Mission Impossible Star Peter Graves Dies in LA

LOS ANGELES – Peter Graves, whose calm and intelligent demeanor was a good fit to the intrigue of "Mission Impossible" as well as the satire of the "Airplane" films, has died.

Graves passed away Sunday just a few days before his 84th birthday outside his home in Los Angeles, publicist Sandy Brokaw said. Graves was returning from brunch with his wife of nearly 60 years and his family when he had what Graves' doctor believed was a heart attack, Brokaw said.

Graves first gained attention of many baby boomers with the 1950s TV series "Fury," but remained best known for the role of Jim Phelps, leader of a gang of special agents who battled evil conspirators in TV's "Mission: Impossible."

Normally cast as a hero, he turned in an unforgettable performance early in his career as the treacherous Nazi spy in Billy Wilder's 1953 prisoner-of-war drama "Stalag 17."

He also masterfully lampooned his straight-arrow image when he portrayed bumbling airline pilot Clarence Oveur in the 1980 disaster movie spoof "Airplane!"

Graves appeared in dozens of films and a handful of television shows in a career of nearly 60 years.
The authority and trust he projected made him a favorite for commercials late in his life, and he was often encouraged to go into politics.

"He had this statesmanlike quality," Brokaw said. "People were always encouraging him to run for office."
Graves was preceded in stardom by his older brother James Arness, who played Marshal Matt Dillon on TV's "Gunsmoke."
Born Peter Aurness, Graves adopted his grandfather's last name to avoid confusion with his older brother, who had dropped the "U" from the family name.

Graves' career began with cheaply made exploitation films like "It Conquered the World," in which he battled a carrot-shaped monster from Venus, and "Beginning of the World," in which he fought a giant grasshopper.

He later took on equally formidable human villains each week on "Mission: Impossible."

Every show began with Graves, as agent Phelps, listening to a tape of instructions outlining his team's latest mission and explaining that if he or any of his agents were killed or captured "the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions."

The tape always self-destructed within seconds of being played.

The show ran on CBS from 1967 to 1973 and was revived on ABC from 1988 to 1990 with Graves back as the only original cast member.

The actor credited clever writing for the show's success.

"It made you think a little bit and kept you on the edge of your seat because you never knew what was going to happen next," he once said.

He also played roles in such films as John Ford's "The Long Gray Line" and Charles Laughton's "The Night of the Hunter," as well as "The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell," "Texas Across the River" and "The Ballad of Josie."

Graves' first television series was the children's Saturday morning show, "Fury," about an orphan and his untamed black stallion. Filmed in Australia, it lasted six years on NBC.

In his later years, Graves brought his white-haired eminence to PBS as host of "Discover: The World of Science" and A&E's "Biography" series.

He noted during an interview in 2000 that he made his foray into comedy somewhat reluctantly.
Filmmakers Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker had written a satire on the airplane-in-trouble movies, and they wanted Graves and fellow handsome actors Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Nielsen and Robert Stack to spoof their serious images.

All agreed, but Graves admitted to nervousness. On the one hand, he said, he considered the role a challenge, "but it also scared me."

"I thought I could lose a whole long acting career," he recalled.

"Airplane!" became a box-office smash, and Graves returned for "Airplane II, The Sequel."

Graves was a champion hurdler in high school in Minnesota, as well as a clarinet player in dance bands and a radio announcer.
After two years in the Air Force, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota as a drama major and worked in summer stock before following his brother west to Hollywood.

He found enough success there to send for his college sweetheart, Joan Endress. They were married in 1950 and had three daughters — Kelly Jean, Claudia King and Amanda Lee — and six grandchildren.

Drug Cartels Out Of Control: 2 Americans Associated With U.S. Consulate Killed In Drive By Shootings In Mexico, President Obama Outraged

CNN) -- Three people connected to the U.S. consulate in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, were killed in a drive-by shooting in the violent border city, a senior White House official told CNN Sunday.

One of the victims was an American employee at the consulate. Her husband and the husband of a Mexican employee of the consulate were also killed. The shooting happened Saturday afternoon, the official said.

Details of the killings were not immediately available, but the news had reached the White House.

