A mobile phone also called mobile, cellphone or handphone is an electronic device used for mobile telecommunications over a cellular network of base stations known as cell sites. Mobile phones differ from cordless telephones, which only offer telephone service within limited range through a single base station attached to a fixed line, for example within a home or an office. Low-end mobile phones are often referred to as feature phones, whereas high-end mobile phones that offer more advanced computing ability are referred to as smartphones.

A mobile phone allows its user to make and receive telephone calls to and from the public telephone network which includes other mobiles and fixed line phones across the world. It does this by connecting to a cellular network owned by a mobile network operator. A key feature of the cellular network is that it enables seamless telephone calls even when the user is moving around wide areas via a process known as handoff or handover.

In addition to being a telephone, modern mobile phones also support many additional services, and accessories, such as SMS (or text) messages, email, Internet access, gaming, Bluetooth, infrared, camera, MMS messaging, MP3 player, radio and GPS.

The first hand held phone was demonstrated by Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973, using a handset weighing in at two kilos. By the end of 2009, the number of mobile cellular subscriptions worldwide reached approximately 4.6 billion, penetrating the developing economies and reaching the bottom of the economic pyramid.

Although the world's leading cell phone manufacturer has already pushed out a few touchscreen handsets, it's touch-sensitive portfolio remains relatively tiny, compared to that of some other companies, say Samsung. For good or bad, in this review we'll be looking at a new non-touch phone from Nokia - the 6700 slide. Our journey won't be boring though, as the Nokia 6700 slide is a smartphone, running the Symbian S60 3rd Edition operating system. Not only that, but it's also really pretty, has very good build quality and owns a 5MP AF camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar optics. So, let's not waste any more time and get down to business.

Most of the Nokia 6700 slide's body is made of aluminum, giving it a solid and high-quality feel. In addition, Nokia has come up with a beautiful design, which looks incredibly stylish. Well, at least our silver color variant is stylish, but the Nokia 6700 slide also comes in many other colors, including red, green and blue, which look somewhat more youthful. The in-hand feel of the phone is what it's meant to be - superb, while the sliding mechanism works flawlessly.

The display on the Nokia 6700 slide measures 2.2 inches and has a resolution of 240x320 pixels, which is more than enough for the size. It has a light sensor for automatic brightness handling that we found to work okay. Still, when outdoors you'll have to shield the screen with your hand in order to get a clear view of what's going on.

The keys below the display are nice to use, including the two circular buttons for "home" and "delete" that give the phone a kind of retro appearance. Although a bit on the smaller side, the numpad is well-made and won't give you headaches. Its keys have a well-pronounced click, which makes it easy to feel when you've pressed them.

Surprisingly, there is no volume rocker on the Nokia 6700 slide. On the right side you'll find the two-step camera shutter, the second step of which could work better, and on the top are the 2.5mm headset jack, Nokia charging port and a wisely-hidden standard microUSB port.

A design element that is worth mentioning is that if you want to remove the aluminum back cover, you'll first have to open the microUSB and then press a key that releases the battery door. Although it's a rather unconventional solution, we can't help but admit we like it, as it is a nice touch that gives the phone even more sense of classiness.

The back side lets you look at its pleasant-to-the-eye 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar optics and dual-LED flash.

They shall come in wave upon wave. Or so it seemed in the beginning. Samsung certainly wanted a strong start for their own Bada OS and they had it. It is usual for sequels to be questioned and belittled. That's one thing the Wave II doesn't have to worry about. It's bigger and heavier than the original.

When the second gen phone has a familiar sounding model name with an actual ordinal number in it that doesn't mean a complete lack of imagination. It's a way to promote continuity. The Wave II has this base covered too, it's nearly the same phone as the first Wave but presumably upgraded to reach to a more high-end market segment. Yep, we know, it's not a great update. Plus the first three differences over the original Wave are about to be washed away once it receives its due software update to Bada OS 1.2.

The Samsung S8530 Wave II may not be the upgrade that all users have been waiting for, but the phone runs the latest version of the Bada OS and has kept all the great features of the original: from the powerful CPU, to premium connectivity and HD video recording.

And all this is delivered on a larger 3.7-inch display. Sure, it?s no SuperAMOLED screen but Samsung promises the LCD screen is not your ordinary screen, too. You see, good things come in limited number and Samsung is pressed to supply enough SuperAMOLEDs for their Android and Windows Phone 7 operations.

Bad luck for the Wave II, we guess. Even worse for the original Wave this phone will be as good as discontinued when the stocks run out. The Wave II will take over and that's that.

Anyway, Samsung are probably not giving up on their Bada OS. If it eventually becomes the base platform for all their midrange touch phones, they will be extremely well positioned to adapt to the new market reality.

It's not about the business benefits or the multitasking, it's as simple as apps. Users love to have them and makers love to sell them. Imagine being able to do that on all levels, from the most basic feature phones to the top-of-the-line smart devices. That must be enough reason for Samsung to keep their commitment to Bada.

