Pope Benedict XVI in shock resignation -Vatican

2013-02-11T03:31:00.000-08:00

The Pope is to resign at the end of this month in an entirely unexpected development, the Vatican has confirmed.

The 85-year-old became Pope Benedict XVI in April 2005 following the death of John Paul II.

The reasons behind the head of the Catholic Church's surprise resignation have yet to emerge.

Resignations from the papacy are not unknown, but this is the first in the modern era, which has been marked by pontiffs dying while in office.

At 78, the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was one of the oldest new popes in history when elected.

He took the helm as one of the fiercest storms the Catholic Church has faced in decades - the scandal of child sex abuse by priests - was breaking.

Here is his resignation statement in full:

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

From the Vatican, 10 February 2013

Newsweek Magazine goodbyes with print media

2012-12-24T00:52:00.001-08:00

At the end of this year, Newsweek Magazine will stop producing print content and shift all content to its online magazine Newsweek Global. In a move that seems to echo the future of print media in general, they have abandoned the hard copy and will be producing content solely for tablets and browsers. The move was explained as being a far more cost-effective, more efficient means to reach readers in the global market. Some of the content will also be released on their sister site The Daily Beast.

They were quick to say that the magazine was not saying good-bye, but was instead just shifting to purely digital distribution. However, the change will bring about massive changes to the structure of the organization and will likely cause many an employee to have to find work elsewhere.

The magazine’s last cover is a black and white shot of the old Newsweek building with a hashtag that reads #THELASTPRINTISSUE. It will be curious to see how online distro will affect what was once one of the the big boys in print media.

Clint Eastwood Full Speech 2012, Talks To Invisible Obama

2012-09-02T06:31:00.001-07:00

This was Clint Eastwood full speech at the Republican National Convention Thursday evening (August 30). Watch the video:

EASTWOOD SPEECH
Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you very much. Save a little for Mitt.

(APPLAUSE)

I know what you are thinking. You are thinking, what’s a movie tradesman doing out here? You know they are all left wingers out there, left of Lenin. At least that is what people think. That is not really the case. There are a lot of conservative people, a lot of moderate people, Republicans, Democrats, in Hollywood. It is just that the conservative people by the nature of the word itself play closer to the vest. They do not go around hot dogging it.

(APPLAUSE)

So - but they are there, believe me, they are there. I just think, in fact, some of them around town, I saw John Voigt, a lot of people around.

(APPLAUSE)

John’s here, an academy award winner, a terrific guy. These people are all like-minded, like all of us.

So I - so I’ve got Mr. Obama sitting here. And he’s - I was going to ask him a couple of questions. But - you know about - I remember three and a half years ago, when Mr. Obama won the election. And though I was not a big supporter, I was watching that night when he was having that thing and they were talking about hope and change and they were talking about, yes we can, and it was dark outdoors, and it was nice, and people were lighting candles.

They were saying, I just thought, this was great. Everybody is trying, Oprah was crying.

(LAUGHTER)

EASTWOOD: I was even crying. And then finally - and I haven’t cried that hard since I found out that there is 23 million unemployed people in this country.

(APPLAUSE)

Now that is something to cry for because that is a disgrace, a national disgrace, and we haven’t done enough, obviously - this administration hasn’t done enough to cure that. Whenever interest they have is not strong enough, and I think possibly now it may be time for somebody else to come along and solve the problem.

(APPLAUSE)

So, Mr. President, how do you handle promises that you have made when you were running for election, and how do you handle them?

I mean, what do you say to people? Do you just - you know - I know - people were wondering - you don’t - handle that OK. Well, I know even people in your own party were very disappointed when you didn’t close Gitmo. And I thought, well closing Gitmo - why close that, we spent so much money on it. But, I thought maybe as an excuse - what do you mean shut up?

(LAUGHTER)

OK, I thought maybe it was just because somebody had the stupid idea of trying terrorists in downtown New York City.

(APPLAUSE)

I’ve got to to hand it to you. I have to give credit where credit is due. You did finally overrule that finally. And that’s - now we are moving onward. I know you were against the war in Iraq, and that’s okay. But you thought the war in Afghanistan was OK. You know, I mean - you thought that was something worth doing. We didn’t check with the Russians to see how did it - they did there for 10 years.

(APPLAUSE)

But we did it, and it is something to be thought about, and I think that, when we get to maybe - I think you’ve mentioned something about having a target date for bringing everybody home. You gave that target date, and I think Mr. Romney asked the only sensible question, you know, he says: "Why are you giving the date out now? Why don’t you just bring them home tomorrow morning?"

(APPLAUSE)

And I thought - I thought, yeah - I am not going to shut up, it is my turn.

