2Mbps internet connection over LED

LED data transmission used to be all the rage — we fondly remember beaming Palm Pilot contacts via IrDA. Then we got omni-directional Bluetooth and building-penetrating WiFi, and put all that caveman stuff behind us. But now, scientists the world over are looking to bring back line-of-sight networking, and the latest demonstration has Chinese researchers streaming video to a laptop with naught but ceiling-mounted blue LEDs. The Chinese Academy of Sciences claims to have realized a 2Mbit per second internet connection that transmits data simply by modulating the flicker of the little diodes, and imperceptibly enough to have them serve as room lighting as well. Like Boston University before them, the Chinese scholars see short-range LED networks controlling smart appliances. It’s not quite the gigabit speed you’d get from laser diodes, but this way you’ll get more mileage out of those expensive new bulbs, eh?

Nice short-documentary by Takayuki Akachi, in which a camera observes a girl travelling over 50 countries, ‘zooming in’ on the pair of Levis jeans she is wearing. Showing the way the fabrics change over time, the fading colors, the wastage, the experiences it’s learning, the wisdom it’s gathering. And more in general the diversity of people and nature all over the world.

I recently found out about We Were Promised Jetpacks, a four-piece rock band, formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2003 by high school friends Adam Thompson (Guitar/Vocals), Michael Palmer (Guitar), Sean Smith (Bass) and Darren Lackie (Drums). They are currently signed to Fat Cat Records, with whom they released their debut album, These Four Walls, in June 2009. Check out the video after the break.

Diaspora wants to be your privacy-conscious social network

Nowadays it isn’t a secret anymore that, when you sign-up for a Facebook account, you’ll sell your soul to Mark Zuckerberg* and you basically can wave your privacy a very-well.
Yes, Facebook is evil, very evil. But like in all times of distress there always will be a Robin Hood who’ll stand-up against these kinds of evilness.

This time the Robin Hood comes in the form of Maxwell, Raphael, Daniel, Ilya and the four-man social networking start-up known as Diaspora. The guiding principle behind Diaspora is simple: you can share information with your friends without losing control of that information. Diaspora will be an open source, social networking platform that allows users to host their own data node, giving the node owner complete and total control over the data he/she is sharing.

*Yes Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook who we recently found out about that he called Facebook-users “Fucking idiots” for thrusting him, that Zuckerberg.

Found this via Gizmodo. No it’s not the best and coolest designer appartment, but is has a freakin’ 256 foot water slide from the balcony down to the pool, and it’s available for rent in Koh Samui, Thailand.

Got to get me one of these!

Music on Friday: As Long As It Takes by Isbells

After 15 years of playing, making and recording music with several rockbands (Soon, Ellroy,…) Gaëtan Vandewoude felt the time was right to start creating his very own songs. Mostly writing & recording during nighttime, in a shabby old stable, this resulted in a collection of introspective yet observing songs, inspired by his immediate surroundings. Somewhere in that proces a band was formed with Naima Joris, Bart Borremans and Gianni Marzo, allowing each one of them to give their own colour & contribution to the music.
