So what is a Bakunawa by the way?

The Bakunawa, also spelled Bakonawa, Baconaua, or Bakonaua, is a dragon in Philippine mythology that is often represented as a gigantic sea serpent. It is believe to be the sun and moon eater. in Panay Folk Stories, it is believe to be man eater as well.

Tales about the Bakunawa say that it is the cause of eclipses. During ancient times, Filipinos believe that there are seven moons created by Bathala to light up the sky. The Bakunawa, amazed by their beauty, would rise from the ocean and swallow the moons whole, angering Bathala and causing them to be mortal enemies.

To keep the Bakunawa moons from completely being swallowed, ancient Filipinos would go out of their homes with pans and pots, and would make noise in order to scare the Bakunawa into spitting out the moon back into the sky. Some of the people in the villages would play soothing sounds with their musical instruments, in hopes that the dragon would fall into a deep sleep. Thus, the brave men of the village hoped that while the dragon was hypnotized by the musical sounds they could somehow slay the dragon. Although the dragon was known as a "moon eater" it was also known as a "man eater".

Other tales tell that the Bakunawa has a sister in the form of a sea turtle. The sea turtle would visit a certain island in the Philippines in order to lay its eggs. However, locals soon discovered that every time the sea turtle went to shore, the water seemed to follow her, thus reducing the island's size. Worried that their island would eventually disappear, the locals killed the sea turtle.

When the Bakunawa found out about this, it arose from the sea and ate the moon. The people were afraid so they prayed to Bathala to punish the creature. Bathala refused but instead told them to bang some pots and pans in order to disturb the serpent. The moon is then regurgitated while the Bakunawa disappeared, never to be seen again.

The island where the sea turtle lays its eggs is said to exist today. Some sources say that the island might just be one of the Turtle Islands.

Others tell how the Bakunawa fell in love with a human girl in one of the native tribes. The head of the tribe finding about their affair had their house burned to ashes, the Bakunawa finding out about this became immerse in anger and tried to take revenge by eating all the 12 moons. when the Bakunawa was about to eat the last one, Bathala took action and punished the Bakunawa by banishing it from its home away from the sea. It also tells that the reason of the eclipses is how the Bakunawa is trying to come back to its home and deceased family.

image: https://www.facebook.com/GarryPalomoPhotography

Dinagyang Festival | AliwanFiesta 2013 Grand Champion (Photos)

Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City represented by TRIBU PANAYANON of ILOILO CITY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL still reigns Grand Champion at Aliwan Fiesta 2013.

Congratulations Tribu Panayanon! The results of the opening salvo contest, however, will not affect the overall standing of the tribes during the final competition on January 27.

The tribes will follow the carousel type parade in four performance areas which will give organizers the chance to gauge the performance time of each contingent.

Dagoy Dancing Hala Bira ILOILO - Dinagyang Festival Opening Salvo

Tribu Ilonganon

Tribu Panayanon

Tribu Salognon

Dinagyang Festival 2013 Opening Salvo

The excitement of Dinagyang Festival 2013 can already be felt around the city with the opening salvo held yesterday (Jan 18).

Dinagyang, the highlights of which will start on January 25, opened with DepEd's Tambor Trumpa Martsa Musika, a drum and bugle parade from the Capitol to the Freedom Grandstand, followed in the afternoon by a fluvial procession along the river segment from Fort San Pedro, disembarking in front of the Aduana, and then the land route passing the river bank along Muelle Loney to the Arroyo Fountain and back to San Jose Church.

On Saturday (January 26), the Kasadyahan Regional Cultural Competition takes the morning schedule and the Sponsors Mardi Gras follows after lunch. The Dinagyang Ati Contest starts right after the Sunday morning mass.

The Dinagyang Dance Showdown and Street Dancing Competition (Ati Grand Parade and Competition) is one of the main events of the Dinagyang. It is a competition among "tribes" with warriors donned in striking attires that reflect the ingenuity, craftsmanship and artistry of Ilonggos, dancing in impressive choreography.

