In my free course of ways to make money online, blogging is a major part of creating an online business but for new bloggers I have seen that there are so many myths circulating around them that at times they don’t even try blogging as an option. So let me debunk 20 ultimate blogging myths that most new bloggers come across.

This article is quite long with over 4000 words and you may not have the time to go through the entire article now and so you can just read few myths for now and feel free to bookmark it or print it out for later.

Myth 1: Need to post every day

This is the biggest myth that any new blogger has when starting to blog. Back in 2004 I also had similar myth and that was one of the reason I opted for forums and not blog because I thought I would not be able to post every day that blog needs me to be doing.

The myth is injected to us when we observe few of the top bloggers in any niche where we see that they publish new content almost daily and then we think that every blog needs to post every day.

The truth is you can publish at your own pace and still have a fairly successful blog. The important aspect of blogging is not about getting a post out everyday but getting a post out when you think you have something new and interesting for your readers. I prefer to maintain no time line for both my blogs and when I have something really interesting I share it with my readers. Reader get the feeling that when Shabbir writes anything it will always be something useful and not write for the sake of it.

Myth 2: Blogging needs lot of time

Many new bloggers tend to avoid blogging because they think that it will take hell lot of time maintaining the blog and they will not be able to provide the needed time to get it going. At first I thought they are referring to time needed to write the content but then I realized that they are referring to the blog maintenance time and not referring to the time needed to write content. They were referring to tasks like managing the comments, replying to comments, building links to content and other such maintenance tasks that are part of being a blogger.

The fact is you can always do away with those tasks. If you think comments will take lot of your time, you can have a blog without comments. Seth Godin does not allow comments on his blog for similar reasons. If you think you will have hard time building links to your blog, just avoid that part. Let the natural links build for your blog. Any tasks that you think will take majority of your time, just avoid that task to start off. Just focus on building content for your blog and other things can be taken up at some other point of time.

Myth 3: Blogging is not an online business

I am sure blogging not as an online business comes as myth is a surprise to some but at times I get so many questions where people ask me how can a site that does not sale anything can make money online. I have to explain them an answer with an example that they understand. I help them understand that sites without selling anything to their readers can also be an online business just like TV Channels where channel itself is not selling anything to their viewers and still they are a business. Similarly blogs may not sell anything to the readers directly but sell advertising to the advertisers and earn money to become an online business.

Apart from ad revenue, blogging opens up many other moneymaking opportunities like affiliate marketing, digital product sales, membership programs and many others.

Myth 4: I Can’t Blog

This is the most used reason for not starting a blog. People just think that they cannot blog without ever trying to write or blog. One of the reason why people think that they will not be able to blog is, they think their English is not very good. Actually my English was horrible when I started in 2004 and I still think that it is not as good as I want it to be for writing blogs and eBooks but the only way to improve my English is to blog more and more. It will be really tough for me to compete on English grounds with people from the west as their first choice of language is English but then I am fine with it as well.

The other reason people say they cannot blog is thinking that people will leave negative comments about their blog. This is something that should be taken as positive aspect because if your readers are pointing your mistakes out, you can improve very easily on the way you should be writing. Isn’t it?

Others think that someone would write bad things about their blog on other sites but I am yet to see anyone writing about your blog’s feedback on someone else’s blog saying how horrible blogger’s English is. At times people make a fool of themselves like here and you cannot do anything but sit and laugh on it, still I did not reveal the identity of the person as that was not the whole point.

Myth 5: Blogging is Get Rich Quick

Blogging is not something that can make you rich quickly but there is a myth among new bloggers that having the blog online will start driving money to their bank accounts almost instantly. This has never happened and this will never happen. There are tons of websites that sells turnkey blogging solutions and all I can say is beware of those turnkey blogging solutions. If they would have worked just out of the box without you doing anything, they should have been used by the creator himself/herself and there should not be any reason for selling it to you for any amount whatsoever.

Blogging takes time and evergreen content that you should be writing from time to time which will become the pillar of your blog. This one article that you are reading right now took me almost 3 weeks to complete it.

Myth 6: Everything for A Blog is Free

Blog needs lot of time but that is not the only thing that a blog needs. It also needs money from your pocket to keep growing. I am not talking about the expense to buy a domain and hosting, as they are very small part of the overall expense. Blog needs money for unique design, a logo, may be even need to hire writers to get some good quality content upfront along with your content, Auto-responders to convert blog visitors to readers, and many more…

This myth originates because WordPress or Blogger or any other blogging platform are free to get you started and this makes new bloggers think that blog needs no investment whatsoever. Yes you can always test blogging without investment but to keep growing your blog, you need to be ready to devote time to it as well as money.

Myth 7: Blogging is Easy

A very common assumption among bloggers is that all we need to do is get the blog online and we are done with it. It should start generating traffic from Google, will have tons of readers, name, fame and money but that is not how things work. I get lot of emails with questions on why Google is not sending me traffic or why Google has not indexed my site (BTW Google not indexing your site question is answered here in detail) and as soon as I visit the site I know for sure that Google should not be indexing those site and once Google even index it, there is no reason for that site to be ranking anywhere. They have no content whatsoever and whatever little content they have, it is either copied from some other site or is just couple of articles that they have just written with tough keyword competition and want that they should be ranking for those keywords.

Let me share with you an example. Once I got such email and as I visited the blog was about entertainment and fun. The site had celebrity images as well as other funny cartoons related content that was found on thousands of other sites. On top of that the site had hundred of things in the sidebar to get people away from the site. This is not all and they also had 4 or 5 banner ads and couple of popups. Guess what – The question to me was how can I get approved in Adsense. I have been rejected thrice in Adsense and though I have almost 5000 unique visitors monthly on my site.

The blogger was able to drive some traffic to the site but then the quality of the site was horrible and also has not done the homework that Adsense approves site based on quality of content and not on quantity of visitors. So if you think blogging is easy, you need to rethink about it. You have to work hard to get your blog off the ground.

