I was born in small town Ontario in a community called Oxford just outside of Ottawa and I was raised in and around Toronto - both in the city and in a town called Sutton, Ontario. I currently live downtown in a condo with an amazing roommate and a fabulous sassy cat.

First job ever?
My first job (other than baby sitting) was working at a drug store called Ben's Pharmacy in Sutton...I guess my love of beauty product's started then as it's like working in Shopper's Drug Mart - you spend all day stocking make-up, fashion magazines etc.

First “real” job?
My first real job was as a news writer for City TV/Breakfast Television in Toronto.

So what do you do?
I am the Fashion & Trend Producer for Entertainment Tonight Canada. I talk to celebrities and their stylists about fashion, diet & beauty routines and translate their secrets for everyday use. In my spare moments I'm trying to save the world - the environment, animals and people. I am a firm believer in the ethical treatment of our planet (plants and animals - those that can't defend themselves).

Take us along the path (personal & professional) that took you where you are today.
I grew up with two incredibly smart and disciplined parents who came together when I was 5ish (like so many families today my mom was a single mom for my early years). One of the ways I spent time with my Step-dad (and increased my sticker collection...yes, I was bribed) was through reading and then writing book reports. It was in those moments (when my step-dad and I would bond over my analysis of books) that I developed a thirst for knowledge and analysis. By age eight, I had my own subscription to National Geographic Magazine (thanks to my generous Grandparents), which I still receive today. Shortly thereafter, I was conducting interviews of my family via tape recorder and I was set on saving tigers and reporting on indigenous cultures. In my teen years I had a newspaper column for two years, which chronicled life at high school. I took Western's 'media and culture' undergraduate program and eventually completed my Master's in Journalism. From there I landed jobs at CityTV as a writer; I produced for Slice lifestyle shows and I now work for Entertainment Tonight Canada.

The Fashion side came trickling in at the age of 20 when I joined Sutherlands in front of the camera. Eventually, I coupled these experiences of working with stylists and directors/photographers into my own laws of fashion, which I use today to help guide viewers.

To date, I've chatted with Oscar de La Renta, Kenneth Cole, Barbara Walters, Nicole Richie, Nicky Hilton, Ramona Keveza, Coco Rocha, Adriana Lima, Jennifer Connelly, Kat Dennings, Catherine O'Hara, Keanu Reeves, Adrian Grenier, Camilla Alves, Colin Firth...the list goes on. They've spilled their fashion must-haves, diet dilemmas, style secrets and industry qualms.

What’s the toughest thing you’ve been faced with thus far?
Sometimes it hard to be seen as something other than the surface 'you'...when there is so much more you have to say or want to do, it can be a brutal industry.

What did your parents want you to be?
Happy.
But my Grandpa - a Lawyer.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given?
When it comes to work: "Don't let the bastards get you down" - A Producer at CityTV told me that during my first few months there. And I've repeated it to myself many times.
'Don't let others control your emotions' is another helpful one...from my mom...my muse.

What advice do you have for women who want to follow in your footsteps?
Listen to Oprah. (haha)
Kidding.
Sort of.
There are times when I have wanted to quit. I didn't take time off between my undergrad and my Master's and I felt like I was burning out. There's been time throughout my career where I had that same feeling. There is no time off from journalism - the days and nights roll in to one and you have to keep up. But this is a job - like all others - and 'life' is what happens when you walk out of the doors after work. It's important to have perspective on that or you lose yourself. I've seen it happen. Also (and many of us know this) being a woman and going after your own goals, in your own way, isn't easy. I've made many questionable decisions and mistakes and people will invariably talk and whisper - but those who have the time to do that simply find you way more interesting than themselves. If you follow the advice I was given (number 14) and you keep your head up and plaster on a smile - it is one fricken fun ride ladies! There's always someone out there eager to knock you down, drag you off your road and toss you into the ditch (metaphorically). But if you can get up, brush off the dust, re-adjust your sexy heels and get right back on your path...that's empowerment. Nothing is more liberating than that feeling of reclaiming yourself after you've hit rock bottom. You will get over it...and in media, there is a lot to get over.

Is it possible for a woman to successfully balance both love and career? Why or why not?
I've re-read this question for a while now and I think it's more like "can anyone balance love and career"? Listen, I love debates so I am going to throw this one out there: I believe that you need to give 100% to something to fully commit and be at the top of your game (that is why people who dabble in relationships ultimately fail - they're giving 40 percent here, 20 percent there etc and ultimately feel dissatisfied with everyone) so you need to be able to give 100% to a relationship, 100% to a career and 100% to family. If you can effectively do that without compromising any one component - amazing! But most people I've encountered while giving 100% to work, give 75% to a relationship (for example) or while giving 100% to their relationship compromise their career. A select few can find a way to successfully give all areas of their life everything that is needed.

