Aric of Dacia readies to meet the Vine at its very root on the planet Loam. But before taking on Planet Death, this man out of time, must defend a world far removed from his own Visigoth heritage. Aric is the first man to wield the armor of the X-O Manowar, and he’s Earth’s last line of defense against an alien invasion force who desperately want that weapon back. This week we speak to writer Robert Venditti about capturing the voice of a displaced Visigoth and leading Valiant’s vanguard into the modern day.

Punch it, Chewie! We kick off 2013 with a big Don't Miss dedicated to a very big book. Writer Brian Wood takes us back to a time long ago in a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars #1, an all new story set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back! The Death Star is in pieces, but the Rebel Alliance is still holding itself together with duct tape. Darth Vader gets demoted! Leia hops into an X-Wing! And the family tree is still a little shady. Join us as we talk to Wood about his larger-than-life 2012, the decision to take this iconic licensed property adjectiveless, Disney's acquisition of LucasFilm, and the bounty of Wookiepedia.

Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore absolutely demolished expectations with the loser-to-bruiser mini-series The Strange Talent of Luther Strode. Now they and their masked juggernaut are back for the next chapter with this week’s The Legend of Luther Strode #1. The lanky teenager we met a year ago has more than mastered the training techniques from that mail order fitness program. He bulked up and lost nearly everything he cared about in the process. Five years on, the legend of his abilities–and just how he’s putting them to violent use–has spread. Who’s taken an active interest in our troubled hero, and what is their endgame?

We spoke to writer Justin Jordan about the method to the mayhem. What does he hope to say about the ubiquity of violence in comics and about power fantasies in general? What does tomorrow hold for Luther and those he loves? Hold a bag of frozen peas to your noggin and press play.

iFanboy: Don't Miss #119 - Harbinger #6 with Joshua Dysart

Jim Shooter chronicled the psionic tug-of-war between Peter "Sting" Stanchek and the enigmatic Toyo Harada for over 40 issues in the early 90s. Nearly 20 years later, Valiant Entertainment is back, and with it, an all new interpretation of Harbinger. We spoke to series writer Joshua Dysart about his new vision for the iconic struggle between two impossibly powerful men equipped with the full range of telekinetic abilities.

In each new issue of the "Renegade" arc, starting with this week's Harbinger #6, latent fans will meet Peter's allies in the war against Harada's ubiquitous corporation and its legion of psionic warriors. We'll also see the Valiant universe as its never been seen before, rendered by a new artist each chapter. And, geez, what a sensational list of artists it is.

Things are about to get mental.

ALL-NEW ARC! From out of the ashes – RENEGADES!

After a crushing defeat at the hands of his would-be mentor, Peter Stanchek lies critically wounded and the only person who can save him is the person that hates him the most – his childhood love Kris Hathaway. As Harada’s Eggbreaker strike force closes in, the helpless Peter wonders if he is going to find forgiveness at Kris’s door – or unbridled vengeance. But when Faith returns as the superhero she’s always dreamed of being, the game is going to change for everyone involved…

Walter Simonson is an actual living and working legend in comics, and the good news is that he doesn’t seem like he’s close to done. The man draws and writes this original graphic novel, The Judas Coin, which works a bit like an anthology that spans distant corners of the DC Universe, following the cursed payment for the betrayal of Christ, but also featuring Batman. Simonson is still very much pushing and challenging himself with comics at a point in his career where many would just sit back and put it on cruise control, and it’s incredibly inspiring.

DC Comics’ line of one-shots re-imagining some of its more obscure heroes for modern readers continues this week with National Comics: Looker #1. Paul sits down with writer Ian Edginton to discuss Emily Briggs, an undead supermodel who puts the “vamp” in vampire. Eternal youth might seem like a major boon for a glamourous pinup, but what if that gift also comes with the inability to cast a reflection or show up in photographs? How does the stunning Ms. Briggs explain her sudden reluctance to prance and pose on the catwalk? And will she ultimately use her newfound powers for good or ill?

iFanboy: Don't Miss #109 - Untold Tales of Punisher MAX #3 with Megan Abbott

The Marvel MAX iteration of Frank Castle may have met his maker earlier this year, but a guy like that is bound to leave behind a lockbox or two, right? This week faithful readers inherit a lost case file from our dearly departed Punisher. Untold Tales of Punisher MAX #3 is a one-and-done story from crime writer Megan Abbott and artist Matteo Baffagni. Paul talks to the author about making the jump to comics and coaxing Frank Castle’s long shadow to the tranquil suburbs. What film noir masterworks inspired Abbott’s vision, and what other seedy comic locales would she like to visit in the future? All this, plus Abbott’s woefully unpublished debut for the defunct Vertigo Crime line and the prospect of Punisher vs….high school cheerleaders?