Myth 8: Blogging is Tough

We just saw that blogging is not easy but do you think blogging is tough? No I don’t think so. All you have to do is make a habit of blogging and producing good quality content for your blog and if you think it is tough then blogging is really not for you but then for those who like to read books and new things online, blogging should be something that comes naturally to them because you always want to have your opinion on something you read.

If you take the example of this very article that you are reading, I am sure there are others bloggers who have similar articles on their blog about blogging myths but that does not mean I cannot have myths based on my blog readers questions and my experience. Isn’t it?

Myth 9: Blogging is For Experts

Many readers consider that they don’t know the subject well enough to be blogging. If you have keen interest in any subject, you don’t need to be an expert to be blogging on it. If you have interest in the niche or subject, you will not run out of topics for your blog and this is the whole point of blogging. Sharing your views and ideas on the topic.

Let me share with you the example of IMTips. I am not an expert in online marketing and I follow some of the great bloggers in the niche (list here) but as I experiment new ways to internet marketing for my web properties, I share them here and this is the only reason I associate with the success of yet another internet marketing (or make money online) blog i.e. ability to produce unique content from different perspective worth reading. You have been reading this article almost 2000 word from top and still have not lost interest. Isn’t it?

Myth 10: Can Blog On Anything

More often than not blogging starts by reading other blogs about blogging, Internet marketing or how to make money online blogs. In the process of gaining knowledge from blogs, you are overloaded with so much information that it becomes really very difficult to decide on the niche of your blog and this is where most people get trapped in the myth that they can blog on anything. People start to think that their choice of niche is not as attractive as may be internet marketing or blogging and so instead of blogging in niche of their choice, they are pulled towards Make Money Online and Internet Marketing niche with the assumption that in Make Money Online niche they can learn blogging as well as make lot more money with affiliate marketing. Soon reality kicks in and the quality of the content never reaches certain level to attract readers and make anything from that blog.

Your blog niche should be something where you can generate lot of content over a period of time.

Myth 11: Need to exchange (or Buy) links on other blogs

When staring out with blogging, people think that Internet Marketing or Search Engine optimization is all about buying and exchanging links but this is completely a myth. I have neither exchanged links for any of my sites nor have purchased links. Internet marketing is more about having a right kind of strategy to getting your site in front of your readers such that they will become regular visitor to your site or blog. Search Engine Optimization according to me is all about making your site users friendly following the search engine guidelines for webmasters. If you have to do something only for search engines, then it is not something I prefer for SEO but if it is something that will help search engines as well as humans, I always get it done and I think this is working really well for me for years.

Let me share with you an example of link exchange from 2005ish kind of time frame. Almost every Webmaster used to exchange links and I used to get so many link exchange requests as well. If the link to my site was being placed from links page, I always used to reject for one simple reason that the site does not have the kind of traffic that people will visit those links pages and then visit my site.

Does this mean I did not get links to my site? I used to get lot more links by focusing on content that is unique and drives me lot of links from authority sites over a period of time. If some of my content did not get the links that I think it deserves, I used to email webmaster that you have content where I think my article can be complementary to your readers and this help me build links to my content naturally. This is really tough way to be getting links but then it is more of long-term play. If you want, you can read about my link building strategies that works for me.

Myth 12: Blog Needs Huge Traffic to be Successful

Traffic is lifeline of any blog but that does not mean you need huge amount of traffic to be a successful blogger. Let me yet again take example of IMTips to show you how only few people visiting your blog is good enough to be successful as well as make decent amount of money.

I have shared an article on Optimizing vBulletin Forums. It is not the most read article on my blog but still it pays me the most. If you look at the last point in the article, it says – “If you still have issues with your server ideally you should hire me” and hire me is linked to my Elance profile. People hire me to get their forum optimization done.

Check out some of my recent jobs done in Elance.

I am making $1000+ per month with each job averaging $500+ per month.

Now imagine the traffic to article on vBulletin here on my blog doubles, triples or even quadruples? Will I be able to make double, triple or quadruple amount of what I am making right now. May be not because I have lot of other areas to look into like my forums, blogs as well as partnerships and joint ventures. So either I have to reject those incremental tasks or may be look for other alternatives like outsourcing. With outsourcing even if I keep 50% of profit and if I get twice as much tasks as I am getting now. I will still be making the same amount.

So it is a myth that you make lot more money when your site has more traffic. The incremental traffic does not make you the same incremental money but I know there can be lot of arguments especially on couple of things.

First argument can be to make more money with advertising or making more sales with affiliate marketing with increase in traffic. Advertising revenues have always been on the decline because advertisers are spending their money wisely by paying lesser and lesser eCPM to publishers. So an increase in traffic may not always mean increase in advertising revenue. With affiliate marketing, making more sales means you have to constantly work on generating more content that makes your readers interested in purchasing products you are promoting. At times it does not happen like for example if you are an affiliate of selling insurance products and if you are able to get more traffic but then the incremental traffic may not always be interested in buying insurance products but it could be that they are just interested in knowing about insurance as a whole.

Second argument could be that your blog is related to web development, which helps in freelancing jobs but what if blog is not related to what people are looking for as a service. Bloggers can always provide writing service in the niche of the blog. Let us take an example of Physics as a niche of a blog. There are few physics writers available online as freelancers, so a blog which has good content on Physics can always acquire clients for providing content writing services. Yes it could be that the number of clients may be low but over a period of time it may have lot of regular clients compared to vBulletin or server optimization because webmasters don’t require optimizations services too often.

Blog may not make you money directly but it can create opportunities for you.

Myth 13: Need to Write for Google

On Jan 26th 2013, I revamped Go4Expert urls completely. Change in URls was needed because I was using Go4Expert.com/forums even for articles and I wanted to move things to go4Expert.com/articles and have forums in Go4Expert.com/forums which meant that I will have an impact in Google but it will helps my users understand the site structure easily. I did the change and expected Google traffic to decline and soon I saw the impact. After couple of months Google indexed all the new urls but the site traffic did not reach a point where it was before change in URLs and so I contacted Google about the same and here is what I get from them in response.