"The President is deeply saddened and outraged by the news of the brutal murders of three people associated with the United States Consulate General in Ciudad Juarez," National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said in a statement Sunday. "He extends his condolences to the families and condemns these attacks on consular and diplomatic personnel serving at our foreign missions. In concert with Mexican authorities, we will work tirelessly to bring their killers to justice."

In response, the U.S. State Department authorized the temporary relocation of employees' families working in border-area consulates.

The families of employees at U.S. consulates in Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey and Matamoros are allowed to leave for a period of 30 days "in response to an increase in violence along the Mexican side of its border with the U.S.," State Department spokesman Fred Lash told CNN.

After 30 days, the authorization can be renewed, depending on a review, Lash said, adding that this was not a mandatory evacuation.

Ciudad Juarez is one of the frontlines in Mexico's war against the drug cartels that operate in its territory.

Juarez, located on the border across from El Paso, Texas, has become a focal point of Mexican President Felipe Calderon's anti-drug efforts after the January 31 killings of 15 people there, most of whom were students with no ties to organized crime. The incident sparked outrage across Mexico.

The government has not released official figures, but national media say 7,600 Mexicans lost their lives in the war on drugs in 2009. Calderon said last year that 6,500 Mexicans died in drug violence in 2008.

Meanwhile, farther south in Mexico, at least 25 people were killed in a series of violent incidents in the western Mexican state of Guerrero on Saturday, state officials said.

The bodies of 14 people, including nine civilians and five police officers, were found in various parts of the resort city of Acapulco, the official Notimex news agency reported, citing Guerrero Public Security Secretary Juan Heriberto Salinas.

In the small city of Ajuchitlan del Progreso, 10 civilians and one soldier were killed in two shootouts that started when federal officials tried to carry out search warrants on two locations, Salinas said.

Police in the state were on a heightened security alert, he said.

Lady GaGa's Monster Ball tour has taken its toll on the singer's health condition. During a concert at Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand on March 13, exhausted GaGa was seen nearly passing out when singing "Bad Romance".

Clad in a silver mini dress matched with a crown of the same color, GaGa preferred to sit on the stage instead of delivering an energetic dance routine like she usually does in her every show. At some point, she even took off her head-wear and lay flat on stage while still delivering the song's verses.

Lady GaGa has been touring Stateside and across the pond since November 27 last year and recently added several tour dates which will end on June 4. After completing the European leg, she reportedly will kick off another extended trek which will start on July 1 at TD Garden in Boston.

TOP 5 MOViES (3.15.10): "Alice in Wonderland" Rules Box Office For Second Week

"Alice in Wonderland" had no major competitors this weekend as three new movies debuted in the top 5. During its second week, the adventure movie still becomes the champion at the chart though it has dropped about 46.6% in ticket sales.

The Tim Burton-directed movie raked in an estimated $62 million on its second weekend, making a total of $208.6 million domestic gross so far. The amount has covered the production budget of $200 million.

"Green Zone", which sees another collaboration from "Bourne" star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass, has become the runner-up with an approximately $14.5 million cume.

Meanwhile, "She's Out of My League" steals the third place from former Box Office winner "Shutter Island" with $9.6 million tally. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring thriller is now forced to drop two positions to the fifth, with an additional $8.1 million.

"Remember Me", which has "Twilight" actor Robert Pattinson starring as the major character, surprisingly does not soar high at the chart. The Summit Entertainment's drama only pulls in $8.3 million on its debut weekend, making it nab the fourth spot.

For his final push for health care reform, President Obama has gone into campaign mode, getting himself out there and addressing the American people. But as Jon Stewart pointed out last night, Fox News, Obama's "real opponent," has retaliated. In campaign mode themselves, the network has begun running anti-health care commercials that greatly resemble attack ads.

The combination of the ads and the network's coverage of pro-public option protesters have left viewers believing something "that may not have any basis in fact."

Stewart pointed out that Fox News depicted the peaceful protests as a Tehran-esque mob, getting ready to storm the gates of the Ritz Carlton to get their point across. But upon further inspection of the blurry footage, he found members of this group included a women in a wheelchair. "I don't think you can storm things in a wheelchair."

The manipulating footage, combined with some smugness from anchor Megyn Kelly, prompted Stewart to put it bluntly: "I think Fox News might be the meanest sorority in the world."

