" width="300" height="224" />It’s not surprising that sustainable lifestyles are a lot easier to accomplish for those who live in rural and suburban areas. In cities and other urban areas, it can be much more difficult to find the space to remain sustainable – not to mention that ordinances are much more restrictive depending upon where you live. This being said, there are a lot of steps that can be taken to keep you and your family supplied in the event of an emergency. One of the least expensive and most practical can be to keep a few chickens at home.

Building a Coop

If you do decide to keep chickens at home, the obvious first thing you’re going to need is a coop for them to live in. This is particularly true if you’re in an urban environment with very little space. You’re going to have to keep your chickens safe and out of your neighbors’ hair, too. Fortunately, there are simple and inexpensive steps you can take to protect your chickens and keep them both happy and out of your neighbor’s yard, too.

Inexpensive, simple coops can be constructed with some carpentry nails, a few 2×4’s, some wooden dowels or other rods and some chicken wire. Depending upon your space, a couple sheets of siding or other plastic/vinyl sheeting can top off the structure.

You are going to want to build a simple frame from the 2×4’s, wrap it with well-secured chicken wire and then cover the structure with the plastic/vinyl sheeting to keep it secure and shaded. You can create a simple entrance in the front of the chicken wire, or simple build the frame so it swings open on one side.

Then, secure the wooden dowels or rods to the chicken wire with a couple pieces of wire on each side for roosting purposes. You can also construct a few inexpensive nesting boxes out of 2×4’s or even inexpensive plywood so your hens have somewhere to nest and lay.

Hens, not Roosters

Unless you want fertilized eggs, loud morning crowning and/or a gaggle of wee little chicks, you’re going to want to make sure you stock up with a handful of hens rather than roosters. If you buy you chicks from a standard feed store, you’re going to get roosters unless you specify. You know all those little Easter chicks? They too are a bunch of boys.

Roosters have notoriously poor egg production (just kidding, they’re males, they don’t lay eggs at all), so if you are keeping chickens for their laying capacity, you want hens. It’s also worth mentioning that roosters are louder and more aggressive than their female counterparts. If you want to keep your neighbors happy, it’s a good idea to stick with hens. If you do want some reproduction amongst your flock, one rooster is more than enough. They’re happier with a harem of lady chickens, and when you get more than one they tend to fight.

If you do want to keep chickens in an urban environment, it’s very important that you check into your local zoning laws. Even if they are perfectly legal, it’s important to keep their living space clean and well-maintained.

" width="300" height="200" />When you’re recovering from a disaster, or you’re looking to make your yard look more natural after you’ve started setting up your bug out area, you may be looking for a way to grow grass. Many people don’t know a lot about growing grass, but it’s an important skill for you to consider and to learn. Here are some of the basics that you should consider about growing grass.

Pick your seeds. This is important to do ahead of time. Make sure that you find hearty seeds that are going to last you awhile and that you’re going to be able to use to cover up your home or whatever you may want to hide from those who are scavenging around after a disaster occurs. There are plenty of seeds for you to pick from, but some of the most common include timothy, blue, bristle, canary, switch, and more. Many of these seeds and grasses are also edible, so if you’re in need of a little more food at some point, you’re going to have some grass that you can ingest as well. Anything that has a dual purpose can play a huge role in your chances for survival.

Level out the ground and use fertilizer to help the grass to grow. The area that you put the grass on needs to be level or you could have some issues when it comes to watering it. So, take a shovel or another garden tool and flatten the ground so that it’s level. Also, make sure that the ground has fertilizer, whether you’re using something organic or you’re trying to do something else, in order to help the grass grow when you actually plant the seeds. Let it sit for a few days so that it can absorb the nutrients and be ready for you to utilize.

Plant your seeds and take care of it as you normally would otherwise. Plant your seeds and make sure that they’re ready to be used and grow. Water them and do what you can to make sure that you’ve got the most control over what’s going on with them. Feed them plant food, care for them, keep animals out of the way and just watch it grow. It’s not incredibly difficult to do, but it does take time and effort on your part in order to be able to do it.

There are a lot of things that you’re going to have to consider when it comes to growing your own grass, so you want to make sure that you’ve got the whole process handled before you absolutely have to do so. Try it out for yourself before you do a big project or before you try to recover from a disaster so that you get an idea of what you’re doing and how you’re supposed to do it. That way, you’re in a much better position to make your grass look as natural as possible after you’ve finished regrowing it.

