Security has tightened in the months after last episode, as Lyudmilla Raskova (Anna Maxwell Martin) promised, now that she’s on the scent of Americans trying to smuggle something into Star City. Toward the end of this episode, “Bad Dancer,” we learn what it is — a small radio transceiver — and who did it (I’ll tell ya at the end of this). But the hunt for that piece of equipment that still makes it onto a Soviet spacecraft headed to the moon anyway creates problems everywhere, from everyday inconveniences to the death of a cosmonaut as a result of rebooting the onboard systems to disable the foreign radio signal.

The lockdown looks different for all of our sprawling cast of characters. Tanya Mironova (Ruby Ashbourne Serkis) finds solace in musical contraband pressed onto X-rays, what her stressed-out husband Valya (Adam Nagaitis) calls “bone records.” (These were real, by the way!) There’s a tragedy in the way the records warp after so few plays; she can’t even get one clean listen in because each time she’s interrupted. Still, Tanya’s connection to music allows for some lovely color to her character and draws in young Irina (Agnes O’Casey), who’s still learning the rules of engagement when it comes to being a good intelligence officer at Star City.

As part of her regular surveillance assignment, Irina listens in on the Mironova apartment. Her connection may be via scratchy tapes, but she’s clearly become endeared to the couple, especially Tanya. But Star City is a small place. Out at the town square market, Irina learns that Tanya actually teaches piano to her daughter Zoya, and Tanya invites the two of them over. Wilder yet, Irina accepts. O’Casey is great in this scene, barely concealing her feelings of interloping. It leads to Irina being probably too vulnerable in sharing details about Zoya’s father. He’s a “bad man,” but in exactly what ways, we don’t know. In a clever continuation of Irina relating to places through the tapes, the audio cuts out as she speaks. Later, she magnetizes the part of the tape of her visit we don’t hear. I’m guessing it won’t be a secret for terribly long, though. Certainly overseer Lyudmilla will catch this act of self-censorship, inquire after it and give her a hard lesson about her job.

On the space side, the Sergeis Korolev (Rhys Ifans) and Nikulov (Josef Davies) are in the throes of their next rushed moon mission, while also trying to move quickly on their secret Venus project. The Chief Designer has to do his share of smuggling, too: a gigantic deep sea pod that can take extreme levels of pressure — the same needed to withstand Venus. But in splitting their time between – and managing the stress of – the projects, that American radio transceiver manages to make it onboard Luna 17.

And who is the rat? It’s Valya, who’s been training the Luna 17 crew (which includes Solly McLeod’s Sasha). During the launch, Valya takes a trip with Tanya to see a pianist perform in Moscow, where he’s approached by a mystery woman in a manner that makes it seem like an affair, but zoom in and we hear the reality. She’s pressuring him for another job since the transceiver was found out. We’ve only spent a short time with Valya, but now it all adds up why he’s been so stressed out and a distant husband, leaving room for Sasha to elbow his way in with Tanya. I’m very curious to know how he was recruited. Blackmail? Over what?? We’ll find out!

Star Wars: The Acolyte Creator Would 'Absolutely' Come Back for Season 2 if Disney Greenlights It

Star Wars: The Acolyte Season 2 seems unlikely for now, but creator Leslye Headland has confirmed she would "absolutely" show up for more episodes if Disney ever gave her the green light.

Star Wars: The Acolyte Season 2 seems unlikely, but creator Leslye Headland has confirmed she would "absolutely" show up for more episodes if Disney ever gave her the green light.

The mind behind the 2024 Sith-centric spin-off series talked about her interest in more episodes and what the story could look like if it returned during an interview with Empire. Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is fast approaching. This new chapter of the live-action series draws in many iconic characters and elements from the animated series, not least of which being the long-awaited debut of the gruff earthbender Toph Beifong (Miyako).

As a primer for this weekend’s IGN Live festivities, we spoke with Executive Producer and Writer Christine Boylan and Executive Producer and Director Jabbar Raisani, the two people responsible for guiding the series in its second and third seasons. Read on to learn more about the debut of Toph, how the series streamlines the plot of the cartoon, and what to expect from Zuko and Azula’s simmering family drama.

IGN: The two of you stepped into bigger roles for Season 2, and that was a big change behind the scenes. How different would you say your experience has been working on the show this time, and did you come into Season 2 with any major goals in mind?

Jabbar Raisani: With Season 1 postproduction, there was an opportunity there to really shape the show in a way that we really tried to deliver something that audiences found familiar but felt elevated, and I think going into Season 2 was like, how do we continue that feeling of elevating this show for live action and really bringing the audience something that felt grounded? And for us, I think the opportunity to go in from the very beginning with Seasons 2 and 3, a lot of the discussions that we had together were, we want to make a show that feels more like a historical drama look and feel.

So it was a lot of that, like how do we make this feel like a real living, breathing place and not like something that has been filmed with actors but created in a computer. We used the Volume in Season 1, which I think we had some great successes with, but for us it was like we really want to be in real places and real locations. As a director, I much prefer being in a real space where I can look around and see where the sun is and take out my little chart and figure out where the sun's going to be and say, "Okay, we're going to shoot like this," and it's just much more what I'm familiar with, and I find it easier on set to work in a space in those ways.

With the Volume, it's a whole other challenge that can yield some great results, but for me, the real world is the best results, and I think that applies for our visual effects as well. When you start with something that is real, whether it be location or a giant set build, there might be some blue screen or green screen there, but there's so much in camera that it allows them to say, "Okay, that's what the light was doing on that day, and this is all in camera, and we're just adding a giant sea serpent to it." So it just let us make a show that was, I think, from the writing point all the way through the final delivery of visual effects, something that felt grounded in reality that had elements of fantasy versus pure fantasy.

Christine Boylan: Yes, and we got super lucky because Jabbar and I worked together before we even met each other, which was amazing, because he directed the episode I wrote in season one, and because of COVID I was not on set during that time. In my many years of doing television, I'm almost always on set for my episode and other people's episodes, but I wasn't there during that time. I was just so pleased with how it came out, so I was like, "Oh, this guy's really good."

By the time we actually met in person, it was already like, “Okay, you are the directing EP, you are the writing EP, this is happening.” It was already, we had already signed on. So we met and we're like, "You kind of see the show this way, I kind of see the show this way." "Oh, it's the same thing, okay, great." Because we look at the animated series, it starts in a beautiful place, it matures and it matures, it just sort of opens like a flower. And this show is not a one-to-one. It's a completely different kind of retelling of the same legend, but we wanted to mirror that growth, and I think we got to do that visually and hopefully in the writing and in the VFX as well.

