The criminal judicial system in America is getting increasingly inhuman & needs to be corrected

For all the propaganda on Human Rights that the United States preaches while sermonising to the rest of the world, it continues to be its worst violator. It remains the hypocrisy of the first order that while America organizes the execution of Saddam Hussein, it simultaneously ignores the plight of several others that rot in the prisons of its own country. As on April 1, 2006, 38 states of United States Federal government and the US military took up capital punishment for those convicted of heinous crimes. It must also be brought to notice that on the same date, about 3,370 convicted prisoners across the country were in the death row. Even if the debate related to the need of capital punishment is kept apart, the treatment that has been meted out to these outlaws has been anything but ‘humane’. Though the American judiciary (Roper V. Simmons, 1 March, 2005) has outlawed capital punishment for juveniles and child offenders, the US along with Somalia remain the only two countries in the world that have not ratifyed the United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child. It must simultaneously be recorded that America’s treatment of mentally ill death row inmates has been barbaric. When President Clinton was approaching the end of his term in office, he claimed that America had become more humane in the eight years of his administration.

Sony is taking concrete steps towards a video Walkman...

Sony, on the other hand, is taking concrete steps towards a video Walkman and also towards improving its soft ware expertise, which has been its weak point. Its latest range of walkman players has an integrated noise cancellation technology, which reduces background noise in the headphones by nearly 75%. Furthermore, analysts forecast that the real competition for iPod is coming from mobile phones, which are fast becoming the favourite convergence device providing everything from music, videos and internet. Certainly, as mobile phones pack in more and more gigabytes of data and also come up with a scintillating range of audio and video features, chances are very high that the iPod could lose some sheen in the coming future. While the past five years have seen a glorious run for the iPod, it will now have to give up some ground to the competition now. “The islands can easily be explored by foot,” offers Arttu. From a distance, I could make out a church, one that actually doubles as a lighthouse! A solitary bridge away lies the largest of the islands, and a (slightly muted) view of the remnants of what was once a fortress, now only holding out against the onslaught of time… Much to my surprise, Arttu had quite a few surprises to pull out of his hat. One of them was called Hameenlinna, and reaching there involved a journey past meadows and sprawling countryside, all of it interspersed with languid lakes. Hämeenlinna is the oldest town that Finland has to offer, and is caught at the captivating crossroads of nature and culture. As if bearing testament to the blast from the past that this township is, there is a medieval castle on the shores of Lake Vanajavesi dating back to the 13th century. While the fortress served as a prison until 1972, it was thrown open to tourists soon after and has never looked back since… At this point, I was starting to warm up to not just the cooler climes, but also Arttu’s seemingly-icy bearing. In fact, I could swear that at times, I saw the slightest vestiges of a smirk on occasion when I passed a wayward comment or two. As the wonders of Finland unraveled before me endlessly, I was shepherded along to Aulanko Park, unremarkable in every other way except for the settings that seem to be plucked straight from the lap oh history, starkly reminiscent of an English-style park. While the figures hold great promise, it is certainly not going to be all that rosy for the FM channels to sustain themselves and stand out among the crowd. “The key to survive will be to differentiate,” states Rana Barua, National Head Marketing, Radio City. With so many channels in the fray, the biggest danger lurking is of lack of differentiation. “Most players will want to jump on to the biggest category (contemporary chartbusters), which will result in some channels flopping, some re-inventing themselves and finally evolving into various categories according to the demand of the market,” offers Kaushik Ghose, Senior Vice President Marketing, Radio Mirchi. With the pan India approach of the Phase II of FM expansion, many of India’s C and D class towns will soon get their own FM stations. But the strategy that works for the metros may not work for these sleepy suburbs of India, who are yet untouched by the radio revolution. Anurradha Prasad of BAG films is quick to add, “The trick is how to touch the pulse of the people and give them what they will love.” When it comes to sustainability, the revenue model is extremely critical and depends largely on advertisements. Today, advertising in radio accounts only for about 2% of total advertising in India, but with so many stations coming up, especially in small towns, the revenues are bound to go through the roof.