And don’t miss Megan Abbott’s new prose novel Dare Me, in stores now.

iFanboy: Don't Miss #107 - A Once Crowded Sky with Tom King

Tom King didn’t write a comic book. He wrote a book. But it’s not a book about comic books. It’s a book that’s about what a lot of comic books are about: superheroes. In that book, he does have comics, drawn by none other than Tom Fowler, one of the resident geniuses in comics.

Before being an author, King held the following positions: intern for Vertigo Comics, assistant to Chris Claremont, CIA counterterrorism officer. Yes, those are all true. And yet now, he’s written the story of a world where the superheroes have all given up their powers, and become less magnificent, and more mundane. Clearly the skies are no longer crowded.

It’s a novel unlike any you’ve ever read before, but it’s not just a comic book story converted to prose. It’s also a much more beautiful package than a lot of novels you’ll see on the shelves.

Paul talks to Eric Trautmann, Brandon Jerwa and Steve Lieber about the intensely personal war story, Shooters. When a harrowing friendly fire incident sends American soldier Terry Glass home from Iraq with a medal he never wanted, his transition to civilian life isn’t as smooth as anyone had hoped. Can he find solace with his wife and young daughter, or is Terry forever clouded by the fog of war. It’s a brutal, candid portrait of a modern warrior you definitely won’t want to miss.

The British Empire is dead. Long live her undead hordes! It’s the dawn of the twentieth century and London’s upper crust is applying liberal amounts of zinc cream to stave off utter annihilation. Decades after the Memorial War with the shambling undead of low society, the blue bloods have preserved their storied heritage by voluntarily becoming vampires. With very few pulses racing in either of London’s class zones, Scotland Yard is down to its last homicide detective. But the humdrum life of C.I. George Suttle is about to get much more interesting, as a fellow vampire turns up dead. Really dead. Paul talks to writer Dan Abnett about a refreshing new take on the vampire and zombie sub-genre as only Britain could deliver.

Returned to the waking world, Arcadia is left with the horrific memory of abduction and less than 24 hours to decide what to do with such knowledge. Does she tell her staff? Does she tell the world? Paul Montgomery talks to writer Paul Cornell about the history, mythology and culture of swamp gas and weather balloons, the collision of Americana and paranoia at the heart of Saucer Country.

Lost in the Henson archives for decades, this very personal project is finally brought to life in a stunning graphic novel. This week we talk to Archaia Entertainment’s editor in chief Stephen Christy and artist Ramon Perez about the strange journey of happenstance that brought Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand from a forgotten drawer to widespread acclaim from comic fans worldwide.

Traveling through Arizona with his parents, writer Ben Truman got to thinking about scalps and the men who’d lost them. Had anyone ever survived a scalping? It’s a lurid question, but a perfectly reasonable one to ask Ben’s dad. Timothy Truman is well-versed in the darkest tales of the American west. He’s scripted and pencilled stories for legendary gunslingers like the Lone Ranger, Jonah Hex and real-life outlaw Simon Girty. Tim had an answer for Ben, and they spent the rest of the ride planning the adventures of a scalpless old buzzard known as Kit Hawken and the ghosts at his heels. This week, Paul talks to the father and son creative team about their savage new shoot-em-up. You definitely won’t want to miss Hawken #1.

The Shade stole the show in Robinson’s epic run on Starman in the 1990s, and we got a taste of what life was like today for The Shade in Blackest Night: Starman #81 and recent (pre The New 52) issues of Justice League of America. With this first issue, Robinson teams up with Cully Hamner to begin a year long adventure that will take The Shade out of Opal City and into the world, as well as reveal his origin.