What’s next for you?
I'd love to tie in my passions (WWF, Peta, World Vision, Humane Society, Cancer Research etc) and have a regular 'Save the World Sexy Styles' component to the show or my life.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years... 10 years?
Geez - can I say married and working on my PhD? Hopefully I've talked to Oprah, Bradley Cooper and Julia Roberts by then...
And 10 years...2-3 kids, a house and lots of incredible shoes (on them and me).

And lastly, in your opinion, What do Women Want??
I think every woman secretly wants to feel a bit of glamour...not in the red carpet blow-out way, but just desired, loved and sexy. Whether it's by her partner, her children or by herself. We're trained as little girls to appreciate and reward the culture of celebrity and all our lives we chase the vibrant flashbulb. If we can learn to inject that feeling of va-va-voom into ourselves, everyday, Women will Want little else.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Odeen inside her luxurious penthouse suite over looking the city for our one on one. I took the time to get to know her and dive deep inside her thoughts. Odeen is a successful real estate agent who has created a solid career in such a short amount of time. At 25 years young, she knows exactly what she wants in life and is striving towards her goals with tunnel vision. I am an entrepreneur. I’ve been acting since I was a child, then evolved into a Realtor and a writer.

Take us along the path (personal & professional) that took you where you are today.

Well my father was a Realtor and I used to help him out a bit when I was younger, which enabled me to learn about the industry. Growing up, I never really thought that I would ever delve into it myself, but when I was in my last semester at UofT, I thought to myself…hmm..after attaining this degree, what am I going to do to make a solid income? I already had a lot on my plate; I was in school, going to auditions and acting in commercials and stuff- but I still couldn’t decide on what I really wanted to do with my degree. So I created another option for myself. I decided that I would get my real estate license concurrently during that final semester of university. It took me a little more than 10 months to complete and after the high of selling my first couple of properties, I became really passionate about finding people the perfect home! My parents own multiple properties and have always educated me on investing, and again- my dad was a Realtor so realistically, I grew up in this business. In a sense- I guess it was just meant to be. I love being in charge of my own business and being my own boss. I love the fact that being a Realtor allows me to have more control over my life; because with acting I found myself feeling very out of control as my fate is always in the hands of casting directors. That being said, being a Realtor allows me the scheduling flexibility to pursue my other endeavours, so I’m able to continue to act when opportunities come along as well as write- which is something I’m also passionate about. I like having multiple avenues of income. It keeps things really interesting (and really busy) in my life.

In terms of my writing career, I was one of the editors of my school newspaper and I write freelance for a few print and online publications. I’ve made a few appearances in Sway Magazine, you should check it out! I have also started my first novel which will be coming out in 2011.

I’ve always been surrounded by people who have inspired me, whether it was the men that I’ve dated or family and friends. They have all played integral roles in encouraging and inspiring me. I also come from a huge family who have high expectations of me.

What’s the toughest thing you’ve been faced with thus far?
Ageism and sexism.
At first I fibbed to people about my age because when I first got my license I was 22, so sometimes I would infer that I was a tad older in an effort to combat the possibility of age discrimination.

What did your parents want you to be?
Happy.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given?
Just keep swimming.

What advice do you have for women who want to follow in your footsteps?
To have tunnel vision and to have a plan. Always have a very detailed plan and write down every single step it takes to get to the end result and stay on course because you’re in the driver’s seat.

Also I think it’s so important to study the habits of people who are extremely successful. Try to incorporate their positive habits into your own course of action and you should have a similar outcome.

Is it possible for a woman to balance both love and career successfully?
Yes. Only if your partner inspires you and encourages you.

What’s next for you?
I am most excited about my book. I’m going to take the self publishing route. I received 2 offers but the bottom-line wasn’t a figure that excited me enough, so I’m using my own capital to publish this book (and in the future other writers’ books) myself.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years... 10 years?
I want to continue to help guide people towards realizing their property ownership and real estate goals and eventually start my own brokerage. I see myself as a best-selling author and hopefully by then I will be married with at least two kids.

To be loved.

I stopped by Chapters and picked this one up last week after I had seen its review in an article in the Toronto Sun. Career Post: Maybe It's Time For Plan C

RONA ECONOMOU was a lawyer at a large Manhattan law firm, making a comfortable salary and enjoying nights on the town when she was laid off in 2009, another victim of the recession. At first, she cried. “Then it hit me,” said Ms. Economou, now 33. “This is my one chance” to pursue a dream.

We spoke about pursuing a dream career last month in a post called, "Ditching Your Real Job for Your Dream Job", and we had such a great response that I thought I'd bring up the topic once again. I found a great article in the New York Times called 'Maybe It's Time For Plan C" and it inspired me to greater heights about my own passions, so I wanted to deposit that same positive energy into your lives aswell.

