Staying put won't sigificantly affect their chances next year. More importantly it will bore me. Saying that, here's my wish list:

1. Trade picks +players for Brandan Wright. The Warriors have a history of drafting really good players and trading them so they can excel for other teams. Wright on a per minute basis is really really good. He plays a position of need, and for whatever reason, can't get minutes for the Warriors. I would offer both picks and Kirk for Wright and cap filler. The Bulls would likely have to take back at least Turiaf and/or Maggette.

2. Pull a miracle trade for Bosh. You know, I know, they know Bosh is leaving Toronto. I'm not saying the Bulls have the talent to equal what they'd get back from Toronto in a Bosh trade. But they could offer Tyrus, two picks and a bunch of cap space next year.

3. Trade the picks for a useful rotation player. I'm tired of rookies. Gimme someone who can shoot 3s and play D, or get a board or two.

4. Barring the above, and we have to take a player at 16, here is my philosophy. If there's a player who has a legit shot at being more than a role player - TAKE HIM. Ignore position, ignore everything. Take him. In my mind the players who have some reasonable chance of being there at 16 who fit this bill are Ty Lawson and Brandon Jennings. Neither really fits a dire need, but both at least have a chance at being very productive.

Outside of those two players, I want someone who can at least do one or two things at an NBA level. I'm not big into projects. So by all means stay away from Mullens. I'd be fine with Gerald Henderson who can play D. I'd be ok with Budinger (even though it'd be a little high) because he can at least shoot. I'm ok with Blair because if you rebound in college you probably can rebound in the NBA. None of these guys is going to be a difference maker.

Wake me when it's over.

The Stoudamire Trade - Certainly not about Basketball

Image via Wikipedia
The Suns are struggling for playoff position and their payroll is above the luxury tax threshold. So for every dollar they are above that threshold, it costs them an extra dollar that goes straight to the NBA. According to ESPN, their payroll is at $75,762,000 (about $4 mill over the threshold).

Using what the Bulls can offer as an example, Sarver can save at least $2.5 in payroll this year. So that saves him $5mill in money that goes right to his bottom line. That's nothing to sneeze at. For next year, the expiring contract will save him even more. If it's Drew Gooden's $7mill that comes off, it should put them below the threshold (I don't know what salary increases the Suns players will get for next year). So it could save them $10 million next year.

Trade:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=bnoo3n

Keep in mind I'm not saying this trade would make basketball sense (and I'm not saying the Bulls have the best offer). But did the Pau Gasol trade make basketball sense? Everything in the NBA right now is about money.

Now the Suns did just fire Terry Porter, and presumably that was not motivated by money, because it means Sarver has to pay for an extra coach for a couple years. I don't know if that puts more pressure on him to save money, or if it means he's digging in for the long haul.

From a Bulls' fan's perspective, I certainly hope he is going to save money.

<fieldset class="zemanta-related"><legend class="zemanta-related-title">Related articles by Zemanta</legend>

That's Amare (chicagoist.com)

Suns Likely to Move Amar'e- But Where to? (armchairgm.wikia.com)

Underachieving and in Flux, Suns Appear Ready to Fire Porter (nytimes.com)

The Shootaround (myespn.go.com)

</fieldset>

It's Oh So Quiet

Before the start of last night's game, both the TBS and ESPN radio announcers
were saying how quiet the Wrigley fans were (this was even when
they were leading2-0.) I tend to look at things from the perspective of "what role is this player going to play on a championship caliber team. Let's look at the Bulls roster shall we?

Gordon: Small SG, can't play D. His PER last season was 16.52 (average being 15).

Hinrich: PG who simply cannot shoot. His PER was 13.13 - representing a monumental 4 point drop from the previous year.

