      <title>Ridden Like a Family Car</title>

&lt;div&gt;&lt;span&gt;This morning, I had a review with one of the senior managers at my job. These monthly reviews are time a for feedback and two way conversation about performance and productivity on the job. It's not a chewing out. We talk like grownups. One of the items discussed had to do with trust, "Do my managers trust me to complete a task?" I had to say yes, of course. But it made me think. I had a knee-jerk response about micro-managment as I took a defensive posture. But in retrospect, I could have handled it better.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;The Marines are a tough, highly trained group of individuals. Leadership is stitched into their soul. My brother was a Marine who served in Beirut during the mid '80s. He had friends die in '83 when a terrorist blew up their barracks. My brother-in-law served with the Marines in Iraq. I've been to Parris Island. Served along side Marines on an aircraft carrier during the Gulf War. They know a thing or two about leadership.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;I was reading on the Marine Corps' Leadership traits (&lt;a href="http://ow.ly/1c4viD)"&gt;http://ow.ly/1c4viD)&lt;/a&gt; and found a portion of this article could be pertinent to my life.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Having dependable Marines eliminates micromanagement, which allows the leader to focus on more pressing business.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Unfortunately, once a Marine exhibits he is undependable, he brings a good bit of attention to himself until he proves, once again, he is dependable. By bringing attention, I mean he&amp;rsquo;s likely to be ridden like a family car, so to say, until his dependability improves. I&amp;rsquo;m saying that&amp;rsquo;s necessarily the best way to handle it; I&amp;rsquo;m saying that&amp;rsquo;s what will happen having been on both sides of that ball.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Within a month of checking into my first duty station, my boss determined I had a horrible time management problem. His solution? I had to account for every 15-minute block of my day, and at the end of each day, we reviewed everything to see where I could have better used my time. To say I was ridden like a family car throughout the day would be putting it mildly, but thankfully, that didn&amp;rsquo;t last long. I hated (still do to this day) being micromanaged, and I did everything in my power to get out from under the debilitating situation in which I had put myself.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Have you ever had a boss tell you to do something you know how to do very well? Have you ever had him follow you to the site and then watch you work, peering over your shoulder? Fun, isn't it? That's annoying to say the least. It's the epitome of being micro-managed; not being supervised but being babysat.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;It drives me crazy.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;I need to be the type of individual who has earned my manager's trust. I don't want to give him any reason to have to make me account for every minute of my day. I've seen it happen. A driver complains about breaks, for example. There's never enough time in his day to take a break. This turns into a battle of let me manage every minute of your day, driver, so you will have time for your break. It's hand holding to the Nth degree. It's not an atmosphere of trust.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;I want to facilitate a culture of trust among my coworkers and managers. That means being accountable without being defensive. Take the first step to ask for feedback, even on a task I know I can handle. How could I do this better? Is there a faster way that will improve the results? Being micromanaged is the natural result of neglected training. It's both his fault and mine. It doesn't result in anyone's growth to embrace their position and desire to get better. It's demeaning. To facilitate trust, I need to be transparent, without excuse-making. Be ready to step up and take charge. Like a good soldier.&lt;/div&gt;