We all know that with no risk comes no reward. Taking this leap of faith is a horrifying experience at first, but (in some cases) is followed by a beautiful realization that you are meant to be doing what you love. Think of how many people are sitting in cubicles and completely miserable right now! (maybe you are one of them and reading this blog post) Life is too short. Nothing is promised. So why not take the valuable time that you do have and make the best of it! I say this, believing entirely that if you write down a plan and execute it - good things will come to you. It's all about hard work and dedication - igniting that passion for your dream and pursuing it with all confidence that it will become reality.

The lures are obvious: freedom, fulfillment. The highs can be high. But career switchers have found that going solo comes with its own pitfalls: a steep learning curve, no security, physical exhaustion and emotional meltdowns. The dream job is a “job” as much as it is a “dream.”

For some, this decision flourishes into something great! but for others, not so much.

Last year, Jennifer Phelan, 27, left a marketing job at a large law firm to become a private Pilates instructor in Boston. She had envisioned a life of “workouts, getting lots of sleep and blogging every day about health and fitness,” she said. Instead, her classes start as early as 6 a.m. and she feels wiped out by day’s end, which can be 14 hours later. “I preach to my students to make time for themselves, to treat their bodies as vital instruments,” Ms. Phelan said. “Now, I’m lucky if I get that in a few times a month.”

There are many pros and cons to ditching your corporate career for a dream, we see this play out in the example above. However, it doesn't have to discourage you from taking a risk. Of course sacrifices will be made, you may work longer hours, etc. However, on the plus side - you will be happy. And ultimately, that is what's important. When you're happy, you are productive and you do what you need to do to keep that dream alive. This article was an eye opener and helped me understand that a dream job may not be a reality for some (right away).

Sometimes it means going back to the drawing board and preparing yourself for a plan C. Yes! a plan C - hopefully, with proper planning you won't need it - a second job on the side to cover those unexpected pitfalls or sadly, returning to your old job (temporarily). No matter what, the point here is to never give up. Do what you have to do, in order to do what you want to do! When I took the time to read about the individuals who had highs and lows, I said to myself, "No matter what the circumstance, everyone has the power to turn things around and live their best life."

.. and whether you are currently working on plan A, B or C - don't get discouraged. Keep your head up, invest in yourself, plan well then execute- it will all pay off in the end.

To Build Your Confidence…
1. Go to a movie alone.
2. Live alone, or at least move apartments in NYC without the help of family.
3. Train for (and finish) a huge physical test like a half-marathon.
4. Quit your job. It feels so good to take a job and shove it (and not be affecting anyone else's livelihood).
5. Fly to a foreign country by yourself. I was nervous on my first solo trip to Europe, even though I almost always have to travel alone.
6. Learn to stand up for yourself. (If you're not naturally assertive, may I recommend moving to New York City? It did wonders for me.)

7. Be a good wingwoman. It's not always about you.
8. Chill with your widowed and single grandma. She knows "alone"!
9. Volunteer.

To Make You Appreciate the Next Guy…
10. Do at least one Valentine's Day alone.
11. Date the creeps. You'll really value the nice guys afterward.

To Make You Feel Sexy and Attractive…
12. Buy yourself some flowers.
13. Invest in a LBD (little black dress) and some sexy stilettos.
14. Sit at a bar by yourself and drink a martini. Cool.
15. Buy something frivolous and expensive that you LOVE wearing.

To Make Yourself a Better Partner in the Future…
16. Make a list of all your faults.
17. Learn to cook well. I'm still working on this.
18. Get some hobbies. Something's gotta keep you occupied—plus it'll make you seem interesting.
19. Let your married friends edit your online dating profile. My dear friend Cheryl has caught a few doozies.
20. Get your finances in order.

To Appreciate Being Single…
21. Babysit someone's baby for an hour.
22. Help a friend through her divorce or a bad break-up.
23. Host a girls-only night. I think some coupled-up women forget how much we need each other.

I've wanted to meet Priya ever since I can remember! so when the opportunity came up to interview her for our feature, I hopped on it asap (lol). It was a pleasure to sit down with another writer and get inside her thoughts to find out what inspires her. So what do you do?
For the last 6 years I’ve been running my own magazine. I am the editor-in-chief and co-founder and co-publisher of Urbanology Magazine. Editor-in-chief means to oversee the whole publication, online and print in terms of editorial content. Deciding what we cover, assigning interviews to writers, editing articles and following through. On the business end of it, I do everything from selling advertisements and subscriptions to managing the database and completing administrative tasks. We have people who work on those things, but since it’s a company that I co-founded I still have my hand in everything.

I also run a youth journalism program called, “Say Word”. It operates out of Scarborough. Basically, it was funded by the Youth Challenge Fund to help instil journalism into the youth living in the 7 priority neighbourhoods of Scarborough. One of them being Malvern, in which where I am from. I teach them things that I learned myself, from magazine to radio, etc. The program is to give them a voice and helps them take the first step.

I’m also very active in my own community. Right now I am working on the steering committee for an initiative called The Spot, which will build from the ground up. It will be a youth space inside of Malvern. It will have a meeting space, recording studio, etc. for all types of youth in the community. I am helping put it all together.