Sefalosha: good defensively, can't shoot

Hughes: hasn't been average since his contract year. Can't shoot. Must get to line (and handle the ball) to be effective

None of those guys is particularly good at creating their own shot. Captain Kirk got maligned last year, but he's not a horrible player. If everything is going well around him, I think he can be a starting PG on a really good team as long as there are 4 players better than him on the floor. Gordon, from my observations, thinks his talent and production warrant a contract completely out of range with his skills, which are suited to being a Vinny Johnson type of a role. He can't run a team or play D. I just don't see how he's a starter on a good team.

Let's look at the forwards:

Drew Gooden: Not particularly good. Perhaps a very good bench player, but marginal as starter.

Tyrus Thomas: no post up game to speak of. Has an attitude issue. Incredibly athletic. Still has upside (at least for one more year). Fast.

Noah: good rookie year. Good defensively, good passer. Better, cheaper, younger Ben Wallace-lite. Speedy for big man.

Deng: In an off year, the best Bull.

Nocioni: bad contract, over-rated player. Maybe a decent bench player, but likely his greatest value will be when he's in his walk year.

The only player there you really really want to keep is Deng. He's possibly a top 3 player on a championship team. Thomas has the potential to develop into a nice player, but he's really going to need to play at a faster pace to be fully effective. But keep this in mind, statistically speaking - Tyrus was a better player than Hinrich last year (based on PER).

Either way, I think Gordon has to go. His contract will not be in proportion to his game. Sooner or later his ego will come down to his production, but it won't be in this contract.

If they take Rose, they have to trade Thomas. If they take Beasley, they probably have to trade Thomas (unless they find a buyer for Nocioni).

If Paxson takes Beasley, he is doing it knowing that Beasley is primarily an offensive player. One with character questions (albeit small ones). One who might struggle with NBA double teams early on. Paxson does not have a team full of shooters who can capitalize off of the double teams Beasley will surely get.

Rose on the other hand is a good height for PG, a legit 6'3". He plays D, and is incredibly athletic and fast. He can create for other players exactly as the roster is comprised today. Once Rose is up to speed, I thin Thomas, Noah, and Deng will be big beneficiaries.

Surrounding Options:
Brand: Clips need a PG and scoring. However, he doesn't fit with the uptempo game I would envision with Rose. And besides, the Clips don't generally pay players top dollar in FA (Tim Thomas excepted).

Marion: They need a PG in the worst way. Marion is locked in for a long time, at a high price. I think it's within the realm of possibility that they deal Marion to the Bulls for a package surrounding Hinrich. Normally, I would think that's a stretch. But given that he was traded for a negative value Shaq, anything's possible.

Rose+Beasley: Think of the Heat with Wade, Marion, Hinrich, Gordon and Tyrus Thomas. That would be a pretty powerful, young team. Is it enough for Beasley? Probably not. Would it make sense for the Bulls to push back the plan a couple years? Hell ya.

One under the radar guy I would really love is Andris Biedrins from the Warriors. I don't see a good match between the two teams, but I would love to see him on the Bulls. He's under-rated and would really round out the big man rotation.

Bears Draft

In some circles, there has been a lot of complaining about the Bears and their QB position. "Why didn't they draft a QB?" The simple answer is that a QB ain't gonna help anytime soon, and this years QB crop sucked. But that's not enough for certain name recognition loving fans.

Jon for example thinks we should take a QB EVERY year until we get a stud. Look, the fact is that drafting QBs is hard. The fact that Tom Brady was a 6th rounder proves that. Basically speaking it's a crap shoot. Besides, there's only one QB on the field - so the likelihood that a drafted QB will contribute is drastically less than other positions, where PT might be easier to come by.

So I did a little research. Other than one or two spots here, it looks like JA did the right thing by NOT drafting QBs.
Bears Round 2: Brian Brohm (Henne to Dolphins, Flacco to Falcons)
Bears Round 3: Jeremy Zuttah (OG\OT, Rutgers), Kevin Smith (RB, Central Florida)

*Notes: Clady 'falls' a little bit here. I could be way off, but at the end of the day, Denver goes with Albert who is the #2 lineman. The Panthers take a mauler with huge upside. Williams to the Bears because Jerry Angelo thinks Williams has a higher floor than Clady.