IGN: I imagine one of the challenges of making a live-action Avatar series specifically is the fact that you've got a story about younger heroes, but you have a cast that's constantly aging. So I'm curious how Season 2 deals with the real-world time gap between these two seasons.

Boylan: We very much, like the real locations and the real sets, we said we want to film in the weather, we want to- whatever gets thrown at us, we will accept because that is what making a real show with real human people is. And part of that is when you're working with teenagers, they're going to mature. And I wouldn't even say age. I think Gordon still has a baby face even at the end of Season 3, but there is definitely a time gap in between Season 1 and Season 2.

We loved that in the writers' room. We loved the idea of getting to tackle that. We tell a little bit of what went on in that time gap. Certainly, there was a big battle at the end of Season 1, and there's a lot of fallout after that battle emotionally and physically. There's a lot of healing that has to happen, and some of that happens off-screen and some of it happens on-screen. So we got to give a little break there. What I really want is for the audience to step up and meet us where we're at. I come from theater. I believe in the audience giving and taking.

I don't ever look at the audience as consumers or people who are just taking stuff in. I think they are playing with us as we are playing with them. So I'm hoping that they are looking at this time jump as a way to fill in some stories that they get to miss. We don't get to tell every single story from the animated series, which I sort of love. When I was starting out and writing fan fiction, I always wrote fan fiction about those moments in series that you didn't get to see. And later on, when I wrote comics, I wrote some Star Trek comics about those moments in Star Trek and in Next Gen that we didn't get to see in between episodes. So I want that fan fiction. I want all of that. I want that beautiful creative participation from the audience, and the time jump gives us one area to do that. In between episodes, there's lots of little spaces for fans to come in and be creative and fill in.

Raisani: I think we kept it really simple, too. It's in between seasons. Was it a year? Was it less? Was it a little more? We don't get specific. Things happen that we mention in dialogue a little bit, but it's really, he was older, he learned to waterbend, and then we kind of start the adventure. And it's really about the audience catching up and inventing what you would like that story to be. But we really get the season propelling towards what's happening in Season 2 and the adventure our gang's on. I think too, we got the benefit of they are older as actors, as performers. They had time to work on their craft. The performances we got in Season 2 and Season 3, I think, are amazing. And I think everybody really went to work between Season 1 and Season 2, and they all came back stronger. I think all of us really just tried to learn everything we could from Season 2, level up Season 2, and really bring our A-game.

Boylan: The cast worked very hard. They were doing a lot of reading, they were doing a lot of watching films and things that we had recommended. They were working physically, getting ready for this, and they were perfecting their acting craft. I'm just really grateful for them. Yeah.

IGN: Book Two of the animated series is a pretty dense story, and you've got these major elements like Ba Sing Se and the Dai Li coming into play. How did you go about trying to translate and streamline that story for this new version?

Boylan: I think we knew that we could not tell every single piece of every story. We started out being really specific about scenes. We started out with scenes you want to see, things we really wanted, things we really needed. We filled a board with all of those, and that included stuff that didn't get done in Season 1, stuff that we could do or pull from Season 3. We just made a big board, and then we went through character by character and looked at character growth because that is what drama is. It's character growth, and growth is not a straight line. You grow forward, you double back, you fall back, you move forward. It's a journey. So following each character, the choices they make, and looking at each character's story, what set pieces, what areas would best showcase that character growth, no matter what, character always led everything that we did in the writer's room. So things that were left out were just not going to service the growth of the character.

We didn't have time for them. There's plenty of stuff we'd love to do. I have an entire Season 4 in my back pocket I'd love to get into, but things are what they are. So I think always sticking to character and making it grounded and real. You are 15 years old, you are an airbender, your entire society has been lost. That's real. Okay, now what do you do? That's how we moved from moment to moment, and everything we could bring in that we love from the animated series, we brought in. But we always looked at this as live action can do so many things that animation can't do, and animation can do so many things that live action can't do. And we love the animated series so much. Everyone in the writer's room is a huge fan, everyone on the crew is a huge fan. We just wanted to do our telling of this legend that hopefully the audience will come with us and enjoy.

Raisani: Look, I think as huge fans of the animated series, it's always hard. We want everything in. But you can't have everything. So we would always try to find clever ways to put things in the world, even if we couldn't tell that whole story. Like in Season 1, where there's a Flopsy in Bumi's palace, like a statue. We couldn't tell that story. We wanted that there. We tried to find ways of incorporating things via dialogue or paintings. If you look around our sets, Michael Wiley designed all these amazing sets, and we would tell him, "Hey, we want to put this picture in this set so that way we can reference this thing from the animated series we can't have in the show." We were just trying to find all these ways to put Easter eggs throughout the show.

So I think if people watch closely, yes, they may not get every scene they wanted. We didn't get every scene we wanted from the animated series in, but we really tried to put little Easter eggs and put little things in that fans could understand, that we couldn't put it in, but we acknowledge we love that too, and distill the show down to the version of the show that we could make. This is a live-action series. Everything animation does well, live action doesn't necessarily do well. There are certain things that live action shouldn't attempt because it just won't work the way it was in the animated series. And that's why I love the animated series is also on Netflix, because I can go back and watch that. I love it. I still re-watch it.

Boylan: This show is made by fans for fans. That's the thing. And if you look on my Netflix right now, and also my other things, like 90% of what I'm watching right now is anime because we're in a peak anime moment. There's stuff I wouldn't attempt in live action even if I were offered the property because it's like, you can't really do that. This was a very special opportunity to tell what is an eternal legend, just with a very grounded human way in.

Raisani: Yeah, when I first found out Netflix was doing Season 1, I was like, I was already a fan of the animated series. Like, I don't know how they're going to make that show. But I want to be involved in it. If they're going to try it, I want to try it too, but that's crazy to attempt.

IGN: So Toph is probably the most significant new character that joins the cast this season, and I imagine that's a very difficult role to cast between her blindness, her physicality, and her personality. What were you looking for when it came to choosing an actress to fill that role?

Boylan: So we've both been in some big casting searches in our careers. I've never been in one this extensive. Jenny Ju, our casting director, unbelievable talent at finding talent. She's really terrific. We saw so many people. When Miyako walked in, she walked in like an earthbender, and my gut, I just got this feeling in my gut going, "That's Toph." So yeah, obviously we went through so many reads and so many chemistry reads, but your gut's your gut, right?

Raisani: It was an extensive search. I think Jenny looked at over 6,000 submissions. I think she whittled it down, and we probably saw 80 to 100. And then from there, we did callbacks to the producer number, and then, yeah, like you're saying. When we got the chemistry reading, it was like Miyako was just Toph. When they were done with that session, we're like, "Well, we know who's Toph." There was no question.

IGN: And how much does she sort of shake up the core group dynamic this season? Do you feel like she was sort of a missing piece of the puzzle on the show?