Genghis Khan was pronounced as a feudal oppressor by the Soviet...

For seventy years during the reign of Communism in Mongolia, Genghis Khan was pronounced as a feudal oppressor by the Soviet backed government and hence, everything related to him was tabooed. Democratic now for a good four fourteen years, the natives are going all out reclaiming and reinstating Genghis Khan as their national hero. From newborn babies, schools and streets to vodka brands, everything is being baptised after the Emperor of all Emperors and now even a $5 million statue depicting him and his sons is being erected in its capital city Ulaanbaatar – which might be renamed Genghis City! It’s easy to conclude that the pride the Mongolians feel for the man viewed by the world as a barbaric tyrant who ravaged, pillaged, murdered and raped to suit his fancies is surely misplaced. What with 17 million people considered to be inheritors of his genes, it surely strengthens the notion. But as many Mongols will tell you, Khan’s empire had in place a system of ensuring participatory government, rule by law, equality and personal freedoms, all of which later became the basic tenets of democracy.

Zee’s Dish TV :: IIPM Publication

Even in the case of Direct-to-Home (DTH) service, Zee’s Dish TV has the early bird advantage in the race. Currently, the network claims a huge sub-scriber base for its DTH services, sitting pretty at 1.3 million subscribers. In contrast, their main rival Sky TV (jointly promoted by the Tata Group and Star Network), which was slated to be launched in July this year, has been caught in a controversy over content sharing with Zee and is now expected to be launched in August 2006. Snaps Jawahar Goel, Vice Chairman, Zee Telefi lms Limited, “According to the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) guidelines, if a DTH player is a broadcaster, it has to share content with the competitors, but Star does not respect the laws of the land.” Moreover, Zee has also got Sony’s bouquet of channels on board. Zee has also emerged as the largest cable operator (Siti Cable) in India with an estimated reach of a creditable 6.5 million homes. Now that it is poised to utilise the potential of the television space, Zee is on a new journey. It has entered into the inimitable print media with investments of a whopping Rs.1 billion in the Mumbai daily Daily News & Analysis in the year 2005 in partnership with the Dainik Bhaskar Group. This clearly is a step towards being in all segments.

Videocon moves west towards Dubya land (IIPM Publication)

Videocon, a company that has been largely promoted as an Indian Multinational, has appointed Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PWC) to negotiate its investments in North America. The company is interested in acquiring the LCD manufacturing plant of digital imaging and electronics major Polaroid, which is a subsidiary of Petters Group worldwide. The deal between PWC and Videocon is valued at $200 million. The move to appoint PWC also reflects Videocon’s intentions to get a stronghold in the North American market, which is a very crucial junction for any multinational. The acquisition would mark the formal entry of Videocon in the imaging business both globally and in India.

Dish TV launched in 2003 (IIPM Publication)

Dish TV launched in 2003, and had invited Star and Sony to broadcast their channels through their platform; this was in tune with a December 2004 TRAI mandate advising DTH participants to make all channels available to each other without bias. Jawahar Goel, Vice-Chairman Essel Group (Zee promotors), confirmed, “Dish TV has already approached Star and Sony.” Despite TRAI rulings, Star had declined the offer then. But now, would the new rapprochement be gainful to both Zee’s Dish TV & Star’s Tata Sky?

Boeing flying high with 747-8

Boeing stretches its wings in the air. US-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co. has launched a stretched and more efficient version of the 747, the 747-8, which will be its biggest offering in recent times. The 747-8 is expected to lower trip costs by almost 20%. It will have a seating capacity of 450 passengers, with thirty four more seats than the existing 747-400, and will be able to carry 15 more tonnes of freight. Boeing will buy eight cargo versions of the 747-8 from Nippon Cargo Airlines Co., based in Japan and ten aircrafts from Cargolux Airlines International SA, based in Luxembourg. Read More...