So you should be doing things that will help your users and search engines will follow. In the above example I did things that helps my user as per search engine guidelines. Google suggests that if you change urls, redirect old content to new content using a permanent redirect. For users either temporary or permanent redirect will do but for search engines you should be using permanent redirect only and so I did a permanent redirect from old urls to new urls so it cover both the search engines and users. So for my old article links were

http://www.go4expert.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29601

Which redirects to the new link

http://www.go4expert.com/articles/stop-vbulletin-spam-registration-t29601/

Myth 14: I need to be an SEO expert to be a successful blogger

I remember a famous quote by Albert Einstein

Everybody is a genius. But, if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it’ll spend its whole life believing that it is stupid.

I loved C++ when I started Go4Expert. As I shared my content, I started to read lot of books and online content on how to make my content more reachable in Google. I had no idea what it was called then and slowly but surely understood SEO. I made notes of things that I should be doing to help reach more people in Google and I am damn sure this is story of majority of online blogs and forums. You can always learn SEO as you move along.

Bloggers can become better in SEO over time but the reverse may not always be true.

Myth 15: My customers aren’t blog readers

My customers aren’t blog readers or my customers will not prefer a blog on my site is yet another myth among many webmasters. I don’t see a reason why your customers will not prefer extra content on your site. Yes the chronological date wise looking repository of articles may not be preferred on some websites but you can always use <del datetime="2013-05-05T12:58:32+00:00">blog</del> WordPress as category wise article repository to drive traffic to your site or you can also use WordPress to answer some of the common questions that your readers may have to before they become your customer.

Let us take an example of a website about selling pet food. Ideal customers are people looking to buy pet food and the main keywords will be buy dog foods or buy dog food online, buy cat foods or buy cat food online. These keywords should be targeted in the product description pages. Argument that ideal customer for the site may not be blog readers is also valid in the above scenario but what if you can organize a blog which answers all the questions that pet owners may have. The blog will not only act as a source of traffic to your product sales pages but can also act as list building platform for email marketing. A list of a pet owner is a gold mine for site selling pet foods. Isn’t it?

Myth 16: Creating many sites in same niche helps

No having more sites in same niche does not help by any means. Having more than couple of sites in same niche is not something that I prefer. Even in different niche if you have too many sites, you will find it very difficult to keep them updated and so it is always better to be having fewer sites that are being updated rather then having hundreds of dead sites an exception could be if you have a team of content writers or webmasters that can help you manage and keep lively too many sites.

Myth 17: My Readers Will not Buy what I Sell

Bloggers aren’t sure if readers will want to buy anything from bloggers. The answer to the myth is if you provide quality content on your blog for readers it helps you build trust and once readers trust the bloggers about the quality there is no reason for not buying what blogger may offer.

Take an example of my Technical Analysis Blog. Indians buying an eBook from a non-financial background blogger is something that I could never ever imagine even in my dreams in 2011. The reality is readers have not only purchased my eBook but many readers have also referred their friends to me for buying the eBook.

I always focused on building trust and helping my blog readers with any question they have and over a period of time when I became a trusted and unbiased source of information for helping people to trade in market, people not only started getting in touch with me to learn how to trade in market but also wanted more from me and this became the inspiration for eBook.

Blogging is not about money; it is about building trust of your readers.

Myth 18: Blog post should be lengthy

or

Myth 19: Blog post should be short as no one reads long posts

The length of blog posts or word count is the least thing that matters. The only thing that matter is the quality of your content. See my post on How to know if you are an entrepreneur. It is under 100 words and this article is over 4000 words. The length of the post should be as much as you think will be good enough to add value to readers as well as keep them interested.

Seth Godin’s Blog has lot of shorter posts where as Steve Pavlina has some monster articles that are even converted into eBooks by many webmasters. Both have their own style of writing and both are very very successful.

If you are one of those who think no one reads long posts, you are proving yourself wrong by reading this article. If you think short posts don’t work, read Seth Godin’s Blog.

Myth 20: Turnkey Blogging Solutions

Last but by no means the least is people still search for turnkey blogging solutions. There are so many sites online that advertise about such products and hundreds of people are being trapped daily. For those who don’t understand turnkey blogging solution is something where all you need to do is get the key to a niche blog and switch it on to be the next millionaire. It never works.

If you are using vBBlog and vBSEO like I had, you should plan Xenforo move with cautions of redirecting old forum as well as blog urls to new urls. Read my experience to help you plan your move better.

I have given up on vBulletin (Read why here) and have just converted my MBA Forum from vBulletin to Xenforo. Though the move was a breeze I think I should share the steps here once again for others who may want to plan their move from vBulletin to Xenforo.

I am not a fan of using too many plugins but still I was using

vBSEO

vBBlog the official vBulletin 3.x blog

So let me share my experiences of moving both to Xenforo and how I managed to get them moved into Xenforo.

vBSEO Urls for forums and threads

As I tested Xenforo I was sure that I couldn’t have the same forum urls as vBSEO (for my forums and sub forums at least) because vBulletin does not have any requirements for category based urls but Xenforo needs one. So all your forum urls will have /forums in the url and all your threads urls will have /threads in the url. Though the string ‘/forums’ and ‘/threads’ is customizable using an add-on, it is something that you remove completely.

So my old forum url

http://www.mbaguys.net/project-reports/

will become

http://www.mbaguys.net/forums/project-reports/

And as my urls are not based on forum ids, the redirection rule has to be manually for each url. So in htaccess I added following couple of lines for each category, forum and sub forum.

Redirect 301 /project-reports http://www.mbaguys.net/forums/project-reports/
RewriteRule ^project-reports/index([0-9]+).html /forums/project-reports/page-$1 [L,R=301]

The paged navigation in my case had index<PageNumber>.html format and if you have different format, you have to change that accordingly as well.

For threads I was using /t<threadid> kind of url and so the redirection for this can be handled using the vBulletin redirection plugin for Xenforo as well as xfseo htaccess rules for vBSEO. For your vBSEO urls you can get the htaccess rules from Geekpoint and then adding the redirection add-on to Xenforo.