Boylan: I think she shakes up the core dynamic in exactly the right way. When we find this group, they've been through a lot. The gang is young, it's the three of them, but they have been through so much together. It's the three of them and Appa and Momo. I don't want to leave out Appa and Momo, but they've been through so much. And then they are looking for an earthbending teacher. They don't know what they're going to encounter. They don't think they're going to have another person their age join the group and be this blunt, shameless truth teller. She's just so funny. She's so wicked. She's brilliant. Writing for Toph was one of the funniest things. It was a pleasure in the writers' room. We had so much fun.

And when we brought Joe Strechay on, who was our blindness consultant, he worked with Miyako on movement and all kinds of things. He also worked with production, he worked with directors, he worked with the writers a lot because we wrote a lot of jokes. We were like, "This is too far," and Joe goes, "Oh no, you can go way farther than that." So it was pretty great. I love developing the relationship, that friendship between Toph and Sokka. That was really important to me, that that happened. The way she relates to each one of the members of the gang and how she doesn't trust easily, but when she does, she trusts fully. Those things are so beautiful to watch unfold.

Raisani: I think how she relates to each of the characters in the gang was something I found really interesting. For Aang, he's either had everyone showing him deference or people trying to kill him. And now he's got this new situation to deal with, which is someone that is supposed to be teaching him but doesn't show him deference and will have none of that. And so that's something that Aang hasn't had to deal with. And then watching Katara be defensive of Aang, and her and Toph initially really not seeing eye to eye on how to train Aang, and then watching Katara and Toph's relationship emerge and watching their friendship bloom like that, it's just, there's a lot of nice dynamics that inserting a new character really changes things up and I think gives us an entire two more seasons of really interesting dynamics that, if you don't introduce this additional character, not that it gets stale, but it just gives us other places to go and other dynamics to play with.

Boylan: And we meet Toph right at the exact moment where Toph needs to meet the gang. Toph needs to meet the gang as much as the gang needs to meet Toph in order for Toph to grow. And so, over two seasons, she gets to have a growth arc that I just think is lovely. It was such a pleasure to write.

Raisani: Yeah, and then when it comes to how do we actually do this on set, we brought Miyako in for, we do boot camp, and we did a refresher boot camp, but we wanted her to feel comfortable with our other cast, but not familiar, not overly familiar, because she is supposed to be meeting with them for the first time. So it really was an interesting dynamic of trying to get her enough time with them to be comfortable, but not so much time that it felt like they were old friends. So we really tried to be aware of how much they were scheduled together prior to us filming the scenes where she was meeting them for the first time. And her first day on set was the Earth Rumble, where she meets them. It was great.

"We meet Toph right at the exact moment where Toph needs to meet the gang."

IGN: This is the first season where we really get to see earthbending in action, so can you talk about the challenge of trying to visualize that power, and specifically Toph's sight?

Boylan: Joe Strechay, a legend in the business, blindness consultant, hilarious, one of the funniest people on set, and brilliant. Wherever Miyako was, Joe was. That's how you found him. In training, on set, and in his spare time, which he had very little of, he worked with the writers, he worked with the crew, he worked with stunts, and he worked with directors to help- and the other actors to help everybody represent blindness in a way that the community can feel acknowledged and known and seen, and also Toph's particular power, which is her Toph vision, her Toph senses, her sound, all that kind of stuff. That was really the way in, was with Joe.

Raisani: I think that was the beginning, certainly. Miyako trained with contacts that blocked her vision 100%, where she had zero vision, and she practiced navigating spaces that way. So she started in familiar spaces where she would be at home, and then she moved on to set. And one of the things we would do is she would walk through set without the contacts in, understand the space more, and then put the contacts in and really have to count steps, have to come up with all different ways of helping her to understand and navigate that space. So that was an important part of how she moved through space. Toph is unique, though. Toph has the ability to perceive the world through her bending, so that's something that none of us can truly relate to, and that's her own unique experience. And Miyako folded that into her performance and her movement. And then there's the stunts aspect of it. Dean Cho and Adam Tang really worked with Miyako on her movements of how to move like an earthbender.

And once she was moving like an earthbender, our visual effects and special effects teams really take the next step. So if we're going to do something practically on set, that's our special effects team moving earth with all kinds of air movers or hydraulics. We did as much as we can do in camera. If we do it in camera, obviously, we also do a lot of visual effects. When you're moving a rock that's the size of a wall, that's going to be visual effects. And using our visual effects team, we would really plan out through pre-visualization what exactly is going to happen when Toph does this move. And then we would show that to Miyako so Miyako would understand, "Okay, this is exactly how I'm going to be manipulating this world around me."

And with Toph Vision specifically, we looked at the animated series and really broke down, okay, what are the elements that go into Toph Vision? Are we going to do black and white? Are we going to do these cascading, almost sonar-like visualizations that go through the space or not? And we started with stills and did some simple stills.

I mean, sonar, whether it's lidar, just trying to look at things that exist in our world that might be able to inform it or might be able to merge with the visual language from the animated series. Once we did that series of studies with our visual effects team on some test shots, we moved into some actual live-action material from the show. But we really always based everything on photography. Anything that was going to be Toph Vision, we would film it first, and then our visual effects teams would layer in elements on top of those filmed elements because, for us, it's about grounding it in reality and really, as little as possible, inventing something fully in CG. We want to do as much as we can practically and then augment or enhance with visual effects.

Boylan: Yeah, because ultimately this show's about manipulating the elements. It's not about pulling magic down from space. It's the elements. So that's as earthy as you can get.

IGN: I want to shift over to Azula and Zuko for a minute. Obviously, we know from the animated series that Zuko is in the midst of a huge redemptive character arc, so can you talk about how both these siblings sort of factor into the conflict in Season 2 and how their relationship with their father has evolved?

Boylan: Absolutely. This is a great lesson in what happens when you get conditional love versus unconditional love, and I'll leave it at that for those two. You can decide who gets what and when. I love royal stories. I love succession stories. I love sibling rivalries. We always looked at Azula and Zuko as foils for Katara and Sokka because they're siblings. So how do these siblings relate to them? And both are missing moms. Dad is withholding for different reasons. So how do they grow up versus how do they grow up? We would always check in and be like, "Right, Katara and Sokka, are they a mirror to Azula and Zuko in this moment? How is that working?"

Which I think is an interesting way in for Azula because having a real person, especially somebody with Lizzy's talent, playing that character, we get to do so much more with her. And I think I took advantage of that every second I could. Every second I could, I gave her as much as I could. I think making them real people was the most important thing. Again, animation can do certain things that we can't do, and we can do certain things that animation doesn't have the time or the energy or the space to do.

