In addition to talking baseball, NFL, NBA, and a bit of college hoops, Web teases me throughout the show about a “mystery gift” he’s had for me since 2001, but won’t let me open it until the end of the show.

Don't worry, Weber did not bring me the head of Gwyneth Paltrow.

Segment 1 (0:00) - A week later, we get Web’s reaction to another World Series win by his beloved Yankees, and we dive into the hot stove league, and wonder if Livan Hernandez can actually help the Arizona Diamondbacks if he’s signed as the team’s 5th starter for 2010.

Segment 2 (24:03) - It’s all about the NFL and the Arizona Cardinals. Weber and I discuss where the Cardinals are at the midway point, and what lays ahead for the defending NFC Champions. We also go around the NFL, and hand out our very own midseason awards.

Segment 3 (52:34) - The Suns have suprised a lot of people with their 7-1 start, and we talk about it as well as some college hoops nuggets.

Answer--none.

Segment 1 (0:00) - Week 9 in the NFL is now in the books, and Chuck and I discuss the two faces of the Arizona Cardinals–which both happen to belong to Kurt Warner. And we discuss Anquan Boldin’s latest bellyaching, and what his future with the team after 2009 looks like. And we look at the rest of the league too, including the 8-0 Saints (man, that still sounds weird), the Broncos and their warts, and Larry Johnson’s unceremonious departure from Kansas City.

Segment 2 (22:37) - Quick, name the “signature” college football game to this point of the 2009 season? Betcha can’t, because there hasn’t been one. The college football season continues to disappoint, from matchups to teams, to players. We’ll talk about it here, and discuss the Arizona State QB situation, and why there’s even a remote possibility that Danny Sullivan should start Saturday at Oregon.

Segment 3 (41:13) - The Suns are back from an early-season road trip that saw them go 4-1. We talk about the optimism surrounding the team and we also just touch the surface of the Arizona Diamondbacks and their many offseason needs. (Hint: Lyle Overbay isn’t one of them.)

From five interceptions to five touchdown passes, Kurt Warner’s one-week turnaround couldn’t have been more dynamic for a quarterback. Warner tied a career high by throwing for five touchdowns after getting picked off five times the previous week and the Cardinals easily took care of the Bears 41-21 on Sunday. Warner was 22 of 31 for 261 yards and threw touchdown passes on the first four possessions as the Cardinals jumped ahead 34-7 after three quarters. That’s a great example of going from ice cold to burning hot as a player in a two week span.

Warner is quick to say the offense isn’t as consistent as it was at times last season and that the defense has carried this team in some weeks. This is not the norm for this squad with the offensive juggernauts they have in Warner, Fitzgerald and Boldin. Nobody thought that Arizona had any shot in the playoffs after “backing” in last season, but they proved all wrong by making it to the Super Bowl and almost winning the big game. Offense was the name of the game last year for Arizona, if the defense picks this team up and the offense comes along, this could be another dangerous run come the end of this season for them.

Kurt Warner joined the Dan Patrick Show to talk about the Cardinals rout of the Bears on Sunday, his bad week followed by his great week and if the Cardinals really are a good team or not.

Asked if he has any idea how good the Cardinals are right now:

“I have no idea how good we are. At times I think we are really good and then at times I don’t think we are really good at all. Its hard to say just like you said, I think the one thing we have been fighting for a couple years now is consistency. Last year we were 9-7, obviously we got on a run in the playoffs and played well. But, we have come back this year and been the same way, up and down, never know what you are going to get.”

Asked how he thinks the comparison of the Cardinals is to the Phoenix Suns:

“I think a little bit, I think maybe a bit more last year when we had the kinds the high flying offense. You never were sure what you were going to get one week to the next, or if we were going to get out-scored or whatever it might be. I think we are a little bit different this year just because our offense hasn’t played up to par, I think we are a more balanced team this year. The thing that is frustrating is we would like to take that balance and bring back in the offense, the fire power we had last year. So that’s when I think we can be a really dangerous football team. Right now the offense hasn’t been clicking up to par and we have relied on the defense this year then we have in the past.”

