Following up Chad’s blogs on inspirational musicians, I thought I’d share a few of my own influences.

I’m not making a case for “best bassists” but rather, just a few among many that inspire me and whose style has influenced my playing.

Jared Followill (Kings of Leon) is becoming one of my favorite bassists. In my opinion a good bass-line in a rock song will be unique and help define the overall song, rather than just mimicking the guitar rhythm. Followill adds a distinct character to Kings of Leon’s overall sound, and lately I’ve been learning some of his lines off of the Only by the Night album to help improve my own writing. An example is Manhattan from that album, which has a bass line almost completely separate from the guitar. It’s not too fancy but it’s perfect for the song, and personally, I don’t know if I’d even like this song much without this bass-line in it. It’s hard to believe he only learned to play the bass just one month before recording Kings of Leon’s first studio album!

John Paul Jones is another favorite from pretty much my all-time favorite band Led Zeppelin. I’ve been trying to get better at improvising, and learning blues progressions has helped a lot. Zeppelin’s Lemon Song is a perfect example. I don’t know for sure but I bet Jones didn’t even write most of his line before recording this; he probably made most of it up on the spot and I doubt he played it exactly the same each time they performed it live.

Cliff Burton, Metallica’s first bass player (who died on tour in a bus accident) was a huge influence for me in becoming a rhythmically tight bassist. Also, anytime I’ve taken a solo in an IFD performance, the heavy distorted wah sound you hear was influenced by Burton’s Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) bass solo.

As you may know by now, Clarence Clemons (aka the Big Man), saxophonist in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, passed away today.

I'm actually not a big Bruce fan (yet - I'm working on it), but Clarence has always had a special place in my heart.

You see, when I was a kid my video obsession (you know, the tape you would play over and over and over until it wore out) was a home-recorded VHS of a Grateful Dead show that was broadcast live on Pay-Per-View on 6/21/89. My parents, lifelong 'Heads, got a copy from a friend of theirs and when my 4-year-old eyes first set on it my life was changed forever. I could go on for way too long about this magical tape (maybe I will in another post someday) but I'll just say for now that I pretty much watched that tape every waking hour between the ages of 4 and 7, and it's basically the main thing that made me want to be a musician. Hell, I still watch it a couple times a year just for inspiration, especially if I'm sick or otherwise feeling down.

Anyway, early in the 2nd set Clarence shows up on stage, seemingly out of nowhere, and jams with the boys for the rest of the show. He doesn't rock out super hard or play anything particularly flashy, but just seeing the band have a friend of theirs just hop on and hang and play and have a good time was really influential. It showed me what a social, shared activity playing music was, and inspired me to embrace the idea of playing with anybody at any time. You could even say that the open-mindedness I learned from Clarence's cameo is why 20 years later I said yes to this stranger named Brian who randomly called me one time asking if I wanted to play drums for some gigs...

So thanks Big Man, I hope you're already gettin' down on some jams wherever you are.

Now, I'm not saying I find any of this stuff particularly musical (though the first video has some redeeming qualities) but the sheer athleticism of it is definitely entertaining. And often these guys look really goofy, so that's fun.

Tosin Abasi is a superbadass. I just started listening to his band Animals As Leaders and ths stuff is just silly. He plays 8-string guitars for maximum low-end brutality and wears remarkable clothes. I'm pretty sure the Devil himself dresses this good and plays this fast. Bonus points for slapping at 2:50

Frank Gambale is an Australian weirdo who plays hilariously fast speed-picking licks that make you question your own mortality (not if but when, maybe now?). This song is so cheesy it makes my teeth cleaner (via wanting to avoid the dentist's office), so you can just skip ahead to like 3:15 where the fun really begins. His arpeggios sound quite a bit like some Mario Getting Big action. Sweet. He does have some interesting instructional videos about his sweep-picking technique, from which I've gotten a few ideas. Check out the 2nd half of the She's Got Sorcery solo for some clunky sweep-picking. Jesus, I need to practice.

Anyway, speaking of instructional videos, check out Michael Angelo Batio advertising his instructional DVD, titled SPEED KILLS. Why would you put out an instructional video on how to play speed guitar, then tell the potential buyer in no uncertain terms that it absolutely will kill them? Shut up, marketing department.

I won't even bother detailing how stupid this guy looks, but homie sure can play really f'n fast. Oh yeah, and at 2:55 it looks like some kind of sped-up Wayne's world shit. Also note that he's got 29 frets. That's too many frets.

Check out some other videos of this dude playing his 4-neck. That thing's beyond ridiculous, and I really don't appreciate it.

Anyway, enjoy?