And a lot of that is really grounding in the family dynamic. What is it like for these two? As someone who grew up with a sister, right, I looked at this as, okay, right, the older-younger dynamic. What happens when the younger one is more aggressive? Well, the same thing happened with Iroh and Ozai. Okay, that's interesting. Let's talk about that a little bit. We really looked at that sort of Fire Nation family tree all the way back to Sozin, and we're like, "How does this family balance itself out?" And then you put that family in the spotlight in terms of them being royalty, in terms of them being active royalty ruling over not just an island but a bunch of colonized land taken by force and constantly at war. What does that mean, growing up in that household? So we tried to look at it emotionally, internationally. A lot of stuff was based on history. We looked at a lot of figures in history as much as we looked at the animated series, yeah.

Raisani: I think what was really fun is the animated series has certain flashbacks that they do, and we have ones that we did that are not in the animated series but I think add to that lore, add to their journey, and how you go from being a kid to being an adult that has these really difficult choices to make. And I don't think either of them is making a bad choice, given the path they were on. They're all making the best choice they can with the experiences they've had, and we really tried to lean into that for Azula and flesh out her story in a way that helped me understand the choices that she was making. I think that was really important, to dimensionalize Azula in a way that she really felt like a live-action character that I felt for, and I understood her story in a way that made me feel for her. And I wanted her to make the right choices, and it's so hard to watch her make the wrong choices. And I really wanted to make sure we found that story for her and gave her the amount of screen time that let me feel emotionally for her.

They're all making the best choice they can with the experiences they've had, and we really tried to lean into that for Azula and flesh out her story in a way that helped me understand the choices that she was making.

Boylan: I would say same with Zuko. Coming back to growth is not a straight line up. Growth is doubling back. Growth is failure. Growth is, "I did something good and it put me in a coma." There's a lot of things that happen with Zuko's arc that we could explore more in live action, and I hope that we did.

Raisani: Yeah, and then working with Dallas and Lizzy, it was amazing.

Boylan: They worked so hard.

Raisani: They're really hard workers. And in Episode 2, they're on screen together for the first time, and we spent a ton of time rehearsing that scene. It was amazing to get to rehearse it as much as we did. And then the day when we actually filmed it, it was just such an organic process shooting it with them. And we really did different versions of what it means to be together for the first time after your banishment. You really have not seen each other since that banishment. What does this mean for each of your characters? Are you coming here, Azula, to trick him? Do you love him? It's all of these things. There is no, it's one thing. It's complicated.

Boylan: All of it. It's so complicated, and it's emblematic of that. That moment where Dallas hears Lizzy's voice, so Zuko hears Azula's voice behind him, and the look on his face. That can only happen when a member of your family has come up behind you and you hear their voice and you haven't heard it in so long. It was such a specific choice that he made.

Raisani: We tried to find a lot of little moments like that and really work together with Dallas and Lizzy to make their journey something that felt like it was going to be a really hard decision for Zuko when we get to Episode 7. Is he going to go with Azula or is he going to go with the gang? Which path is he going to choose? I think if it's too easy of a choice, if Azula is the obvious wrong choice, that doesn't feel as honest. But we wanted to make it feel like, "Oh yeah, I totally understand how he got lured back into that world." So it was a lot of time spent in conversations about what their relationship was like.

Boylan: I think if a dramatic argument works, each party has to be right and wrong, and we try to do that as much as possible here.

Raisani: Yeah. And then going into the Ursa and Ozai backstory, I mean, we really went into that in more detail because that is a lot of the common ground, like the good times they would have had. I think we're back with Ursa in that past, and we wanted to bring that story more to life because that's the thing that Azula can use to bring Zuko back in.

Boylan: And it's the thing that bonds him to Katara.

For more, check out IGN's review of Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1 and see everything coming to IGN Live this weekend.

Jesse is a mild-mannered staff writer for IGN. The polished, colorful reworking of Scorsese’s 1991 blockbuster (which itself was a remake of J. Lee Thompson’s 1962 film; all based on John D. McDonald’s novel The Executioners) literally starts with a bang and quickly drags you into a pervasive sense of dread as thick as the Savannah night air.

The first two episodes, out today on Apple TV, quickly put their own spin on a familiar premise: Convicted murderer Max Cady (this time portrayed in a scene-chewing turn by Javier Bardem) is released from prison, much to the surprise of his former lawyer (Amy Adams) and her family. In this version, Adams’s Anna Bowden is married to the former prosecutor of Cady’s case (Patrick Wilson), so the anxiety that comes with Cady’s release is a family affair.

Episode 1 opens with Cady’s mistress committing suicide at his direction, opening the door to her taking the fall for his 17-year-old crime (he was accused of murdering his wife and unborn son). What follows Cady’s release is a languid, tension-filled premiere brimming with paranoia and foreboding.

As soon as Cady re-enters society, the Bowdens’ seemingly idyllic life becomes flush with ominous incidents. Strange noises begin to fill their posh Southern home. Their security system begins to malfunction. Anna and Tom’s (Wilson) daughter Natalie (Lily Collias) is followed by a strange car. A family of dead skunks is found in their backyard pool. A panther, of all things, is seen on their suburban property. Some of these occurrences are quickly explained (turns out the guy following Natalie was a podcaster obsessed with Max Cady!) but many are left unresolved (for now) and feed into an unrelenting sense of tension.

Soon, Tom and Anna’s son Zack (Joe Anders) goes missing and the dread ratchets up to 11. Cady and Anna come face-to-face at a glitzy fundraiser for the latter’s Innocence Project-like foundation. She’s not telling us about her prior relationship with Max, and all signs point to it being a while until we find out why.

Bardem is brilliantly cast here, floating through scene after scene in a turn so menacing that he might as well be twirling his mustache. As Max, Bardem exudes an unhurried charisma that makes it easy to see why so many are smitten with him (including Anna’s boss Noa, played by CCH Pounder). In perhaps his best villainous performance since No Country for Old Men (or at least Skyfall), Bardem is having the time of his life. He and Adams go toe-to-toe early and often, saying more with glances and smirks than most actors do with pages of dialogue.

For her part, Adams’s Anna is steely but vulnerable. It’s a performance that complements Bardem’s brilliantly and leaves you constantly guessing what exactly happened between these characters nearly two decades ago.

Wilson’s Tom is stoic and grounded, providing a welcome counterpoint to the high drama between Max and Anna. Anders and Collias round out a solid cast that elevates what can otherwise be overly-pulpy material. Anders, in particular, gives a performance that masks a metric ton of secrets, adding another dose of suspense to a show that’s already filled with plenty.

