Lil Wayne To Serve Jail Time With General Population

Lil Wayne is a man of the people. Prior to yesterday’s (March 8) reports from tmz.com that Weezy would be serving out his one-year gun charge at Rikers Island under protective custody, it ends up that the rap superstar will be treated like any other inmate.

According to New York’s Daily News Wayne’s lawyer, Stacey Richman, originally claimed that the rap superstar was being forced into protective custody. Stephen Morello, a spokesperson for the Correctional Department, cleared up those allegations, saying that the New Orleans-bred MC will have “general population escort” status. This means that whenever Lil Tunechi is outside of his housing unit, he will be accompanied by a correction captain; similar to how authorities handle gang members.

Inside his housing unit, on the other hand, he has the option to socialize with the 17 other men sharing his cell block.

Wayne was arrested in 2007 when a police officer boarded his tour bus, after smelling marijuana. Once inside the vehicle she caught the rapper with a .40 caliber handgun. Last October he entered a guilty plea in order to receive lesser jail time. He was sentenced and immediately shipped off to Rikers yesterday, after several failed attempts. With good behavior the Young Money general may be home in eight months.

Woman Causes Car Accident While Shaving Her Crotch

37-year-old Megan Mariah Barnes was arrested last week in Florida after she caused a two-car crash on the highway, because she was shaving her bikini line behind the wheel.

One day before the shave and crash, Megan was convicted of DUI and driving with a suspended license, so she shouldn't have been driving in the first place.

The officer at the scene told KeyNews.com that Megan told him she was shaving her business on the road, because she was "meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be ready for the visit."

Megan was charged with driving with a revoked license, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a wreck with injuries and driving with no insurance.

According to the New York Post, Lindsay Lohan has filed a $100 million lawsuit against E-Trade, because she believes that a milkaholic baby named Lindsay featured in their latest commercial is a parody of her life. Lindsay's lawyer is arguing that Lindsay is single-name famous like Oprah or Madonna.

In the filing, Lindsay's lawyer argues "Many celebrities are known by one name only, and E-Trade is using that knowledge to profit. They used the name Lindsay. Lohan wants $50 million in exemplary damages and another $50 million in compensatory damages.

A rep for the company who produced the commercial said they weren't even thinking of Lindsay Lohan when they named the milkaholic baby. They used "Lindsay," because it's popular and happens to be the name of one of their employees.

America's Oldest Woman Dies at Age 114

WESTMORELAND, N.H. – Mary Josephine Ray, the New Hampshire woman who was certified as the oldest person living in the United States, has died at age 114 years, 294 days.

She died Sunday at a nursing home in Westmoreland but was active until about two weeks before her death, her granddaughter Katherine Ray said.

"She just enjoyed life. She never thought of dying at all," Katherine Ray said. "She was planning for her birthday party."
Even with her recent decline, Ray managed an interview with a reporter last week, her granddaughter said.

Ray was the oldest person in the United States and the second-oldest in the world, according to the Gerontology Research Group. She was also recorded as the oldest person ever to live in New Hampshire.

The oldest living American is now Neva Morris, of Ames, Iowa, at age 114 years, 216 days. The oldest person in the world is Japan's Kama Chinen at age 114 years, 301 days.

Ray was born May 17, 1895, in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She moved to the United States at age 3.
She lived for 60 years in Anson, Maine. She lived in Florida, Massachusetts and elsewhere in New Hampshire before she moved to Westmoreland in 2002 to be near her children.

Ray's husband, Walter, died in 1967. Survivors include two sons, eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Morris, the Iowa woman now believed to be the oldest U.S. resident, lives at a care center. Only one of her four children, a son in Sioux City, is still alive.

"She has some hearing deficiencies and a visual deficiency, but mentally she is quite alert and will respond when she feels like it and isn't too tired," said her 90-year-old son-in-law Tom Wickersham, who lives the same care center.
Wickersham said he visits his mother-in-law — who plays bingo and enjoys singing "You Are My Sunshine" — nearly every day.