The Plan for vBBlog …

Once I was certain that my urls will be properly redirected, I was comfortable moving to Xenforo but then I had vBulletin blog as well and as vBulletin blog did not had right spam prevention options, I just turned posting permissions off in blogs because it was just not possible to deal with spam on vBBlog but then I had some really good archive of blogs which attracted good traffic and I did not want to loose them.

Posts like Why MBA After Engineering had urls like this

http://www.mbaguys.net/blogs/sidgoyal/why-mba-after-engineering-graduation-182/

So my plan to move out of vBulletin made me to also use Xenforo’s resource manager, I can revive the blogs into articles and allow users contribution once again. So my plan was to get dead vBBlog into Xenforo Resource Manager. Things did not go as I planned.

I saw that resource manager is not something that you can use for almost everything like articles or blogs because xenforo has url structure that needs to have a base part in the urls. For resource manager it is /resources I did not like that because I prefer calling it either articles or blogs. On top of that I need articles to form the major part of the home page and not a link from home page. With Resource manager did not thing happen automatically.

Above things can be taken care of with Xenporta add-on but then I could not import my blogs into Xenforo Resource manager as there was no import script for it. So I opted to get refund for my resource manager and the refund process hardly took few minutes.

Now once the Resource manager as an option was dawn and dusted I had to opt for alternative plans for vBBlog.

The Plan B and C for vBBlog

Plan B was to upgrade my vB3 to vB4 and then use vB4 Importer Plugin for Xenforo. After doing the research I found that vB4 can be imported into Xenforo completely including blogs but they are imported those content as threads only. So Instead of converting my vB3.x to vB4 I thought of converting my existing blog posts and comments into threads and posts because I was not sure if vB4 Importer plugin did import things into Xenforo Resource Manager or not because I could not find any documentation that said so.

So what I did was convert those vBBlog posts and comments into vBulletin threads and posts in a specific forum (called Articles as of now) and then opt for thread prefix for those articles and have them inside the Xenforo forum itself.

As I only had 200+ blog posts I did not create anything fancy for redirection and used a manual redirection. So I wrote a mini script that converts blog posts and comments into threads and replies into vBulletin with forum ID 38 which was (and still is) my forum for articles.

<?php
require_once('./global.php');

$blogs = $db->query_read_slave("SELECT blogid FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "blog WHERE state =  'visible'");

while ($blog = $db->fetch_array($blogs))
{
    if($blog['blogid']==0) continue;
    $sql = "INSERT INTO " . TABLE_PREFIX . "thread (title, forumid, postusername,postuserid,dateline,views) SELECT title, 38, username, userid,dateline,views from ".TABLE_PREFIX."blog where blogid=$blog[blogid]";
    $db->query_write($sql);
    $insertedthreadid = $db->insert_id();

    $sql = "INSERT INTO " . TABLE_PREFIX . "post (threadid,username, userid, title,dateline, pagetext,ipaddress) select $insertedthreadid, username,userid,title,dateline,pagetext,ipaddress from ".TABLE_PREFIX."blog_text where blogid=$blog[blogid]";
    $insertedpostid = $db->query_write($sql);

    echo "$blog[blogid],$insertedthreadid\n<br />";
}

All the threads and posts remain invisible to public in vBulletin as I wanted it that way but you can make them visible as well if you want. The output of blog id to thread id as comma-separated value helped me for manual redirection.

Remember the above method will not work if you have hundreds of blog posts and so you may have to create a log table of old and new content ID and then go for redirection.

So the vBBlog posts in vBulletin are moved to threads in vBulletin

http://www.mbaguys.net/t5409

and then merged into Xenforo forums and final destination url becomes

http://www.mbaguys.net/threads/why-mba-after-engineering-or-graduation.5409/

Final Thoughts

The question is interesting and I think this question may be in minds of many others as well. So let me answer this question.

The answer is Yes and No.

Yes you can transfer a domain to other registrar even before few hours of expiry because normally the transfer of domains can be completed in few hours but at times the registrar from where you are transferring the domain out can take lot more time than actually needed. Normally transfer requests can be approved within 5 days and so if they take couple of days to approve the transfer (which normally should not be the case unless a holiday), you have the risk of loosing the domain.

So ideally you should be transferring the domain with few days of buffer in hand but if you still cannot get that done then you can possibly do a live chat at the current registrar and get the transfer approved instantly (almost ). This depends on your current registrar’s support.

My final verdict would be, unless it is a must, do not transfer the domain registrar in the last week of expiry.

I was a fan of vBulletin for forums and have been using it on all my forums. The progress of vBulletin for last couple of years was so disappointing that finally I had to give up with them. Let me share why, as well as what next?

I have always been a fan of vBulletin for forums and have been using it on all my forums and others but in last couple of years (or may be even more) I have been so disappointed with the progress of vBulletin that finally I had to give up vBulletin for forums.

Happy Customer of vBulletin from 2004 to 2009

I have been using vBulletin since July 2004 when it was under Jelsoft. At that time Jelsoft always managed to provide features to match my expectations maintaining the quality of the final product. As an example in earlier version of vBulletin 3 the plugins system did not exists. So creating plugin needed lot of manual code changes but with vBulletin 3.5 plugins became a breeze. In vBulletin 4 Jelsoft announced things like CMS and SEO friendly vBulletin and so it made me really exciting because I always used vBulletin for articles as well.

At that time I was ordering almost a vBulletin license each year as well and till date I have 6 licenses in my account.

Internet Brands Acquiring Jelsoft

Internet Brands acquired vBulletin from Jelsoft and things started to move downhill. Being a developer and entrepreneur myself I know that it takes time for the new team to grasp the vision of the originator but instead of things settling with Internet Brands, the key developer of vBulletin started to leave the organization (for whatever reason) and instead of things starting to improve, it started to deteriorate. Still I was sure it is vBulletin 4 which has all the mess because of transfer of vBulletin from Jelsoft to Internet Brands and so the vision of Jelsoft is not transferred to Internet Brands but then they will come up with something really good and exciting in vBulletin 5 because Internet Brands owns so many great forums in so many niche that they can be their own customers to provide those inputs that can make the forum software a WOW.