Anders’s Zack serves as the focal point of Episode 2 where, after disappearing before the fundraiser, he reappears at his family’s home with a bloody foot and missing toe. Max is there too, pointing to more terror that he may or may not be inflicting on the Bowden family.

And therein lies the central premise and overarching appeal of Cape Fear: At every turn, you’re pretty sure that Max Cady is responsible for the strange things happening to the Bowdens, but you can’t be 100% certain. Nor can you be absolutely positive that there’s not something in the family’s past that they did to deserve it.

Episode 2 begins with a gruesome flashback (beautifully shot in black and white) showing us some of Max’s time in prison, in which he brutally murders a pair of fellow inmates. Back in the present day, Zack reappears, Max is arrested, and they all end up in the hospital where Zack’s missing toe reappears. Turns out, after being drugged – by whom, we don’t know (we do) – whomever was responsible stuffed the toe into Zack’s throat, which he vomits up in the emergency room.

Unlike the premiere, the second episode drags in places, seemingly more concerned with mood than advancing the plot. Despite this, we do get some interesting character revelations. After his mother took her own life, Max was sent to live with his father in the States, leading to an abusive childhood and potential rationale for Max’s (alleged) future actions. We meet Anna’s father Ben, whom she has cut out of her life. Anna discovers Zack has a mysterious online girlfriend, which may or may not be the alias Max is using to further terrorize the family.

Cape Fear has a lot going for it. The cinematography is lush and sultry. The acting, despite some ill-fated attempts at South Georgia accents, is laudable. The tone of suspense and dread that infects every scene of the show is borderline addictive.

The allusions here to Scorsese’s 1991 film (starring Robert DeNiro as Max Cady) are plenty. Episode 1 features vibrant, disconcerting interstitial negative images of the lead characters, which directly tie into the ending of that movie. The film’s bombastic score returns here as well, providing a jolting sense of familiarity.

This is a show that knows what it wants to be yet is not attempting to reinvent the thriller genre or be better than the versions of the story that came before. The dialogue can be overly expository at times and the thrills can border on ham-handed. But if you’re a fan of jump scares, shadows slipping through doorways, and things that go bump in the night, the first two episodes of Cape Fear likely point to a season of delightful thrills.

Cape Fear Body Count!

I’ll be back to review Cape Fear each week and will be keeping tabs on the show’s escalating body count. From now until July 15, you can get the first three months of an Audible Standard plan for only $0.99. You'll get your first credit immediately and two additional credits as the months go on. That essentially lets you listen to the first three Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks for only $1, no Amazon Prime membership necessary.

And if you've never listened to an audiobook before, I highly recommend starting with that particular series. Dungeon Crawler Carl is one of the best audiobooks right now thanks to a pretty wild story and some incredible narration from Jeff Hays. Once you start listening, you'll see why the series continues to dominate the Audible bestsellers list week after week.

Why Is Dungeon Crawler Carl Worth Your Audible Credits?

Audible has the largest audiobook in the world and you can use your credits on any book within it, so what makes Dungeon Crawler Carl so special? While it's true that the Dungeon Crawler Carl books themselves are quite good (It's a story about a man and talking cat on an intergalactic gameshow), the Author himself has praised narrator Jeff Hays for all of the details he brings to the audio.

"Jeff Hays here is one of the few people that's really started leaning into the voices and a little bit of sound effects, and I really like that," Dinniman said in a 2025 interview at SDCC, "I'm very happy that more and more narrators are embracing that."

Matt Dinniman's crazy characters lend themselves beautifully to audio and Jeff Hays does an incredible job making each voice and accent unique. This is something that Matt Dinniman has seemingly started working into his writing by going into more depth about accents as he describes new NPCs and crawlers through book eight.

Try the Wandering Inn for a Longer LitRPG Listen

Although I'd personally recommend the Dungeon Crawler Carl books first, the other LitRPG series absolutely worth your Audible credits is The Wandering Inn. At its heart, it is a story about a girl named Erin Solstice who finds herself magically pulled into a world with a video game-like leveling system. After surviving some terrifying encounters, she stumbles upon an old abandoned Inn and finds herself suddenly leveling up as an Innkeeper. It's one of the best fantasy audiobooks available and the first book is absolutely massive. You'll get over 48 hours of story for a single credit. That's roughly four times as long as most books.

To learn more about The Wandering Inn, check out IGN's interview with the author.

Jacob Kienlen is a Senior Audience Development Strategist and Writer for IGN. Series showrunnder Adi Shankar confirmed in a new statement that this was always the plan and, in fact, he envisioned it as a movie trilogy "disguised as a television series."

"For those of you who have been paying attention to the episode names, I have been showing you the structure the entire time. This was always Dante’s Divine Comedy with guns and a red coat. Season 1 was Inferno. Season 2 was Purgatorio. Season 3 will be Paradiso. These three seasons make up 'The Force Edge Saga.' Since inception, 'The Force Edge Saga' was designed as a movie trilogy disguised as a television series.”

Devil May Cry Season 2 was released last month and has been incredibly well-received. We gave the new season an 8/10, noting that it "goes bigger than its predecessor in every way." Shankar had previously told IGN that he viewed the leap between seasons similar to the jump between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

“Season 2 is just way, way, way bigger in terms of scope and scale,” Shankar told IGN. “So it's the difference between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. That's the comp. Or Halo 1 and Halo 2, where in terms of just scale and scope – orders of magnitude bigger and larger. And the tone is just completely different on top of that. The tone is very, very different, so it cuts deeper.”

It remains to be seen if Season 3 will be the show's Dark Knight Rises, a movie that upped the stakes on a cataclysmic scale after Bane conquered Gotham City and threatened to destroy it with a nuclear bomb. While I can't imagine there being a nuke in Devil May Cry Season 3, perhaps there will be some kind of apocalyptic threat that pushes our beloved heroes to the brink.

There are currently no details about Devil May Cry Season 3's plot or release date. However, Season 1 was released in April 2025, so there may be a chance Season 3 debuts next spring as well. Either way, it's interesting to see that the show won't be overstaying its welcome and may, in fact, leave us wanting more.

Cade Onder is a freelancer for IGN's news team. The elements involved here – equal parts wrenching and compelling in terms of the aftermath of what occurred – certainly make for an involving series, even if it doesn’t quite tie together everything it feels like it’s trying for.

A veteran of British crime dramas like The Victim and Chasing Shadows, Rob Williams wrote The Witness (with Alex Winckler directing the three episodes) using Alex Hanscombe’s memoir, Letting Go, as the main source material. Alex is The Witness’s title character, a boy who is just three years old when his mother Rachel (Eleanor Williams) is horrifically raped and murdered in front of him during a walk through a park. With no DNA or fingerprints found at the scene of the crime, Alex (played as a 3-year-old by Jahsaiah Williams) is the only one who can give investigators any information to go on, but his incredibly young age makes this a daunting and emotionally precarious process.