(LAUGHTER)

So anyway, we’re going to have - we’re going to have to have a little chat about that. And then, I just wondered, all these promises - I wondered about when the - what do you want me to tell Romney? I can’t tell him to do that. I can’t tell him to do that to himself.

(APPLAUSE)

You’re crazy, you’re absolutely crazy. You’re getting as bad as Biden.

(APPLAUSE)

Of course we all now Biden is the intellect of the Democratic party.

(LAUGHTER)

Kind of a grin with a body behind it.

(LAUGHTER)

But I just think that there is so much to be done, and I think that Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan are two guys that can come along. See, I never thought it was a good idea for attorneys to the president, anyway.

(APPLAUSE)

I think attorneys are so busy - you know they’re always taught to argue everything, and always weight everything - weigh both sides.

They are always devil’s advocating this and bifurcating this and bifurcating that. You know all that stuff. But, I think it is maybe time - what do you think - for maybe a businessman. How about that?

(APPLAUSE)

A stellar businessman. Quote, unquote, "a stellar businessman."

And I think it’s that time. And I think if you just step aside and Mr. Romney can kind of take over. You can maybe still use a plane.

(APPLAUSE)

Though maybe a smaller one. Not that big gas guzzler you are going around to colleges and talking about student loans and stuff like that.

(APPLAUSE)

You are an - an ecological man. Why would you want to drive that around?

OK, well anyway. All right, I’m sorry. I can’t do that to myself either.

(APPLAUSE)

I would just like to say something, ladies and gentlemen. Something that I think is very important. It is that, you, we - we own this country.

(APPLAUSE)

We - we own it. It is not you owning it, and not politicians owning it. Politicians are employees of ours.

(APPLAUSE)

And - so - they are just going to come around and beg for votes every few years. It is the same old deal. But I just think it is important that you realize , that you’re the best in the world. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican or whether you’re libertarian or whatever, you are the best. And we should not ever forget that. And when somebody does not do the job, we got to let them go.

(APPLAUSE)

Okay, just remember that. And I’m speaking out for everybody out there. It doesn’t hurt, we don’t have to be.

(AUDIENCE MEMBER): (inaudible)

(LAUGHTER)

I do not say that word anymore. Well, maybe one last time.

(LAUGHTER)

We don’t have to be - what I’m saying, we do not have to be metal (ph) masochists and vote for somebody that we don’t really even want in office just because they seem to be nice guys or maybe not so nice guys, if you look at some of the recent ads going out there, I don’t know.

(APPLAUSE)

But OK. You want to make my day?

(APPLAUSE)

All right. I started, you finish it. Go ahead.

AUDIENCE: Make my day!

EASTWOOD: Thank you. Thank you very much.

(APPLAUSE)

Miley Cyrus Naked Picture in Bathtub

2012-08-21T01:51:00.001-07:00

It is hot in the web when Miley Cyrus reportedly took some hot photos for her boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth.

A photo of Cyrus naked in a bathtub covering her breasts showing off her dreamcatcher tattoo and her signature side-boob look. It was taken by friend and photographer Vijat Mohindra. This sexy photo is featured on Mohindra’s website along with several other hot, but fully-clothed photos.

The photo was allegedly intended to be for Liam's eyes only, but it is now prominently featured on Mohindra's website. Request for comment from the photographer's reps were not immediately returned.

It has to be mentioned that the blog "Life of the Rich and Famous" first posted the photo and claims it was taken in 2011, when Cyrus was just 18. Mohindra and Cyrus are known to be close pals as he actually documented the singer's "Gypsy Heart" tour in the spring of 2011.

Regardless of whether or not the photos were meant to be private, it's weird that the photo is reminiscent of Miley's 2008 "Vanity Fair" cover shot by photographer Annie Leibovitz. The cover photo famously featured Cyrus at the age of 15 wearing nothing but a white sheet.

Silver Medal is 92.5% Silver, 7.5% Copper.

2012 London Olympics: Mystery Lady Revealed

2012-07-29T05:55:00.000-07:00

London: The mystery woman who make a controversy in team India`s at London Olympics 2012 Opening Ceremony has been identified. As per the reports she is Madhura Honey, a postgraduate student, hailing from Bangalore.

A young lady in red shirt and blue trouser was seen leading the Indian contingent in the march past alongside Beijing Games bronze-medal winner Sushil Kumar and her presence had created a lot of buzz as nobody had a clue as to who she was.

In the parade, the Indian men wore traditional blazers and Rajasthani yellow turbans while the female atheletes wore yellow sarees while this lady wore red shirt and blue trouser which get more attention as if she was the leader of the group. The lady`s presence had created a flutter and the Indian media covering the Games, had sought clarification from the team management.

Acting chef de mission of the Indian contingent Brig P K Muralidharan Raja was understandably agitated that a person who was not part of the delegation was allowed to accompany the team and hog the limelight in the process.