Take us along the path (personal & professional) that took you where you are today.
When I was younger I knew I wanted to be a writer but I didn’t know where it would take me. I didn’t know what it meant but all I knew is that I wanted to write. The funny story, I applied to only one school for journalism and the rest were for business majors. I got accepted to the other schools and rejected from Humber for journalism-Then one day I got a notice in the mail stating that I had been now accepted into Humber, it was weird. But I just took it as a sign and I took the opportunity.

The start to my magazine was rocky. When I got accepted into Humber, I was getting really low grades on my assignments because I didn’t understand it. So I made it my mission to be successful. I went in with a motive in mind. I wanted to bring a positive voice to the media for people who are not dominant. I noticed that in the media, they cover alot of people a certain way. I’m talking about different races and economic backgrounds. I worked extra hard to do well and by the time I graduated I was the editor-in-chief of a college publication which actually won an award in the United States. That was a turning point for me. That’s when I started to talk with my co-founder about starting a magazine, trying to put a Canadian hip hop voice on the newsstand.

It started in my mom’s basement. It had very humble beginnings. We’ve come a long way, it is now distributed nationally and in the United States. We print 25,000 copies and we have a strong online presence and receive up to 1 million views a month. We’re an outlet for writers, photographers, etc to get their work out there. .. like a stepping stone. But also a place where people can get great journalism about urban culture. You can get it from Mcleans or Toronto Life, but why isn’t there something like that for us?

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given?
There’s always going to be stressful moments. A moment where you feel that you can’t take it anymore. Someone once told me that “ultimately, nothing matters”. What he was trying to say is, when things seem like your world is crashing, a year from now you will look back and laugh. So don’t be willing to give up everything over one bad day. The next day will be better. It will all pass.

What advice do you have for women who want to follow in your footsteps?
I can’t tell you how many people told me that journalism or the magazine wouldn’t work for me. I even remember a bus driver telling me that people who look like me are not journalists and that I should be taking something else. No matter what you try to pursue there will always be people who doubt you. You just have to remember that it feels that much better to prove them wrong. So just do it. Keep on pushing.

Is it possible for a woman to successfully balance both love and career? Why or why not?
Lol, I’m still working on it. I’m sure it’s possible. I know that there are alot of stigmas about successful business women and not being able to have a successful love life. But I think if there’s a level of understanding between the two people involved, it can happen.

What’s next for you?
Travel. I had my first opportunity to go to Cuba last year, and the most fascinating part of the whole trip wasn’t the resort, it was all the exploring I got to do around the country. The journalist in me loves to explore different places and educate myself about other cultures and other ways of life. At some point I’d love to return back to school as well.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years... 10 years?
Definitely at the head of a company that is constantly growing. I’d love to see Urbanology grow. I would like it to be the “Rogers” of urban media. I also want to continue to work with the youth. I don’t think enough people do it. I don’t think enough people are role models in their everyday lives.

And lastly, in your opinion, What do Women Want??
I can’t tell you want women want but I can tell you what I want. Respect. I think that it’s a big thing for me personally and alot of other women. I think it’s something that we are still trying to earn and I don’t think that we should have to. There’s alot that women bring to this world and we deserve fair respect.

'The Rachel Zoe Collection' Debut At Holt Renfrew

WWW loves Rachel Zoe. She is a stylist to the stars and has taken the industry by storm. You've seen her team work their wardrobe magic on A-List celebs like: Cameron Diaz, Eva Mendes, Jennifer Garner and Anne Hathaway. Not only is she responsible for the images of hundreds of clients, but Zoe is also the executive producer and star of her own reality show, The Rachel Zoe Project, on the U.S. Bravo network, which begins its fourth season in September.

The Toronto Star interviewed Zoe last week and got the dish on her latest venture, a line of clothing and accessories called 'The Rachel Zoe Collection' which debuted in Toronto last Monday at Holt Renfrew, Bloor Street.

"The Collection is all about the ’60s and ’70s, decades that she has long championed, and extending the Zoe brand of style — oversized sunglasses, flowy boho vintage and Valley Girl effusion (“I die, I die!” being one of her catch phrases). She cites the long-ago Charlie perfume girl as one of her inspirations. “The image of her getting out of a taxi and tossing her hair never leaves my mind. It is emblematic of an exemplary time period. That confident look never goes out of style.”

Zoe describes the line as 'classic' and unlike the expensive garments that she uses to dress her clients, Rachel has priced her collection ranging from $195 to $650.

“I looked at what was out there, because I see everything that comes down the runway, see every item in every showroom. What was missing were affordable timeless pieces. Tuxedos, capes, a perfect career-woman suit. They are on trend but contrary to what people think about me as a proponent of wild and over-the-top trendy excess, they are not trendy. These are pieces that will last much more than a three-month fashion cycle. I want the core pieces in the collection to stay in my wardrobe so I can look back five years from now and still want to wear the tuxedo from the first season," says Zoe.

