The music choice is very random, more often than not, out of the genre of the bands featured. For once, Arctic Monkeys covered the Girls Aloud song, Love Machine. It's fun and the covers often turn out to be quite a delight to hear.

Here's a compilation of a couple of covers did on the show this year. From quirky band The Kooks getting their Coldplay on by singing Violet Hill to songstress Adele belting out a Strokes classic Last Nite or Duffy trying a Hotchip tune or to the boys of The Last Shadow Puppets doing a Rihanna and much, much more... all these covers, I say, is quite interesting and I reckon you give them a listen.

Downloadables! (right click, save target as)

"Violet Hill (Coldplay cover)" - The Kooks
"Last Nite (The Strokes cover)" - Adele
"S.O.S. It was two weeks ago when I noticed I've been following William Beckett on Tumblr for quite sometime already that I decided to really give their music a try. Besides, what's the use of following Bill if I don't even know their stuff, right? And so I did. And I never looked back.

I had quite a few prejudices about the band. I, honestly, am not one who listens to a lot of music by the bands of the Fueled by Ramen label. It's just recently that I embraced Paramore because I thought their song "That's What You Get" was too damn catchy to not notice. Other than that, my music listening revolved everywhere else but the FBR clan.

Anyway, I have to give it up to TAI for not letting me down. I started with Santi cause that's the one I currently have and I was actually surprised. It is nowhere near the sound of their fellow FBR bands, specifically Fall Out Boy, who also have the same Chicago roots.

Santi is a record that dreams big. It is a good record splattered with songs with spectacular rhythm sections. I think that that section is what stood out the most and distinguished TAI from the others in their clan. There were traces of Killers influence in their sounds but they made use of it quite nicely and transformed it into sometimes dance-punk, to power-pop anthems ready for the radio airwaves. Lyrically, however, Santi didn't do much for me. Yes, it is witty but the wit is not enough. I heard a couple of songs from their debut Almost Here and for me, the writing is specifically better in that particular record.

Other than that, after listening to 1.5/3 of TAI's discography, I have to say that I'm now a fan. Santi was good, Almost Here, from what I've heard so far, seems promising. I cannot wait to listen to Fast Times at Barrington High and hear more of what they can do.

I've only heard their single, About A Girl, and I can say that I enjoyed it but don't love it as much as I thought I would. The video is fun and nostalgic though and Beckett's flair with the camera and performing is so in tact and so full-on that I can say I enjoyed it. Really. Other than that, I'll have my say on Fast Times when I actually listened to it in full. Til then, I'll leave you with the video of About A Girl.

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle> I have to admit, I just really gave The Academy Is... a listen a couple of weeks ago. Til then, I'll leave you with the video of About A Girl. </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>videos, reviews, the academy is...</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.youtube.com/v/3V_WAvshAg4&hl=en&fs=1</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

MySpace Music: South Jordan

There’s something extremely beautiful about their music-- it’s simple yet so sincere and I love it. I remember months ago when I was actually enjoying Britney Spears' 5th studio album Blackout and now, Ms. Brit is at it again. After winning 3 VMA's weeks ago, she debuts her new single "Womanizer" off her sixth album Circus which is due out on 23 December (her birthday).

Well, the single's been released for days already but I just listened to it today after hearing a remix done by one of my favorite musicians/remixologists, Brooklyn's Brad Walsh. Much like every remix done by Mr. Walsh, "Womanizer", after going through Brad's bag of electro-remix-tricks became an instant club tune. The original is not as spectacular as I thought it would be but this little remix gives it that extra "oomph". Thank the heavens for this remix.

Downloadables!
Womanizer - Britney Spears
Womanizer - Brad Walsh remix

KAT-TUN: Queen of Pirates Review

Popular Japanese boy band KAT-TUN recently released their third studio effort under J-One Records, “Queen of Pirates”. I’ve got to admit that KAT-TUN cannot be considered the best singing JE group out there but what makes them different from the other Johnny’s bands would be their sexy-wholesome image. With regards to their music, KAT-TUN is also very experimental with their attempt to touch more on Western and R&B, infusing it in their current sound which, I guess is an advantage to them for they can attract a bigger audience apart from their fans.

Here are three of my choice tracks from Queen of Pirates:

12 O’CLOCK

The distinct beat in the background while Jin Akanishi narrates his fucked up life of partying every hour (and in English…) gives a certain vibe on the song that would make you want to listen more intently. As the song goes on, you will start to feel the electro rock elements contained in it that gives a party-type-song impression to it. It makes me want to go to a club as soon as possible and just have fun.

