Today Apple will be having their annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote, and with this keynote usually comes announcements of exciting new products and service from the trendy gadget maker.

This year I believe will be no different, we already know that Apple will be announcing their new Mac operating system called Mac OSX Lion, the new iOS 5 operating system for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and their new cloud music service called iCloud.

Apart from the things we already know will be launched, Apple usually has something exciting to announce and who knows maybe we will see them announcing the new iPhone 5 or iPhone 4GS as some has reported.

A few weeks back Apple announced at their annual WWDC that the new Mac Operating System, Max OS X Lion, would only be available in digital form from their Mac Store.

Like iOS upgrades the Max OS X Lion upgrade also comes in at a hefty size, a 4GB download infact, the problem with this is not everybody has high speed internet or caps that high, even in the United States.

Apple has however seen this as a problem and are offering consumers free WiFi access at iStores to upgrade their Max OS to Mac OS X Lion. No word yet on whether South Africans will also be able to upgrade their Max OS for free at local iStore’s, I have also reached out to Digicape but have not received any word yet on whether they will give customers free WiFi access for the upgrade.

I am glad to see that Apple are actually passing the savings on to their consumers this way, as they are saving on packaging by distributing Mac OS X Lion digitally. I do however not see customers unplugging their iMac’s and Mac Pro’s and taking it to stores to upgrade, MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro users would be the ones that would benefit from this.

Normally when news of a new tablet hits the web the first thing people talk about is its specs and operating system, well this time it is different.

Archos, a company that has released several Android and Windows powered tablets are yet to make it big in the tablet market with one of its devices, but the company is making news with the announcement of a new tablet.

The new Arnova 7 tablet comes in at a mere $99 or R700 and the company hopes that this will put them on the map. One can’t expect much from a R700 tablet, but in places like Africa where users can only afford feature phones, this R700 tablet from Archos could be a huge hit.

Spec wise the tablet is not much to brag about, featuring a 7″ 800×400 screen, 4GB of internal storage and capable of 720p video playback running on Android Froyo 2.2 and WiFi. There are also no word yet on the specs of the CPU or how much RAM the Arnova 7 tablet has, but one thing is for sure – it has no cameras, like one would expect for that price. Disappointedly the Arnova 7 also have no access to the Android Market, but rather a custom market place called the AppsLib app store.

How disappointed one may be with the specs of the device, you can not deny the price. The price tag of $99 for the Arnova 7 makes it really appealing to 3rd word countries, such as Kenya where a $99 Android smartphone was recently introduced and proven to be a huge hit. The new tablet from Archos could just be the device that 3rd world countries need to introduce tablets into their markets.

No word yet on when the Archos 7 will start shipping and what countries will get the device first, but I think Archos would be foolish not to introduce this tablet to the African markets.

8ta, South Africa’s newest cellular operator has just dropped the bomb on rival cellphone network operators by introducing the cheapest mobile broadband package available in South Africa.

The new 8ta deal called Internet 5 will give subscribers access to 10GB of bandwidth at only R199 per month, and for an additional R100 users can get another 10GB that can be used between 12AM and 5AM.

This new deal from 8ta undercuts the current deals by Cell C, MTN and Vodacom that offers customers a mere 2GB of bandwidth per month for R149, by a large margin.

The 10GB package from 8ta for R199 per month will be available at all 8ta flagship stores from 26 June 2011, users will need to sign a 24 month contract and the deal is only applicable on 8ta base stations and not where 8ta uses MTN coverage to serve its customers.

To see if you are covered for the 8ta 10GB package see the Internet 5 coverage map.

If you are an Apple fanatic then you have by now heard of the Apple TV, if you are not, well the Apple TV is essentially Apple’s answer to the media player in you living room.

The Apple TV is a small device you hook up to your HD (High Definition) television through an HDMI cable and then allow you to access media such as Movies, Music and Podcast through WiFi on you iTunes enabled PC’s and even allows you to use AirPlay, Apple’s proprietary feature that allows you to stream content from your Apple iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad wireless with the single touch of a screen.

Misplaced or lost your Apple TV remove, or are just too lazy to stand up to go get it, no worries. Apple allows you to control the Apple TV from your iPhone or iPad. If you are too lazy to pick up the remote to control the Apple TV, simply get out your iPhone or iPad and then control the Apple TV straight from that, browsing through photos or starting and stopping videos.

But the Apple TV is so much more than just a wireless media player to stream you movies and music from your computer, it also give you access to YouTube content and you can even play your HD podcast videos on your TV. In addition to that you also get access to TV series and Movie rentals through the use of a US iTunes Account, where you can watch the latest TV series the day it gets released for a mere $0.99 or get access to the latest Movies the day they get released on DVD for only $3.99 per movie, all of this in glorious HD right here in South Africa.

