How simple a word, yet how much it has divided our humanity.

Is it in our nature to judge a person by the color of their skin and not their character?

I submit that it is not; just observe the children, and see that they do not distinguish color or race. They just play, and accept. However; society teaches them to differentiate based on race, gender, and color, and this instruction begins at home; via their parents. How far reaching is this discrimination? How far have we taken this impulse to discriminate based on differences?

Santeria, Ifa, Candumble, Palo, Voodoo, etc., such diversiveness….

The minute we can agree that we are all children of one GOD, then we can start accepting that what separates us is not the color of our skin nor our facial features, nor our race or gender. No, the only thing that separates us is our own ignorance, and fear.

If I learned to glorify GOD standing on one foot, and you do it while standing on your head, who is to say I’m right and you are wrong?

We are both glorifying our GOD, and neither of us is wrong, it is just the way we where taught, but if you have found that your way is not working for you and upon adopting my way you are now able to connect to GOD, it does not mean that those who continue to connect with GOD the way you use to are now in the wrong, and you are in the right.

This need to make them wrong and “us” right has to stop!

There is no one right way of connecting with GOD!

The right way is the way that works for you!

I call my GOD Olodumare, you may call your GOD by a different name. Are you right, and I’m wrong?

What is the answer?

The answer is “IT DOES NOT MATTER”

GOD, by whichever name you call upon him or her is still GOD, and your prayers will be fulfilled one way or the other.

I pray that you stop judging people by the color of their skin, race , accent, or gender. Get to know the person and let their actions judge the person’s character.

Others equate Odú with the verses associated with each symbol that form part of the body of the Ifa divinatory corpus. While both elements reveal a small part of Odú, the greater mystery lies far below the surface.

The Odú are the sacred symbols that hold the ase (power/life force) of everything in existence. They are holistic maps that chart the dynamic movement of energy and identify the most primal forces of the natural world. The Odú are transcendental mandalas that mark the active and inactive energies of a given situation with startling accuracy.

All that was, is, or ever will be, is born through Odú, including the Orisa and their sacred ase. The varied manifestations of Heaven and Earth are born through Odú and it is through these same sacred pathways that they will be returned to the primordial void. Odú govern the cycles of nature and the sands of time. They are the cosmic energies of creation—the very fabric of life itself! Like brilliant points of light positioned around the circumference of the Universe, Odú are the stars from whose holy emanation worlds are born. They are the blood and bones of our natural and supernatural existence.

Odú is the oracular utterance of the spirits, the divine wisdom of all those who have come before and those who have yet to be born. Uninhibited by space and time, Odú is the original language of the Ancestors and Orisa. They are the pure voice of divinity that expresses itself in absolute binary perfection. Odú hold the answers to all of life’s questions and collectively they become the eternal compass that directs and redirects one on their journey. The Odú issue words of blessings, but also carry admonitions and warnings. They reveal the forces obscured from view and translate the kinetic patterns of spirit into tangible rhythms of communication. Serving as the nexus for all of creation, Odú are universal points of physical and metaphysical ingress and egress. These sacred forces are the umbilical cords that nourish and sustain all multidimensional activity and movement.

The Odú are living, sentient entities engaged in potent and constant interaction with their creations. They are interconnected repositories of vast spiritual force, embodying the infinite dance of creation and destruction. The masculine and feminine, light and dark, yin and yang – such is the nature of Odú. The physical signs that represent Odú are the symbolic skeleton keys to an ancient universe, a world that is the womb from which all life ensued. It is through these gateways that invocations echo into the heart of the universe and are answered by the spirits. They are akin to spiritual antennae, able to transmit energies that manipulate and modulate reality on micro – and macrocosmic levels. They are remarkably precise frequencies of energy that invigorate and also negate those things that fall under their auspices.

Odú govern the birth of a newborn and the death of an Elder, the tides that rush in and the riverbed that runs dry. The light rain that brings refreshment and the hurricane that carries destruction; the flame that illuminates and the explosion that critically burns are found within Odús grand scope. Odú’s face wears the smile of joy and utters the cry of anguish. The sun at its zenith during midday and the moon that softly illuminates the evening landscape are the children of Odú. The charismatic forces of attraction and repulsion are given license through Odú. Spirit’s descent into matter and its eventual transfiguration and ascension walk the road mapped by Odú. All ailments and their cures are discovered through these holy beings. Odú rule the moment of fertilization, the critical period of gestation, the act of birth and the inevitable call of death. Odú marks the cells within our bodies and the space between these cells and the space between the spaces. Odú are the fiery manifestations of light from the Void and the suffocating magnetic pull of the Black Hole. Odú are sacred constellations, satellites of immortal wisdom that impact the cosmic machination of the universe and the minute steps of the individual. Odú gives birth to the day as surely as it does the night.