Internet Brands and vBulletin 4

VBulletin 5 was announced and the timing of this announcement surprised me yet again. VBulletin 4 was not very stable at that time (and still is not stable according to me) with hundreds if not thousands of critical bugs still pending. If you have a product that is a mess and you want your customers to buy a new product it does not go down well and so this time I did not make the same mistake of pre-ordering vBulletin 5 like vBulletin 4 but kept a keen watch on the progress of it.

After the announcement of vBulletin 5 things with vBulletin 4 almost stopped. We always need to think by stepping into customers’ shoes and Internet Brands missed it completely despite the fact that they own so many large vBulleitn forums themselves and are possibly the biggest customer of vBulletin. Surprisingly they don’t use vBulletin 4 for majority of their own forums and this does mean similar things to happen to their loyal customers as well. It has been asked in forums to official vBulletin team as to why Internet Brands don’t migrate forums to vBulletin 4 and each time such threads are closed without a convincing answer. As an end user the hidden answer that I read from those threads is vBulletin 4 is not usable for those forums or rather it is not usable by anybody who owns a slightly large forum with few hundreds of user online and having a shared host. I have been saying no to vBulletin 4 since long time.

The lack in Vision of Internet Brands with vBulletin 5

In September 2012, when there was a first beta release of vBulletin 5, I saw it was promising but then it would need lot of time to become stable and the focus of Internet Brands is more on developing the UI and not on the backbone. According to me vBulletin 5 Beta releases were yet again hurried and the first beta was even far from Alpha. Some basic functionality bugs were reported in a beta release which means it was not well tested in alpha phase or may be they just left it for the customers to do the testing. Apart from that instead of developing the whole core of vBulletin yet again for vBulletin 5, they could have reused vBulletin 3.x latest release and revamped the front end. May have been far better choice because vBulletin 5 is almost similar to vBulletin 3.x when it comes to features. The home page of vBulletin as of today lists the features as follows.

vBulletin don’t have long feature list to show on the sales page either.

According to me Internet Brand lacks vision for vBulletin 5. Any software development can have tons of features and it is the vision of the management team that decides what features are released in what timeline. It is always the core features that should be in focus. As an example vBulletin customers are experienced webmasters and so having a forums admin section build right into the front end could have been delayed for some other better user features like better social integration with Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn and as many other option as possible or even vBulletin CMS and things like those.

The bottom Line is …

I was convinced that this is end of vBulletin for me. I could never upgrade my vBulletin forums to vB4 since Oct 2009 and so it is almost 3 years which is long enough time for any new company to even code vBulletin right from the scratch provided they have the right team with the right leader.

What Next?

So now the question that was bugging my mind is what next. I had few options to choose from …

Choice 1: WordPress + vBulletin

I have seen many established sites like SitePoint, XDA-Developers use WordPress for their main site and have forums with vBulletin. Go4Expert always had one CMS for Articles and forums because I don’t prefer too many CMSes but if I had to opt for WordPress vBulletin, I will need to move articles from vBulletin to WordPress and keep the forum in vBulletin but there are few issues that I needed to address when using vBulletin 3.x for forum.

vBulletin 3.x requires vBSEO for user friendly urls and other SEO enhancement but vBSEO does not support category based urls which means your thread urls can only have the forum name in the url for a thread and not of the grand parent or top level forum for that thread. I wanted it that way.

On top of that vBSEO development has stopped. VBSEO last released date was March 11, 2011 and then only few patches and bug fixes after that. VBulletin is taking steps to include SEO in its core functionality and though they are not able to do it rightly, vBSEO is possibly loosing on sales now and so vBSEO is not being kept updated.

I still tried vBSEO for Go4Expert but then the way vBSEO converts the vBulletin to friendly urls by replacing the html content on the fly makes vBSEO resource heavy. Though it did not had issues when I started using it, it could cause problems in future and I may need to spend lot more on hosting computation and lot more powerful server to support vBSEO.

I always wanted vBulletin out of the box support for friendly urls, which was the core feature that vBulletin 4 was coming with (and the reason for my pre-order in October 2009). So instead of using vBSEO’s friendly urls on Go4Expert I was ready to wait for some time so vBulletin team can provide better solutions which never happened even in vBulletin 5 and so I was left with no choice.

On top of that if I use WordPress for articles, I may need to use vBulletin + WordPress + VBSSO (for single sign on of WordPress and vBulletin). It would mean I am using too many external scripts like WordPress, VBSSO and vBSEO along with vBulletin and so this choice was something that I will try to avoid.

Choice 2: Move to Xenforo

The next choice was to make a move to Xenforo from vBulletin and many webmasters have opted for the same including Shawn Hogan of Digital Point (and you can read about his migration here). The only thing that prevented me from opting for Xenforo was the lawsuit against them. I was convinced that Xenforo would come out clean (which they managed as well. See here) and it is Internet Brands testing them financially but then I did not want to take chance with Xenforo because if it did not manage to develop the software further I may need to get into development of Xenforo anyways so the obvious choice left was to develop on vBulletin 3.x

Internet Brands managed one customer less for Xenforo because they managed to drag the lawsuit touch more than I expected but I think I will have yet again few more new forums coming up. Already planning some new niche on Xenforo. Once I have something more concrete will share them here.

A point to note here is once lawsuit was over for Xenforo, they extended all Xenforo license by 255 days because there was hardly any development for a long time. Internet Brands should take a leaf out of it and possibly opt for similar scenario for vBulletin 5 as well because customers who have paid for vBulletin 4, never got what they expected.

Choice 3: Customize vBulletin as per my needs

The third option is to use vBulletin framework and customize it completely as per my need and this is what I opted for on Go4Expert.

