EXPLANATION: The regular piano Em chord is a triad, meaning that it consists of three notes. The chord is often abbreviated as Em (alternatively Emin).

White Piano Key Top Replacement

Open the piano, and take all the white keys out. If the numbers which are stamped into the key wood are hard to read, and you cannot tell "8"s from "3"s, mark them again with a felt pen before taking them out. If spinets keys have only two lines to match the keys, number them with a pen anyway.

If you have a Grand Piano. Once you have the action removed and on a work area, locate the three, four, or five metal brackets which hold the hammer rail. The brackets will stand vertically and have two feet, front and rear. Really old pianos may have wooden vertical mounting brackets. In each foot of each bracket is a screw holding it in place. Remove all the screws in these brackets. Lift the whole hammer rail and brackets off and store it in a very safe place where no one can play with it. It is VERY vulnerable to damage. Now, the key levers can be removed according to the following instructions.

You should have a full set of new white key tops that you ordered through your tuner or my Online Catalogue at the back of this book. I strongly encourage you to buy the key tops with the front molded onto the top. This "L" effect will help hold it on better. There is the proper amount of overhang included on these keys.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS NEW IVORY. International law forbids the killing of elephants. Furthermore; real ivory is now very undesirable since new type plastics have been invented. So, you need to get the old ivory off of the white keys if it is in suspect condition. Find a thin blade to slide under the ivories from the front, or start in the rear of the narrow part of the key tops. Try to avoid going downward into the grain of the wood. If you do, you can fill the lost wood with Weldwood wood filler from a local hardware store and file and sand it smooth again.

I will buy all the good ivories that are not chipped or broken at $5 per dozen if you mail them to me-- even discolored ones. Only send the wide front ends, not the narrow shank pieces. Don't try to clean them up. They break easily, and I have a way to clean them up. They have NO collector's value as some folks imagine. They are only useful to piano owners who want to replace one or two real ivories.

Next, clean all the white filler and cloth off of the key tops. If you leave it on, it will make the new tops cock eyed, and the key tops will not be lever. Scrape the sides of the key fronts to get all the finger crud off. This is cosmetic, but it will be much more noticeable with the new tops on.
Last step in preparation is to remove the white piece on the fronts of the keys. Do not remove them, of course, if you wish to only put on the tops without the fronts molded to the tops. It is cellulose on old pianos, so just carve it away, and clean the front down to wood. You may find this the most frustrating step in the whole process since the cellulose is often very well attached. One fellow burned them off since cellulose burns very well. Be very careful as you get to struggling with the knife and the fronts. We have had several people cut themselves rather badly doing this. Another way to remove the fronts is with a bed sander, preferably the disk type. You can zip them off in seconds and keep the front of the key lever from being damaged.

Notice that the key notation of each key top is on the back end of the key top. Follow this marking strictly. A key top for two notes may seem to be interchangeable, but you will regret not using those guides. Also, notice that the keytops on the extreme right and left end of the scale are special in width. This is rather obvious. I just like to mention obvious things since one is apt to be correct making such speculations. :-) Hey, when a Senator makes the most obvious comments, the crowd swoons with delight. Cut me a little slack too, OK?

If you are not using the Key Top Restoration Kit, buy a tube of GE white (white only) silicone at the hardware store. It does not hold as well as the PVC-E glue, but I have had only two come off in 20 years with silicone. If it comes off later, you can easily clean away the old glue and glue it right back on.

If you are using the Key Top Restoration Kit, use the PVC-E glue to attach the key tops to the lever. See the instructions in the side box.

Put an amount of silicone on the wood key top. Try to imagine the minimum needed to completely cover the top. Don't try to spread it with a tool. Be sure to get some on the front face of the wooden key to hold that part in place, that is, assuming you are using the key tops with the fronts molded on. Place the new plastic key top down on the silicone, and slide it toward you. This will spread the glue. Do this two or three times. Finnish by pushing on the front to spread the glue under the front. If any glue comes out the edges you may wipe it off. If any gets on the key top, don't panic. You can remove it after the work is all done by rubbing it with your thumb and forcing it to roll off. If you don't take it off now, you can trim it off when the work is all done with a razor knife, but with care not to slip and scratch the top.

You need to clamp it some way as the silicone glue dries. Try to avoid big "C" clamps. They are hard to control. Buy some narrow window screen molding from the hardware store, and cut it into pieces the length of the key tops. Put one piece of the wood on top of the key, and use rubber bands to hold it tight. Let the glue dry for at least as long as the directions on the tube call for. Try to position the key top so that any overhand is evenly divided from side to side. Again, make sure the front is pushed all the way back hard against the front of the key lever.