33 Year old teacher teaches her 14 year old student oral sex. Arrested

BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) -- A Burbank middle school teacher accused of having sex with a teenage male student over a six-month period last year appeared in court Wednesday, but her arraignment was postponed until March 25.

Amy Beck, 33, is charged with four counts of unlawful sex with a person under 16 and one count of oral copulation with a person under 16. If convicted, she faces up to seven years in state prison.

Investigators allege Beck, a teacher at David Starr Jordan Middle School, was having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old male student from March to September 2009. The unidentified boy was 15 when the alleged affair ended.

Beck appeared calm during her court first court appearance Wednesday morning, which only last a few minutes.

Beck remains jailed on $175,000 bail. Her attorney, Michael Williamson, said his client plans to remain in jail, in part because of all the media attention the case is receiving.

"She simply thinks that at this point it would be best that she continue to cooperate with the Burbank Police Department, and obviously through me, and it's easier done from the confines of the jail rather than out in public with the media and press everywhere that might be pursuing her," Williamson said.

Beck surrendered at the Burbank police station on Monday afternoon, accompanied by her lawyer. She had apparently been feeling a lot of remorse for the crime and decided to come forward.

"She said she had sexual relations with one of her students," said Burbank police Sgt. Robert Quesada. "She said her conscience was bothering her and she just wanted to get this off her chest."

Police said the victim recently confirmed the sexual affair to detectives.

Beck had been teaching social science at the school for about four years, but suddenly resigned last week.

Police said Beck is married with children. Her husband is an LAPD officer based out of the Southeast Division.

Could "24" Be Moving To NBC?

It's no secret that 24 might not get a ninth season. FOX has been looking at cancelling the series, and quite possibly might do so in the next few days, according to Variety. Critics haven't been very enthusiastic about this season, and the cost of production has continued to move upward in contrast with the dropping viewership.

A film for the series is being considered, but is it the end for the old 24-hour format, where it actually took place in real time over the course of one day? Maybe not.

A crew member for the series has some optimism that another network might revive the series for a run. NBC's head Angela Bromstad, according to the crew member, is a "major league" 24 fan, and is "extremely motivated to find a way to get 24 on NBC.

This is somewhat ironic, considering 24's tone is just as gritty as Southland, a show which NBC dropped (and was later picked up by TNT). How long would 24 last before it was traded once again to another network?

However, NBC IS interested, and this is good news for Bauer fans, obviously. Of course, the question is: can it happen?

If the movie is going ahead as planned, it will be very, very hard to make the shooting schedule compatible with that of the series, given that it takes most of the year to produce one season of the action drama. The film, in which Jack Bauer fights terrorists in Europe, might not happen, if the series is picked up, or vice versa.

Nigerian woman uses fake I.D. to get job at Post Office to steal I.D.'s

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. (MYFOX ATLANTA) - A woman was in jail Tuesday, after Douglas County investigators said the assumed someone else's identity, gained U.S. citizenship illegally and stole mail.

Douglas County authorities said the case had so many twists and turns it was hard to keep up with it. The U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Attorneys Office, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as local jurisdictions are now all looking into the case and the victims.

Investigators said the woman concocted an elaborate identity theft scheme that all started when she illegally entered the U.S. from Nigeria and assumed someone else's identity.

"She went through the citizenship for the U.S. and was granted citizenship under Mary Afolobi. When in fact, she is not Mary Afolobi," said Chief Deputy Stan Copeland of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Douglas County investigators said they don't know the suspect's real name but they said after she obtained U.S. citizenship using Afolobi's name, she was able to get a job with the postal service as a mail carrier in Paulding County.

Investigators said while she was employed with the postal service, she stole the identities of people on her mail route.

According to investigators, the unidentified suspect also set up her own business, a used car lot on Bankhead Highway in Douglas County. Investigators said the woman used the stolen identities to apply for a loan and buy cars from her own used car lot. None of the loans were legitimate and there were never any used cars.

"We can find no evidence there was anything really sold there or if anyone was even working there," said Copeland.

Authorities said the woman's complex scheme has far reaching implications.

"You start thinking about homeland security issues. You start thinking about how many others are there like this. If she's able to do it, that means there's something in the system we need to look at," Copeland said.