Results of Custom vBulletin for Go4Expert

I opted for custom code based on vBulletin 3.x creating my own SEO friendly urls for Go4Expert and now I have them live for 3 months. Google has updated almost all its url without much impact on traffic. I already see that Google uses less time downloading content from Go4Expert because of change in backend code for URLs but I also expect similar results when it comes to new design. Will share them as soon as I have them as well.

I read in Matt Cutts blog or in his video that if you change the urls as well as the page HTML, Google may have issues mapping old urls to new and so my plan was to make the new urls live and then work on getting the new design. It was delayed by few weeks because of some other tasks but then managed to get the new design live in the last week of March.

The focus on the new design has been to make it light weight with features that are being used by our members and avoid those that are sparingly used. On top of that I have lists of tasks that I want to do as I move along. The code for Go4Expert is more or less custom with core of vBulletin modified to make things lighter, faster and less tabular.

Conclusion

According to me it’s high time to move to Xenforo because Xenforo is far better choice than vBulletin. I have similar plans for MBAGuys and CFanatic but only after I can manage more stability for Go4Expert.

BTW I am an affiliate of vBulletin but not of Xenforo yet.

Team WebSpades wanted to have a weekend tour for long time and after few months of discussion (literally) we could come to a date where we could spend a weekend together. It was 16th March 2013.

I was not a fan of going to Digha (which is most people’s weekend destination here in Kolkata) because I have been there once. (Digha Photos) Finally we decided Tajpur, which is very near to Digha but not Digha.

There is very little information available on Internet about Tajpur but I saw we have Paragliding and water scooters but you need to be very lucky to have them on the beach. On top of that Tajpur does not have the train option and so to reach Tajpur, you have to opt for either multiple transport or opt for a car. We opted a car.

Embarking for Tajpur

After a 4 hours long drive, we settled into our Mouchak Resorts hotel where we had booking done in advance. There were some weird rules in this hotel.

Check out time is 10AM in the morning and I am not sure why. Normally it is 11 AM i.e. one hour for cleaning staff to get things sorted for next person who may check in at 12 Noon.

You cannot have your food ordered in the hotel in your room and have to visit restaurant for having your food. I could not agree on this point and after some argument manage to convince the staff that it is impossible for me to have food in hot when I have my AC room.

One thing to note about hotels in Tajpur is they have Drivers Dormitory option and so your driver can be accommodated easily.

Do you agree that Indian Bloggers have an added advantage? If you don't this article will definitely change your perspective. If you do see what advantages Indians have.

Do you agree on the fact that Indian Bloggers have any added advantage? I think they have lot of added advantages over their peer International Bloggers and let me share what I think are the top <del>three</del> five added advantages for Indian bloggers.

1. Low costs of living in India

Cost of living in India is quite low compared to other developed countries and this becomes the best advantage any Indian blogger can have to get started with blogging.

I have been on the other side of the interview table for quite sometime now for many small start-ups in Kolkata including WebSpades Technologies and have interviewed quite a few fresher engineers and graduates, I can tell you for sure that and an average engineering student that passes out here in India (Or May be in Kolkata at least) have an expected salary in range 4 digit figures to lower 5 digit figures. This means that if he can make roughly 200 to 300 USD online, it is as good as his salary.

Earning 200 USD from an online blog is very easily achievable provided he is willing to build his blog and provide value to his readers in the starting days? The dilemma is Indians try blogging to be millionaires overnight and for a job they are fine getting a degree after few years of education. Try giving few years to blogging and I am sure it can achieve lot more than what you would get in any job financially as well as mentally.

2,3,4. Few High Quality Bloggers, Low Competition & High Traffic

In November 2012 The Telegraph published an article about Top Indian Bloggers and though the article misses some of the better Indian bloggers I personally know like Deepak Raj of BikeAdvice or Manish Chauhan of JagoInvestor and many others who definitely make more than $1000 for sure from their blog, the point I am trying to make here is there are very few bloggers who even make what International bloggers like Darren Rowse, Pat Flynn or Brian Clark makes from their not so popular sites. So if you have interest in any particular topic, you can always create a blog from an Indian perspective in a similar niche of what international bloggers blog about and still be successful.

Take the case of IMTips – I would say it is pretty much similar scenario of copying international bloggers and adapting to Indian perspective. I am (and was) also follower of top bloggers (Top Bloggers I Follow) like Problogger, CopyBlogger and many others as well as was an active member of many other forums like SitePoint, DigitalPoint and HighRankings. I used to get emails from my own forum (Go4Expert / MBAGuys) as well as other forums about building forums, monetizing forums and other Internet Marketing Opportunities in India.

I was tired of answering those questions in emails and so finally decided to put those answers online. I was least interested in creating yet another Make Money Online Blog and so I just dumped those articles on one of my existing dead blog CodeItWell.com because I thought it would just help me reply to such emails with just a link. I could never imagine that even TechCrunch and others would pick up my content and link to it. The response was so awesome that I had to create IMTips because now I was tired of explaining that CodeItWell.com is not about coding but it is about Internet marketing. The main focus of IMTips is not to make a living for me and so I am not focusing on monetizing it as of now but may think about it in the future. That does not mean I don’t make anything from IMTips. I review and recommend lot of resources and products that I use for my online business and some of them earn me a commission when purchased.

Talking about competition, it may be really tough (read impossible) to find a niche that is less competitive and yet can have a fairly large audience globally but if you add Indian GEO to the niche, it automatically becomes less of a competition. When you blog on anything from an Indian perspective it automatically becomes less competitive and is still targets a very large audience. Remember Indian population, clearly a big advantage as an Indian.

5. Booming eCommerce in India

According to WikiPedia India has close to 10 million online shoppers and is growing at an estimated rate of 30% per annum. Indian retail market is estimated at $470 billion in 2011 and is expected to grow to $675 Bn by 2016 and $850 Bn by 2020. I don’t give a damn to those numbers apart from that fact that it reveals one thing, which is eCommerce is growing in India at a sparkling rate.