James Robinson chats with us about this first issue which is in stores Wednesday, along with what to expect from the entire series, story and artist wise, in this candid discussion about The Shade #1!

iFanboy: Don't Miss #78 - The Last of the Greats #1 with Joshua Hale Fialkov

Some might say that the world doesn’t need a new ongoing superhero series, but writer Joshua Fialkov thinks he can prove them wrong. After doing all sorts of dark, twisted things in other genres of comics, Fialkov is bringing his mind to the world of superpowers, and The Last of the Greats #1 is the result. When the world needs the help of the one superbeing who can save them, it’s going to take a lot of convincing, since humanity was responsibly for killing all the others like him. He’s holding a grudge. Fialkov tells us all about it, and then lets you know that you have no idea what to expect.

It also just so happens that you can read almost the entire first issue right here before you make it to the shop.

In a month of an avalanche of new #1 issues of comics, we take the spotlight away from DC Comics and all their new #1s and take a look at a new ongoing series from Image Comics, Near Death #1. Written by Jay Faerber with art by Simone Guglielmini, Near Death is a promising new crime series with a unique spin on the crime genre. Unlike the noir crime comics we’ve read recently, Near Death has a more action feel to it and is one of the best new issues we’ve seen in a while.

As we slide into week #2 of the DC Relaunch, one of the titles I’ve been the most anticipating is Grifter #1by Nathan Edmondson and Cafu. As far as I can tell from the various images we’ve seen, Grifter appears to be the main Wildstorm character getting the biggest push (i.e. His appearance along with the Justice League in the pages of Flashpoint #5 most notably). When I read Grifter #1 while visiting DC Comics’ offices, my initial thought was that it wasn’t what I expected and I really did enjoy it. I did have questions for writer Nathan Edmondson though and got the opportunity to talk to him for this episode of iFanboy – Don’t Miss.

Be sure to check out the exclusive preview of Grifter #1 on iFanboy.com

The NEW DC 52 is here, and Jeff Lemire is here to tell us about the debut issue of Animal Man #1. Buddy Baker (Animal Man) and his family have been through a lot since Buddy got his powers, but now there are events happening that will change everything we knew about the Baker clan. Jeff Lemire tells us about writing in the shadow of Grant Morrison's landmark Vertigo series and how his Animal Man is different, but respectful to the history of one of DC's most revered cult characters. He also talks about his collaborations with Scott Snyder, with some good natured ribbing thrown in. The New DC is here, and you definitely don't want to miss this conversation with one of comics rising talents or Animal Man #1.

June 6, 2011 - We're doubling up Don't Miss this week, with 2 books that deserve your eyeballs and patronage. Hold on for two very different takes on horror. Don't Miss either of them!

First up, Christopher Sebela tells us about Screamland #1 from Image Comics. Continuing a mini series from a few years back, the now-ongoing book takes a look at a Hollywood where the monsters are real, not just actors. Except they're just like actors. But times have gotten tougher for them, as CGI and modern tastes have made it harder to get good work for Wolf Man, the Fish Monster, and others. Sebela is co-writing this satirical look at Hollywood and the horror movie genre with original series creator Harold Sipe.

Next up, Scott Snyder is with us talking about American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #1 from Vertigo. This mini series focuses on the European theater in WWII (as the main series is in the Pacific right now), as Cash McCogan and Felicia Book fight Nazis. Of course, there are vampires and secrets and all that good stuff, but there is also the sublime Sean Murphy on art duties. Scott tells us all about what to expect with the mini-series.

We also talk about how the writer keeps coming back to these Japanese Samurai stories in all their forms.
May 23, 2011 - Running Time: 00:26:07 - This week Paul talks to Justin Gray, co-writer with Jimmy Palmiotti on acclaimed DC titles like Jonah Hex, Power Girl, and Freedom Fighters. The pair have also written some wildly inventive creator owned works like the slasher thriller Random Acts of Violence (being adapted for the big screen by actor Jay Baruchel) and the time travel adventure Time Bomb. Their latest indie creation is The Tattered Man, a one-shot horror story with seeds in the Holocaust. David is not the typical superhero, but the vengeful powers he's imbued with aren't quite so mild mannered themselves. Justin also talks about the methods of inspiring fear and dread on the comics page, the horrific scenes he's been able to get away with in Jonah Hex, and an upcoming western/sci-fi mashup called Trailblazer.

iFanboy: Don't Miss #63 - Batman Incorporated #6 with Chris Burnham

May 9, 2011 - "More Reasons Why Batman: Incorporated #6 is a DON'T MISS!"