In a more microcosmic sense, the Odú give rise to success and bring about failure. The ability to move ahead or the impossibility of manifestation is rooted in Odú. Relationships are formed and dissolved through these energies. They hold the frequency for ultimate connectivity or total disconnection. Steadfastness and instability, clarity and confusion are juxtaposed through Odú. The complex model of one’s being can be clearly charted through these sacred energies. Life’s initiatory rites, both personal and communal, are given strength through their ties with these forces. That which is buried deep within the past or waiting patiently in the future can be understood through exploration of their relative Odú. The circumstances of the present gain clarity when examining the Odú that governs their form and function. Balance is both lost and regained through a direct and often complicated relationship with Odú.

Both are a part of life. However, I subscribe to a greater level of free will than many Babalawos. In my opinion, very little is absolutely “set” in our lives, in the sense of being “fated” and immutable.

I think the rock-bottom basics include such things as the physical laws of our universe (e.g., gravity, the necessity of breathing, eating and sleeping), but even these have been transcended, at certain times by some individuals. I prefer to operate under the assumption that I am not positive about what, if anything, is fated. This always gives me the option of change and improved circumstances.

I do feel that very few precise events in life are “fated” in the sense of being foreordained when we came into life. However, there is a certain amount of interaction in life. If I come into (for learning purposes) a body with a predisposition toward high cholesterol and proceed to eat, drink and be merry with high- sugar, high-fat foods while getting very little exercise, I am setting myself up for an eventual heart attack. There will come a time when that result is, essentially, “inevitable” or “fated.” But it is my action and attitudes which have created that. Had I chosen to act differently, I would have a different “fate.”

The analogy I like best is that we are all afloat on the River of Life. Some of us are in rowboats. Some of us are in motorboats. Some of us are hanging on to a log, while others are floundering in the open River, swimming as best we can. Down the River is a waterfall. Those of us who have learned to swim or who have a boat and have learned to steer, have an excellent chance of going over that waterfall in an easy fashion — or even choosing to steer against the current for a time and bypass that waterfall by taking another byway on the River. Those of us clutching a log or adrift in the current are much more at the mercy of whatever comes down the River, whatever swift eddies carry us along.

I believe we are “fated” to face certain issues in each life by virtue of who we are. Our attitudes and actions create our karma and determine our fate. If we are of a quarrelsome nature, we will continue to get involved in fights and arguments until we change our nature. If we are excessively sweet and nice, we will continue to attract others who use and abuse our power against us, until we change our nature.

I do not believe the details are fated. I do not believe anyone must marry an alcoholic, lose a job, be chronically ill. I do believe that we attract events and situations that give us opportunities to become more of what we are capable of becoming. And, if we are stuck in a negative pattern (floundering in the River), we are likely to continue our same unhelpful reactions because they are familiar. But change is always an option.

And karma is immediate. As soon as we change our actions and attitudes, we change our karma. Because we are different, we begin attracting different circumstances for learning.

What Ifá offers us is a map of the basic psychological issues and principles we are facing and trying to balance. It does not reveal “fated” details which “must” happen. Any principle can have a whole range of possible details. But, if we understand the basic principle being dealt with, we can choose to operate with the more fulfilling (less frustrating) details available.

This refers to burying a basic part of who we are, a fundamental drive, within the unconscious. Once it is buried, we forget we buried it and have no conscious awareness of that part of our nature. A common outcome is physical illness.

If we block a basic drive in our psyche, it can hit the physical body as illness serves unconscious needs. For example, the individual who is extremely strong, competent and capable may have a hard time facing her vulnerable, dependent, childlike side. If she represses her need to sometimes lean on other people, physical illness can become her only route to being taken care of. This is not the most comfortable way of getting closeness needs met, but no one ever accused the unconscious of being perfect — only of striving to fit in the missing parts.