Coming back from eCommerce to blogging, if you try to say the same thing as what an established blogger have said, it becomes useless but then if you try to speak from a perspective of users related to India, readers can very easily connect with you. This is one of the prime reason I prefer using the domain as shabbir.in to shabbirbhimani.com for my technical analysis blog.

When I first launched my Do It Yourself Technical Analysis eBook in Jan 2011 for Indian audience I was skeptical if it would be accepted or not. Will Indians prefer an eBook or they would prefer a conventional hard cover paper book. I was ready to test things out and so launched the eBook shabbirbook.com and found that people are really interested in buying an eBook from me.

Of course having an eBook as well as paper book would tap a larger audience but then just the eBook is also not a bad choice. Though not many people in India prefer paying with a credit card, they give me a call to know other payment options like bank fund transfer (or NEFT as we commonly know) or even Cash on Delivery. I have those payment option as well but then more than 50% of my sales are through ClickBank. If you prefer to start selling with ClickBank here is a step by step guide to get you started selling with ClickBank.

On top of that if your target audience are Indians, you can adapt to India’s unique selling propositions like Cash on Delivery Payment option or NEFT Bank Transfer Payment option or may be even ECS Payment for recurring payments. Clearly an added advantage for Indian Bloggers.

Final Thoughts

Do you now agree on the fact that Indian Bloggers have some serious advantages? If you agree why not just get started blogging? If you have any further questions, sound off in comments.

GoDaddy renewal pricing for .com domains is not consistent. I could not find any logic for such pricing and so the title Weird GoDaddy Pricing for .com renewals.

GoDaddy renewal pricing for .com domains is not consistent. I could not find any logic for such pricing and so the title Weird GoDaddy Pricing for .com renewals.

I wanted to renew the domain DIYTechnicalAnalysis.com. I saw the final price without any discount.

I normally get 20 to 25% discount in GoDaddy. In each order I get discount coupons for use in subsequent purchases. Normally the coupons have a minimum purchase limit such as $75 or $100. So I increased the number of years to see the discount in action. It did not work either.

I added one more domain for renewals and I saw this.

Second .com domain renewal adds the discount and so I thought it may be that one domain is not eligible for a discount. Trying to find a logic Just to be sure on the logic, I checked with another single domain renewal and I saw little discount.

Now I added DIYTechnicalAnalysis.com to my order and I see no discount for it.

So I tried finding a logic behind such pricing. The thought that hit me was if the domain is expiring soon, they may be offering less discount like in case of DIYTechnicalAnalysis.com but more discount for G4Ef.com / CodeItWell.com but then CodeItWell.com expires in May and G4Ef in April and there is more discount on G4Ef than on CodeItWell.com

Just to confirm on the date as a factor of discount, after renewing the domain DIYTechnicalAnalysis I tried renewal yet again and still the same. The pricing for domain renewal does not depend on the expiry date and I could not find any reason for not offering discount on one .com domain renewal but not on other. Did you find the GoDaddy Pricing For .com Renewals Weird? Share your thoughts in comments below.

Just because your business is online does not mean that all its marketing has to be online as well. Offline marketing tactics can be applied very well to your online business as well.

Just because your business is online does not mean that all its marketing has to be online as well. Offline marketing tactics can be applied very well to your online business as well.

Of course, that does not mean that you should stop doing online marketing for your business. It only means that you use both online as well as offline methods to get your business raking in the profits! Here are ways you can easily market your online business offline.

1. Business Cards

Get business cards made with coupon codes written on them. This is a really great offline marketing technique that works for most businesses. The coupon code can be entered on your website by the person when he makes a purchase. Also, the business card will ensure that it is kept and even better, passed on along to a friend. This way, you get more publicity at a really low cost!

2. Postcards

Postcards still happen to be one of the easiest and profit-making offline marketing techniques that have ever been created! Yes, that’s right. But you got to do it right. Send out postcards for your online business to targeted lists of people. You may create lists of people over time. Whatever it is, sending out postcards with brief and simple call-to-action messages works best for most businesses. Don’t stuff in too much information in the postcards as people are just going to throw them away. Instead, keep it short and simple.

3. Networking

Networking is another good way of offline marketing your business. Your city or town may have a club or gym where owners of small businesses meet to discuss and share ideas. This is a great place to get ideas to market your business as well as to get the word around about your products or services. Word of mouth publicity is actually a great way of marketing and advertising

4. Local Partners

Partnering with a local business in your area is a really great way to get your online business noticed. Make sure that the business you partner with offers complimentary goods and services so that both of you can help each other in furthering your interests. For instance, if you offer computer repair services on your website, perhaps you can partner up with your local computer store for mutual benefit. Or, if you sell home appliances on your website, you can partner up with a local business that offers repair services for such products. Having an offline partner can be a great way of giving your online business more credibility.

Final Thoughts

Do not book any ticket in MakeMyTrip before reading this review about what you see as final price and what you actually pay.

Few years back when I was a customer of MakeMyTrip their interface was confusing to me and so I switched to ClearTrip. If I remember correctly MakeMyTrip’s search results were based on base price that airlines charge and not on final price that we needed to pay which included surcharge and other charges. It became an issue and so I looked for alternatives and moved to ClearTrip.

Recent advertisement about MakeMyTrip drove me again to their site.

My recent glimpse of MakeMyTrip site surprised me with lot of improvements but I was shocked with the issue when making a payment. They charge 200 Rs as per passenger convenience charge but this convenience charge is almost hidden.

Don’t book your tickets through MakeMyTrip and even if you plan to book your ticket through MakeMyTrip make sure you are not paying those extra bucks unknowingly.

If you expect a short and sweet answer to the above question, you are wrong. There are multiple scenarios where as in some cases you have option to pay in Indian Rupees but not always.

Scenario 1: Payment Outside India

You are paying in currency other than Indian Rupees but then you can be charged in Indian Rupees. It only means you save on the forex rate from your credit card company but then you have issues with PayPal Crap Forex rates.