Rachel Zoe has no design training but claims that the magic she brings is in the fit and believes that clothing is all about the feel.

I say: Meet Tiffany Naval. She is a creative mastermind. I swear she works on a million things at once and somehow still manages to complete each project with a detailed eye and an excellent end result. What I love about Tiffany is that she doesn't let any obstacle get in her way. Late 20's, I am looking forward to being 30, I feel like it is a very defining age and the vision I have for myself at 30 is very exciting.

I look at it as “sharing” but I'll compromise and say.... Taken by choice.

First job ever?
Growing up, my parents never wanted me to work, they used to tell me that I'll soon be working for the rest of my life and to just enjoy being young and explore my creativity. Entrepreneurial however, when I was seven, I got heavy into making jewelry, particularly bracelets. I remember my mom handing me an empty jar with six quarters in it “for change” and told me that I should make a business of my bracelets and sell them to my friends who were always asking me to make them one. I sold them anywhere from fifty to seventy-five cents on the school bus and in the mornings during first recess. I eventually took special offers and moved up to banking a dollar fifty a pop!

First “real” job?
Definitely motherhood. Its been almost eleven years now and it still manages to take me back that I am in charge of a human life! It's a very real job and will be the most rewarding one I will ever have for sure. Much love to my mini.

I am relaunching the popular “Night Market” series showcasing local Toron
to artists in all different kinds of mediums and crafts with another partner, Robin Lacambra.

In it's final stages, a collective called “In Love With Excellence”, is launching an online vintage boutique that features clothing, accessories and footwear. I am a part of this collective. Amongst all these things and more, I am constantly exploring and testing the artist in me.

Take us along the path (personal & professional) that took you where you are today.
Wow. You guys really get women to dig deep within themselves...that's amazing. I think this is the first time I've ever had to really think about the path I've been on...I've been pushing forward for so long I haven't really taken a moment to look back. I always try encourage and challenge women of all ages to look at themselves, to analyze themselves in order to attain a better understanding of who they are. To continually be aware of yourself. I believe with that comes self-awareness which then turns into empowerment.

But back to answering the question...
I grew up with a lot of family values. Growing up my father always used to tell us that the reason why he “chose” for us to live in such a small house was so we can be close to each other. I am the eldest of four, two brothers and a baby sister nine years younger. My mother had me at twenty-two and decided to be a stay-at-home mom for sixteen years, it didn't make sense for her to work super hard just to pay someone else to watch us. Being her first daughter and having opportunities that she had never had, it was important to her to stress to me all the time that I had the freedom to do whatever I wanted. That perspective has been a defining one in regards to the person I am today.

My father has been working for himself for as long as I can remember. I used to help him in his basement office organizing files (nothing was digital then), he would tell the horror stories of part-time jobs he had before he married my mom. How one day he decided enough was enough and started his own business. Because of this business (which is still to this day successful and the ultimate source of income that has always supported my family) he would always have time to take us out to lunch from school, sit with us for breakfast and dinner. Dinner was big in my house. No matter what you were doing we always sat at the table as a family. It was the time when my parents would check in with all of us. It was a very stable household, the fellowship was strong and the morals were enforced properly. The foundation was set for me, my parents did an amazing job raising myself and my three siblings...it is definitely their hard work, support, sacrifice and love that has shaped me to be who I am today. It's a mix of my mother's ideals, my father's entrepreneurial spirit and both of their strong moral foundations that has helped to blaze the trail I have been following both personally and professionally.

What’s the toughest thing you’ve been faced with thus far?
I think the hardest thing I've been faced with thus far is myself. Four years ago I decided to leave the home of my parents and find a place for me and my daughter. I was in a serious transition, everything you can think of, left my boyfriend, dropped out of college for the second time, lost a lot of “friends”, no job...it wasn't ideal.

Taking the risk of feeling alone and not being able to support myself and my daughter was the scariest thing about it. Having nights where it would just be me in the house with nothing but my thoughts were the true testaments. It really made me think about myself - question myself. Scrutinize subjects of who I wanted to be as a person, as a mother, as a lover and most importantly as a woman. What do I want to do...what do I stand for...what I can offer the world and what part of the world I want to take on. I truly believe that facing myself was the driving force that gave me the power to love myself.

What did your parents want you to be?
My parents were always good about giving me the freedom to decide what I wanted to be. They never put any titles or occupations in my head as a child. What they did do, was give me the confidence to ensure that whatever it was that I wanted to be - I could be. Stability was huge too actually, they always stressed the importance of leading a stable life. So I guess what they always wanted me to be was stable. Ha.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given?
To be proactive, not reactive. At the end of the day you are ultimately in control of your life. It's what you make of it not what you dream it could be.