Trying to deal with all of this is Alex’s father, André (Jordan Bolger), who’s left juggling his own immense grief and wish to protect his son from more trauma with the push to get Alex to talk about what happened. It’s an impossible situation, and there are strong and effective scenes early on as André must navigate whether having Alex talk about these things can actually help him process what he went through versus simply giving the police what they want, regardless of what it does to the boy.

Best known for playing youthful roles in series like Peaky Blinders and The Book of Boba Fett, Bolger is excellent in The Witness as André. He wears his character's mixture of sadness and frustration on his face, even as we see him do his best to push through and give Alex some sort of normal life, which becomes increasingly difficult thanks to the massive media attention they attract wherever they go.

Jordan Bolger wears his character's mixture of sadness and frustration on his face, even as we see him do his best to push through and give Alex some sort of normal life.

The Witness takes place in two time periods, including the murder and initial investigation in 1992-1994, and then a decade later when André and Alex, now living in Spain, are informed the case is being reopened thanks to an advancement in DNA matching techniques. Kudos to both Bolger’s performance and to the hair and makeup teams for selling him at different points of André’s life, in a story that ultimately spans 14 years. Much of the story jumps back and forth between the two time periods and Winckler does a very good job of visually differentiating the eras so it’s almost always immediately clear which portion we’re now back in.

That being said, it’s hard not to wonder if telling this story in a more linear fashion might not have been just as effective, as it feels like the cross-cutting is sometimes a bit of a distracting, unnecessary technique. But at least it does allow us to meet the teenage version of Alex earlier, with Max Finchman also very good as a kid who has, not shockingly given all he’s gone through, grown up with some self-destructive tendencies. A complex aspect of all of this is that Alex’s lashing out has been perhaps given an extra boost unwittingly by André, whose desperation to keep their identity a secret in other countries, lest the media learn where they are, has them living with a go bag packed with money and passports by the door, as though they’re criminals on the run.

A talented cast of British character actors like Neil Maskell, Kevin Eldon, Sean Gilder, James Bradshaw and James Dryden offer solid, engaging performances as the men leading the investigation into Rachel’s death in the ’90s, with Mark Stanley then grabbing the baton for the portion set in the 2000s. There are some moments in the series that are certainly heavy-handed, such as André watching a psychologist on TV talk about the lifelong trauma Alex will likely feel, but the cast do a lot to keep the story grounded, even when it briefly threatens to feel a bit more sensationalized.

The third and final episode of The Witness jams in a lot, including the reopening of the case, the possibility of seeing the killer (Steve Stamp) in a more sympathetic light based on his own disturbing history, and discussion of huge errors on the part of the police going back to before Rachel’s murder even occurred. All of these aspects are compelling, particularly the unexpected empathy towards the killer in a story of this sort (and who it is who’s seeing them in this different manner). Yet it also feels somewhat rushed through and ultimately as though The Witness could actually have used one more episode to help flesh out some of what is being conveyed here.

Upcoming New Video Game Movies and TV Shows: 2026 Release Dates and Beyond

From The Legend of Zelda movie to The Last of Us, Fallout and Mass Effect TV shows -- and beyond -- here's every video game adaptation that's coming to the big and small screen!

Some may say we are in a renaissance of video game adaptations as we've been treated to The Super Mario Bros. Movie (and its sequel!), a third Sonic the Hedgehog film, and TV series based on The Last of Us and Fallout, and will soon be getting adaptations of God of War, Mass Effect, and so many more. The best part? A lot of these look so much better than video game adaptations we’ve gotten in the past.

How many will actually make it through development and see the light of day remains to be seen, and only a fraction of these have actual release dates. But we're watching these projects, and we're tracking them!

For the purposes of this list, we classify a “video game movie” or "video game TV show" as an actual adaptation of an existing video game, so something like Wreck-It Ralph (which is just a movie about video games) wouldn’t qualify. They don’t have to be faithful adaptations – they just have to be based on a real game.

Click on through the slideshow below for a glimpse, or read on to find out about the biggest projects with definite details. In short, it's an ongoing story about a man and his sassy cat's descent into the madness of an apocalyptic space game show. The author, Matt Dinniman, has a writing style that perfectly blends outrageousness with intrigue, making it hard to put down once you start reading.

There are a total of eight Dungeon Crawler Carl books that have been published so far, with the latest novel releasing on May 12. All of the books are available to read with a Kindle Unlimited subscription, and all eight of the books are available for purchase as hardcover editions.

Dungeon Crawler Carl reading order at a glance

The Dungeon Crawler Carl books are meant to be read in the order in which they were released. All of the books are included with a subscription, so you can burn through the full series fairly quickly without having to buy each individual title. If you prefer reading actual physical books, however, you can also buy hardcover copies of all seven books. A Parade of Horribles, the upcoming eighth book in the series, will be getting a physical release at the same time it comes out on Kindle, so you won't have to wait to pick up a copy like you did with the previous entries.

Alternatively, if you're a fan of audiobooks, the Dungeon Crawler Carl Audible editions come highly recommended. Voice actor Jeff Hays does an incredible job portraying all of the different characters Matt Dinniman features in his books. You can listen to the first book for free by signing up for an Audible subscription. There's currently an Audible promotion going on that can get you the first three DCC audiobooks for $0.99, which makes this path a lot more tempting right now.

A Parade of Horribles Synopsis

A Parade of Horribles out now. Here's the official synopsis from the Penguin Random House website:

"As chaos and mass panic spread outside the dungeon in the wake of Faction Wars, Carl and Donut find themselves on the tenth floor, where they’re forced to compete in a surprisingly normal set of tasks. Well, normal for the dungeon.

Races. Get from point A to point B, and don’t come in last. After each race, they pick an upgrade for their vehicle and the track gets more challenging. It all seems a little too normal, a little too simple.

Ignore those strange glitches that are occurring with increasing frequency. Don’t listen to those whispers about what’s happening on the mysterious eleventh floor, something the system AI calls A Parade of Horribles. Nobody, not even the showrunners, knows what that means. Just that the AI has ominously dubbed it 'a coming-out party for the ages.'

Everything is fine, Crawler. I repeat, everything is fine.

Carl hates that it’s business as usual. The rules of this floor have taken away his agency. That just will not do.

So Carl is planning a party of his own. It’s a plan so dangerous, so insane, he can’t even consult his friends lest the AI put a stop to it. Because if it goes wrong, it’s not just the end of Carl and Donut. No. The stakes are higher than they’ve ever been."

For more information, check out this exclusive exerpt from IGN's Matt Dinniman interview.