This definitely is my favorite track in the album probably because it is quite surprising and bold for KAT-TUN to release a song in this kind of genre (based from the fact that they’re a boyband under Johnny’s Entertainment). More experimentation is always good for the growth of the whole group.

MOTHER FATHER

The only ballad in the album packed with a pleasant melody that can bring tears to the eyes. It is a beautifully penned song (search for the English translation online) that probably anyone can relate to in some ways.

Every member of KAT-TUN did a great job singing it. It’s just so mellow and easy to the ears. I really like them singing these kinds of songs once in a while…and another credit to the dramatic rap by Koki here. Fantastic job. I never thought rap could give so much emotion as it did in this particular song.

SHOT

One of the most unusual sounding tracks in the album with the utilization of the saxophone, Shot became a feel-good jazz-pop song that is both calming and exciting to the ears.

Over-all: 4/5

Based from the songs, it’s quite obvious that KAT-TUN brought a wide range of song genres in this album (which is definitely not common to other JE boy bands, really). The songs in QoP can stay on repeat in my player without me getting tired of that easily. I like the feel of the entire album. Most songs are upbeat and for dancing with different genres, which I think is awesome.

Well, to the others who are not JE fans yet, please don’t judge KAT-TUN just because they’re a “boy band”. You know what I mean…and honestly, I’m really happy that KAT-TUN (and JE in general) finally came up with this kind of album that can be enjoyed by almost anyone.

Rico Blanco is back with a vengeance

LOKAL is a constant check-up of the new music the Philippines has to offer to the world. Rivermaya, in my opinion, was defined by Rico undeniable talent and for him to leave the band was heartbreaking. He was out of the radar for months and now, without even knowing it, he's back-- and with a new album in tow oh, and a fashion line for Human, too!

But let's focus on the album. I've seen it in record store shelves weeks ago but didn't really mind buying it. I guess I was still heartbroken but other than that, I was expecting his album to be very Rivermaya. My prejudices were proven wrong today as I turned on to the local MTV and saw the music video for his first single, "Yugto".

I was astounded by how different it sounds. Rico's music during the Rivermaya days was packed with powerful lyrics backed by good instrumentation. "Yugto" seemingly unleashed the side of Rico that we didn't get to see during the Rivermaya days-- experimental, creative, raw and still, so powerful. Maybe even more powerful than ever before.

In his first single post-Maya, he opens up this new chapter of his life with a bang, almost like a thanks-but-no-thanks shoutout to his former band mates, or to everyone who doubted him. "Yugto" employed the use of orchestral music plus traditional, indigenous Filipino instruments (strings, in particular) and infused it with a more experimental-sounding Pinoy rock with more distortion effects and heavier basslines. It is beautiful music to the ears; fresh, comparing it to the current mainstream music scene in the country.

The video, directed by King Palisoc, looks as if it took a page from the The Ting Tings' That's Not My Name video with all the stage lights and boy-girl combo, but in this one, there's three of them. The video also showed us who Rico's new bassist is and it is none other than, the ever-so-talented Cynthia Alexander! Now, I'm stoked!

Rico obviously has evolved as a musician and is now ready to share to us this new chapter of his life. With a vengeance. </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>reviews, rico blanco, lokal</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.youtube.com/v/Vi10q9NlLqE&hl=en&fs=1</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Plus/Minus (+/-) is Snowblind

Having RSVP-ed to both their November 7 and 8 show here in the Philippines, finding this track out of their new album Xs On Your Eyes actually made my day. I'm now as excited as ever, for the album, the show and this track!

Here in "Snowblind", I was expecting a blasted start of instruments but what I got was a light but a beat full of melody that is almost sweet with the entrance of guitars and high-pitched keys. This lightness continues on until... here we go, the slight exhilaration I've been waiting for comes in, accompanied by the dusky vocals of James Baluyut and a faster and thump-filled drum beats and guitar hooks. The lyrics did not disappoint, too, with the song being more of a psychological thing rather than physical.

"Snowblind" made me look forward to the new album and of course, the live show. I was actually going to provide a mix for you guys with that awesome track on the list when this baby came out! A fresh Vampire Weekend track straight out of the soundtrack of one of the films I'm dying to see already, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

I have to admit, I'm such a whore for VW and people I know have already backlashed after they came out of the indie nation but who cares? The band is still as good as ever and this latest track, entitled "Ottoman" is a proof to that.