What advice do you have for women who want to follow in your footsteps?
I would encourage and challenge every woman to walk a path that is her own. Take the time to get to know yourself. I feel that as women we often find affirmation in others because of insecurities in ourselves and this gets in the way of our personal development, our careers and in actualizing true and honest love. Before you can honestly walk a clear path you have to know your stride.

Is it possible for a woman to successfully balance both love and career? Why or why not?
Yes. If she chooses to. It really is a choice.
Both are jobs and both are hard work. You have to really know yourself to be able to know where to compromise and where never to.

What’s next for you?
*Seventy Seven, a creative consulting company that I am developing.
*Mae to Jun, a creative crafts workshop series of “experiential learning”.
*Prom Contest 2012, a contest celebrating inner beauty and confidence in young women.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years... 10 years?
Ooohhh...if you asked me 5 years ago where I'd be in 5 years, it wouldn't have been this! Same goes for 10 years ago...10 years ago I was 18 and I had a baby that wasn't even 1 yet.

Obviously it's hard to say but ultimately I see myself doing a hundred different things at once as oppose to just ten. Having more opportunities to build off of what I am passionate about today. Art, culture, travel, the empowerment of women, food, fashion, life.

In ten years I will be pregnant with my second child, my cousin just had her first born at 38 so I'm completely confident that I will be super healthy and super fit to endure such a thing. That's it. I'm gonna be pregnant. And fabulous. The rest is to be figured out between now and then.

And lastly, in your opinion, What do Women Want??
Ultimately I think that all women want and should want to be able to love themselves.

Does Online Life Give You 'Popcorn Brain'?

"When Hilarie Cash arrives home from work in the evening, she has a choice: She can go outside and tend to her garden or she can hop on her laptop. The lilacs really need weeding. The computer, on the other hand, can wait, as her work is done for the day. Despite this, Cash feels drawn to the computer, as if it's a magnet pulling her in. Maybe there's an e-mail from a friend awaiting her, or a funny tweet, or a new picture posted on Facebook. "I find it extremely difficult to walk away," Cash says. "It's so hard to tell myself, 'Don't do it. Go do the gardening."

Question: Does it really matter if Cash gardens or goes online?

Answer: According to experts and researchers like David Levy, a professor with the Information School at the University of Washington, it absolutely does matter! They have come to the conclusion that 'Popcorn Brain' -- a brain so accustomed to the constant stimulation of electronic multitasking that we're unfit for life offline, where things pop at a much slower pace-- is the result of extended hours online.

"It's really ubiquitous," says Cash, a counselor who treats people who have trouble giving up their gadgets. "We can't just sit quietly and wait for a bus, and that's too bad, because our brains need that down time to rest, to process things."

It has recently been discovered that multitasking on the Internet can make you forget how to read human emotions. Human interaction doesn't get practiced enough and technology has unfortunately taken its place.

According to a new study, over time, and with enough internet usage, the structure of our brains can actually physically change. So below are some helpful tips to cope with 'Popcorn Brain'.

1. Keep a record of your online life
Keep track of how much time you spend online, and what you're doing with it, Levy suggests. Note how you feel before and during your time at the computer.

"Everyone I've told to do this has come back with personal realizations," he says. "Very commonly, people will say they tend to go online when they're feeling anxious or bored."

2. Set time limits for your Internet use
Give yourself a specific time period -- say two hours -- to answer personal e-mails, update your Facebook page, and check texts, Cash suggests. After that, it's time to turn the computer (or phone) off and do something offline.

3. Stare out the window
Take two minutes to stare out the window. Levy says this can help train your brain to slow down a bit.

4. Establish "free times"
In a blog on Psychology Today, psychologist Robert Leahy recommends experimenting with BlackBerry-free times. "For example, "I won't check my messages between 6 and 9 p.m.," he writes. Leahy, director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy, also recommends rewarding yourself for every hour that you don't check. "Tell yourself that you are reclaiming your life," he writes.

5. Phone a friend
Bloggers on WikiHow have been sharing their own list of tips on how to wean themselves off of everything from Internet searching to texting. One person suggests phoning a friend instead of sending instant messages. "Call a friend and ask them to go outside for at least 3 hours a day," they write. "This will distract you from the computer."

6. Get tested
According to the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction, you may have a problem if loved ones are becoming troubled with the amount of time you are devoting to the Internet or if you experience guilt or shame. They offer a virtual Internet addiction test that can help you determine whether it might be time to shut down, logoff or change your IM status to "away."

I say: I'm loving tip #5. I find that no one talks anymore unless it is via blackberry, FB chat, twitter etc. I value those girl talks with friends on the phone or face to face, but it seems as if it is getting harder to connect with people these days because of this technology obsession. Yes, networking is important and having an online presence is essential, but you want to make sure that the time you spend online isn't taking you away from life's simple pleasures offline. I practically live in Starbucks. It's where I do a lot of my work. One random Saturday morning, I met another young woman who was in the middle of reading a book that I had previously read (Coldest Winter- By Sistah Souljah). Anyway, we got to chit chatting (I always meet the most interesting people inside Starbucks! it's great)and she recommended books of all genres to me, one of which was this novel. She swore up and down that it was a good read....and after reading it myself, I also discovered that it was - which is why I am passing this book onto you ladies. Peep the synopsis below.