Unfortunately, the Apple TV is not officially available in South Africa, but luckily my favourite iTunes Gift Card provider has just informed me that are now also selling the Apple TV with free courier shipping on their site.

The Apple TV is going for about $199 when you import it through them, much cheaper than Kalahari.net is asking for the device, and also offering better value when compared to other media devices such as the XTreamer which sells at the same price here in South Africa and has no WiFi.

You can get the Apple TV at the following South African outlets:
WildTwig (Recommended)
Kalahari.net
Have2Have

Alternatively if you know about someone that lives in the states and will be heading to South Africa soon, you can always ask them to pick you one up for $99 at an Apple Store and bring it back for you.

So everybody has been going on about this Google Chrome extension you can install that basically scrapes your Facebook friends data from Facebook and exports it to you in CSV format, however now Facebook has blocked the scraping techniques and the extension is useless, luckily there is a legal way of getting your Facebook friends contact information.

Yahoo may not be the search giant it used to be back in the day, but it has some awesome tools, and one such tool is its address book. See, Yahoo is a Facebook partner and because of that they get access to certain info users apps using the normal Facebook API can not get hold of, like the email address of your friend.

Exporting your Facebook friends to Google+ is a fairly easy operation, but it does involve a few sites.

Create a Yahoo! Address Book account.
Log into Yahoo! Address Book and click the Facebook Import Contacts button.
Authorise Yahoo! to access your Facebook data.
You should now have gotten a message saying x amount of contacts was imported.
Log into Google+ and head to the Circles section.
Click on the Find and Invite tab and then click on the Find Friends: Yahoo! link.
Authorise Google+ to access your Yahoo! contacts and they should now appear in the list.
Add them to a new circle called Facebook Friends and then post an update to that circle.

As easy as that and you will have all you Facebook friends in Google+, however they may not receive an invite as Google only opens invites every now and then, but atleast when they join Google+ one day you will be following them already.

Naspers owned pay TV operator MultiChoice has announced that effective 1 April 2011, many of its bouquets on DStv will see a price increase.

MultiChoice informed their customers that their monthly subscription fees will increase from 1 April 2011. “Wherever possible, the increases have been kept to a minimum,” said Fathima Ebrahim, MultiChoise spokesperson.

Three bouquets are effected by the price increase namely DStv Premium, DStv Compact and DStv Select. PVR acces, DStv Mobile, DStv North and South Indian, PVR add on, DStv Lite, DCC, ZEE TV and DStv Portuguesa rates all remains unchanged.

The question now remains is when is enough enough? MultiChoice are clearly making large margins of profits from its DStv offering with it having been the only Pay TV operator in South Africa for long and still having exclusive broadcast rights to certain sporting events leaving fans with no other choice then to cough up.

So this is my story, I go to MTN the other day to take out a Cellphone contract for my wife on what we believed was a prepaid number, seeing as we bought the simcard more than 5 years ago and has since been using it to make calls and top up just like you would do with a normal pre-paid sim, just to find out that we cant take out a contract as the number belongs to a company called CELL2CELL.

So I then I remembered that my mother in-law took out a recurring monthly airtime contract on that number a few years back that tops up the number with R50 airtime every month, now this was almost 4 years ago and nobody notified us that the number would become the property of CELL2CELL. Today I tried to port the number to MTN from CELL2CELL and was simply told the number does not belong to me and I can’t get it back.

After numerous phone calls I got hold of CELL2CELL and soon as I mentioned porting the lady quickly, without hesitating, referred me to a very arrogant manager called Mark, clearly sounding like they are used to dealing with extorting clients on a daily basis out of their cellphone numbers. It seems that CELL2CELL automatically took ownership of the number without my wife’s consent and then continued to automatically renew the 2 year subscription without even contacting her or my mother in-law.

Surely this must be unlawful in some way? I know the new consumer protection act would avoid this from happening, but there has to be a way to get back the number.

I have searched the web and have come across a number of similar complaints regarding CELL2CELL not wanting to release cellphone numbers of clients.

Now my question is how can CELL2CELL take ownership of my wife’s number without her consent? And how can they automatically renew a contract on her number when she has clearly not given them any permission to do so?

And its not just CELL2CELL I hold responsible here, its also MTN who provides services to crooks like CELL2CELL, and the stores that provide cellphone services through CELL2CELL.

Next time you see a great offer in a store stay as far away as possible, not even when someone calls you claiming to be MTN, Vodacom, or Cell C, rather go to their stores and deal directly with them.