The Future of Dungeon Crawler Carl

Matt Dinniman has stated that he expects to write 10 total entries in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. It’s no surprise HBO has announced their once hit drama will end with Season 3, because there’s little left of the original spirit of the show. Even major character deaths can’t shock the series back to life. What creator Sam Levinson has given us with Season 3 is a fun enough Western but a paltry conclusion to Euphoria itself.

It’s not all terrible, despite a lackluster first three episodes. So what exactly is good, bad, and ugly? Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and his crew, Bishop (Darrell Britt-Gibson), G (Marshawn Lynch), and Kidd (Asante Blackk), are compelling to watch as they go toe-to-toe with Laurie (Martha Kelly) and her gang of drug-dealing white supremacists. After Alamo, Bishop makes for one of the best new additions to the series as he delivers violence and philosophy via hypnotic, stone-faced monotone.

Really, valiant efforts by the cast are what keep the show worth watching. Alexa Demie reminds us just why Maddy remains such a fan favorite. Her calculating business acumen and stone-cold exterior crumble at times into stark vulnerability. Zendaya’s Rue and Colman Domingo’s Ali share several quietly contemplative scenes that echo something of the gravity of Season 1. Hunter Schafer, for all she’s barely in Season 3, plays Jules with the soft wistfulness of a bird in a gilded cage. I’ll miss these characters, even if I didn’t always recognize them this season.

The world of Euphoria is alight in Western technicolor this season, everything intense and sun-drenched. It’s easy to see where Levinson tried to sketch his Old Hollywood inspirations. In one particular scene, Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) stratospheric growth on OnlyFans is represented by her growth into a giant woman terrorizing the streets of Los Angeles. It’s giving Attack of the 50 Foot Woman or, like, sexy King Kong vibes. We even got a saloon stand-off in the finale, set to something that sounds suspiciously like Amazing Grace.

Season 3 is more a vanity project than it is a tragic or even heartfelt conclusion to the lives of characters audiences grew to love.

The fun doesn’t last, though. Levinson stuffs this final season with heavy-handed religious themes and metaphors, half-baked ideas about women’s sexuality and power, and a confusing conclusion about good and evil. Where the first three episodes seemed meant to titillate in their debauchery, the rest try futilely to make a statement on the “traditional” hawking of women’s bodies via men (i.e. enterprises like Alamo’s Silver Slipper strip club) versus new age, digital means like OnlyFans in which sex workers have more power. It’s an interesting dichotomy to explore but done so poorly here that it feels more like an excuse for Levinson to throw almost all of Euphoria’s women into some form of sex work for shock value.

There’s a contradictory conception of women as both conniving and helpless. It’s a madonna-whore complex wherein every woman is capable of great evil yet easily bested by the will of men. Levinson seems to think he’s drawing some revelatory conclusion, but the fact that the major players in the climax of our finale are three men, none of which are any of the women who have long been the core of Euphoria, renders it all moot. Zendaya’s Rue herself – who dies in the finale from a fentanyl overdose – is entirely absent from the last 50 minutes of the finale.

Euphoria becomes a quasi-parable with surface-level observations about “salvation” made through Rue’s newfound preoccupation with (and, later, Ali’s conversion to) Christianity. The promised land, according to Rue, is a Texas homestead of white, conservative Christians she visits briefly in the first episode.

Euphoria is over, and has little to show for it. Perhaps what we can take from these tumultuous three seasons are the careers it’s launched. Beyond that, Season 3 is more a vanity project than it is a tragic or even heartfelt conclusion to the lives of characters audiences grew to love. We end the series on a prayer, with Ali (now going by Martin) at the head of the table, Rue as a visiting apparition, and a family of characters we barely know. Fitting for a series that’s become an unrecognizable whisper of itself.

Stargate Veteran Disputes Reason for Amazon's Shock Cancellation of Series Revival

As the dust settles on Amazon's shock decision to scrap its in-development Stargate revival series, its consulting producer has disputed a claim that the show would not have appealed to a broad enough audience.

As the dust settles on Amazon's shock decision to scrap its in-development Stargate revival series, its consulting producer has disputed a claim that the show would not have appealed to a broad enough audience.

Yesterday, Variety broke the news that Amazon had walked away from its greenlit Stargate series, announced for Prime Video just six months ago. It was claimed that Amazon were reportedly unhappy with the direction of the project, and uncertain it would appeal to a wider viewership beyond existing Stargate fans.

Now, veteran Stargate writer Joseph Mallozzi has hit back at that claim, and shared inside knowledge on what the series would have looked like, gleaned from having served as one of its consulting producers.

"Nope. No. Sorry. Gonna have to push back on this," Mallozzi wrote in a post on X/Twitter. "We were ever mindful of creating a show that would have broad appeal."

Mallozzi previously penned more than 70 episodes of Stargate SG-1 and its spinoffs Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate: Universe. He had been working on Amazon's unnamed Stargate revival with another franchise veteran: writer, executive producer and showrunner Martin Gero, who had also written numerous episodes of the above shows.

"Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon," Mallozzi revealed. "It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025.

"As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We'll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters - or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past."

Word that fans will have caught up with existing characters will likely only make the disappointment of the series' cancellation harder to hear. While no actors had officially confirmed their involvement in the revival, Stargate SG-1's beloved Daniel Jackson actor Michael Shanks had frequently expressed his enthusiasm for the project, and shared Mallozzi's post on his own social media. "As always, I can’t find the words," Shanks wrote. "So I'll share Joe's. He's the writer for a reason 🥹"

"My heart breaks," Mallozzi concluded. "For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved."

Amazon is yet to officially comment on the series' cancellation. Yesterday's report suggested the company was still interested in a way forward for the franchise overall, though this iteration of it is no more.

Tom Phillips is IGN's News Editor. Spoilers follow.

It’s been a year since the defeat of the terrifying Chroma Conclave, and much has changed for Vox Machina, but if you need a reminder of the story so far, we do get a fantastic and visually inventive musical recap by Grog himself. After our party of heroes each went their separate ways, Season 4 catches up with them as they contemplate whether a life without adventure is truly what they wanted. The three-episode premiere is all about whether these characters can truly live without each other and without accepting the call to adventure, and it does a great job of setting up the team’s inevitable return to action while teasing the biggest threat they’ve faced yet.

But before we meet the main villain, these first three episodes do a lot to establish the state of Exandria after the defeat of the dragons. As it turns out, just because Vox Machina saved the day doesn’t mean things are fine. The premiere shows us the aftermath of the great devastation caused by the Chroma Conclave, including how many towns have been ruined and how many people have suffered or died because Vox Machina couldn’t save them fast enough. In that time, a cult has been growing for the past year promising immortality and a stop of the old order — a cult seeking to defy the gods themselves and worshipping an ominous figure known as the Whispered One. Fans of Critical Role and D&D may immediately clock the identity of our mysterious new big bad for the season, one that’s been teased since all the way back in Season 1, but his identity is kept vague for now.