We don't review often software, but the Zune desktop software was almost inevitable, in this case is an integral part of Windows phone 7 experience. Since we already have a few AP7 phone reviews under our belt, we decided it was time we saw in the role your computer owned by a Windows phone 7 mobile plays.

Sony Ericsson LiveView™ micro display for Android™ phones

Sony Ericsson announces the Sony Ericsson LiveView accessory. It is a micro display accessory with a remote control functionality. Sony Ericsson LiveView uses Bluetooth connectivity to wirelessly pair up to a compatible handset. LiveView features a 128x128 pixel, 1.3 inch organic LED (OLED) display with four touch areas. LiveView is compatible with Bluetooth 2.1 technology. The Sony Ericsson LiveView will be available in selected markets from Q4, 2010.

To make your Android applications work with the Sony Ericsson LiveView, you have to create a LiveView plugin to your application. For this, an easy-to-use SDK will be announced on the Developer World web site shortly. Once your application or new version of your existing application is ready, you simply upload it to Android Market. Users can then download it, as with any application. To find LiveView enabled applications, Sony Ericsson have developed the LiveWare Manager application. It will scan Android Market for LiveView enabled applications and present them to the user. The LiveWare manager will itself be available from Android Market.

TXTBlocker a new texting blocking service that stop your kids texting while driving

TXTBlocker is a software and online service combo which locks off a registered mobile phone from making or receiving text messages or calls while in a car. It uses cell and GPS data to determine location and speed and decide whether the phone is actually in a car, and once it thinks it is, boom, the service is automatically limited.

TXTBlocker allows parents, employers and others to safely end the dangerous habit of texting while driving. Cell phone owners simply log in to this site and customize settings to control when, where and how their cell phones can be used.

You can use TXTBlocker's GPS technology to disable or limit cell phone functions in your own "safe zones" like schools or workplaces.

TXTBlocker works automatically, so you never have to remember to turn it on, and it allows for safety features so that phones can always make calls to 911 and send or receive calls with preset "safe list" numbers.

It doesn’t jam the phone in the traditional sense, so the subscriber can use the online dashboard to set up a whitelist of emergency numbers to keep open, which is reassuring. myPANTONE App puts color library in iPhones

The release of a new iPhone App is sure to please graphic designers, decorators and artists who work with Pantone colors. Pantone has been the industry standard in color for many years, but carrying around a Pantone book full of color palettes hasn’t always been practical. And they’re expensive books to lose, too. Pantone LLC has launched myPANTONE, a digital app for iPhones that gives designers more flexibility when choosing and working with Pantone palettes.

“myPANTONE marries the power of the iPhone with the inspiration of Pantone Color Palettes, enabling designers to be creative whenever inspiration strikes them,” said Andy Hatkoff, vice president of technology licensing for Pantone. “Providing a digital, portable design studio and essential color tools at their fingertips, myPANTONE gives designers the freedom to access Pantone Colors anywhere, without the need to be in their office or carry around cumbersome guides.”

Hatkoff said with myPANTONE’s Portable Color Memory, designers no longer need to struggle to recall an exact color.

myPANTONE gives designers access to all the Pantone Color Libraries, including the Pantone Matching System (PMS) for coated, uncoated and matte stock; the Pantone Goe System for coated and uncoated stock; Pantone Pastels for coated and uncoated stock; and the Pantone Fashion + Home Smart Color System. The application lets designers create harmonious color palettes by finding complementary, analogous and triadic combinations for selected colors.

Hatkoff said myPANTONE uses the iPhone’s built-in camera to allow designers to capture whatever inspires them – from architecture and street scenes to fashion and nature. Colors can be extracted from any photo on the iPhone and then matched to the closest Pantone colors.

The beauty of a digital version of the Pantone palettes is that once they’re created, users can share their color choices and combinations with other iPhone users and automatically post notification of new palettes to Facebook and Twitter, attaching text notes and voice annotations to palettes when posting.

Designers with impatient clients can email their color choices to clients as color patches, or as application-ready swatch files for use in design applications including Adobe Creative Suite, CorelDraw and QuarkXPress.

Sharing with other designers is easy using the Pantone-hosted Website.

Each color swatch in myPANTONE includes sRGB, HTML and L*a*b* values. Additionally, myPANTONE makes cross-referencing color capabilities simple for users to find similar colors among the various Pantone Color Libraries.

Samsung Launches the Slimline Lucido Handset

Not quite as eye-catching as the recently-announced Tocco Ultra Edition, the Samsung Lucido offers many of the features, but with a more traditional look. And quite probably for less of an outlay.

Lucido means 'sleek' in Italian and in terms of a traditional candybar phone, it's no bad looker, with some 'premium metal' detailing thrown into that slimline body for a slight touch of bling. Indeed it is slim, just 11.8 mm thick says Samsung.

But those looks means nothing if the Lucido doesn't cut it with the features. Thankfully it does with a 2.2-inch AMOLED screen, a-GPS (using Google Maps), high-speed HSDPA connectivity for speedy browsing, media player, FM radio, up to 8GB of storage and a more than decent 5 megapixel camera with anti-blur, face detection and smile capture.

Look out for it in April on various networks, price depending on that contract.