Authorities wouldn't say how long the scheme had been going on or how many victims were identified because the investigation is ongoing with the federal government.

True love can take many forms. In this case, it has taken the form of a Korean man falling in love with, and eventually marrying, a large pillow with a picture of a woman on it.

Lee Jin-gyu fell for his 'dakimakura' - a kind of large, huggable pillow from Japan, often with a picture of a popular anime character printed on the side.

In Lee's case, his beloved pillow has an image of Fate Testarossa, from the 'magical girl' anime series Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha.

Now the 28-year-old otaku (a Japanese term that roughly translates to somewhere between 'obsessive' and 'nerd') has wed the pillow in a special ceremony, after fitting it out with a wedding dress for the service in front of a local priest. Their nuptials were eagerly chronicled by the local media.

He is completely obsessed with this pillow and takes it everywhere,' said one friend.

'They go out to the park or the funfair where it will go on all the rides with him. Then when he goes out to eat he takes it with him and it gets its own seat and its own meal,' they added.

The pillow marriage is not the first similarly-themed unusual marriage in recent times - it comes after a Japanese otaku married his virtual girlfriend Nene Anegasaki, a character who only exists in the Nintendo DS game Love Plus, last November.

Lesbian Student Asks To Bring Girlfriend To Prom and School Completely Cancels It

An 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student whose school district canceled her senior prom rather than allow her to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo said she got some unfriendly looks from classmates when she reluctantly returned to campus Thursday.

Constance McMillen said she didn't want to go back the day after the Itawamba County school board's decision, but her father told her she needed to face her classmates, teachers and school officials.

"My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am," McMillen told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on."

The district announced Wednesday it wouldn't host the April 2 prom. The decision came after the American Civil Liberties Union told officials a policy banning same-sex prom dates violated students' rights. The ACLU said the district not letting McMillen wear a tuxedo violated her free expression rights.

McMillen said she felt some hostility toward her on the Itawamba County Agricultural High School campus.

"Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year."' McMillen said.

The school board issued a statement announcing it wouldn't host the event in Fulton, "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events."

The statement didn't mention McMillen or the ACLU. When asked by the AP if McMillen's demand led to the cancellation, school board attorney Michele Floyd said she could only reference the statement.

"I guess they would rather do that than what's right, what's constitutionally correct," McMillen said.

Same-sex prom dates and cross-dressing are new issues for many high schools around the country, said Daryl Presgraves, a spokesman for GLSEN: Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, a Washington-based advocacy group.

"A lot of schools actually react rather than do the research and find out what the rights of these students are," said Presgraves, who was preparing to facilitate a discussion about anti-gay bullying at a National Association of Secondary School Principals meeting.

The school district had said it hoped a privately sponsored prom could be held. McMillen said if that happens, she's sure she'll be excluded.

"It's a small town in Mississippi, and it's run by an older generation with money. Most of them are more conservative and they don't agree with it," she said.

Fulton Mayor Paul Walker said he supports the school district's decision and knew of no private efforts to host the prom.

"I think the community as a whole is probably in support of the school district," Walker said of the town of about 4,000.

Itawamba County is a rural area of about 23,000 people in north Mississippi near the Alabama state line. It's near Pontotoc County, Miss., where more than a decade ago school officials were sued in federal court over their practice of student-led intercom prayer and Bible classes.

A couple of students had different reactions to the decision.

Anna Watson, a 17-year-old junior at the high school, was looking forward to the prom, especially since the town's only hotspot is the bowling alley, she said.

"I am a little bummed out about it. I guess it's a decision that had to be made. Either way someone was going to get disappointed - either Constance was or we were," Watson said. "I don't agree with homosexuality, but I can't change what another person thinks or does."

McKenzie Chaney, 16, said she wasn't planning to attend the prom, but "it's kind of ridiculous that they can't let her wear the tuxedo and it all be over with."

A Feb. 5 memo to students laid out the criteria for bringing a date to the prom, and one requirement was that the person must be of the opposite sex.

Presgraves said his organization hears about school districts that prohibit same-sex prom dates and gay-straight alliance clubs at schools. He said those kind of policies are detrimental to gay students.

"It sends a message that these students shouldn't be treated the same," Presgraves said.