      <title>Why I Use Apple Computers.</title>

&lt;div&gt;&lt;span&gt;I started on a Commodore VIC-20. I loved being able to program in Basic and make something that would be fun and easy to use. L&lt;/span&gt;ike most of the world, I&amp;nbsp;followed the evolution of the PC and was a Windows user. I was pretty good at building a machine from scratch and installing versions of Windows. How did I use my machines? I was trying to make websites and create photo DVDs on the old homebuilt PC. Things started to go downhill with Windows XP. It was so virus-laden and buggy. I was helping a lot of people maintain their store bought machines; removing malware, viruses and trying to make things work. I spent many nights trying to keep my home-built machine running. It became a bit of pain and ate up a lot of my time. I have 3 kids and a full-time job. I work in the church. I have no time. The PC had issues. It had issues with drivers. It had issues with updates. It had issues with burning my photo DVDs and not being able to play them. It had issues with the kid's games crashing the OS. I wasn't seeing red, only blue. BSOD. I had issues just trying to be a user of this awesome technology that was supposed to make my life easier. It was a cycle of reinstalling and repairing Windows. I felt like a gerbil on a spin wheel, except the spin wheel had electricity sent through it on random occasions. Not fun. I decided it was time to be a user, not a technician.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;span&gt;My travels at work took me through Syracuse University on a weekly timeframe. I was in Newhouse School of broadcasting and ran into a few hardcore students who were using Macs. I was surprised that Apple computers had what it took to be used in a studio environment. Little did I know. They showed me a lab full of Macs, just used for photo and video editing. It took about 15 minutes to display the simplicity, the fun, and the power of real computing. I saw video edits for broadcasting. I was introduced to iPhoto, a full featured app that came on every Mac. I saw people USING their machines and doing amazing things with them. It's how things are supposed to be. I was in. But the price was a huge barrier. It was an investment. I would have to wait for tax-time to get my new machine.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;span&gt;At first, my wife was not on board at all. It took a few months of using the new iMac to persuade her mind. She went through the learning curve like any new user does. I was a geek and took right to the new OS. Now she likes it. She likes the fact she doesn't have to call me over to fix or get it running all the time. She has learned to be a Mac user also; getting things done. I had to show her basic aspects of iPhoto, Pages, Numbers and Safari but we were quickly off and running. I was making DVDs, filling up a huge iTunes library all organized by genre, editing wedding photos and made several websites all on our shiny new iMac. It was fun and reliable. I was having fun for the first time since my VIC-20.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;We soon replaced that 2006 20" iMac with a 24" model. It was beautiful. My wife loved it. She still says it was her favorite machine. She works from home and needs a big bright display for viewing scanned Tiffs. She could have a video or DVD playing, work, have email going, Pages for her time sheet and it just chugged along day-in day-out. For years.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;I needed my own machine. So in 2007 I got the highly rated 15" Mac Book Pro. It had great speed benchmarks from the tests done by Macworld magazine. PC magazine said it was the best Windows laptop you could buy, if you installed bootcamp on it. I ordered one and it was a powerhouse. I installed Parallels 4 to have Microsoft Publisher and a handful of Windows apps available. I got everything in Windows installed and froze a snapshot of the Windows OS. I would never have to troubleshoot Windows again. Skip ahead almost 4 years. I never reboot the thing. It goes for weeks on end and usually an occasional update is all that prompts a reboot. I could ramble for too long about how much work this thing has gotten done for me. From the first bus flyer to the last webpage I have made, this computer has been worth every penny. I routinely have between 6-10 windows all open. If I sigh, waiting a second for something to open, my wife laughs, "Give the thing a second! You have a hundred things all going at once." It does such a good job I wouldn't want to work on anything else.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;With the Mac Book Pro going on 4 years old now, she seems to be groaning. Her fans have gotten gummed up with some dust or something. And the hard drive seems to just sit there when I close a window. I click. It thinks for a minute. Sometimes it doesn't respond at all. It's time to think about moving on to the next machine.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;Why do I buy Apple? What possesses me to spend my hard earned money on a piece of technology? It's a tool. More than that, it's a tool I can depend on, day-in day-out. My time is worth something. I run no security software on any of our Macs; not antivirus, nothing. I have spent zero hours reinstalling the Mac OS or troubleshooting drivers. I am not a technician, I am a user. An Apple user. I don't have to &amp;nbsp;bow my knee, taking it apart trying to figure out what has gone wrong. It serves me and doesn't hesitate or ask why. It just works. A lot of Apple users say that. It just works.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;I look forward to a new machine, whenever it may come. Things will have to wait for a little bit. That's ok. I'm not the type to absolutely have to have it now. I still haven't bought an iPad. That's ok. I'll get to it. In the mean time, I have about 700 wedding RAW images to touch up, flyers to make, church tracts to update... and the kids like to play their games as well.. so don't die on me yet old girl! Hang in there a few more months. I love my Mac.&lt;/div&gt;

      <title>Editing in Adobe Camera Raw</title>

&lt;div&gt;The program is has a great feature to auto select a mask where you mouse click and perform non-destructive edits. In Aperture, an adjustment is effected and you have a lighter, sharper or whatever type of masking effect on that portion of pixels. Those pixels are changed and all you can do is UNDO or leave it. The thing I like about Camera Raw is that after you create the mask, you can slide those changes to the pixels and make different adjustments to the mask later. Even if I open the image a week later, I can go back and dial down the sharpness, saturation, brightness or whatever. It's non-destructive. I love that.&lt;/div&gt;

	&lt;p&gt;The spring Soulwinner's Revival is coming quickly and I am drafting up our flyer in Photoshop. I was thinking of a green spring-like growing color theme. I decided to try using a leafy background. But for the sake of ink-conservation, I also have a version without the leafy background. I'm still not set on the Verdana font for the body of the flyer. I'd be happy to hear what you think!&lt;/p&gt;

      <title>Setting Up Your New Verizon iPhone - Top 10 Tips and Tricks plus some bonus tips!</title>