There are a lot of things that happen during economic collapses that are of concern to those of us who are preppers. One of the main things that we have to worry about is what happens to foreclosures when the banks start to collapse. How does this work, and why is this something that we have to concern ourselves with when we’re looking at prepping. Let’s take a look.

How It Works

Basically, it depends on the condition of the home in question and how long that the bank has had it. Every property that a bank is holding onto is something that is not making them money – it’s a liability. So, as time goes on, they do what they can in order to try and dump those liabilities as quickly as possible. Rents will likely go up because fewer rental homes are even available for people to stay in, and a lot of homes will end up being completely abandoned if the economy falls hard enough. Banks will be scrambling to try and keep as much money as they can, so the more foreclosures that occur, the more panicked that they will likely end up being in the long run, and this could end up being beneficial to everyone and anyone who may still be around after disaster occurs.

Why Does This Matter?

There is actually a wide array of reasons as to why this actually matters for anything. First, because if your home goes into foreclosure at this point in time, you’re going to have a lot of trouble staying off of the grid. Obviously, if you’re bugging out in the woods, it’s not going to make as much of a difference as it would otherwise, but it still could be a huge problem that will get people on your tail over time.

Another reason that this may end up being a problem is because it will give you an idea as to how you can find other homes that may be in your area as you’re looking for somewhere to go. In an economic disaster, there are going to be a lot of places that will be totally abandoned for one reason or another, so you want to keep that in mind while this is going on as well. By having this information, you can take the legal action necessary to be able to survive and thrive in the future of the world that we will be living in.

So, as you can see, this is of the utmost concern for those of us who are prepping. There are so many different things that could happen to your home, or to the homes around yours, during an economic collapse or any other type of disaster that you want to ensure that you have an idea as to how everything works. Have you thought about how you will prep for economic disaster if and when it occurs? Or do you have other concerns that you’re looking at first?

" width="199" height="300" />One of the most important things you will need during a long-term emergency is water. A lot of people who prep regularly have bottles of water stored in their garage or basements. This can be effective, but there are other ways in which to store water on a long-term basis. Water is used for just about everything that you do so it is crucial that you have enough during a long-term crisis.

How Much Water Do You Store?

Determining how much water you need to store depends on how many people are in your family. The standard rule is that you will need a gallon of water for each person and each day. Half of which is used for hygiene and the other half is used for drinking. The hotter the climate is the more water you are going to need.

What You Should Not Use

There are proper ways in which to store your water on a long-term basis and then there are ways that have been proven to be ineffective. Here are some of the materials that should not be used when you are storing water.

Plastic (Non-food grade) – Chemicals can attach themselves to this type of plastic very easily.

Cardboard – This can become wet easily and break.

Different Storage Options

There are several different storage options when it comes to storing your water for an emergency.

Plastic can be used if it has been used on a food-grade basis. If the plastic does not contain any form of BPA or other chemicals, it is safe to use. Many people who prep do not recommend using any type of plastic for water storage because there is too much risk for chemicals. Your best bet is to buy large water storage tanks that are built to hold water. Those are the safest and keep the chemicals away from your water.

Glass is another good way to store your water. You can sterilize glass and does not have any risk of chemicals attaching to them. It can become very heavy though and does tend to break easily.

Stainless steel storage units are also a good option. It does not contain any type of chemicals and is extremely lightweight. It does not break very easily and is much lighter than glass. Make sure that the water you put in these units do not have chlorine in them because chlorine has the ability to damage stainless steel.

Summing Up

Another great way to store water is underground. A number of preppers use large underground storage units to keep their water safe from disasters. It also prevents the possibility of theft and damage to the tank. This keeps your water safe and clean for many years. Even though this method has been proven the most effective, it is also the most expensive.

Storing water for your family is the best thing that you can do for your family to prepare them all for a disaster or crisis.

" width="199" height="300" />Whether you are an experienced survival prepper or just getting started, chances are you want to ensure that you have an excellent foundation for your efforts. You know, that handful of supplies that is the most imperative your survival and well-being. Prepping is a continual effort, the longer you prep, the more you will accumulate. However, because an emergency situation can develop at any time, it’s imperative you start with the basics and have them on-hand all of the time.

