I have already registered the Maxis Broadband RM78 plan (3 GB modem included) for couple of month now. As far as I can say, this plan is good for non-heavy user to just checking their email, browsing web etc. It’s also best solution for those who travelling a lot.

Those who often to watch videos on YouTube and other streaming sites, I advised you should avoid this plan. It’s impossible for you to use 3 GB in a month. Majority of Maxis Broadband users who opt for this limited data transfer plans usually end up exceeding their bandwidth caps.

Most Wireless Broadband in Malaysia has some limit on the amount of bandwidth you can enjoy a month before they start throttling your line. So, don’t get cheated to Maxis Broadband salesman! =D

Here are few tips which will helping you to save your bandwidth while using Maxis Broadband.

1) Disable the function to load images and sound

2) Turn On Pop-Up Blocker

3) Turn off the automatic update settings in Windows.

4) Disable all software that downloads the updates automatically like Antivirus, Windows Media Player, RealOne Player etc.

5) Install free firewall to control over what programs on your computer gain access to the Internet

6) Play youtube video on specific time frame

7) Get a software to monitors your bandwidth usage

Creating manually Maxis Broadband connection

1) Click Start -> Programs -> Communications
2) Click on New Connection Wizard (The New Connection Wizard will show up on the screen)
3) Click Next
4) Select “Connect to the Internet“
5) Click Next
6) Select “Set up my connection manually“
7) Click Next
8 ) Select “Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password“
9) Click Next
10) Define the name of your ISP. eg MAXISBB
11) Click Next
12) Enter Phone Number: *99#
13) Click Next
14) Enter Username and Password

Username: maxis
Password: wap

15) Click Next
16) Select “Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop“
16) Click Finish

Last week something happened, Ilmu IT was featured on KOSMO !

Feedreader - Fixing library gds32.dll not found

When I tried to start Feedreader, I got error:

“Application cannot start (16). Library gds32.dll not found”.

If you came across this problem, what you have to do is go to http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=files&id=engine_212 and download file Firebird-2.1.2.18118-0_Win32_embed.zip from there. Unzip this file to the Feedreader folder. Make sure you delete fbclient.dll and rename fbembeded.dll to fbclient.dll.

Adsense with Google Sites

Google is now offering Adsense with Google Sites. Google Sites is part of the Google Apps where anyone can create a group site, family site or company intranet. If you are already using Google Sites, now the application have an option to place Adsense code on your site.

To add Adsense to your site:
1) Login Google Sites
2) Choose your site
3) Click the More actions drop-down menu, and select Manage site.
2) On the left side, clik Monetize
3) Click the Monetize this site button.
4) Create a new AdSense account or use your existing AdSense account.
5) Follow the instructions.

You have the option to place ads into sidebar or page content; change ads format; change color etc.

Google introduced Adsense for Video

Google has launched a beta version of their Adsense service for video. Web publishers that participate in Google’s AdSense ad network will now be able to make money by offering ad-supported video clips from Youtube site.

This service won’t be available to everyone yet. Your site must havean English-language content, serve at least one million video stream per month, and based in the U.S.

Switch users without logging off in XP

There is a way to change users from the command prompt without logging off Windows.

1) Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to launch Task Manager and look for a process in the list called explorer.exe.Click the End Process button.

2) Next, click on the file menu and choose New Task (Run…)

3) Enter “cmd” and hit enter to open the Command Prompt window

4) Inside the Command Prompt, use following syntax:

runas /user:username “explorer”

For example to switch to “Administrator” account, use the following command:

runas /user:Administrator “explorer”

How to cancel PayPal Automatic Payment

Paypal recurring payments allow seller to automatically renew the subscription payment on the expiry date. In other words, if you bought the subscription using Paypal, your subscription will be automatically renewed and your debit/credit card will be charged at the time the billing cycle is triggered. This process continues until you cancel the service.

To stop recurring billing charges:

1) Login to your Paypal Account.

2) Click “History” subtab

3) Show only “Subscription” and click Details to view your subscription details.

4) At the bottom of the page, Click “Cancel Subscription”.

5) On the next page, you will be asked to confirm the cancellation. Click the “Cancel Subscription” again to complete the cancellation.

6) You are done!

Port 25 blocked by TMnet

TMnet has recently blocking user’s outgoint port 25/tcp traffic. They has limit port 25 access in order to cut down on spam sent through their servers.

This prevents users from sending email using non-streamyx or non-tmnet SMTP servers eg. mail.company.com.my, only smtp.streamyx.com and smtp.tm.net.my will be allowed. Means if you operate or have your own mail server, you must configure your mail server so that it is an open relay.