Within the first three episodes, the cult is already a fascinating antagonist for Vox Machina, unlike anything they’ve faced before, and replacing big monsters with ardent believers who are also quite hard to kill. One unfortunate CGI creature in the premiere aside, the visuals continue to stand out in this show, with dynamic action bursting with vibrant colors while still being easy to follow.

Wayne Brady’s performance gives Taryon an improvised feel, like the character is refusing to go along with the script and just doing his own thing.

The lack of Scanlan Shorthalt is very much felt in these first episodes, but luckily we have a brand new character that steps into that chaotic comic relief gap with ease. Meet Taryon Darrington, a rich fanboy who simply loves everything Vox Machina, fancies himself an adventurer, and is accompanied by his own robot biographer. Wayne Brady’s performance gives Taryon an improvised feel, like the character is refusing to go along with the script and just doing his own thing. You can see bits of Scanlan in the character while recognizing that he serves a brand new purpose in the story, teasing big connections to later developments.

Season 3 took some big swings in rearranging or outright changing events, and now Season 4 is paying that off by building up some compelling stories for our heroes. In particular, Pike benefits from these changes, with the gnome cleric still reeling from her crisis of faith last season as well as Scanlan abandoning the team. Her journey in these three episodes sees her at her lowest, struggling with the team’s place in the world and whether they’ve truly done any good. It’s clear the season is building up to some big departures for her character, a defiance of the idea of fate being written — not only in-universe as characters like Vex ponder their fate, but even whether the show itself is tied to what happened in the web series… or if there’s a better way.

Arnold T. Now, seven months later, the supply has finally caught up with the demand. After building and photographing the set in full, it's clear what the fuss was about. This is the quintessential 'adult' build – highly specific and highly technical. It is also, without hyperbole, an exquisite end result.

In addition to the Enterprise itself, you also get nine minifigures of the Next Generation crew: Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William T. Riker, Lieutenant Commander Data, Lieutenant Commander Geordi LaForge, Lieutenant Worf, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Counselor Deanna Troi, Guinan, and Wesley Crusher.

The minifigures are well-designed and detailed; Data has his signature yellow eyes, and Worf has a unique head accessory depicting his ridges. Troi is wearing her purple civilian jumpsuit from earlier seasons, before Captain Jellico ordered her to wear a standard uniform in "Chain of Command." The only missing crew member you could make a good case for would be Tasha Yar, although no doubt, someone has already figured out a minifigure equivalent.

Each LEGO minifigure comes with a unique accessory that dedicated Trek fans will appreciate. For Riker, it's his trombone ("Nightbird" sheet music not included). For Data, it's his cat Spot. Dr. Crusher has a tricorder. Worf, the security guard, has a phaser (no Bat'leth?). I especially loved Guinan's hat, which has its distinctive, vaselike appearance. The minifigures are displayable on a small, long platform bearing the TNG logo on its front.

The LEGO Star Trek Enterprise NCC-1701-D is divided into 30 separate bags and two instruction booklets. In the first half, you build the ship's base, which consists of its Engineering Hull and warp nacelles. In the second half, you build the ship's saucer and slide it into place.

The build is methodical and slow. You're creating futuristic curves with plastic rectangular prisms, which means you're gradually layering bricks, each slightly staggered from the preceding one. This process can often feel disjointed; you labor over a single section of the ship for a length of time, not quite understanding how it fits in with the rest of it. But it definitely will. An incongruent section could be one half of a larger symmetry, or it could be a tiny part of a greater, more cumulative effect.

Take, for example, the LEGO Enterprise's saucer, which contains lots of sharp, straight edges when you're halfway through building it. It looks nothing like itself, and you wonder how the designers will get the curve right.

But they manage it with a couple of creative tricks. You finish the saucer by building under it rather than over it, which hides the seams and the initial angularity. And each 'slice' of the underbelly has a single, curved portion facing outwards to create a single, continuous arc.

You mount the final model on a LEGO Technic black stand. The Enterprise's design is disproportionately top heavy, which wouldn't matter in the vacuum of space but does matter in a practical LEGO model. The designers offset the uneven weight distribution by tilting the stand back, so that the model tilts upwards and falls slightly back on itself. Gravity does some of the work, taking pressure off the bricks to support all the weight. You anchor the saucer to the hull with a pin that's disguised as a docking runabout. Because the saucer canonically detaches from the rest of the ship in emergencies, this feels like a narratively appropriate design.

In the same area of the ship, you can remove a panel to reveal the shuttle bay. Unfortunately, this is the only part of the ship that hints at the ship's interior. There's no blue, pulsing Warp Core or Transporter Room. There's no minimalistic, micro-depiction of the Bridge, which feels like a particularly significant oversight for a set of this size and price.

Having little to no play elements places a heavy burden on the model's display potential. And there's one thing the LEGO designers had to get right; the Enterprise-D's distinctive silhouette, as seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation's opening sequence. Ask anyone to picture the Enterprise-D in their mind's eye, and they'll picture one of two iconic shots, burned into our collective retinas by episode syndication. The first is this low angle shot on the Enterprise's starboard side, right when Captain Jean-Luc Picard gets to the "continuing mission" part of his monologue.

The second shot is right before the Enterprise engages warp speed for the second time: an eye-level view from the ship's aft:

Setting aside everything else it does well, the LEGO Enterprise absolutely nails both of these shots. Look at the ship model from either angle, and you'll get a chill. I involuntarily started humming the theme music and shaking my head the first time I saw it. It was uncannily perfect.

I'm already brainstorming how and where I'm going to display this model. I may even get a third-party light set to enhance it further, so that any visitor to our house gets the full-on, glowing experience.

LEGO U.S.S. Stargate veterans Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi were meanwhile onboard as consulting producers.

In a press release issued last November, Amazon described the now-canned show as a "new original series" rather than a direct continuation of anything that has come before, in order to tell "a bold new chapter" of the dormant sci-fi franchise. However, it would "not be a reboot", Gero said.

"I'm beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase," Gero continued. "For those who've kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one's for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you're in for something extraordinary."

Stargate originally kicked off with Roland Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi film of the same name, which established a core group of characters expanded upon by hit television spin-off SG-1. Across 10 seasons and several TV movies, SG-1 then spawned its own sister show, Atlantis, and latterly a more separate, darker take on the franchise, Stargate Universe

While Amazon has walked away from this project, the company is reportedly still open to exploring other Stargate ventures in future — though none are currently in production.

Tom Phillips is IGN's News Editor.
