflecting the history of Honda, the project must develop a vehicle for 2025. urban or not, rational or emotional, the design must relate to the key concepts of ne mobility, connection, interaction, fun, always respecting the individual and the environment.

AZIMUT – Yacht Design
Company representatives: Federica Bertolini, Style Manager; Margherita Bo, Brand Manager
Reflecting the tradition of excellence of Azimut – the partner brand that shapes the essence and style of Italian manufacturing into luxury yacht design – the project must develop a new yacht, the invisible vessel. Focusing on hi-tech, lighting design and materials, interior and exterior design must ensure the experience of a yacht that perfectly fits into the surrounding nature, blends with the landscape and reduces the environmental impact; a yacht that meets the requirements of the owner and the needs of the crew; a yacht that is a source of inspiration for those love the sea.

Two big news for IED Torino: IED mobility lab, a laboratory of innovation and development on the mobility of the future and the participation in the forthcoming Geneva International Motor Show, in collaboration with Hunday.

2018 begins with two innovations that confirm the line of change and international look adopted by IED Torino.

IED mobility lab opens in Turin, an innovation and development laboratory for the mobility of the future. The aim of the participatory research laboratory is to investigate the role of design in relation to different themes, such as the displacement of people and things and the relationship between transport systems and cities.

Head of IED mobility lab is Luca Borgogno, Design Manager Pininfarina, ex-student who has been working for years with IED Torino and whose professional experience, developed in twenty years of activity culminating in Pininfarina and Lamborghini, has always focused on research activities on mobility of the future.

Starting the activities of IED mobility lab, IED Torino confirms its participation in the forthcoming Geneva International Motor Show for the 15th year, launching the latest concept car created by the historic Master in Transportation Design in collaboration with the European Design Center Hyundai.

The concept is also the result of the projectual participation initiated by IED Turin with a selection of leading companies with international resonance: Sila Group, project partner, Sabelt and Protocube Reply, technical partners.

At the 85th Geneva Motor Show the Istituto Europeo di Design and Quattroruote reaffirmed the excellence and innovation of Italian design at a world preview of the Syrma concept car, the 11th 1:1 scale model designed by the now historic Master in Transportation Design of the Turin Istituto Europeo di Design.

The Swiss Motor Show, a regular appointment for both Quattroruote and the Istituto Europeo di Design, has been selected as the ideal venue to showcase this important cooperation, intended to highlight their common, markedly Italian DNA and to present a world preview of the concept car at the Quattroruote booth.

SYRMA (length 4,730mm – width 1,980mm – height 1,155mm – pitch 2,790mm) features an extremely innovative layout: three staggered front seats with central driving position and rear power unit. The concept has a hybrid propulsion system with a V6 twin turbo, approximately 4-litre heat engine and an electric engine that, together, deliver around 900 hp. Using the electric engine, this rear-wheel drive vehicle could circulate freely in city centres, effectively contributing to reducing air pollution. Designed to deliver total safety, the car features a complete array of innovative passive and active safety devices. In electric mode, the car is completely silent and its arrival is perceived through front laser projection of messages and images on the road. As regards internal layout, the central driving position guarantees maximum visibility when driving, while the cockpit that “envelops” the two side passengers, covered by a teardrop windscreen, acts as a protective shield of the cabin.

IED Istituto Europeo di Design has been included among the top 100 European School of Architecture and Design, issued by Domus Magazine.

The synergy between knowledge, know-how, creativity, technology, experimentation, strategic thinking and communication are the key elements that distinguish an IED Design from all the others.

IED has been selected after an accurate analysis conducted by an international jury, who evaluated schools best performance in three areas: presence of collaborative networks, strong professors and exceptional student work.

To be included in this ranking, schools has to work as as an Hub, joining knowledge and intellectual stimuli with the true business environment, creative studios, cultural institutions, research groups and other schools. Other selection criteria include the capability to connect people, places and communities or authoritative associations (e.g. Cumulus) in order to expose students to different ideas and vision.

This is what IED is and we want to thanks all the student, faculty and staff for their commitment on achieving this results.