If you are using the Key Top Restoration Kit, first apply the PVC-E glue according to the instructions and the side box. Attach the top before the glue is overly dry so you can position it. First, use the front clamp with the round and flat jaw. Insert the round jaw into the hole in the front of the key with the flat jaw against the front of the key lever. I suggest you do this before putting the key top on the wooden lever. Place the wood square in place which protects the key front from damage from the clamp. Now, release the clamp slightly, and slide the front into place under the wood piece.
Quickly position the whole top so the sides are lined up and centered as best you can. Slightly release the clamps alternately a couple of times to allow the key top to settle completely into position as tight as possible. Some over hang may be there, but you will dress that later, as instructed below. Finally, use the two clamps and wood strip to clamp the top. Set that key lever aside, and start the next one. By the time you have it clamped, you should be able to remove the clamps on the first key lever and move on that way.

The new key tops WILL hang over the edge of the wood key slightly. Don't worry, you will file this off AFTER the silicone has dried, but PLEASE take your time and make sure the new white top is centered so that the overhang is equal on both sides. This is important. DO NOT adjust the key top so that the rounded edge is flush with one edge of the key. It will make for hard finishing work later.

After you are sure you have it right, hold the whole mess of wood, plastic, and rubber bands about eight inches from your nose, and look it over from every angle. Look for the slight misalignment that must be there. Don't be easily satisfied. Look for termites also. What better time than now to catch any of these beasties walking about on your keys. Lay it down very carefully without tension against the plastic key top-- in other words, not resting on the new key top. Also, beware of little people (and some grown up trouble makers) who just HAVE to pick everything up and feel it. They claim they are, "just looking at it." I find this bizarre since looking is generally not done with the finger tips. Oh well, such is life.
You may want to do several a night after work rather than all at once. That way you can concentrate on the job and be a perfectionist at it. Hurrying will get you poor results.
Once you have several (or all) of the whites glued on, you now need to dress the edges.

Step One: Find a medium size fine toothed flat file. File the "notch." (Study the diagram carefully as you go through this process) The "notch" CANNOT be left undone since it is essential so that the front of the sharp does not hang up in the notch. Be sure to file the key DOWNWARD and at an angle matching the angle of the notch. If you file UPWARD, and is you used silicone glue, you will probably knock the new key top off. Filing up also could leave tiny tails. File the plastic flush with the wood in the notch.
As you file the "notch," DO NOT glide sideways into the long side of the key top. You could have another notch in that side which you cannot get out.

Step Two : File the long edges and side of the head of the key flush with the wood sides. Remember-- DOWNWARD please. Also, beware of digging into the notch and making it uneven.

Step Three : Round the long edges you just filed flush. A square edge will irritate the musician. Use long even downward strokes so that the edges are straight and smooth. Let the file drift from one end to the other of a long side, whether the head or the tail of the key, so that the edge is evenly rounded over its whole length. Be sure the file is double cut, not single, so that you do not make trails as you move the file. The round edge should be quite modest-- just enough to keep the pianist from catching the fingers on the sharp edge.

Step Four : Last, file the front overhang corners rounded. Again, be conservative, and use your first one done as an example for all the rest. If you need to slow down on this step, use emery boards normally used for finger nail work.

You may have to dress the "notch" slightly, when you are all done, to get a neat appearance.
Now, put the white keys back into the piano with the sharps. Do any of the keys drag on each other? If so, do a little filing, observing the rules above, to make things fit.

Fix a Piano key that sticks

Humidity causes wooden piano parts to warp or swell and is often the culprit behind sticking keys. Start by evaluating the problematic key. These are general guidelines for uprights, not grand pianos.

White keys sticking (warped key slip)

Steps:

If several white keys stick, the key slip may be warped and rubbing against the keys. Unscrew the key slip to loosen it a bit.
Insert cardboard shims between the key slip and the key block (see A). A business card folded in two will also do the trick.
If the keys continue to stick, remove the key slip to insert more shims along the length of the key bed. Keep the shims shorter than 3/4 inch (2 cm) so they don't interfere with key movement.

Key or keys sluggish (swollen keys)

Steps:

If the key slip is not the problem, the key or keys may be swollen. Consider this possibility if it's humid or damp outside.
If a white key is sluggish, press down the key and one of its adjacent keys all the way with your index and middle fingers.
Keep the keys depressed while you insert a screwdriver between them with your other hand (see B). Insert it midway along the wide part of the keys. Make sure the screwdriver's tip is at least 1/4 inch (6 mm) wide and slim enough to fit between the keys. (Image 1)
Twist the screwdriver slightly to nudge the keys apart.
Release the keys. Repeat one more time if necessary.
If a black key is sluggish, press down the black key and an adjacent white key.
Insert the screwdriver about 1/4 inch (6 mm) above the end of the black key's front slope.
Turn the screwdriver very gently to create space between the keys. Keep in mind that the black keys are delicate.

