Having looked more closely, you’re right – I had always seen MusicBrainz primarily as a music fingerprinting effort (perhaps because that was it’s ‘unique’ feature) but, as you point out, it is mainly for building a free and public collection of music metadata. I’ve just always seen finger printing in conjunction with one of these data stores as the holy grail for sorting out my MP3 collection. I’ve been regularly trying MusicBrainz offerings and third party applications that use MusicBrianz to identify my unknown tracks and never had much luck. Yesterday, when I tried Shazam and it identified almost every track I threw at it via a speaker and iPhone microphone I was amazed – I can’t wait until Shazam, MusicBrainz or Last.fm bring that kind of identification to the desktop and I can finally find out what some of these tracks are.

I think you’re missing MusicBrainz purpose (and also mixing up the MusicBrainz database and MusicBrainz Picard – its companion tagger tool).
MusicBrainz purpose is to build a FREE music database, just like Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia.

Good to hear you got a job, I’m guessing because of your work on CS. I will say that a lot of the original users of CS have stopped using it since it sort of stopped growing and you and Lee were no where to be found. That said, when you do start implementing no features or updating it, perhaps sending an e-mail to all registered users to say “Hey, CS is back” might bring back those who tried it but thought it was dead or unused.
