A.R. Penck

Ralf Winkler, alias A.R. Penck (born 5 October 1939) is a German painter, printmaker and sculptor.

He was born in Dresden, Germany, and studied together with a group of other neo-expressionist painters in Dresden. He became one of the foremost exponents of the new figuration alongside Jörg Immendorff, Georg Baselitz and Markus Lüpertz. Under the East German communist regime, they were watched by the secret police and were considered dissidents. In the late 1970s they were included in shows in West Berlin and were seen as exponents of free speech in the East. Their work was shown by major museums and galleries in the West throughout the 1980s. They were included in a number of important shows including the famous Zeitgeist exhibition in the well-known Martin Gropius Bau museum and the important New Art show at the Tate in 1983.

In the 1980s he became known worldwide for paintings with pictographic, neo-primitivist imagery of human figures and other totemic forms. He was included in many important shows both in London and New York.

Penck’s sculptures, though less familiar, evoke the same primitive themes as his paintings and drawings. They use common everyday materials such as wood, bottles, cardboard boxes, tin cans, masking tape, tinfoil, and wire, and are crudely painted and assembled. Despite their anti-art aesthetic and the rough-and-ready quality of their construction, they have the same symbolic, archetypal anthropomorphic forms as his flat symbolic paintings. The paintings are influenced byPaul Klee’s work and mix the flatness of Egyptian or Mayan writing with the crudity of the late black paintings byJackson Pollock. The sculptures are often reminiscent of the stone heads ofEaster Islandand other Oceanic art.

A keen drummer, he was a member of the free jazz group T.T.T. (“Triple Trip Touch”) and took every opportunity to play with some of the bestJazzmusicians of the late 1980s includingButch Morris,Frank Wright,Billy Bang,Louis MoholoandFrank Lowe, organising events at his country mansion in Heimbach in 1990 involving installations byLennie Lee, performances byAnna Homlerand paintings by Christine Kuhn

Concepts in space : The experimental art of Olafur Eliasson

Studio Olafur Eliasson is an experimental laboratory located in Berlin. Led by renowned Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, it functions as an interdisciplinary space, generating fresh dialogues between art and its surroundings.

The artist

Olafur Eliasson, born 1967 in Copenhagen, of Icelandic parentage, studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, from 1989 to 1995. Early in his career he moved to Germany, establishing Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin. Internationally acclaimed, Eliasson lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin.

GUSTAV KLIMT: 150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Biography

Gustav Klimt was born in Vienna in 1862 where he spent most of his life. He died in 1918 in the Austrian capital following a stroke. Klimt is buried in Hietzing cemetery.

1862

Born on July 14 in Baumgarten, Vienna.

1883

Founds the Künstler-Compagnie with his brother Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch.

1886

Begins work on the ceiling paintings in the stairwells of the Burgtheater with Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch (completed in 1888).

1890

Gustav Klimt, his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch complete Hans Makart’s unfinished decoration of the stairwells of the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

1891

Klimt joins the Künstlerhausgenossenschaft artists’ association.

1894

Klimt wins a commission for the faculty pictures from the University of Vienna (Philosophy, Medicine, Jurisprudence). Klimt’s pictures win a number of international prizes. Under fire in Austria, he renounces his commission in 1905.

1897

Klimt leaves the Künstlerhausgenossenschaft to become a founder member and the first president of the Vienna Secession. He remains a member of the Secession until 1905.

1898

First and second Secession exhibition featuring Klimt’s work. His picture Pallas Athene (today in the Wien Museum) draws stinging criticism.

1900

Seventh Secession exhibition: Klimt shows his first landscapes. Faculty picture Philosophy wins a gold medal at the World Expo in Paris.

1902

Klimt paints a portrait of Emilie Flöge and begins a lifelong friendship with the fashion salon owner. The portrait is on display at the Wien Museum. At the fourteenth Secession exhibition Klimt presents his Beethoven Frieze, which remains on display at the building to this day.

1904

Josef Hoffmann wins the contract to build the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. Klimt provides the design for the palace’s dining room.

1906

The picture of Fritza Riedler is the first square portrait of his Golden Phase. It is currently on display at the Belvedere.

1907

Klimt paints Adele Bloch-Bauer I, now one of the most expensive pictures in the world.

1908

Klimt presents The Kiss at the Kunstschau 1908 in Vienna. Now on display at the Belvedere, it was always destined to become the best known of all his pictures.

1911

Death and Life (on show at the Leopold Museum) wins the first prize at the International Exhibition of Art in Rome.

1918

Klimt dies on February 6 in Vienna following a stroke. He is buried in Hietzing cemetery. Otto Wagner, Kolo Moser and Egon Schiele all die in the same year.

Hell on Wheels: In Praise of Mutant Bikes

May is National Bike Month in the United States, and in towns and cities all over the country people young and old are clambering aboard their beloved machines and blithely pedaling into a brighter, cleaner, healthier tomorrow. Or losing their balance, wiping out and maiming themselves. Either way, they’re getting exercise. Happy cycling, everybody!

But back in 1948, a number of inspired amateur craftsmen — not content with riding mundane, conventional bicycles — took their enthusiasm to another, unlikely level and … well, let’s let LIFE tell it, in the words the magazine used in its December 27, 1948, issue:

“To Webster a bicycle is ‘a light vehicle having two wheels, one behind the other.’ Such a definition theoretically describes the contraptions [seen in the article], but fails to do justice to the imagination of the Chicago chapter of the National Bicycle Dealers’ Association.

“By artfully applying welders’ torches to metal tubing, the chapter’s members transform ordinary, utilitarian bicycles into traveling monstrosities. By far the most outlandish ideas have come from the Steinlauf family, who produced from their bicycle repair shop most of the oddities [shown in the article]. They are hazardous; generally at least one member of the clan is to be found in the hospital.”

LIFE magazine’s Gjon Mili, a technical prodigy and lighting innovator, visited Pablo Picasso in the South of France in 1949. The meeting of these two marvelous minds and sensibilities was bound to result in something extraordinary. Mili showed the artist some of his photographs of ice skaters with tiny lights affixed to their skates, jumping in the dark — and Picasso’s lively mind began to race.

“Picasso gave Mili 15 minutes to try one experiment,” LIFE wrote in its January 30, 1950, issue in which the images shown here first appeared. He was so fascinated by the results that he posed for five sessions.”

This series of photographs, known ever since as Picasso’s “light drawings,” were made with a small electric light in a darkened room; in effect, the images vanished as soon as they were created — and yet they still live, six decades later, in Mili’s playful, hypnotic images. Many of them were also put on display in early 1950 in a show at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Finally, while the “Picasso draws a centaur in the air” photo that leads off this gallery is rightly celebrated, many of the images in this gallery are far less well-known — but no less thrilling.
