In episode six, which aired on Debre Birhan Fana FM 94.0 on 28 July 2022, the program focused on the challenges of livestock feed in the North Shewa Zone's, Moretna Jiru District. Livestock experts and district administrators were interviewed and shared their experiences with feed challenges in the district and how the district authorities are closely working with the Africa RISING and Accelerating the Impact of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) projects to increase livestock feed access for farmers. Currently, 265 farmers in the district have adopted feed and forage technologies such as oats, fodder beet, desho grass and alfalfa, and the results are promising.

Improved troughs designed by the Africa RISING project can save 27% of animal feed which would otherwise be wasted.

Under the Africa RISING project in Ethiopia, the improved troughs have been designed, tested and evaluated for feeding cattle, sheep and goats. Results from monitoring the use of the improved feed troughs in four sites in Ethiopia showed that they saved 27% of the feed biomass offered to the animals compared to the traditional feed troughs. This film highlights the works of Africa RISING in helping smallholder farmers with this improved technology.

There have been over 22,000 studies on the best ways for farmers to feed their livestock. But how many have looked at whether farmers actually benefited?

Tim Offei-Addo presents as Jeremy Cherfas interviews Isabelle Baltenweck, leader of the Policies, Institutions and Livelihoods program at ILRI, about the differences and distances between researchers and farmers for ILRI's podcast, The Boma.

Farm animals are critical for human development. In Ethiopia livestock contributes up to 46% of the country’s agricultural GDP and the need for sustainable livestock feeds is high in many parts of the country. This film highlights the works of Africa RISING in helping smallholder farmers to increase forage production in a sustainable way and meet the feed demand.

In the ‘Land of a thousand hills’ where the largely steep landscape has led to severe erosion, finding sufficient feed to support the growing dairy industry has been a major challenge to smallholder farmers.

However, a visit to farmers in Eastern and Southern provinces of Rwanda during the country's dry season in July revealed that the climate smart Brachiaria grass—or ivugbwe as it is known locally—has the potential to extend forage availability throughout the year.

In this 5-minute video, Rwandan dairy farmers talk about why Brachiaria grass has quickly become a favourite forage for their livestock.

The “FEAST” livestock feed-assessment tool has been widely promoted and adopted, but as time passed the research team started receiving feedback. They were told that the tool was gender-blind. So the researchers adapted the tool to measure gender-related issues. Pretesting showed that the tool had missed a lot of important information – on roles, problems, preferences, etc. The team also reviewed the process of gathering data and checking its accuracy (for example, making separate groups of men and women). The tool has improved tremendously, but it now takes double the time to apply. The researchers want to keep the tool acceptable and popular while making it better at reflecting gender realities. Interview with Ben Lukuyu (ILRI) for the book "A different kettle of fish? Gender integration in livestock and fish research". http://hdl.handle.net/10568/76684