"You can put aside any of those typical mother-in-law jokes," Wickersham said. "When I visit her, I spend probably at least a half an hour with her on a daily basis that involves as much conversation as you'd share, the usual things, the weather."

Nigerian Christian Massacre

JOS, Nigeria (AFP) – Nigerian troops were on Tuesday patrolling tense villages near the troubled city of Jos after the massacre of more than 500 Christians as survivors fled the threat of further violence.

Women and children were hacked to death or burned alive in their homes in the latest massacre. Survivors have accused the authorities of intervening too late.

Thousands have been killed in recent years in strife in and around Jos, which is on the dividing line between the largely Muslim north and Christian dominated south.

Witnesses blamed the latest massacre on the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group. According to media reports, Muslim villagers were warned by text message to leave two days before attack.

Security forces said they had detained 95 suspects in the violence, and acting president Goodluck Jonathan has sacked his chief security advisor but fears abound of either more attacks by the Fulani or of Christian reprisals.

With a six-month-old baby strapped on her back, Patricia Silas, 30, and her two neighbours escaped from Tin-Tin village late on Monday after funerals which saw scores of bodies of women, children and men buried in mass graves.

"We are fleeing our village because we are afraid we might be the next target of attack by these Fulani," she told AFP.
"They have been making phone calls warning they are going to attack. We take these threats seriously, we don't want to be caught off-guard," she added.

She says the threats came from Fulanis who used to live in their village but left after the outbreak of violence January which left at least 326 people dead.

"They are saying they want to avenge their loss," said Silas, whose village also suffered during January's attacks, when mainly Muslims were killed by suspected Christian activists.

As relatives attended funerals for the victims of the three-hour orgy of violence in three Christian villages, men huddled in small groups at Dogo Nahawa. One young man was overheard saying: "We will take revenge". Related article: Survivors' pain as victims buried

Officials said more than 500 people -- mainly women and children -- were hacked to death with machetes, axes and daggers in three villages of Dogo Nahawa, Ratsat and Zot, south of Jos city

Tensions ran high on Monday with a soldier shot dead while trying to calm Berom Christian youths in Bukuru town, 20 kilometres (13 miles) south of Jos.

"He is from there and he was appealing for calm in their local language when someone from the crowd shot him a close range," a military source told AFP.

The military on Monday shot dead a student taking part in a demonstration in downtown Jos after he ignored orders from the army to stop, witnesses said.

Nigeria's main opposition Action Congress (AC) accused the federal government of "hypocrisy in its reaction to the latest violence in Jos".

"Concrete action to stop the cycle of impunity, rather than crocodile tears, will end the violence," it said.
The AC said perpetrators of violence in recent years in Jos and its environs have not been brought to justice.

"With the mass burial of the victims, the issue is buried until the violence flares up again. That is why the perpetrators are encouraged to continue their dastardly act," said AC.

The weekend violence was just the latest between rival ethnic and religious groups.
Locals said Sunday's attacks were the result of a feud which had been first ignited by a theft of cattle and then fuelled by deadly reprisals.

Rights activists also said the slaughter appeared to be revenge for the January attacks, in which mainly Muslims were killed

Dozens dead from earthquake in Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) -- A pre-dawn earthquake collapsed homes and killed more than 50 people in a mountainous region of southeastern Turkey Monday, government officials said.

About 71 others were injured when the earthquake struck at 4:32 a.m., according to officials. The U.S. Geological Survey registered the quake at magnitude 5.9, while the Turkish earthquake monitoring center listed it as a 6.0.

The quake struck in Elazig province, with the village of Okcular the worst hit, according to Ozcan Yalcin, the press secretary for the province's governor.

The quake killed 51 people, the office of the Prime Minister and Crisis Center in Elazig province said. The death toll revises an earlier report by Turkey Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek that at least 57 people had died. There was no further detail on the discrepancy.

Dozens of aftershocks, ranging up to magnitude 5.5, shook the region in the hours after the quake.