Dan said he does things in five’s, so whats next for Kurt this week in the five category:

“Man, I don’t know, hopefully not five fumbles. I am trying to think what else I can do…(DP:” I want you to get a running touchdown”). I would love to get a running touchdown. (DP: :would you spike the ball if you got a running touchdown?”).
Segment 1 (0:00) - The Cardinals stayed undefeated on the road, beating up on the Chicago Bears 41-21 at Soldier Field–and they did it without Anquan Boldin. Is #81 expendable? We’ll talk about that here in segment one.

Segment 2 (26:30) - ASU shut down USC, but lost, while U of A is cruising along down in Tucson, still with an opportunity to win their first ever Pac-10 Championship. We’ll discuss the two schools, and the rest of the landscape in college football, including why the hell was NAU playing Ole Miss in November?

Segment 3 (48:21) - The Phoenix Suns are off to a great start to the season, after beating Boston on Friday night and Washington on Sunday. We’ll talk about what’s going right for the Suns.

ASU is at a fork in the road in their 2009 season, but unfortunately a very angry group of USC Trojans come to town after a humbling loss to Oregon a week ago. Also, Arizona hosts Washington State in Tucson, and we talk about the possibility of U of A running the table as they control their own destiny in the Pac-10 race. Hint: that’s not going to happen, but we talk about the possibility anyway.

Segment 2 (28:11) - It’s a battle of up and down teams this week in Chicago as the Cardinals visit the Bears. Which Cardinal team shows up this week? And what should Coach Whisenhunt do with a less-than-100% Anquan Boldin in Chicago? We also look at some of the more intriguing matchups of the week including Pittsburgh at Denver, Dallas at Philadelphia, San Diego visiting the Giants and Baltimore taking on Cincinnati.

Segment 3 (53:40) - The Phoenix Coyotes got another win on home ice in Glendale, so we discuss why fans still aren’t gravitating towards this hockey team. And we discuss the Phoenix Suns first week of the 2009-10 season.

But that won’t happen, the 2009 season came to an end on Wednesday with the New York Yankees beating the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to win their 27th title. Chuck and I discuss Game 6, and I am forced to issue a painful apology to a member of the Yankees.

Segment 2 (26:11) - It’s a big weekend in football for the local teams. The up-and-down Cardinals head to Chicago to take on the up-and-down Bears, and ASU will try to upset the USC Trojans, who are coming off their worst loss in a decade.

Segment 3 (47:48) - We should have seen the Suns’ blowout loss in Orlando coming, and we get into the Marcus Jordan shoe fiasco going on at the University of Central Florida. Is Michael’s son really worth all the trouble (and $3 million)?

At one point, Channing Frye was the 8th overall pick in the NBA Draft. Everybody knows the draft is a crapshoot and not an exact science, but when a team drafts a guy in the top ten, they tend to think they are going to get a pretty good player, if not an All-Star caliber player. However, it doesn’t always work like that and it hasn’t worked that way for Channing Frye. So far, it’s safe to say that Frye hasn’t lived up to his top-ten draft position. When he came into the league with New York, he averaged 12 points per game and nearly six boards. However, since that time, he struggled to get consistent minutes with New York and was then buried on the depth chart in Portland.

This offseason, Frye left Portland as a free agent and went back home to Arizona where he played his college ball. It looks like that was exactly the move that he might’ve needed to rejuvenate his career. While it has only been five games, the Suns are undefeated at 5-0, Frye is averaging a career-high 17 points per game and he’s splashing threes like he’s Dan Majerle out there for Phoenix. I don’t know how long he can keep up his hot start, but Channing Frye has new life in Phoenix, is now playing in a system that is perfect for him, has Steve Nash getting him the ball, and most importantly is getting consistent minutes. Frye joined XTRA 910 in Phoenix with Bickley and MJ to talk about why he chose to go to Phoenix in the offseason, dealing with adversity in his career, playing in this system and getting to play with Steve Nash.