Key or several keys sticking (foreign object)

Steps:

If one or more keys stick, a foreign object (a coin or a paper clip) might be interfering. A paring knife may dislodge the object.
Firmly hold the handle of the paring knife perpendicular to the key bed and insert the blade between two adjacent keys. It will look as if you are stabbing the keys.
Keep the paring knife vertical (perpendicular to the keys) and pull it toward you to clear the space. This often dislodges the object.
If the key continues to stick, you'll need to look inside the piano. Consult your owner's manual to find out how to remove the lid, music shelf, fallboard and fallstrip using a screwdriver. Label the screws as you remove the parts.
Once you've removed the parts, examine the problematic key or keys. If a foreign object is obstructing the key or keys, remove it.
If not, the object may lie underneath the key. Put your finger on the rear of the key to keep it from slipping out as you use your other hand to lift its front about 1/2 inch (12 mm).
While you have the key pulled up, shake it a little to dislodge anything underneath, and then let the key drop back into place.
Reassemble the piano in the following order: first the fallstrip, then the fallboard, then the music shelf, and finally the lid.

Overall Tips:

Call a piano technician if none of these solutions fixes the sticking key. Dozens of possible problems can cause keys to stick.
You can use the paring knife and screwdriver tricks on both upright and grand pianos.
Keep the piano in an environment that's free of humidity to avoid warping and swelling of piano parts. Contact a piano professional about buying a dehumidifier if humidity is unavoidable.

They make great forms for pleasing music, but they also leave a lot of room for improvisation and experimentation. Is It Worth It To Study Music In University?

Many prospective students interested in music production, composition, or performance may be thinking about enrolling in the music department of a major university, but it is worth carefully considering all of your options before making such a big decision.

The benefits may seem clear: you will receive lots of instruction from qualified professors and professionals, you will have access to high quality facilities, and you will be with many other students interested in the same thing and make many contacts. This all sounds great, but there are other considerations. A music school will harp on these advantages. Let’s take a look at the disadvantages.

It would be silly to first talk about anything except cost. A major four year university is going to cost a lot. If you don’t have the money for it, and most do not, it is going to require student loans which allow you to pay for the education but end up making it cost even more in interest. Add to this the overpriced books and other amenities pretty much required on college campuses and you are looking at what can be a staggering amount.

The question for you must be whether it’s worth it. Remember those advantages. Are they worth it?

Well, first of all, the great professors are available outside of universities for the most part. Performers and composers have a long history of individual mentorship and lesson-giving that in many cases may prove even more effective than the normal education of a music major, and it would certainly cost less.

The facilities in most music departments are going to be better than what you have access to personally, but remember that you are indirectly paying a lot to use them. You could easily rent time in a professional recording studio or performance space at a fraction of the cost. Not only that, but many aspects of music technology are getting to the point where anyone can afford them.

Finally, what about all the like-minded people you meet at university? There is no reason you cannot meet them through other means if you think about it. Try a site like meetup.com and get together a music playing group. Look for people to jam with on craigslist. Go to local music venues and see what the scene is. Colleges are not needed to bring people together. There are a million ways musicians can meet each other and form lasting friendships.

It is also worth mentioning that if you go to college in another state you will most likely see much less of the people you knew once college ends and you or they move away.

The only other defense of university music departments may be that you just need a degree sometimes in this world, love it or hate it. There’s some truth to that, but this still does not discount other options. Many music teachers became well known and regarded performers and got in that way. Not all university music professors are PHDs.

And why couldn’t you start your own private music school if teaching music is your goal. Wouldn’t you want some autonomy to advance your own music philosophy rather than be subject to the changing academic fads in the arts and the bureaucracy of it all? Why not give private lessons? Why not start a music website to teach from?

There are a ton of creative ways to make a living with music, but universities do not really try to foster any of these because then less people would go to them, and their income would dry up.

In today’s world, there is not nearly as strong a reason to go to school for a music degree, and many other degrees as well. Think about getting started on your career now, without the debt, without the limits, and without the time and money spent on things which may not prove to be worth it. Above all, make sure that you consider a view point that does not have a vested interest in the matter.

In this day and age downloading music is pretty much ubiquitous with younger people and most music lovers in general, and even though it seems like it may be benefitting to download an album and not have to pay for it, there are consequences. By taking the music for free, not only are you getting around supporting the individual artist, you are also harming the entire music industry as a whole and limiting what future artists will be able to produce.

