Our Vision for a School District Drupal Distribution

Author:

                    Rick Vugteveen

There is a great opportunity for Drupal to provide every primary school and secondary school with a cutting-edge, purpose-built CMS distribution.

The elves at ImageX Media have been working extra hard over the last few days to cram as much information and innovation as possible into our Knight News Challenge grant application.

At present, most school boards cannot afford to roll out websites for every school location, leaving the schools on their own to create complex websites that need to deliver up-to-the minute information about special programs, events and alerts.

What normally results is inequality between district schools (with most having

Writing Great Social Media Bios

Author:

                    Jodi Martens

Your goal: to promote yourself and build your personal and professional brand online. You’ve joined Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn – and, just to cover your bases, YouTube, Flickr, Posterous and Foursquare, not to mention your blog. But just being on these sites isn’t enough to turn you into an online sensation overnight. Like anything worth having, it requires some work on your part – and the best place to start is with your bio.

Your social media bio is a critical component of your personal branding toolbox. It’s the first thing people will read to find out if they should follow you, friend you or do business with you.

According to Hubspot, almost two-thirds of Twitter users don’t have bios on their profiles.

Creating a Basic Feature for OpenAtrium

Author:

                    Phillip Lamb

In my previous post I explained how to get up and running with OpenAtrium. Once you’ve done that you’re ready for the next step – creating a basic feature.

Features is one of the cooler contrib modules I’ve seen in a while. It probably ranks just below MenuTrails on my list of totally awesome modules. Features allows you to create what are in effect mini-modules which contain code to import CCK types and fields, views, imagecache preferences, blocks, panels settings – pretty much anything that has an export/import function.

Images:

Design on the Go: Best Practices for Mobile Sites

Author:

                    Alex J. Ventpap

Being able to design for mobile devices is a skill that is becoming more and more crucial for any web designer. Gone are the days when having a website for a company or organization is good enough – increasingly, people are looking for information while on the go, and designing for those tiny screens is a whole new ball game. Designing for mobile devices has a different set of rules than designing for the web – and in order to keep up with the way the market is going, you’ve got to be able to do both well.

According to mobithinking.com, 2008 is considered the beginning of the mobile boom, which is now in full force. “Mobile is not a niche – but it’s still seen as a niche play by too many brands. With anywhere from 3.5 to 4 billion mobile phone users, you’re missing a prime opportunity if you’re not using the mobile web to strengthen relationships with your present and prospective customers when they’re on the move.”

h3.

Images:

A few weeks ago I was tasked with developing an Intranet for a client of ours. We decided to set them up with an instance of OpenAtrium, a Drupal project from the guys over at Development Seed.
With every year that passes, the blogosphere gains momentum – becoming the main source of news and information for more and more people – including your customers, members and/or donors. This, of course, begs the question: should your company or organization have a blog? As tempting – or terrifying – as it might be to jump on the blog bandwagon, it’s a decision that requires some careful thought and planning. Just as blogging isn’t for every person, it’s also not for every company or organization. Is it the right thing for yours? Let’s have a look at some key questions you need to ask before you make that decision.

A State-of-the-Art Website for State-of-the-Art Products

Inproheat Industries Ltd. needed a state-of-the-art website to show off their state-of-the-art products. For 50 years, Inproheat has been designing and manufacturing energy systems and engineered materials for the foundry, mining and manufacturing sectors. Their goal with this site was to increase the profile, visibility and sales of their equipment as well as to built on the company’s strong image and reputation.

After an initial usability survey, ImageX Media built Inproheat a website that would showcase their company to the fullest. An online database highlights equipment and services, educating potential buyers about Inproheat’s products. A mineral price feed of real-time stock market prices is featured on the home page. And news updates, location maps, and online forms are all easy-to-use to enhance the online experience for site visitors. We even developed a wiki-like integrated private intranet system to help Inproheat run smoothly inside and out.