On getting an opportunity in Phoenix:

“Yeah, I guess I do. I’ve been through a lot in my career. A lot of ups and downs. I think for me right now, I think me being back home, with the team that’s here with me, being 26 and married and just very calm about everything. I’m really just trying to take advantage of this opportunity and enjoying it for what it’s worth. I’m just taking it game by game. I know that sounds cliché, but that’s really how I think”

On why he chose to come to Phoenix:

“It was a combination of three things. It was definitely the system, how they play. Each year you can see how each player is getting better. When Amare (Stoudemire) came here he wasn’t really known for being a shooter, but now he can spot up, he can face up, he’s making moves and he’s done a great job of trying to get better at playing defense. You look at Steve (Nash) who continues to flourish here. J-Rich (Jason Richardson) did great last year, Boris Diaw, I can go down the list of players that have really nourished and flourished here that may not have had an opportunity somewhere else. For me, just talking to Grant Hill and Steve Kerr, those guys definitely influenced me a lot to come here. Coming back home doesn’t hurt. Being a hometown guy doesn’t hurt, but it does put a little bit of extra pressure on you and I kind of like that.”

On playing in the system that Phoenix plays:

“The thing is, on a lot of teams, a lot of people worry about ‘well am I going to have to create myself or am I going to have to do this tonight and can this guy guard me.’ In this system stats are based on how other people play and what they’re trying to give up that night. For us, it’s really about you get Steve open, roll hard to the basket, and make sure you give him some space so that he can throw you the ball. That makes your job easy. I don’t go into the game thinking ‘oh, I’m going to get 20 tonight or I’m going to get 30.’ I go into the game thinking defensively I need to get stops, I need to make sure I’m on the glass and I just need to give Steve and Amare their space so that they can do what they do and after that I will be all good.”

On playing next to Amare Stoudemire:

Yeah definitely. I think the fact that we can switch is huge. I think the fact that both of us run, can get the ball out, can play different positions and I think the attention he draws on offense is huge. On defense, he is really great being on that weak side and I think it takes a lot of pressure off him on the defensive end. So that he can roam around and just use that athleticism, get a bunch of blocks and get out on the break. He’s one of the fastest big guys in the league.”

On playing with Steve Nash:

“He’s the best in the league. I’ve never been around a guy like him. It’s like the guy has 1,000 eyes. He sees everything, the game moves so slow for him and you never have to worry about ‘am I going to get the rock or not.’ It’s just a matter of if you’re supposed to get the rock. Everyone trusts him. It’s just an opportunity for everybody to make things easy for ourselves and it’s really fun to play out there. I’m having a blast.”

On the chemistry of the team:

“It matters 110 percent. In my two years in Portland, we had great chemistry, but I don’t think I’ve ever been on a team like this. It’s almost like a college atmosphere where everybody does almost everything together. In training camp everybody went out to dinner. There’s never two or three guys just by themselves. It’s always seven or eight and nine and the other four had to stay back with their family but they were like ‘we wish we were there.’ It’s just like everybody understands everybody, we all get on each other like brothers and I think there’s just a respect factor there that you know that there’s three huge guys here. Amare, Steve, and Grant. Then J-Rich is right there with Leandro (Barbosa). The rest of us are just here to be complimentary players and we’re down with that. We’re ready to win. The better our record is the more everybody is going to be taken care of and the more fun it will be. There’s no reason to have egos and there’s no egos on this team. Everybody just wants to work hard and continue to get better. The fact that we can yell at each other and not take it personal just shows you the kind of chemistry that we have. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’ve been in the league for four years, this is my fifth and I’ve never seen anything like this. For me to be here, it’s a great opportunity and a blessing.”