It's pop spiked with their trademark Afro-beats with a play of sticks, keys and, if my ears were not lying to me, strings (violins, perhaps) in the background. I dig the melodies of this new track considering its slower, but not so, than usual. You won't get lost, it's still very VW and still very awesome.

Downloadables!
"Ottoman" - Vampire Weekend
"Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa (The Teenagers remix)" - Vampire Weekend

Are we human? The backing drum beat is in a catchy mid-tempo that will set your feet thumping. It's not current-dancefloor material but it's filled with enough house to get you going and in a way, excite you with the new album. But just a bit.

The thing is, "Human" is still very Killers to me that I'm a bit skeptical if Day & Age would even provide us with something new. Will the album live up to the hype? I guess I'll just have to wait for November to answer my question.

Day & Age drops US/worldwide on 25 November 2008 (24 November for the UK) while the digital download for Human will be available on 30 September.

To listen to "Human", visit the band's official website, www.thekillersmusic.com

Downloadables!
"Human" - The Killers (FULL TRACK)

Edit: I posted a sample track of Human a few days back. Something probably out of your scope, something beautifully different with that hint of oddness that we all love.

Words Can't Grasp is the musical concoction of poet/musician Johnny Lakas. Inspired by Beat Generation, the Anderson based musician decided to set his poetry to music and out comes this ambient, almost creepy chill-out musical experience that might rattle anyone at first hear but will sink in and take the senses to an all-time high after a few more spins.

Take the experimental Shades of Green. It's light but equally daunting. The airy electronica set in the background reminds you of starry skies, as if it's a song of astral proportions. The vocals haunts you as you're transported from terra cotta to the open space filled with nothing but stars and galaxies. It has an other-wordly feel that is beautiful and inspired.

Autumn on the other hand is darker than the surreal, astro feel of Shades of Green. It starts slow with the sound of pianos coming in but after sometime, the poetry set in helicopter-ish distortions catapults in the background and the sweet keys suddenly shifts into something heavier than you first thought. It stays steady but the sound of the helicopter distortions gets heavier and as the high ambient keys come in, and a crunch cut in the near end, the song drives from sweet to sad, almost melancholic. It finishes off rather awkwardly, quickly, but the music, stays. It's beautiful and it's my personal favorite.

Words Can't Grasp is undeniably different.

It's strange, it's odd, it's a ride to the nirvana of chill. It can calm you down or send shivers down your spine; it can make you think, and it's the music perfect for those moments of needed solitude and reclusion. I'd like to say it's music for the soul cause it gets to you-- in weird melancholic, or sometimes haunting ways.

I say have a listen. It's definitely not just some music you listen to, it's more of an experience.

Downloadables!
"Autumn" - Words Can't Grasp

CHECK IT OUT:
Words Can't Grasp MySpace

Must-Hype: War Tapes

A band described by critics as a cross between Interpol, AFI and The Cure, War Tapes on their first effort did not disappoint the staggering comparison to the three massive names in music.

In their debut EP, the band delivered four atmospheric rock songs they like to coin “heart quaking doom pop”. And heart quaking it is. In the single (plus fan popular and free to download track), “Dreaming Of You”, War Tapes opened with a rather Interpol-ish blast of guitar and drum swells that gets listeners going and then abruptly dies down to welcome the “doom” part of their music—the vocals of Neil.

Reminiscent of a more textured Ian Curtis crossed with a bit of the slyness of Brandon Flowers, Neil’s gothic vocals (that has obvious post-punk influences, as well) transcends and swerves steadily along with the music, continuously swelling as the guitars, drums and bass carries on and backing vocals from Becca (on bass) seeps right on through, like a ghost bringing forth haunting melodies; beautifully unnerving.

The song’s climax comes in at the 2:30 mark when the guitar solo comes in with thundering momentum and then slows down, stops for a two-count (or three) and hits it again with heavy-hitting instrumentation and progression, and some half-shouts from Neil. A few more seconds of the incessant booming of surf guitars, bass lines and heavy drumming and the music slows down and ends perfectly (with a little doom/creep feeling) with the line, “I’m dreaming of you” and… a fantastic rock song is over after four and a half minutes.

Earlier, their sound was compared to the likes of Interpol, AFI and The Cure. I wouldn’t disagree on the comparison as they are as heavy-hitting as AFI and as atmospheric as The Cure and Interpol but I would like to think that they also go for a short detour at The Killers’ route. Okay, let’s throw in Joy Division too, that is, with regards to the vocals. I don’t know, but Ian Curtis just popped out when I first heard Neil’s voice. And that is never, ever a bad thing.