Scenario 2: Payment to Fellow Indian

Indians are not allowed to pay fellow Indians through PayPal and you have to look for alternative payment methods.

Scenario 3: Receiving Payments in India

Receiving payments in India has 3 major differences. I say major because there are other minor differences but that is not the whole point.

There is an upper-cap of $3000. This means Indians cannot accept single payment of more than $3000 in one transaction. You have to split that transaction in parts.

Indians cannot receive personal payments. All Payments has to be business payments which means each transaction has a fee associated with it.

Indians cannot use the funds in their PayPal account for payments. They have to withdraw the payment received to their bank accounts. For Payments they have to use a credit card.

Coming back to Original Question of Can Someone Pay in Indian Rupees on PayPal?

The answer is if you cannot pay other follow Indians, I don’t see a need to be paying in Indian Rupees.

There are many articles that discuss about so many file transfer options available for transferring big files. After testing almost all of them I nailed down to couple of file transfer option that does the job for me very easily and hassle free each time I need to transfer big files with my friends or clients.

1. DropBox

It is the easiest method to transfer big files with your friends or clients. Easier because once you have the application installed on your PC or MAC, you can just place the file in your local folder and upload hassle are all taken care by the application. You can just share the link with your client or friend to download the file. I once shared a 3 GB File without any hassle of even keeping my MAC on for an upload.

Many people assume that you can only share with people who have a DropBox account but it is not true. You can just send them a hyperlink to download the file as well.

The only risk is that such file is available for public to download as well if they can get hold of the URL. If you are looking for not allowing public to view such files, your client or friend may need to sign up at DropBox and then only you can share securely with them.

Apart from that when you refer your friends or clients to DropBox, you get extra DropBox Storage for transferring even bigger files. If you are not using DropBox yet, you can signup as my friend here and it will help me gain 500 MB of extra DropBox Space.

The disadvantage of using DropBox is when you are sharing folders; you and your friend both are using DropBox space. It means if you are sharing a folder that has 1 GB of content, you are using your quota of 1 GB as well as your friend is also using 1 GB of his quota of space. Ideally any one of the user and not both should use the space.

2. WeTransfer

WeTransfer helps you transfer big files (As big as 2 GB for free) without any hassle. The upload is really quick and it is one of the reason I prefer WeTransfer. Your clients or friends do not need to create account with them and just a link in an email is enough for them to download the file.

The uploaded file remains online for 2 weeks, which is a convenient time frame for backups to remain online. You may not need to download large files unless something is messed up and need to restore things from a backup.

I prefer using WeTransfer only when my clients do not prefer using DropBox or his DropBox account is full and cannot accept any more large files.

Final Thoughts

I tested many other large file sending programs like transferbigfiles.com, yousendit.com, sendspace.com and others and yet to find anything as convenient as DropBox and WeTransfer.

What file transfer programs you prefer for sharing and transfering big files? Share your file transfer stories in comments.

After awesome response to Free Wordpress Installation Service many readers requested similar offer for forums and so here I am Offering everybody Free vBulletin Installation Service. Yes you heard it right completely free vBulletin Setup service.

After awesome response to Free WordPress Installation Service many readers requested similar offer for forums and so here I am Offering everybody Free vBulletin Installation Service. Yes you heard it right completely free vBulletin Setup service.

Let me answer questions that are in your mind now.

How to get your Free vBulletin installation service?

I am sure this is the first question that is in your mind right at this stage and so let me tell you exactly what needs to be done to get your free vBulletin installation service.

All you have to do is order a new web hosting account from BlueHost using the following link http://imtips.co/go/bluehost. If you still don’t have a vBulletin license you can order now.

Once you have your hosting account setup completed, you can download the vBulletin from your members area and email me the zip file to shabbir [at] shabbir.in or shabbir [at] imtips.co along with your vBulletin customer number and your hosting control panel details so I can install vBulletin for you on your domain. Once the forum is live, I’ll send you the forum admin information that you can change.

Update: BlueHost is offering a free domain for rest of your life if you place your hosting order using my affiliate link now.

Is there any Catch?

There is no catch. BlueHost sponsors your vBulletin forum installation service. They are paying me to get vBulletin installed for you. You may be wondering about quality of BlueHost but it is one of the most preferred Shared Hosts and I use them as well as recommend them (See here) for smaller sites.

What’s included in free Installation Service?

Professional install and upgrade service by vBulletin team only includes the vanilla installation but my free vBulletin Install service offers a lot more.

Install any pre-selected theme of your choice

Create categories, forums and sub forums.

Install Google Analytics or any other stats tracking for your forum.

Replace default vBulletin logo with your own company logo.

Enable spam prevention measures in your vBulletin.

Optimize vBulletin settings for better user experience.

Is your free Installation Service better than vBulletin team?

If you were to pay vBulletin team to install vBulletin forum or CMS, it would cost you at least $149.

And on top of that it only includes vanilla install with no customization but I also offer few customizations to make your vBulletin forum easier for admins and better end user experience.

My Elance Lifetime Profile Snapshot

Hundreds of clients cannot be wrong and so I will say my free service is far better than what vBulletin provides for $149. vBulletin team only offers an out of the box vBulletin forum which hardly needs few clicks to complete the setup but my service not only installs vBulletin out of the box but make your forum better by adding few more basic, yet important changes.

What if I want other plugins like vBSEO/vBOptimize?

I am always available for hire at Elance

What version of vBulletin you offer as free installation?

I can install your preferred version of vBulleitn i.e. vBulletin 3, 4 or even vBulletin 5 but I will recommend vB3 over vB4 (See why here). Yes vB5 looks promising but it is still a beta and so if you are fine making frequent updates, I will suggest going with vB5 else vB3.8.x

What if I already have a hosting and a vBulletin license?

If you are not planning to buy a shared hosting plan or have a vBulletin license or both, you can hire me here to get the vBulletin installation done for you.

Final Thoughts

If you have any further questions, share them in comments below and I will be more than happy to answer them. If you don’t have any more questions, go ahead and get started with your forum with BlueHost and vBulletin.