This argument against downloading music has nothing to do with the fact that it is illegal, or that in some cases people have been prosecuted for it. While those facts are true, the real case against obtaining music for free is a moral and practical one. Let’s start with the moral since it is at the root of the issue and leads to the practical.

Downloading music without paying for it is stealing, there’s no way around it. Whether the government has declared it illegal or not, it is an immoral act. You are taking something that people worked hard on and not paying them what they deserve for it, and the argument that you are only stealing from a big record company doesn’t work either; record companies have employees who are people too, they deserve compensation for their work just like you would expect.

Add to this the fact that it is mostly the smaller record labels that cannot survive plunging record sales, and you can see the problems that are being caused. This is where the moral moves into the practical; the record labels producing new and exiting, less-popular music are having the most trouble, and this means that the music industry is losing what little creativity and drive that it has left.

The issue goes farther than just the record sales though, because labels and bands cannot make money from album sales, they have to raise concert ticket prices. So many of the people downloading albums end up paying more if they want to see a band in concert. This may be fine, but what about the bands who cannot make up the difference by touring? Well, you will probably see less of them around.

An age is coming where more and more individuals and bands will be selling their albums themselves from their own websites or wherever. Can their so-called fans continue to steal from them in this direct fashion? The consequences of downloading music on the more original and exiting artists will become more and more clear, and hopefully, people will see that in this new digital age, some voluntary morality on the part of consumers will be required if they want to continue to have great music in the future.

Unlike many other ancient civilizations, the Greeks recorded, in writing, many of their thoughts and philosophies on music and how it relates to humans. Through them, an interesting view can be gained of how music affected people in the ancient world, and what they thought its purpose was.

Greek mythology held that the earliest musicians were gods such as Apollo, Hermes, Amphion, and Orpheus. The word music itself comes from the mythical concept of the muse. The Greeks made use of music in most aspects of life, from religious ceremonies to military events, and they generally thought of it as an art of enjoyment and a science related to arithmetic and astronomy.

One of the most famous Greeks of all time, Pythagoras, thought that numbers were the key to music, as well as everything else. He was the first to calculate the ratios of common intervals that are the base of musical theory to this day. By dividing a single string, he found that the ratio of an octave was 2:1, a fifth was 3:2, and a fourth was 4:3.

The mathematical nature of music was thought to be a reflection of the order of the universe by the Greeks, going along with their concept of harmonia (parts unified into an orderly whole). This concept helped relate music to astronomy as well. Different writers recorded that musical notes corresponded to the movements and positions of planets, and Plato wrote about the “harmony of the spheres,” the idea that music was produced by the revolutions of planets.

The Pythagorean view held that numbers governed all aspects of the universe and life, and because of this, the numerical nature of music could help keep the soul in balance and affects its inner harmony. Later Greek writers had different ideas about how this worked, but shared the idea that music affected the mind and emotions.

Aristotle wrote that music imitated certain emotions and this created the same emotions in the listener. This is an observation that is obviously true, but Aristotle went further in describing that one should listen to certain types of music to be virtuous, and that listening to the wrong types of music for too long could make one weak and ignoble.

With the ancient Greeks, we get one of the first full views of the role and craft of music. As with every other subject, the Greeks expanded the concepts in instrumental music established before them, and created many new aspects that live on today.

What you can do is build the right amount of compromise and flexibility into your lesson plans so that everyone gets something out of their time. For example, if you want your students to play a short chord progression in unison, allow the ones incapable of playing chords to just play the bass note. It’s important to just get everyone playing something musical, so they get a taste for it and are motivated to practice.

If you can, it helps to get the students playing music that they like, but this may not always be possible in a class. One strategy that might work is to play a different style each lesson, and you can also try to choose generic pieces that should appeal to just about anyone in the class, no matter their age or tastes.

Something else that can make the lessons fun and interesting is to have a contest between the students to see who can memorize a melody or the notes of the guitar strings. Have a simple reward and get a good natured competition going that will drive the student to practice more and get them enjoying themselves during the lesson.

Music history is an important subject for any musician or composer who hopes to perfect their craft and produce the best music possible. Not only can it help you get a better historical understanding of music and its purpose, but it can also help you understand the structure of musical systems and how they can be used. This is very important information for anyone looking to make a living or hobby out of making music, so it stands that a long-term study of music history should be undertaken. With this in mind, how should one go about structuring and motivating their study of music history?