There will be eleven Ati contingents in this year's Dinagyang on January 27. These are Tribus Angola, Aninipay, Atub-Atub, Buntatalan-on, Ilonganon, Milagrosa, Miro (Guest), Molave, Pag-asa, Panayanon and Salognon.

Meanwhile, participants in the Kasadyahan Festival Regional Cultural Competition are: Salakayan -of Miagao town in Iloilo; Hubon Saranggola sa Manggahan (Guimaras); Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan sa Guimaras; Tribu Hugyaw (St. Therese MTC Colleges); Olalong (Cabalum Western College); Tribu Pagdayaw (Dumarao, Capiz); Tribu Kaing (Leon, Iloilo); Hugyaw Kansilay (Silay City, Negros Occidental); Tribu Saludan (Tigbauan, Iloilo), Tribu Bayluhay (San Joaquin, Iloilo); Pahinis de Laua-an (Laua-an, Antique); and Tribu Mandaragat (San Jose de Buenavista, Antique).

This year's parade route is reverted to carousel around the City Proper Circuit Eight with four judging areas: Freedom Grandstand, Capitol, Quezon-Ledesma, and Iznart-Ma. Clara.

The festival management looks at carousel as the better option at the moment as it allows other events to be presented at the sports oval and parade crowd control becomes more manageable when concentrated in the City Proper.

Other activities of Dinagyang will be the Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament to be held at the Iloilo Golf and Country Club in Sta. Barbara town from January 19 and 20; the 1st Iloilo Travel Mart from January 19 to 25; Miss Dinagyang pageant finals at the University of San Agustin Gym on January 23; and the arrival of the image of Sto. Niño de Cebu at the Iloilo Arrastre.

The fireworks show, Luces in the Sky, will be on January 24 and 25; the food festival by the Iloilo Hotels Restaurants Resorts Association from January 24 to 27; the Religious Sadsad is in front of the San Jose Church on January 25; awarding night on January 27; and the thanksgiving mass on January 28.

Source: May Joven philstar.com
Iloilo Dinagyang Festival 2013 Launched

The Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) has officially launched yesterday the 45th Dinagyang festival set on January 26-27 next year.

The launching started after a mass held at San Jose Parish Church (SJPC). It was followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the IDFI represented by President Ramon Cua Locsin, the Iloilo City Government through the City Tourism Office, and SJPC led by Parish Priest Raymundo Edzel Alcayaga at the rooftop of the Iloilo City Hall building.

Iloilo City Tourism Officer Benito Jimena said this early launching will help interested participants to prepare early.

He said Iloilo Dinagyang has been known as the Best Tourism Event in the country and this will remain as the Ilonggos' pride.

"We have done a lot to make Iloilo Dinagyang as a premier festival so we have to think of some useful strategies to have a better preparation in order to invite more visitors to come to Iloilo," he said.

The foundation also eyes the adoption of the same set-up last year where the final performance area was the Iloilo Sports Complex in La Paz district, instead of the Freedom Grandstand.

Jimena said the sports complex, which is more accessible to everybody, could cater to more than 25,000 people compared to the Freedom Grandstand that can accommodate almost 5,000 people.

He added that the sports complex is just a few meters away from the judging areas at St. Clement's Church and the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.

Jimena added that common activities like food festival and live bands in the downtown area will be retained.

Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor, Sr. said the use of the complex is okay as long as there will be no damages in the area.

The Iloilo Provincial Government gave a cash aid of P 200,000 to the foundation aside from allowing the use of the complex last year.

The complex served as Judging Area No. 1 while the other judging areas were located at the front of St. Clements Church on Luna Street, La Paz (area 2), old Capitol building (area 3) and Freedom grandstand (area 4).*

source: http://iloilonewstoday.com/index.php/opinion/other-views/10964-iloilo-dinagyang-2013-launched-

2013 Dinagyang Festival launching set on Sept 24

Beating of drums will soon fill the air here as the city government and its partner organizations, the Iloilo Dinagyang Festival Inc.