By Chris Burnham (age 33)

- It's a basically stand-alone story that also serves as a sort of prologue to the next arc of Batman: Incorporated If you stopped reading the book after the first couple of issues, or even if you're coming in fresh, you should be totally fine. Brief primer: Leviathan is the bad guy. Batman is recruiting a team of international Batmen and Batwomen to fight him. The public thinks that Bruce Wayne has been funding Batman for years but doesn't know that he IS Batman. Now you're up to speed!

- Fans of Red Robin will be kicking themselves for months if they miss this issue. And even people that aren't jazzed about him yet will be excited to see what's next for Tim.

- You want detailed backgrounds? You got 'em!

- Colorist Nathan Fairbairn knocked it out of the park. Take note, Photoshoppers, this is how it's done!

Listen in as Will Pfeifer reminisces about writing this satirical look at college life in the pre-9/11 world. With art by Barry Kitson and others, it certainly sounds like it could be a very thought provoking exploration of the way governments and militaries work in the Marvel Universe. Take a listen, and Don't Miss Iron Man 2.0 #1.

Writer Jeff Lemire explores the life of Smallville's new favorite son, and the relationships he has with it's residents in Superboy. In this episode of Don't Miss, Lemire talks about how his previous works including the award winning Essex County from Top Shelf Comics have influenced his take on Smallville, not just as a setting, but as it's own character.

Talking pets are paranormal, right? Hellboy deals with paranormal stuff, so it's only natural that the two Dark Horse properties would team up. And so it shall happen, this Wednesday. Mike Mignola and Evan Dorkin team up on the story, while our guest, multi-Eisner Award winner, Jill Thompson provides the art in the way that only her talented skills can. It is not easy to get dogs to emote on paper, nor make it believable that they'd team up with everyone's favorite demon monster hunter, but Thompson does it, and makes it look so good. Check out this one-shot release at your shop and don't miss Hellboy/Beasts of Burden.

Williamson is a name you'll become more familiar with in the coming months. Known for his work on Image Comics' Dear Dracula and Overlook, he's had some short stories published by Marvel and DC, but this is his first full issue published by DC Comics.
iFanboy: Don't Miss #13 - Supergirl #50 with Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle

February 15, 2010 - This week's Don't Miss book is the landmark 50th issue of Supergirl. One of the great things about comics can be the long history and deep continuity that characters develop. But that same continuity can also stand as a roadblock to new readers. Supergirl has been one of those characters in the past, but now Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle have turned the cousin of everyone's favorite Kryptonian into an accessible, interesting and ultimately entertaining character in the DC landscape. Gates and Igle join Chris Neseman for a conversation about the challenges and rewards of working on the Supergirl title. Listen in to hear about the "relay race" of the New Krypton event, Helen Slator and Jake Black's back-up story, and a great behind the scenes story about the Michael Turner cover for the 50th issue.

 - Gage and Costa talk about how their relationship as co-writers came about and how IDW and Hasbro have been open to just about every crazy idea they've come up with.

 - Both writers talk about the thrill of contributing to the Joe franchise and working with Chuck Dixon and the "Stan Lee" of G.I. Joe, Larry Hama.

Talksplode: Don't Miss #9 - Starman #81 with James Robinson

January 18, 2010 - When they announced the resurrected titles for Blackest Night this month, we were all shocked to see Starman #81 as one of the books being resurrected. The legendary run of Starman by James Robinson was one of the best comics of the 1990s, and one of his personal favorites. We never thought we'd see another issue, so the idea of how Robinson planned to return to Opal City and why was one of our foremost questions.

Ron caught up with James Robinson to hear about Starman #81 and in the conversation some interesting bits of news and information came out:

 - Robinson would like to do a comic series, perhaps a mini series, focused purely on the Shade, a character he developed in detail in the run of Starman

 - In the upcoming issues of Justice League of America, the character Mikaal (also from the Starman family) will assume the mantle of Starman

So take a listen to hear that as well as all the reasons why you should pick up Starman #81 in comic book stores this week!