Hydration

Perhaps the single most essential survival supply you can ever have on hand is water. You can’t survive more than a few days without it. In an event that causes municipal supply shortages or outages, you can find yourself in a dire situation very quickly. There are a lot of inexpensive and even free ways to prep water, and it’s something that no survival prepper should overlook.

When you’re prepping water, the most important thing to keep in mind is that it is perishable. Make sure you keep it fresh by changing it out every 6 months and/or by using a commercial water preserver.

Food Storage

Once you’ve got your water situation under control, or while you’re getting it to that point, you’re going to want to prep food as well. Focus on high-protein non-perishables. You can use standard canned goods or invest a little bit more in dehydrated long-term food storage. If you’re going to use dehydrated food, adjust your water supply accordingly.

Food should be rotated frequently for quality and chosen for nutritional factors.

Communication Devices

In the event of a widespread disaster, communications are likely going to be one of the first casualties. Your cell phone will likely be useless, and there’s a very good chance that television will be spotty if it exists at all. To keep apprised of what’s going on in the world, you’re going to want to invest in a communication device such as walkie talkies (great for keeping in touch short-range with family/friends), a CB radio or (best option) a Ham radio.

Satellite phones are also an option, but they are expensive and if satellite communications go down, utterly useless. You should also always have a battery-powered emergency radio on hand. Depending on the nature of the emergency, the EBS should be operational.

Protection

While it’s unpleasant to consider, in the event of a catastrophic disaster, you are going to have to have a means of keeping yourself and your family safe. This is particularly true if you’re a survival prepper. Not everyone’s going to think ahead, and when things go wrong they are going to target the ones who did for their own survival.

Every survival prepper should have a firearm for protection. Not only should they have one, they should be well-trained in their use and have a supply of ammo. Be ready and willing and able to use your weapon if needed. It’s also important to follow all laws when it comes to your firearms possession and usage. There’s no reason to invite trouble by violating the law.

" width="199" height="300" />There are many steps you can take to keep your family safe and sustained in an emergency situation, but prepping for your food and water needs top the list. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to prep and store enough non-perishable food for a long-term emergency. Not to mention that after a while, freeze-dried food and food from a can have a tendency to get tiresome. Gardening can be an excellent way to supplement and extend your food stores.

In the Desert

If you live in a desert ecosystem, you know that it can be far more difficult to successfully garden in your area than in more temperate, humid climates. While gardening in a desert can present some unique challenges, it is definitely doable. If you are serious about survival prepping for your family’s future, it is one of the single most effective ways to ensure food security.

There are a few things you are going to want to keep in mind when you are planning your desert garden.

Water Scarcity

It goes without saying that lack of water is the biggest issue that you’re going to face when gardening in the desert. For this reason, proper irrigation and water planning are crucial. If your property has water rights that you can capitalize on or well water, you are already ahead of the curve.

If you don’t have personal water rights and much depend upon municipal water to keep your garden hydrated, you are going to need extra water storage if you expect to maintain your garden in the event of an emergency that strips you of centralized utility access. You can achieve this through rain water collection or even through purchasing filled water tanks, which you can have delivered for a price.

Soil

Desert soil is notoriously sandy and simply not ideal for nurturing most crops. For this reason, it is highly likely that in planning your survival garden in a desert environment, you are going to need to truck in some quality top soil. You can usually purchase it by the truckload, and delivery costs are often factored into the price.

In addition to utilizing quality soil, you will want to protect its integrity by keeping it properly fertilized. You can do this with a commercially prepared garden fertilizer or by composting. If you do start composting, it’s a great way to ensure a continual supply of fertilizer for your garden, even if a disaster scenario strikes.

Shade

One other, often forgotten, necessity for gardening in a desert climate is to ensure that your plants have some source of shade to protect them from the scorching heat of the day. You can meet this need through natural (think a tree or shrubbery) or unnatural (think a fence or wall) source.

Finally, it is a good idea to choose the right crops for your ecosystem. Plants that thrive or at least do moderately well in low moisture/high heat environments. If you are growing your garden for emergency survival purposes, it needs to be something that can withstand a little stress and still produce.