Chuck Powell of 98.7 The Peak joins me for another edition of the “Show To Be Named Later” on Fanster.com.
Not only is there still life left in the Phillies, Chuck believes Yankees manager Joe Girardi has handed the advantage in the series back to Philadelphia. Listen to Chuck’s compelling argument here.
Segment 2 (24:54) - We continue to talk about the Cardinals and their disappointing performance Sunday in a loss to Carolina. One of the big problems? The lack of the big play. Not only are the Cardinals not living up to their reputation as a wide-open offense, but they’ve become one of the more pedestrian offenses in the league. We also discuss the Saints’ win over Atlanta on Monday Night Football.

We start with the Arizona Cardinals, who turned in a sloppy, uninspired effort against the Carolina Panthers, losing 34-21. Michael and I discuss Kurt Warner’s 6-turnover day, as well as the defense, which had been outstanding in previous weeks, getting walked on by the Panthers. And we also take a look at the rest of the week in the NFL.

We’ll also talk about ASU’s loss to Cal, and the talk has started…has the game passed Dennis Erickson by?

And the Yankees find themselves one win away from World Series ring number 27, after beating Philadelphia 7-4. They can wrap things up tonight, but they’ll have to get by Cliff Lee, who has been virtually unhittable in the postseason.

On today’s show, we discuss the Cal-ASU homecoming matchup at Sun Devil Stadium and which ASU defense shows up–the one that dominated in it’s first 6 games, or the crew that took the field at Stanford last Saturday. We also re-visit the Sun Devils’ quarterback situation and wonder if Danny Sullivan’s job is all that safe if he gets off to a bad start against the Golden Bears.

We also talk about the Cardinals upcoming game against Carolina, the Panthers’ difficulties in keeping possession of the football, and the perceived nationwide lack of respect the Redbirds are receiving.

And in segment three, we talk about the World Series, more blown calls, the beginning of the “A-Rod Watch”, the Coyotes’ impressive back-to-back road wins and the Suns’ home opener against Golden State. Oh, and there’s more Moroccan Elephant Polo talk on this show than any other podcast in the history of the medium. Just sayin’.

What a difference a year makes. The last time the Arizona Cardinals played the Carolina Panthers was in the NFC Championship game last year. This week, the Cardinals are looking to go three games above .500 and the Panthers are looking to win their third game of the season. Kurt Warner and the high-flying offense are hitting stride but the Panthers passing defense ranks first in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game. It is the Panthers rushing defense that is suspect so maybe the Cardinals should try and just run it down their throats. Jake Delhomme looks like a 50-year old out on the field throwing 13 interceptions to just 4 touchdowns. and thanks to him, Steve Smith is a bust this year on my fantasy team. The all-of-a-sudden-great defense of the Cardinals shouldn’t have a problem for an offense that ranks near the bottom half of the NFL in total yards. So I would say the Cardinals win by two touchdowns.

Kurt Warner joined XTRA 910 in Phoenix to talk about what it was like personally to get a win in New York, the defense playing well and the team feeding off of it, and whether he has spoken to Todd Haley about the Larry Johnson situation.

On the excitement of the team now in Arizona and around the league:

“Well you know that is always subject to change. It is week to week in this business. A few weeks ago I thought someone said: Put a fork in us we are done. We win a few games now we are the talk of the town. You just cant get into all of that stuff. You know it doesn’t really matter. Six weeks in and nobody cares. We got a long way to go and hopefully keep it going and stay on this roll. No question it was a big win for us in New York, at their stadium, to be a team like that. I think it was a win that we needed as an organization for a confidence standpoint and maybe getting a few people believing that we can play with anybody in the league.”