Reema Major Talks Style & Music with Vibe Vixen

She has a confidence and self-assurance that makes you forget she’s only 16 years young. Reema Major, born in Sudan and raised in both Canada and Kansas City, has a musical ear that is seldom seen or heard of at such a young age. While her rhymes are hard-hitting and sometimes quite raw (see: 2010 BET’s Hip Hop Award cypher), listen between the lines and you’ll catch pieces of her very real and not-always-fun life tales. Her brightly-colored eclectic style is simply an additive to the total rapping-singing package, throwing her in the lion’s den of rap blabbers comparing her to Nicki Minaj.

As she prepares her debut album, set to release on Universal Music Canada/Interscope/CherryTree, the ’95 baby hit the VIBE Vixen offices to play a few joints from the upcoming project and let us get to know her a bit better. The minor Miss Major dished about her opinion of the Minaj comparisons, growing up quickly in a tough world and meeting her father through MySpace.

What was the first thing that drew you to hip-hop?
The cypher. When I was five, my older cousin used to rap. It was summertime and everyone was always outside. She babysat me, and they were always doing cyphers. I was just interested. I fell in love with the art, the whole aspect of rap, from the storyline, to putting the “umph” in your tone. Writing was always an outlet, so once I learned to write, it was natural. I can’t really remember when I started loving it; it was just always there.

A lot of talent has come from Toronto. There’s Drake, Melanie Fiona, and others. Do you feel like you’re representing for Toronto or for everywhere that you’re from?
I feel like I’m representing from every single place I’m from. I’m representing for Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) and definitely Toronto. That’s a city I spend a lot of time in. Definitely Kansas City because that’s another city I’ve spent a lot of time in. I’ve been around so much that I haven’t been at one place more than the other another. I don’t have a solid place, but if you ask me where I’m from I’m going to tell you Sudan because that’s my birthplace, and I’m still fluent in the language and I love my family. So I’m representing everywhere

You’ve been compared to Nicki Minaj in a lot of ways, what do you say about that?
It doesn’t bother me at all. When you’re a female, you’re gonna be compared to somebody. If you don’t get compared you’re really wack, and you’re not going anywhere. It’s a compliment. You wanna compare me to the hottest chick in the game right now, I’m fine with that. In terms of emcees ,I’m sure people can see the separation.

What have you seen thus far, being a female in a male-dominated industry?
You just have to prove yourself more. I just consider it motivation, so it doesn’t really bother me. There’s more dudes in the game than girls, but we’re coming.

Are there any popular style trends that you’re really into?
I think everything gets recycled. I’ll see something, and it’s from the 80s or the 60s, so I think everything gets revamped. Everything has phases. You’re going to have a trend, then you go to the next one. I don’t like any specific trends. I say style over fashion. For example, whether it’s $2000 or $2, I’m going to buy it. I love labels–Gucci, Louis, Fendi, Prada–but I’d rather pull it, pick it and like it rather than it just be a brand.

My granddaddy had a taxi company and a popular auto repair shop so I'd do a car wash for 10 bucks. All the taxi drivers (about 20) would get their car washed by me when they signed off work to have ready by morning every day.

I remember in grade 3, friendship bracelets were really popular. I made some, rocked them at school & once they garnered interest, I made little invoice order forms for everybody to fill out to sell them. I bought supplies at the dollar store (cheapest price possible) and paid a girl $1 for each bracelet she made (needed more man power lol) & sold them at school for 5 bucks a pop! Let's just say my mom was concerned when her 8 year old walked in with $350 in loonies and toonies!

Take us along the path (personal & professional) that took you where you are today.
I was in the back of my moms car, rapping all the words to "Dear Mama" by Tupac Shakur. My mom's best friend was fascinated because I was 6 years old & had only heard the song a few times & already had it memorized. She had heard about a black history month talent show that was taking place & told my mom I should perform. I convinced my mom to let me do it & when I did, got a standing ovation (the footage of me doing the butterfly dance move is so embarrassing!). The support from the audience motivated me a lot. Throughout the years, I performed in many school talent shows, plays, anywhere that would let me. When I was 13 years old, a DJ stumbled upon some tapes of my performances, and made a call to Ivan Berry (International A&R of BMG). Ivan called me & I sang for him over the phone. My family & I then flew out to meet him & the folks at BMG. I was then signed & in the studio working on my first album. From there I began travelling a lot - doing shows, press, etc. & worked hard with my tutor feverishly on the hours I had open (I graduated with my class on time! Something I'm very proud of!) Released my second album, than took some time to hone my songwriting skills & figure out what I wanted to do next. By 19, I realized I wanted more control of my music creatively. I went through some personal hurdles and decided I wanted to explore what the music industry had to offer on my own. I left BMG & moved to Atlanta. I then stayed in New York & LA for some months & pretty much met & had meetings with as many music people as possible, from big label presidents to influential executives, I worked with many different camps, recording songs & negotiating deals, from Ne-Yo to Missy Elliot, Rihanna to Outkast. But I still wasn't satisfied with the creative control I was being offered. I decided to develop KCI, study the business & get mentored by some top entertainment lawyers out of LA and Toronto. I then realized, I had to own my content (publishing, my masters etc,.) like I was the record label. I met back with Ivan Berry (mentor & one of the many few I discovered I could trust) about making this possible & he did. His company, tanjola & mine, KCI, are releasing my third album next year in conjunction with Universal. Sometimes you have to take chances, make a lot of mistakes to get what you truly want.