Round 2: Brohm is the best of the 2nd tier of QBs. Henne and Flacco have their suitors, but Brohm will be the 2nd best QB in this class three years from now.

Round 3: Bears start Zuttah at OG, and transfer him to ORT after John Tait goes away. They also get Kevin Smith, a productive, tough if not flashy back.

Fearless projection: Cedric Benson does not play a down for the Bears in 08. He will either be cut or on the DL depending on how serious his injury is.

Chad Johnson, paying for the sins of Carl Pickens

A few NFL noteworthy issues:

1. The Benglas are still irritated over Carl Pickens and Corey Dillon. You'd think they would figure out the one commonality in all these cases and change their culture. Turning down a 1&3 or better is not making this a better team. They should be able to get a 1&3 this year and be ecstatic. He's not worth that much.

2. ViQueens trade their 1 and two 3s to Chefs for a guy with 2 DUIs and this close to an extension. I wonder what the over under is for weeks till he gets another DUI or ends up beating his wife or is on a party boat. They'll have a great DLine, but this is still a stupid move.

3. Alexander. I think he gets signed by the Iggles or sits for a long time. Too many good cheap backs in the 2-4 round this year.

4. Based on the Chefs acquiring #17, people think they'll take a DLineman at 5 (Gholston?). But the seriously scary thing is with all those picks, the Chefs are armed to trade ahead of the Bears, Panthers and Brroncos. I am pretty convinced that none of the top OL will be there at 14. Angelo is not a guy who likes to trade up. But he put himself into a corner by not signing any of the FA OL. If he doesn't trade up, he almost has to look at trading out of Round 1. Atlanta (34, 37).

That would give him the ability to take one of the 2nd tier OTs, a RB, and a QB in Rd2. That's his style. What he SHOULD do is trade up to ensure he gets Williams, Otah, Clady or Albert.

Sox Hitters

After two weeks of the season, the White Sox have these batters hitting well below their career averages:

Thome-.171
Uribe-.184
Cabrera-.225
Konerko-.229

What are they going to do?!

Oh wait, they are leading the America League in runs scored. Then again, he's a Knicks beat writer, so the Bulls season must look like cake and ice cream compared to the Blackhawk-ian mess the Knicks are.

The Knicks, if you recall, voted to sit Marbury after he left the team and went to NJ. Isiah let him play. That, apparently, was the wrong thing to do. I'm all for that, because Isiah is always wrong, even when he changes his mind.

But in this case, we have a guy who admitted the team quit on the last coach and who is being paid $15m this year and a guy who can't play running the team. As for the specific matter, it's Boylan's fault. Either he should have suspended Noah 2 games in the first place, or he should have told the team 1 game was enough. The main point being, he should have known that the players were that pissed and nipped it in the bud.

In a larger sense this is on Pax's head. He has a guy on his team that clashed with coaches, quit on his coach, and is now calling out rookies for clashing with coaches. The players that SHOULD be leading this aren't leaders (Hinrich) or are playing for contracts with no guarantee that they'll be here tomorrow let alone next year.

What a mess.

They're just not that good

Last year the Bulls were inflated. Skiles got them to play hard and harder. They hustled and outworked their opponents, their guys were on the upswing. Good times ahead. Bring on the Celtics!

Not so much. Thing is, Deng hasn't progressed. Gordon is good, but not nearly as good as he thinks he is. And Hinrich and Gordon don't fit well in the backcourt. People are still talking about this season as if it can be rescued. For what? A first round playoff exit? Pass.

The Bulls overacheived last season. They might be playing slightly worse than they should be right now, but in no way are they constructed to be contenders.

In the game tonight, Aaron Gray and Tyrus Thomas were a combined +33 in 29m. Ben Wallace was -22 in 33.

Everyone loved the Ben Wallace signing at the time, myself included. You needed to see if the kids could step it up. Now we know they can't. It was a very bad idea to trade Chandler, which flat out was a money move, but that's almost beside the point now.

