Graphic Designer

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks an entry-level Graphic Designer for the Communications Division. The successful candidate will design a wide range of print and online materials, including publications (such as books, briefs, reports, brochures, flyers, e-publications, and others), displays (such as banners, signs, and slideshows), branding, packaging, multimedia materials, infographics, and design elements for web pages. This position will also be responsible for maintaining and promoting the IFPRI brand through these designs and via additional outlets. This is for a one-year, fixed term, exempt, renewable appointment based in Washington, DC.

Essential Duties:

Create designs and layouts for a wide range of materials (see above) based on standard layout principles and aesthetic design concepts, using Adobe Create Suite software on PC platform, as well as some Microsoft Office products.
Develop graphics, vector illustrations, branding, charts, graphs, infographics, artwork, and web-based design elements (for example, webpage banners).
Lay out a range of publications in Adobe InDesign, using existing templates or by developing templates appropriate to the project.
Confer with internal and external project leaders, authors, and IFPRI Communications staff to conceptualize, brainstorm, and create designs that are well suited to individual project needs and various target audiences, including policymakers, researchers, donors, NGOs, organizations in developing countries, and the general public.
Route proofs for review, input non-text changes, ensure accuracy of all design elements, and prepare final output for print and web.
Engage in a streamlined workflow and work efficiently to meet tight deadlines.
Contribute to the way IFPRI is represented to its audiences by adhering to existing IFPRI branding guidelines; enhance and promote the IFPRI brand globally.
Collaborate with vendors, contractors, and freelancers, and manage projects as needed.

Postdoctoral Fellow - Malawi

Job Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) for a two (2) year, fixed term, renewable appointment for its Development Strategy and Governance Division (DSDG). Working within a multidisciplinary research team the PDF will contribute to the Strengthening Evidence-Based Agricultural Policy (SEBAP) project in Malawi by conducting research and capacity building activities.

The PDF will be expected to perform various tasks, ranging from analysis of household survey data to sector performance evaluation. The PDF will also play a leading role in supporting capacity building in the field of monitoring and evaluation and agricultural statistics. This position is based at IFPRI’s Malawi Strategy Support Program (MaSSP) located in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Essential Duties:

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

· Conducting microeconomic research through analysis of primary or secondary household survey data and agricultural sector statistics using advanced econometric techniques.

Head of Web Communications

The Communications Division (COM) of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a Head of Web Communications to manage the IFPRI websites and web communications. This position is for a two-year, fixed-term, exempt, renewable appointment, based at IFPRI headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Essential Duties:

Manage the running of the websites under the domains and platforms IFPRI.ORG (Drupal) and IFPRI.INFO (Wordpress)—currently serving around 500,000 users per year and involving over 30 websites and 50 web authors
Oversee the development of websites and sections of sites with the internal web team and using external consultants
Oversee the posting and featuring of appropriate content onto the websites through the website managers and communication liaison officers in the research divisions of IFPRI
Develop, recommend and implement web communications strategies, policies, and procedures
Undertake in-depth analysis of site use to inform website promotion strategies
Identify and assess new web technology trends and when appropriate incorporate into IFPRI’s web communications strategy

Essential Duties

The Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Fellow will mainly contribute to the “policy” component of the Impact and Policy team by investigating the importance of poor dietary quality in driving malnutrition in developing countries. Essential duties include:

· Use available primary level data, advanced micro-econometric methods and partial equilibrium models to investigate:

o the factors affecting micronutrient food consumption and changes in the micronutrient aspects of diets of the poor over time

o the relationship between intra-household inequality in food distribution and nutritional outcomes

o the differences/similarities between 24-hour recall data on food intakes to 7-day recall of food expenditures and consumption at the household level

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to fill the position of Research Analyst for a two-year, exempt, fixed-term, renewable appointment. This position will report to the CPR4 Director. The Research Analyst will work with the Director and Senior Research Fellow and other CRP4 research teams and assist them in data analysis and background research for research papers, books, briefs and research projects on agriculture for improving human nutrition and health. This position is based in the Washington, DC, headquarters of IFPRI.

