12.09.2013 Hospital La Pitié-Salpétrière goes live with MetaVision in additional units

Hôpital La Pitié-Salpétrière in Paris, France went live with MetaVision in its Neurosurgery ICU, Medical ICU – Montyon and Hepatology-Gastrology ICU. MetaVision has been successfully installed in the hospital’s ICU and OR since December 2008. Hôpital La Pitié-Salpétrière is part of l’Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris, the largest university hospital in Europe.
A pilot study done in the Multidisciplinary ICU and the Vascular Surgery Operating room of Hôpital La Pitié-Salpétrière in Paris, France published in 2010 as an abstract measured the effect of implementing MetaVision on length of stay and mortality, and reported encouraging results: length of stay in intensive care was shortened by 2 days, and mortality was decreased from 17% to 14.5%. The study discusses the advantages of MetaVision’s customizability and clinical decision support, which enable optimization of patient care, and which may explain the reduction in duration of patients' stay in the ICU. A more comprehensive study is in process in order to confirm these results.

Benefits already achieved in Queensland, where the system is being rolled out statewide, include workflow improvements, legibility in clinical notes and increased patient safety. Having a statewide rollout means that even that smaller hospitals without extensive IT resources can use MetaVision, and that pharmacopoeias are standardized across the state, which is particularly important for pediatric intensive care.

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Health, Katy Gallagher, states, "The Canberra Hospital ICU has been using the MetaVision system for approximately 2.5 years, and now that Calvary Hospital is online, it means that when a patient is transferred between the two ICUs the treating team has timely access to the patient's treatment information provided from the other hospital. This continues the process of introducing common systems across ACT public hospitals, to the benefit of patients and clinicians. The use of common systems also enhances the networking of services across the Territory."

3.07.2013 MGH develops decision support systems for resident operating room assignments using MetaVision

With the goal of making residents more involved with meeting their educational needs, Massachusetts General Hospital developed a program where residents choose their preferred OR case assignments. The system creates resident profiles, based on MetaVision records and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) case logs, to facilitate attending review of case experience. MGH also developed an ACGME case-log visualization tool in order to easily compare each resident’s experience to both case minimums and peer group averages. The study found that these decision support systems successfully distributed responsibility between residents and attending for creating appropriate assignments.

7.05.2012 The Johns Hopkins Hospital study shows MetaVision may be used to optimize blood product usage

A new academic study done by The Johns Hopkins Hospital concludes that data provided by MetaVision can help optimize blood management, and has the potential to “enhance patient safety, reduce costs, and conserve blood, a valuable and scarce resource.” An analysis of data acquired by MetaVision revealed significant variation in blood usage among surgical services and surgical procedures, and among individual anesthesiologists and surgeons. This data may be used for standardizing transfusion practices and as the basis of a quality improvement program. Additionally, these findings can be used to predict intraoperative requirements, preventing the costly mistake of ordering more blood products than necessary (Anesthesiology, Apr 23 2012 [Epub ahead of print]).