"She had no business to walk in with the Indian contingent and we are taking up the issue with the organisers. We don`t know who she is and why she was allowed to walk in. It is a shame that she was with the athletes in the march past", Raja earlier said.

"The Indian contingent was shown for hardly ten seconds in the tv coverage and the entire focus sadly was on this lady, instead of the athletes," Raja rued.

It has also been reported that the woman had uploaded the photographs of her Olympic passes on Facebook and had deactivated her account after her presence stirred a controversy.

The Indians have fielded 81 athletes, the largest ever in the history of the Games, but only 40 athletes and around 11 officials participated in the parade at the opening ceremony, which showcased Great Britain`s rich heritage combined with dazzling fireworks and stunning visual effects.

Madonna Sued Copyright Infringement Over Vogue

2012-07-13T06:33:00.000-07:00

Madonna is being sued over her dance mega hit "Vogue" after a record company claimed that Madonna used their music.

To be more specific, the record company named "VMG Salsoul" filed the lawsuit against Madonna in L.A., claiming that The Queen of Pop sampled the horns and strings from "Salsoul Orchestra's" 1977 dance song "Chicago Bus Stop (Ooh, I Love It)."

According to the lawsuit, Madonna never paid to use the samples and has illegally profited off the instrumentals since she released "Vogue" in 1990.

Why it takes so long for the company to file the case? "VMG Salsoul" reason out that the samples aren't obvious. It was only recently detected, thanks to new technology that can help isolate and identify individual sounds.

"VMG Salsoul" is now filing a lawsuit against Madonna for copyright infringement, demanding unspecified damages.

Tom Cruise undergo Hair Transplant?

2012-07-05T04:06:00.000-07:00

Tom Cruise managed to maintain his hairline through all these years. Cruise surprisingly continues to keep his remarkably full hairline.

It is common that the hair loss risk increases with age. But, specifically, at Cruise's age is defying a nearly 50% chance of hair loss! The question still remains: "How does he do it?"

According to Star Magazine, Cruise is using hair loss treatments to hold onto his locks as well. "Tom is using Rogaine because his (hair) is thinning. Plus he gets weekly massages to stimulate growth," an insider told Star Magazine.

It has to be noted that Tom had shaved his hair short once before after divorcing from ex-wife Nicole Kidman, but it appears that Tom isn’t prepared for a bald look he can’t control.

Male pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men but there are many factors that could have contributed to Cruise’s thinning hair, which has always been thick and luscious. Factors such as stress and nutritional deficiencies are just some things that can lead to excess shedding. The cause of Cruise’s hair loss is unclear. There are rumors though that Tom uses Rogaine or minoxidil, which is a clinically proven hair loss treatment.

According to specialists, using minoxidil alone is unlikely to solely prevent genetic hair loss. There are a few trusted hair loss treatments available but should not everyone stick to one particular solution. When you suffer from severe hair loss, it is suggested that you should consult a specialist to get personalized advice and an individualized treatment program which tackles the situation from every angle.

According to "In Touch magazine", Tom Cruise recently began utilizing a low level laser therapy (LLLT) cap to prevent losing his "movie star" hair. Allegedly, a Cruise's pal revealed that Cruise is concerned about potential hair loss and started using the Hands Free Hair Rejuvenator cap as a way to stop any progressive thinning.

Although a representative for Cruise claimed the story is "ludicrous," the situation brings an interesting question to light: "Is the Hands Free Hair Rejuvenator cap a valid hair loss prevention device?"

Like many other "at home" low level laser therapy devices, the Hands Free Hair Rejuvenator is a cap that, when placed upon the head of any hair loss suffering man or woman, allegedly penetrates the scalp and stimulates follicular growth.

UN Transition Plan Rejected by Syrian Opposition

2012-07-01T03:28:00.000-07:00

The U.N.-brokered peace plan for Syria’s political transition was rejected by Syrian opposition groups. The opposition say that it was a waste of time and ambiguous.

An international conference in Geneva on Saturday accepted international envoy Kofi Annan's plan that calls for the creation of a transitional government, but at Russia's insistence the compromise agreement left the door open to Syria's president being part of it.

Bassam Kodmani, spokesperson for the Syrian National Council opposition umbrella group, says the agreement is "ambiguous" and lacks a mechanism or timetable for implementation.

Haitham Maleh, a Veteran Syrian opposition figure, says the agreement was "a waste of time" and pledged Sunday not to sit with President Bashar Assad or members of his "murderous" regime.

The Last Pinta Island Tortoise Died

2012-06-25T03:16:00.001-07:00

Lonesome George, the last Pinta Island tortoise has died, leaving the world one species poorer. Lonesome George was discovered on Pinta Island in 1972 at a time when tortoises of his type were already believed to be extinct. The animal had been part of the park service's tortoise program.

