The Growth Engines of the World Economy to 2025

About this event:

Jim O’Neill will deliver a keynote address on The Growth Engines of the World Economy to 2025. In the ten years since he coined the acronym BRIC, the transformation of the global economy, driven by Brazil, Russia, India and China, has led O’Neill and his colleagues in Goldman Sachs to recently re-classify these “emerging economies” as “growth economies.”

Such countries are characterized by an economy that accounts for at least 1% of current global GDP, a factor that has already led Goldman Sachs to extend “growth economy” classification beyond the BRICs to include Mexico, Turkey, South Korea and Indonesia.

About the speaker:

Jim O’Neill was appointed chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management in 2010. As chairman, he is involved in helping to guide all aspects of GSAM’s business around the world. Prior to this, he was head of global economics, commodities and strategy research at Goldman Sachs.

Jim earned a degree in economics from Sheffield University in 1978 and a PhD from the University of Surrey in 1982. He received an honorary doctorate from the Institute of Education, University of London, in 2009 for his educational philanthropy. Jim founded SHINE, an educational charity over eleven years ago, benefiting the most disadvantaged people in urban London. He is the author of The Growth Map: Economic Opportunity in the BRICs and Beyond (2011).

Iceland and the EU

About the speech:

Iceland applied for EU membership in the wake of its financial crisis of 2008. Since then its application process has progressed at an unprecedented speed. Will Iceland quickly follow Croatia to become the EU’s twenty-ninth member? Or will differences in key areas such as fisheries, agriculture and environmental policy prove too difficult to overcome? Ambassador Jóhannesson is ideally placed to comment on the negotiation process and the prospects of Icelandic accession to the EU.

About the speaker:

Ambassador Stefán Haukur Jóhannesson is one of Iceland’s most experienced international negotiators. In 2009, he was appointed as the Chief Negotiator for EU Accession after serving four years as Iceland’s Ambassador to the EU. He has also represented Iceland at the World Trade Organisation, the European Free Trade Association and the United Nations.