	&lt;p&gt;I have pretty much covered syncing your iPhone and doing a back up. We also looked a bit at iTunes and App installation. So now you are using the iPhone and there are some things that may be fun and useful I'd like to share.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;1. &lt;strong&gt;Take a Picture of Your Screen&lt;/strong&gt;: You may be looking at your iPhone screen and want to save what you are seeing, be it a webpage, email or whatever. Take a picture of the screen with the iPhone's built in screen-capture. Press and hold the Home button and click the top sleep button. Your screen will flash white and a shutter sound will play. The image is saved in your Camera's roll in the Photo app. From there you can mms, email or save it for later! Bonus tip: In Safari, if you want to save a picture to your iPhone's camera roll, tap and hold on the picture and the browser will promptly ask if you'd like to save the picture!&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;2. &lt;strong&gt;Voice Command&lt;/strong&gt;: I love this feature of my iPhone and I use it a lot. I want to make a phone call but I want to just use my voice. Hold in the home button and keep holding it. Once you hear the double tone, speak into the mic on the lower part of the phone and say Call - "name". It looks up the number from your address book and makes the call. No setup or training for your voice is needed. Cool! And if there are two numbers for the address book entry, it will prompt you for home or mobile, just say "home" or "mobile" and it will call that number. Bonus tip: If you have the iPhone headphones in your ears and &lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;hold the earpiece clicker in&lt;/span&gt; and you will get the same functionality. Just speak into the earphone mic, the name you'd like to call. Also, Voice Command has commands for iPod controls!&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;3. &lt;strong&gt;Headphones /iPod Features&lt;/strong&gt;: The headphones that came with the iPhone often get dismissed as being just headphones for listening to music. But, I want to let you know that they also have a great semi-hidden feature that is very useful! I mentioned the clicker in the last tip. Well, that clicker also has other functions. If you click one time while the phone is asleep, the last track that was paused on your iPod begins to play. That's useful if you left off listening to a Podcast show and want to pick right up where you were. One click does it. Then if you want to pause, single click again it pauses the track. If you double click the little clicker it will forward to the next track on the playlist. Triple click to reverse to the previous track. These click features work with any iPhone compatible headphones, so if you're not a fan of the stock headphones you can pick up any set that is iPhone compatible and enjoy! Bonus tip: Turn on shake to shuffle. Settings &amp;gt; iPod &amp;gt; Shake to Shuffle &amp;gt; On. Then when you click the music on, if you are not happy with that track, you can just grab the phone and give it a good snap of the wrist (&lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;hold it tightly&lt;/span&gt;). The iPod will shuffle to another song!&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;4. &lt;strong&gt;Sharing Multiple Photos&lt;/strong&gt;: Tap on the Photos app. There you are in the camera roll looking at images, tap the action arrow in the bottom left corner to email, mms, etc a photo. But, maybe you'd like to share multiple photos at once. To do that cancel out of that menu and go back to the camera roll view. Tap the action button in the top right and the phone will wait for you to tap up to 5 photos to email all at once. You can tap up to 9 photos for a text MMS message. That's cool!&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;5. &lt;strong&gt;Tap to AutoFocus&lt;/strong&gt;: This is a somewhat obvious feature but I have noticed a lot of iPhone 4 pictures slightly out of focus or off exposure on the web; so I'll pass this along. When you are in the camera app taking photos, tap the screen to focus the camera on that object. Your camera will also auto adjust exposure to that area of the image. So with a little practice, you can quickly get sharp images that are properly exposed with a few taps! Check out "Camera +" by TapTapTap in the app store for a more fully featured camera app. It's a .99 cent app and worth every penny.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;6. &lt;strong&gt;Safari Scrolling&lt;/strong&gt;: This is something I'd like to see on my desktop web browser. When you are in Safari on the iPhone, if you want to scroll down you'd just flick your finger to scroll down. But to get back to the top, you don't need to scroll, scroll, scroll up. Just tap the top part of the Safari browser and the page will jump to the top!&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;7. &lt;strong&gt;Google Maps&lt;/strong&gt;: Google Maps is probably my most used app on the phone. Well you can search, tap the small blue arrow to get more info, it's very handy. But if you see a small head in an orange circle on the left side of the name, tap on that. A Google Street-view will slide down and you are looking right at the front of that address on your map. I love that feature!&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;8. &lt;strong&gt;Battery Indicator&lt;/strong&gt;: The battery life icon is normally displayed in the top right corner of your screen. It displays an ever shrinking wedge of life as you use your phone. There is more information available. Go to Settings&amp;gt; General &amp;gt; Usage. At the top of the Usage screen is a toggle for battery percentage. Now you can see a more exact percentage of how much life your iPhone has left!&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;9. &lt;strong&gt;Hidden iPod Controls&lt;/strong&gt;: Controlling the iPod can be done from the headphones as I stated earlier. But there's more. Maybe you have a track playing and you'd just like to be able with one button perform a pause or next track command. If the phone is asleep, just double tap the home button and the screen will awaken and iPod controls will appear. If your phone is already awake and in your hand, double tap the home button and slide the multitask row to the right and you'll find the same iPod controls along with an orientation screen lock. Very handy!