The Galapagos National Park Service said in a statement “The only remaining Pinta Island tortoise and celebrated conservation icon passed away Sunday”. Estimated to be more than 100 years old, the creature's cause of death remains unclear and a necropsy is planned.Lonesome George's longtime caretaker, Fausto Llerena, found the tortoise's remains stretched out in the "direction of his watering hole" on Santa Cruz Island.

"Later two females from the Espanola tortoise population (the species most closely related to Pinta tortoises genetically) were with George until the end," the park service said but the repeated efforts to breed Lonesome George failed.

In honor of Lonesome George, the park service said it was convening an international workshop in July on management strategies for restoring tortoise populations over the next decade.

The Galapagos Islands, situated about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) off Ecuador's coast, is considered a haven for tortoises.

Kim Kardashian will Marry Kanye West?

2012-06-18T04:25:00.000-07:00

After the failed marriage of Kim Kardashian to his soon-to-be ex-husband Kris Humphries, she wasted no time in moving on with rapper Kanye West. The Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger heartily approves it.

Although Kim is in the middle of a messy divorce and she's only been dating Kanye a couple of months, Patti truly believes that Kim will marry Kanye. "This is a good, good fit for her, and I hope that Kris, her mother, gives the blessing because I think they'll end up getting married. I really do," Stanger told HollywoodLife.

"They have the attraction, (Kanye's) got the money, he's got the talent, (Kim's) got the money. She traded up for a change, and this is beyond (ex-boyfriend) Reggie (Bush). It's an equal fit, if not bigger," Stanger claimed.

The matchmaker credits the couple's longtime friendship for one of the reasons they get along so well and reinforced why that makes for a great relationship.

"I love it. KK babies all the way! I think that they both made a mistake at one point in their life. They understand each other and they were friends first. Friends are the best foundation for a really good marriage," she quoted as saying.

And as for dating someone else seriously while not being divorced yet, Patti thinks Kim should go for it and that Kris was never really the one for her.

Henry Hill who inspired the classic film GoodFellas died Tuesday at a Los Angeles hospital after a long illness.

Hill, 69, the infamous mob informant was the first to admit that he did “a lot of bad things back then. He spent more than a decade in the federal witness protection program and later made various attempts to cash in on his notoriety as an ex-gangster.

“I shot at people. I busted a lot of heads, and I buried a lot of bodies,” he told the London Telegraph in 2010. “You can try to justify it by saying they deserved it, that they had it coming, but some just got whacked for absolutely no reason at all”, Hill said in an interview

Hill’s story of how he worked for the Lucchese mafia family in New York was told by author Nicholas Pileggi in the book “Wiseguy.” That became the basis for director Martin Scorsese’s 1990 film “GoodFellas.”

In 2004, long after he had left the witness protection program, Hill told The Times, “I have no idea why people are so interested in gangsters. Come on, people are bored.” Nonetheless, he wrote his own account of his life published that year called “Gangsters and Goodfellas: The Mob, Witness Protection, and Life on the Run.”

People with body dysmorphic disorder are intensely obsess over their appearance and body image, often for many hours a day, and may feel very depressed or even suicidal.

According to a new study, people who restrict how much they eat because they have body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), may be at higher risk of taking their own lives.
Research published in the journal Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior shows that restricting food intake because of BDD is linked with a doubled risk of attempting suicide. However, researchers did not find a link between restricting food intake because of BDD and ideas of suicide.

The study included 200 people (more than half were women) who had BDD. They were all between ages of 14 and 64, and the number of past suicide attempts ranged from 0 to 25.

Body dysmorphic disorder occurs when a person is convinced that something about his or her appearance is wrong (even though nothing is actually wrong). The researchers reported that about 25 percent of people with this condition have attempted suicide, and 75 percent of people with the condition think that that their lives aren't worth living.

Golden Bridge at 75

May 27, 2012 marks the diamond jubilee of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. For the past 75 years, the 1.7-mile suspension bridge has not only connected the northern tip of San Francisco to lush Marin County headlands, it has also become one of the most recognized American icons. The yearlong celebration is aptly titled “Bridging Us All.”

Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937. It was desperately needed to alleviate the traffic from the ferries. Despite the Great Depression, the areas surrounding San Francisco voted and passed the bond measure to pay for the bridge by using their homes and businesses as collateral to finish the construction of the Golden Bridge.

Marking the bridge’s 75 years in existence, 75 events are planned this year, with a proper birthday bash over Memorial Day weekend. Numerous celebrations ranging from outdoor concerts to historic exhibitions will take place along the four-mile stretch of waterfront from Fort Point to Pier 39. A grand fireworks befitting of the milestone cap the weekend.