Research Fellow

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Fellow and IFPRI – Agricultural Transformation (ATA) Program Coordinator for a two year, fixed-term, renewable appointment. The position will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and reports to the Director of the Development Strategy and Governance Division. Grade level will be determined by demonstrated expertise and experience.

IFPRI is providing technical support to Ethiopia’s Agricultural Transformation Agency, a newly established government agency charged with promoting agricultural transformation by supporting existing structures of government, private-sector and other non-governmental partners to address systemic bottlenecks and deliver on a priority national agenda to achieve growth and food security. IFPRI’s support includes technical research, capacity building and policy communications activities. Key research and capacity strengthening activities will be carried out with a broad array of agricultural sector stakeholders, including the Ministry of Agriculture, concerned regional government departments, key Ethiopian research institutes and universities, and selected private sector and nongovernmental organizations.

Essential Duties:

The Fellow will be responsible for a) conducting research, policy advice, capacity strengthening and policy communications in Ethiopia and b) coordinating research, capacity strengthening and policy communications activities between IFPRI and the Agricultural Transformation Agency. It is anticipated that the Fellow will allocate about 50% time to program management and 50% of time to research and capacity-building activities. The Fellow will be responsible for the timely completion of research projects, actively publishing papers/books, and participating in various conferences, policy advisory forums, and capacity strengthening training programs. The leadership role includes the following responsibilities:

· Program management: The Fellow works with the IFPRI-ATA Project Manager to oversee management of IFPRI-ATA research, capacity strengthening and communications activities in Ethiopia. S/he will oversee IFPRI-ATA office staff, manage program resources, oversee the updating of annual work programs, report against annual performance targets, and maintain regular communication with IFPRI-Washington. In addition, s/he will recruit national collaborators and help to manage and monitor national collaborator and IFPRI researcher activities.

· Research/Capacity Building. Based on identified program of work, the Fellow leads or participates in specific empirical research, supports targeted training programs, and oversees Washington-based and in-country staff on specific research and training activities that fall within the country program.

· Policy Communication and Liaison: The Fellow maintains active policy communication with national counterparts through a face-to-face meetings, regular research seminar series, policy briefs and working paper series; establishing active links with various national research institutions, universities, and government agencies; reports program outputs and results; and liaises with donors on a regular basis.

· Fundraising/Resource Mobilization: Through an active in-country presence, the Fellow identifies additional research funding opportunities, responds to in-country needs, channels donor resources to available skills and expertise in IFPRI, and liaises between non-country program IFPRI activities and local donors, if needed (and requested).

Position Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as Senior Research Fellow/ Seeds Program in its Environment and Production Technology Division (EPTD). This is a two-year, fixed term, exempt, renewable appointment based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The candidate will work in the newly-created Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA), which is an initiative of the Government of Ethiopia (GOE) with the primary aim of promoting agricultural sector transformation by supporting existing structures of government, private-sector and other non-governmental partners to address systemic bottlenecks and deliver on a priority national agenda to achieve growth and food security.

The formation of the ATA is a result of two years of extensive diagnostic study across eight sub-sectors of Ethiopia’s agricultural system in a highly-consultative, multi-stakeholder process. Its structure and function is focused on nimble, innovative and results-oriented support to a range of partners in the agricultural sector.

Programmatically, the ATA will focus on a set of high priority initiatives identified by an inter-ministerial Council chaired by the Prime Minister. There are expected to be approximately 6-7 initial areas of focus, including seeds, markets/cooperatives, technology access and adoption and extension and research. Across the thematic initiatives, the ATA engages public, private and non-governmental stakeholders to support strategic planning, manage and strengthen implementation capacity and test innovative models. The ATA will be financed by GOE and a range of development partners.

The Senior Research Fellow will have primary responsibility for developing, implementing and supporting a portfolio of initiatives to improve the quality and availability of improved seeds for key crops in Ethiopia. The successful candidate will possess a passion for improving the lives of small-holder farmers and an extensive knowledge of Ethiopia’s seed system.