One of the biggest mistakes with the study of any subject is to force one’s self through it. Many people will not move onto other books or subjects until they have completed what they are on, and this is a bad strategy in the long run. When you are bored by a subject you will not really be absorbing the information and considering it as you should. Take boredom to be a sign that you are “full” of a given subject for the time being.

Of course, there are sometimes when circumstances dictate that something must be learned or done within a certain time period, and in those cases, you can only try to motivate yourself as much as possible to get it done, but when studying something on your own, always follow your subconscious interests.

So if you want to make a plan of learning more music history, follow what you are interested in at the time. Don’t just start at the beginning and continue working your way through, unless interested of course. This kind of strict chronological study may seem rational, but what you gain in order you lose in passion, motivation, and greater understanding of the material.

If you want to start learning more music history today, and also happen to currently be interested in the middle ages, start with medieval lute music or whatever most catches your attention in that area. Study it for as long as it interests you and move on to something else when it no longer does. For example, if medieval lute music picks your interest in the foundations of instrumental music, start looking back at that subject.

You cannot learn all of music history in any short amount of time, and just trying to cram through it in one sweep will accomplish little. Take the time to really understand and integrate the areas of it that interest you, and use that to build a good general understanding of all of musical history.

This general strategy of study can also apply to practicing an instrument as well, or studying anything for that matter. Let your interests guide you and do not feel duty-bound to anything in particular. Sound, it must be remembered, is made up of a series of waves. Sound waves, like all waves, have peaks and troughs. The time between one peak and the next (or between any point on the wave and the next corresponding point) is one wave cycle.

When we record a sound source with two microphones in recording studios, those two microphones will pick up a similar wave pattern. However the difference in the placement of the microphones means that the waves are likely to be at a different point in their wave cycle when they reach the microphones. For example, microphone one might receive the peak of the wave at the same time microphone two receives the trough. The waves are now said to be out of phase.

In practical terms, this means a loss of sound information as the out of phase waves “cancel” each other out somewhat. The effect of phasing on sound is often described as “thin” or “weak”, and is not just a loss of volume.

This can be fixed simply with correct microphone placement. Most microphone preamps have a phase switch, which switches the phase of a microphone by 180 degrees (peaks become troughs and vice versa). Flick this switch. Now adjust the microphone placements until the sound is at its weakest. At this point they are as far out of phase as possible (in antiphase). Flick the switch again. Your microphones should be perfectly in phase!

This song will be used to mark your progress. Don’t pick an ultra-high song like Celine Dion or Bon Jovi. Just the usual mid-range fare from Top 40. Unless, of course, you’ve mastered the mid-range stuff and are ready to graduate to the higher registers.

Step 1: get your tongue relaxed. Do you remember your last visit to the dentist? If you’re having your tooth removed, chances are the dentist would numb you out first. If he doesn’t, find a new dentist. When he numbs out the area around the teeth, the tongue would get numbed out too. Remember how it felt to try and speak in that state? Revisit that time.

Exercise a: Relax your tongue and sing a descending note from the highest pitch you’re comfortable with. Do this 10 times and feel how all the work is being done by the vocal chords. You’ll feel it, trust me.

Exercise b: Then do ten times ascending to your highest comfortable pitch from speaking voice.

Step 2: feeling the connected voice. Say the word “sing”. Now drop the “si” and go straight to the “ng”. Sustain the sound for a few seconds: “nnnngggggg”. Now do the same as with exercise a descending to the most comfortable high note. Repeat 10 times. Now do it with exercise b with the ascending tones 10 times. Feel the vocal chords being really worked out. Now let’s do a fun experiment. You’re familiar with the times when you try to sing high and a yelling sound pulls up? Sounds horrible and embarrassing, right? Try doing it with the “ng” sound. Can’t do it? Interesting, huh?

Step 3: freeing the voice. Do the “ng” sound with the ascending tones. This time, when you reach the highest note, alternate the “ng” with the vowel “ah”. Don’t worry if it sounds nasally, it’s a gradual thing. Do it 10 times. After 10 reps, try to gradually convert the “ng” from the nasally sound to full voice. You might surprise yourself at this point.

Step 4: checking progress. Go back to the song and sing it. Remember how the connected voice feels, and really go for it. Don’t shout, don’t force, just sing. You did it with the stupid sound, you can do it in a song. How does it feel? You just freed your voice a step further! Congratulations. You can make this part of your daily warm-up if you like =D

Step 5: Express yourself. Isn’t this the reason you want to learn how to sing in the first place? I’ll give you a mantra to get started on this one: “Express, not Impress!”

Repeat this to yourself everyday until you get your desired vocal range. Proceed to wow audiences with your technical powers.