Another flight from wholeness is what psychologists call projection. In such cases, the mirror principle of life operates. We draw into our lives people who will manifest for us the missing pieces (the parts of our own nature which we are not facing). The major problem in such cases is that these other people whom we unconsciously attract tend to overdo whatever qualities we are under-doing in our lives. So, if we are strongly identified with a need to be free and achieving in the world, we may be denying our needs for emotional attachment. In such cases, we are likely to attract other people who are too dependent, too emotional, too possessive, too clinging, who seem to want to tie us down and hem us in. Our need to be needed and to be strong and responsible can keep on attracting victims, or weaker people who want to be taken care of. We get the closeness, but at what price?

The opposite side, of course, is the person totally identified with the desire for love, relationships, warmth and an emotional commitment. Such a person may be denying her needs for freedom, space and independence. She may unconsciously attract “free soul” types as lovers, people unwilling to settle down and be faithful. Or, she falls in love with married men (not really available, so she still has her freedom). Or, the only attractive people she knows live one thousand miles away (again, unconsciously retaining space and independence). There are lots of variations.

When projection is going on, the client need only realize that the other party is mirroring the client’s own potential, in an exaggerated form. Once the client can integrate that quality, in a moderate fashion, balance is achieved and s/he no longer needs that external example. Of course, this is much easier said than done!

The attribute being mirrored is not negative; the other party is simply carrying it to an extreme. It is the task of the client to discover a fulfilling way of expressing that basic part of her nature, in moderation, in balance with her other needs.

It is also important to remember that projection is a two-way street. If one party is unconsciously denying one end of the polarity, the other party is probably unconsciously denying its opposite. If one projects freedom needs, the other projects closeness needs. It becomes a natural match; each finds someone to express what s/he will not allow him/herself to manifest! Both are teaching one another and both are learning. Neither one is “making” the other do anything. They are attracted to one another because they both have something to give and receive in the relationship.

Another concept borrowed from psychology is displacement. This simply refers to expressing a perfectly natural and positive drive at an inappropriate time or place. For example, there are times in life when being direct, honest, forthright and assertive is the only way to get what you want. There are other times when more tact, diplomacy or subtlety is called for. If we insist on being ruthlessly, bluntly, totally honest at all times, in all situations, we will create great pain for ourselves and others. However, if we always tell little white lies, avoid saying what we really mean, hint around rather than express our preferences, we will also create great pain for ourselves and others. Balance calls for some of each — depending on the circumstances.

Human beings, by their nature, experience conflict. That is, none of us (on this plane of existence) is so highly evolved as to have our whole act together. We are all learning and growing. And the path of growth includes making peace between the various warring factions that often exist within our psyches.

Ambivalence is very common and a very normal human reaction. We want something, but we don’t. The challenge of our spiral of evolution is to find a synthesis, a middle position between our various drives and needs, to make room for all our potentials that is, of course, a very long-term process. However; I believe we have more than one lifetime in which to complete it.

People set themselves up for problems by trying to ignore a part of their basic nature, by only expressing one side of their potential. Where Ifá is helpful is in pointing out the issues to the client. Part of Ifá is the art of self- acceptance. Ifá views all the sides of life as potentially positive. Nothing needs to be “cut out” or rejected. Life is a quest for wholeness. When clients have discomfort or problems, examining the issues involved can help the clients to be more accepting toward their own natures. Sometimes, just allowing a denied side some small expression in their lives is enough to fix everything. Sometimes more effort and changes are necessary.

It is inspiring to see a client make an absolute turnabout in life — simply by accepting a part of who s/he is. Realizing that none of these needs are “bad” gives everyone permission to find the most satisfying paths to meeting their various desires. For many people, having me confirm that certain parts of life are naturally contradictory, that ambivalence and feeling some inner conflict is normal, is a tremendous relief!

When Charles Darwin and the crew of the H.M.S. Beagle anchored off the shore of Patagonia, they discovered the natives living there literally could not see the ship. Though the Beagle was only a quarter of a mile offshore, the natives could not imagine such a large vessel. Though they could perceive the smaller boats in which the crew rowed to shore, for the natives — the Beagle did not exist!’

For many years, people were convinced that running a mile in four minutes was “impossible.” After Roger Bannister broke the barrier, many more people followed course. Despite the old cliche that “Seeing is believing,” it often seems more the case that people “see what they believe” rather than “believing what they see” (and similarly for what we “hear” and “feel”).