What’s the toughest thing you’ve been faced with thus far?
Learning whom to trust. I was always pretty naive growing up so when I experienced betrayals from people who were close to me, it hit me hard. Self-discovery for anybody is really tough. It takes a lot of hardships, time & experience to discover who we truly are. Growing up in the music industry was difficult. Being pushed in different directions & being open to criticism when your 13 on a large scale isn't the easiest. Being a singer, you're constantly self-projecting your work and who you are, but when you don't know what that is, it can be a bit blurry. The road to get there was a long and hard one, but the music I created as a result was worth it. And knowing who you are as a person & being confident in your skin is an amazing feeling. I've had some tough times that I didn't understand then but I needed them to develop tough skin. Now my therapy is writing about it in a song.

What did your parents want you to be?
As long as I got good grades & finished school, my parents supported anything I wanted to do. I always heard "you can be anything you want to be if you put your mind to it." My mom gave me my middle name "Chante", which means "sing" in French before I was born. She said I reacted to only music when she was pregnant with me. Luckily, my parents didn't push me into music, I was able to choose it for myself.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given?
Giving to others is where you'll find true fulfillment. When you die you can't take anything you have with you. All that matters is how you treat people while your still here.

What advice do you have for women who want to follow in your footsteps?
You have the power to make your life happen the way you’ve always dreamed of. When we're children, we dream BIG. But as we get older, our own inhibitions & self-fear develop, and suddenly we restrict our own potential. There are enough obstacles in everyday life, don't add more for yourself! Today will never happen again. Productivity is so important. Good Karma, being positive & trusting God will do the rest.

If you want to be a singer - find a mentor, study and practice at your talent. I performed anywhere that would let me. I've read many books (still do!) on entertainment law and studied how record labels operate (from finances, laws in each territory, royalties, publishing). I can even negotiate my own contracts. Don't leave any corner untouched! Sponge up as much information about all things music as possible! Perform as often as you can & hone your songwriting. Figure out who you are, what you want to say to the world & stand behind it.

What’s next for you?
Releasing my new album "Night & Day" is priority. Then to hit the road & go on tour! I can't wait to visit new countries and perform!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years... 10 years?
I see myself still making music & touring. Doing film, in front and behind the scenes. I want to find talent in fashion and music, and be apart of making their dreams come true. Developing my own charity & making a difference. Continuing my education. I just hope to still be challenging myself & accomplishing new goals. In 10 years, I hope to already have my own family.

To be loved and appreciated by those that matter most.

Beauty Post: Do Cosmetic Ads Tell The Truth?

These days, au naturel still means wearing at least some mascara and lipgloss. With all of the print ads on billboards and in magazines, you can't get away from the hype surrounding how much these products will further enhance the features that God gave us. I was reading an article in the living section of CNN.com called Why we buy anyway and the content explored the false impressions that the media influences on women around the world.

Experts say, "That women who think beauty products will make them look younger, tend to be dissatisfied with their lives." Such a powerful statement which unfortunately, is the truth. I compare it to what I call, women who are 'Young, Broke & Fabulous' - which are individuals who chase surgery, material things (and/or in this case beauty products) they can't afford or have no business metalling with in order to fulfill a void in their own lives and make others think they are something they aren't.

Cosmetics saleswoman, Shannon Barnes admits that she receives the same question on a daily basis from women who stop at her counter after noticing a mascara ad, "Are those lashes real?" Her response...."Mascara alone would never - could never - produce eyelashes as full and thick as those on models."

This interview follows the banning of two recent L'Oreal ads featuring Julia Roberts and Christy Turlington in the UK for being 'so retouched they no longer reflect reality.' Having such an influential part of the beauty industry, cosmetic ads are stirring huge debate over whether real women should be used instead of 'spectacular ones'.

"If women are really trying to figure out how to love themselves, trying to find that self-worth in a product or a cream, then these companies are not really selling a product, they're selling a state of mind," says Brooke Miller, a psychotherapist.

With this said, do you feel pressure to look a certain way in order to fit the standard of beauty that society has created for women?