In all, I’m looking forward to more tunes from this new band from downtown L.A. They have the goods to deliver more astounding tunes and did I mention they’re touring with Tiger Army? And have toured with The Bravery and Smashing Pumpkins? Mmhmm. This band is going to make it and I’m on the look-out.

Downloadables!
"Dreaming Of You” by War Tapes

Check ‘em out:
War Tapes @ MySpace

*War Tapes' three-song EP is out under indie label Sarathan Records. Instead, he made a stellar first record that made Strokes and non-Strokes fans alike to clamor for his music. Sure his first was a bit unsteady with obvious roots from the music of his main band but that didn't stop him.

Two years after his debut was released, out comes the curly-haired guitarist with a new round-up of tunes that is very bluesy, guitar-filled and now, very un-Stroke-ish. The sound of Cómo Te Llama? gives a primal thought of familiarity and comfortability. It's a mix of different genres from blues rock, Beatle-esque Britpop and good ol' rock and roll.

It seems like two years has made Albert a better musician-- steadier, stronger and just plain better. His music now shies away from the usual Stroke sound and instead, travels its own path to comfortable rock tunes that anyone could possibly listen to for a long, long time.

CHECK IT OUT!
Listen to Cómo Te Llama? here.

Cómo Te Llama drops on the 8th of July under RCA Black Seal Records.

Lokal Spotlight: Freedom & Liberty Alone

It's rare for me to feature a band/musicians from my home base, I know. The Philippine music scene, the mainstream especially, is just not my cup of tea. It's way too generic for my taste and eventhough there are a few exceptions, majority just doesn't cut it for me.

That's why I always head underground: to the unsigned kids playing at bars and gig spots all across the metro. Here I find musical gems that make me proud I'm a Filipino and a music lover. Musicians who have tremendous passion in the work they do; musicians who give it their all for the sake of the music itself.

A good example to this is the band from the south of the metro, Freedom and Liberty Alone (FLA)-- four boys whose music has gained credit from rock radio station NU 107.5.

The four-piece band hailing from Alabang describes their music as "army rock", a genre I have never heard of before but a genre that I've grown fond of thanks to this band's rocking music. Influenced by bands such as Velvet Revolver, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the like, their style is very I-want-to-thrash-and-airguitar-in-my-bedroom which I completely adore. It's not overly loud and bombast. There's good use of instruments particularly the guitars and bass and it's not annoyingly screechy (unlike most bands nowadays, ugh).

Vocalist Gabbie Gamboa has a steady sound (I particularly love the screaming part in "Six Feet Under") all throughout their songs and a charisma that translates very well when they do live gigs. I haven't seen them play live, but I've seen the videos and they're something to watch out for.

I fancy their song "Roar" the most. The progression and the guitar effects is something quite fantastic. "Diary Under A Gun" and it's little-drummer-boy mixed with electric guitar goodness is following my top tracks in close second.

I say you check these boys out:
http://myspace.com/freedomandlibertyalone
http://freedomandliberty.multiply.com

Get Girl Talk For Free

Is it me or is everyone doing a Radiohead?

After Coldplay's free release of "Violet Hill", then comes electronic mash-up master Girl Talk offering a full album download for any price you want! Well maybe except for their mix of the Arctic Monkeys classic "When The Sun Goes Down". That I didn't fancy. But this MGMT remix is of course, no exception! It may not take you off your chair to shake and shimmy on the dancefloor but it'll make you boogie and pop in your seats. It's electrifying as an "Electric Feel"! Downloadables! He recently posted on his YouTube account a new song entitled "Bohemian Love" dedicated to his ex-girlfriend, supermodel Kate Moss.

It's an honest, heartfelt love song and I love it. The rawness of the live track adds to the charm, the passion and the longing that the song encapsulates. Mr. Doherty obviously still has a thing for his ex-lover and the song could also border into desperation but I'm giving the guy the benefit of the doubt that he wrote this song because he's still madly in love with her.

Maybe it's my belief of romance, but I just think the song is beautiful. The lyrics ("I miss your face, I miss the places, what happened to her? what happened to me? Everytime I lie on the pillow, I cry...") evokes an emotion of regret and deep longing for something, making it more wonderful.

I suggest you hear the track, loves.

Downloadables!
"Bohemian Love" by Pete Doherty

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>Sure he has his crackhead quirks, but you cannot erase the fact that when Pete Doherty makes music, he makes it good.