"According to the information that we got from the technical teams on the ground, there shouldn't be anyone left in the rubble by now. But the search and rescue operations are continuing," said the deputy governor of Elazig, Mehmet Ali Saglam.

"Most of the houses that were demolished in the villages are not cement houses. ... Other buildings, such as schools, were not destroyed," the deputy governor said.

"The Red Crescent is there. They are giving all kinds of help to the people. They are setting up tents. The weather is cloudy, 8 to 10 degrees Celsius (46 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit)."

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on television said: "Teams from the state mass housing project have also been sent to the area to study how to rebuild the area in different methods."

Monday's quake occurred near the meeting point of two major fault lines, geologists said.

The Northern Anatolian Fault and East Anatolian Fault juxtapose each other, in an area where other fault lines exist, said Okan Tuysuz, a professor of geology at Istanbul Technical University.

"The Anatolian plate, which is surrounded by these two different fault systems, moves every year 2.5 centimeters westwards," Tuysuz said. "And the movement of the Anatolian plate westwards creates different fault systems in this area. And the earthquake occurred in such a complex geological environment."

Turkey is periodically pummeled by deadly earthquakes. In 1999, two powerful earthquakes hit heavily populated areas near Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, killing at least 20,000 people.

Benjamin Overmyer, 24, the manager on duty when the robbery occurred, has been discharged from Strong Memorial Hospital and is now recovering at his parents' home, said his father, Randy Overmyer.
After two men slipped in the back door shortly after 11 p.m. to rob the business, they snuck up behind Overmyer, hit him with a crowbar and beat him after he fell to the floor, his father said.
The men entered the store through a door that had been propped open while employees took out the garbage, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Nobody has been arrested.

You have all the people who went to see 'Avatar' and loved it, and this was the next 3D movie. There is a 3D halo effect right now, and this movie builds on that."

After a series of sneak peeks, the first full trailer for "The Runaways" has finally been unleashed. Premiered by Yahoo! Movies, the video gives a preview to how the rock band are formed, land their first record deal and live in their success.

"The Runaways" is based on the 1970s all-girl rock band of the same name, which were brought together in late 1975 by impresario Kim Fowley. Being expected to be an easy sell with a novelty act of teenaged girls performing in leather and lace, the girls ended up proving to be serious and influential musicians.

The film itself will cover the formation of The Runaways through to Cherie Currie's departure at the peak of their success. It will also highlight the relationship between lead vocalist/keyboardist Cherie and guitarist/vocalist Joan Jett.

In the video Lil Wayne and Eminem appear on the street among a gang of people running wild from every direction. Broken glasses shatter on the ground and fire set ablaze, giving a chaotic scene.

The video features cameo from Birdman and is directed by Chris Robinson. "As a director, it's how do you, more than anything, combine these two artists together and create something that's special. ... And for me, I almost take it like a feature film: How did [Martin] Scorsese put Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio in the same movie?" he told MTV about the concept.

"You got two guys who are basically huge supernovas coming together, and the way that the song is constructed is great," he continued. "Because unless you see it coming, you don't know Eminem is on the track. The first two hooks and the first two verses are all Wayne, and it's kind of a surprise when Eminem comes through, and we matched it visually how Eminem enters the piece."

"Drop the World" comes from Lil Wayne's first rock-inspired studio album "Rebirth". Its music video is one of the many videos which will be debuted to keep Weezy "visible" on TV once he stays in jail.

D.C. to be first U.S. city to give away free female condoms to fight HIV/AIDS

The District will become the first city in the United States to distribute female condoms free, part of a project that will make 500,000 of them available in beauty salons, convenience stores and high schools in parts of the city with high HIV rates.

City officials said the distribution could begin within the next three weeks in parts of wards 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7, where a study showed that large numbers of African American heterosexuals engage in risky sexual behavior that could easily lead to infection.

The move is an official acknowledgment of the futility of relying solely on the use of male condoms, which have been distributed citywide for nearly a decade, to stem the District's epidemic of HIV and AIDS. Officials said they are turning to female condoms to give women more power to protect themselves from HIV and sexually transmitted diseases when their partners refuse to use protection.