If Paxson is creative, he might be able to get Josh Smith from the Hawks who have too many people at 3/4. Gordon + Tyrus Thomas for Josh Smith and Speedy Claxton's bad contract? I admit it doesn't make perfect sense. But it comes close, which is more than Sam Smith can say half the time.

What about Ben Wallace for Andrei Kirilenko + Jarron Collins? Wallace has less time on his contract (which goes down year by year).

Paxson has to do something if he truly wants this team to contend.

KW's Winter of Discontent?

1 month

Too many people are worried about the White Sox roster. They don't like this trade, or that signing. My biggest complaint is that people complain that there's no talent in the farm system, and then whine when that lack of talent is traded away.

Of all the prospects that KW has traded away, only one is right now looking like he might be something - Chris Young. Everyone raise their hands who is missing Michael Morse or Jeremy Reed right now. What about Matt Ginter or Brian Simmons or Mike Sirotka?

So everyone lighten up. Let's look at what KW has done here for a second. He's addressed SS with a + Defender and maybe average LO man. He's improved the pen with Linebrink.

He acquired two OFs who are under control for several years at reasonable rates (Quentin and Swisher). We have two young speedy guys (Owens\Richar) who might someday grow into top of the order guys - or may not.

Did we take the hit on Starting Pitching? Sure, trading Garland away hurts the stability of the rotation. But when the hell was Gonzalez going to pitch anyway? Was he proven? NO. Floyd and Danks have proven more at the MLB level than Gonzalez. They are less risky (lower ceiling, but lower risk too). The point is, with the kids you have to bite the bullet sometime, and there's really no guarantee that De Los Santos or Gonzalez don't turn into Ruffcorn. So had we kept them, Phil Rogers would still complain about not pitching the veteran until it was already too late.

So does that make the White Sox a clear contender for 2008? I have no clue. But here's the thing. If they tank, then we should be able to get decent prospects for Thome, Konerko and Dye - and maybe Vazquez.

Then Phil Rogers can complain about how KW is quitting on the present.

He's Such a Romo

Heard and read a lot about the QB matchup for Sunday night's game. Can you figure out which QB is which in these comparisons after two games?

29-53 54.7% completion %
32-57 56.1% completion %

The first one is Romo - not the all-time great QB that everyone is talking about (Brady's % is 79% by the way-sick.) I heard a lot of analysis last night on radio and HBO and they conclude that completion percentage and the TD/INT ratio are the most important stats to look at. Romo's % is horse-crap (28th in league) and he's played crappy Ds. He will get rattled Sunday and the Bears D will punish him. Peanut will have a big game.
Final Score: Bears-24 Dallas-13

The other QB with 56% is Rex.

It is almost a foregone conclusion that the Bucks will screw up this pick and take Spencer Hawes. How can you not take a guy who will follow in the line of great tall slow white guys like Paul Mokeski, Jack Sikma and Larry Krystowiak?

The Hawks will do the wrong thing. It is almost impossible to understand, but their ownership is even more screwed up than the hockey club with the same name. It is completely obvious that the Hawks should take Conley at 3, and the best available at 11. But they'll probably take yet another Forward and take Acie Law or trade for Jose Calderon wit the 11th pick. This will force them to trade Marvin Williams for no significant immediate help.

If Garnett gets traded, it happens tonight.

If Kobe gets traded, it won't happen until after 7/1. The only team he will be traded to is the Bulls, and even then, it will be for pennies on the dollar. So, in other words, Kobe won't be traded either.

Busts:
Acie Law
Javaris Crittenton
Julian Wright
Corey Brewer (unless you think being the next Stacey Augmon is a great thing)

Boom:
Conley
Thaddeus Young
Horford

Assuming Oden, Durant, Horford and Conley are all off the board, my wish list for the Bulls:

Noah
Jeff Green
Brewer
Yi
Hawes

Reasons # 1245 that golf is not a sport

#1245: There is no sport in which this guy:

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"