&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;10. &lt;strong&gt;Battery Life&lt;/strong&gt;: The iPhone 4 is pretty good at holding a charge all day. You will normally need to charge it every night; even twice a day with heavy network usage.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;That's not abnormal. But I'd say the number one complaint I hear from new users of the iPhone is low battery life. Here are some things that will help if you are experiencing low battery life before you schedule a Genius Bar appointment at the Apple Store to see a technician.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;a. Turn off Wi-Fi when not using it. Settings &amp;gt; Wi-Fi &amp;gt; off. Bonus: Also turn off Ask to Join Networks. You can turn on Wi-Fi and browse the nearby networks at any time. Save the phone's battery from constantly powering up the Wi-Fi, looking and pinging any available router.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;b. Turn off Bluetooth. If you don't have a headset or sync to your vehicle, turn it off. Settings &amp;gt; General &amp;gt; Bluetooth &amp;gt; off.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;c. Turn off push email services. If you do not need up to the minute emails being downloaded to the phone, and your having an issue with low battery life, turn it off. Settings &amp;gt; Mail, Contacts and Calendar &amp;gt; Fetch New Data&amp;gt; Push &amp;gt; off. Bonus: Set your schedule at the bottom of the screen to "Manually" or hourly to really preserve the most battery life. Your phone will then only check for new mail when you tap and open the mail or on an hourly schedule.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;d. Turn off Location Services: When you have active location services on for an extended period, you will lose about 1% of battery life / minute. That's not a big deal if you are just looking up some address in the Map for a few minutes. On the other hand, if you are using your phone as a GPS on a long drive, the phone will be dead pretty quickly. Pick up a car charger and keep it plugged in while on your trip. Otherwise, if you aren't a person using GPS or mapping, turn off the Location Services. Settings &amp;gt; General &amp;gt; Locations Services &amp;gt; off.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;e. Turn down Brightness. I love the super-sharp Retina Display. But it eats battery if it's burning at 100% all day long. Save some battery by going to Settings &amp;gt; Brightness &amp;gt; Auto-Brightness &amp;gt; On and also slide the brightness down to about 60%.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;I have had my iPhone 4 come on with a 20% low battery indicator at 10 am and using these tips, I was able to make my phone last till 8pm. I made several phone calls, listened to music and even used the map a few times, so I know these tricks work!&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Bonus Battery Life Tip&lt;/strong&gt;: If you are still having battery issues and you have tried these tips, you may need to &lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;reboot the phone&lt;/span&gt;. Background multitasking pauses the apps and they may be using some CPU and memory, causing the phone to burn through the battery. Hold the top sleep button and slide the red power slider to reboot. I like to reboot about once a week to give the phone a fresh look if it's been a while or if it's behaving funny. By the way, some folks think holding the home and sleep button to force the phone into a reboot is a way to safely reboot the phone, it is not. That type of reset is a HARD reset and can cause corruptions in the OS. It is a last resort type of reset if the phone is unresponsive or locked up. To shut down the phone safely, hold sleep button and swipe to power off. Then turn it back on.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Another Bonus Battery Life Tip&lt;/strong&gt;: You may have gone app crazy on your phone, filled the OS with all kinds of stuff and you find the phone dies pretty quickly. You could benefit from a restore in iTunes. Plug in the phone to your pc and fire up iTunes. Perform a full backup per my previous post. Then, select the name of your phone in the left sidebar and on the right choose Restore. Don't do this when you are in a hurry. It may take a while, around 20-30 minutes. Once the restore is finished, choose to restore your data from last backup. If your phone locks up or fails at any time during restore, you'll need to go see your local Apple Store. They can have you up and running in no time.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p /&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Last Resort Tip&lt;/strong&gt;: Your phone froze, rebooted itself, the battery dies within the hour. You've tried everything. First, make sure you have done your backups. Then, it's time for the nuclear option. This is a full reset. Here's what you do. Hold the home button, don't let off and press the sleep button on the top until you see an Apple logo. Once you see the Apple logo, let off only the sleep button and continue holding the home button until you see the iTunes plug logo. You will have forced the phone into a reset mode. Plug in the phone into your pc and fire up iTunes. iTunes will pop up a dialogue box that your phone is sensed to be in a RESET MODE. Perform a restore per the previous tip. When the reset is done and iTunes prompts you to restore data from previous back up or set up as new phone, &lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;choose set up as new phone.&lt;/span&gt;&amp;nbsp;Essentially you have brand new software on the phone with a blank OS at that point. Setting up as a new phone will not change your cell plan or affect your bill. It just reinstalls the OS to ground zero / day one. Why not restore data? If you have had issues with the phone crashing, freezing or resetting, the issue may be in a corruption in an app or the OS and you don't want to restore that potential corruption. If you still have issues after this, you may have a hardware issue and Apple needs a visit. You did buy the Apple care, right? I highly recommend it!&lt;/div&gt;