HIV/AIDS infection is the leading cause of death for black women 25-34 nationwide. A 2008 report showed the District's HIV/AIDS rate at 3 percent, or about 15,100 adults, a major epidemic.

"Anywhere male condoms are available, female condoms will be available," said Shannon Hader, director of the D.C. HIV/AIDS Administration. "We're not saying that if you're a school in this area, you can't get female condoms. We're trying to make every effort count to build on what already exists . . . to expand options rather than limit them."

The project is funded through a $500,000 grant from the MAC AIDS Fund, a subsidiary of MAC Cosmetics, which contributes to numerous city programs, including two of the city's needle exchange programs. The grant helped the city buy the condoms at wholesale prices from the Female Health Co. and provide them for distribution by social service organizations, including Planned Parenthood, the Community Education Group and the Women's Collective.

In recent months, the HIV/AIDS Administration came under scrutiny after a Washington Post investigation revealed that some groups with which it contracted to provide services failed to obtain business licenses and file tax returns. Others gave false information about employee résumés and consulting contracts, or spent lavishly on travel and executive salaries.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development threatened to withhold $12.2 million in federal funding but released the money after the District agreed to improve its tracking of spending by AIDS programs and monitor the services they deliver.

'Get with the program'

Hader said her agency is working to fix its problems while moving aggressively to attack the city's disproportionate rate of HIV infection. She said staffs of community organizations are training to demonstrate how the condom should be used properly. One group is in talks with a hair salon on Martin Luther King Avenue in Southeast Washington to introduce the condom and provide instruction on its use there.

"There are areas where the city is not doing a good job [with AIDS], but in some areas they are cutting edge. On this one, they're cutting edge" said Walter Smith, executive director of D.C. Appleseed, a watchdog group. "The very fact that they're doing this . . . says to women of the city that this is important to you. This is important to your families. Get with the program."

Nancy Mahon, executive director of the MAC fund, said she approached Hader last year after the city released the statistics on its AIDS rate and asked: "If you could have a dream project here, what would it be?"

Hader thought of HIV/AIDS "hot spots" identified in the HIV Heterosexual Behavior Study, which was released in tandem with the epidemiological report. In the behavior study, 75 percent of participants said they were in committed relationships. But nearly half, 46 percent, said they thought their last sexual partner had had sex outside the relationship. And nearly half, 45 percent, said they had had sex outside the relationship.

More than 70 percent said they didn't use condoms, and only 60 percent said they had been tested for HIV. Hader and other health officials said they think the District's HIV rate is closer to 5 percent because many people might be unaware that they are infected.

Activists say poor women often are reluctant to protest when their husbands and boyfriends refuse to use male condoms because they are dependent on the man's income.

The female condom has been available in Europe for nearly two decades and was first approved for use by the FDA in 1993. Its use in the United States was limited and ineffective. Women complained that the first version, FC1, was too expensive, about $17 for a box of five, and unsatisfactory.

New condom approved

Last year the Federal Drug Administration approved a second version, FC2, with a thinner polyurethane that conducts body heat and enhances sexual sensation for men and women, according to its designers at the Female Health Co. The new condom was developed in 2005 and became widely used in South Africa. It is now in use in nations such as Indonesia and Brazil.

Mahon and Hader entered into discussions with Mary Ann Leeper, senior strategic adviser for the Female Health Co. The company was in the process of contacting the health departments in cities with the highest rate of infection when the call came, Leeper said.

CVS became the nation's first pharmacy to sell the new condom after the group contacted the company, said Vernon Goad, CVS's field marketing manager in the Washington area. Goad said the pharmacy will offer the female condoms next to male condoms in all of its 56 city stores, not just in target areas. A package of three female condoms sells for $6.50. A three-pack of male condoms sells for $5 to $7.

The female condoms went on sale in December, but sales have been slow. "I don't think people are aware that we have them," Goad said.