On what it was like personally to get a win in New York:

“You know as far as going back to New York and all of this stuff of after being there for one year, it really didn’t mean a whole lot personally. It was great to get to see some of the coaches, great to talk to some of the ownership of the Giants because they were good to me. They gave me a great opportunity. I love my time there but as far as personal significance and winning that game there was really none but there was a huge significance in us going out there as a football team and winning a game like that. I was talking to some of the Giants before the game just telling them that I was excited for them in what they are building there. I told them: This is the kind of game that we need for our organization. To go out, to be very competitive, if not win the game on the road against a team that everybody considered for the last two or three years the best team in the NFL. Sure enough we were able to come out and put a great performance together specifically defensively. We really fed off our defense this past Sunday night. So a huge signature win for this point in the season but again, we are only six game in. It doesn’t mean a whole lot right now. We are definitely playing our best football right now and we definitely want to continue that.”

On the defense playing well and the team feeding off of it:

“No question and I haven’t been fortunate in my career that to play on many teams where I wasn’t expected to play at a certain level or the offense wasn’t expected to have to score a number of points to give your team a chance to win. It has been fun this year at times specifically like you said these last two games. To watch our defense play as a quarterback you don’t feel like you have to force anything. You don’t feel like you have to make every throw. You know if it is not there and you have to take a sack, you feel comfortable in doing that. I haven’t been in a position like that very often in my career so these last couple of games have been fun and it has been fun to watch our defense playing, watch them fly around and take advantage and really reap the rewards of the hard work that they are putting in.”

On the offense’s potential of taking it to another level this season:

“Well I don’t think there is any question. I think we played at a higher level consistently and maybe in the last couple of years. We know the potential is there. I think some of it is getting guys healthy, getting guys back and really getting into our groove. We have been there at times this year but I don’t think we have sustained it game in and game out like we know that we can. I think that is the exciting thing like you said. We are 4-2 and our defense is playing good football and we haven’t hit that stride yet offensively. We haven’t gotten to the point where we feel unstoppable which we have had around here in the past. If we can couple our defense with that mentality and getting back to that position offensively, that is when people are going to see what this team is all about. More like what we saw in the playoffs last year which we haven’t quite captured yet this year.”

On whether he has spoken to Todd Haley about the Larry Johnson situation:

“You know we text quite a bit. We haven’t had a chance to talk after this most recent incident that went on with Larry Johnson. But we do text all the time and we do talk when we have the chance. I know Todd is struggling and he is frustrated you know. With the success we had last year and wanting to go in and knowing his competitive nature… He wanted to win now but I also think he understands that this is a process and he is trying to take it all in and trying to learn how to handle the situation from a head coaching perspective which doesn’t happen overnight. You know guys it is hard to turn from a position coach or an offensive coordinator and all of the sudden become a head coach and understand everything that goes into it. So he is learning the position and his frustrated like the players are but that is the key for a head coach. He has got to keep everything together. He has got to keep everything moving forward. He has got to keep things positive and optimistic. I believe he is going to do that and at some point in time he is going to turn that thing around. Like I said it just doesn’t happen overnight. Unfortunately when you have a few guys that go the wrong direction, it sets everything back. So hopefully whatever happens with the Larry Johnson situation that it turns out to be for the betterment of the team one way or another and make them move forward and start making strides to building something there.”

Web, a devout Yankee fan, and myself, a recovering Yankee fan, break down the series.

Segment 2 (21:10) - Tonight, we also get our first look at the 2009-10 Phoenix Suns, as they take on the Blake Griffin-less Los Angeles Clippers at the Staples Center. We and I share our thoughts on this year’s Suns and ask the central question surrounding this team, “who is going to rebound?”

Segment 3 (41:31) - We take everything left over and throw it into a pot in segment 3…the Cardinals’ perceived lack of respect, the Sun Devils lack of an offense, the Coyotes’ ownership situation and Andre Agassi’s tweaking past.

This wasn’t the only news that came out of San Francisco. Sunday’s game featured the debut of former Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree, who was the last draft pick signed this season. Confident that Crabtree could come in and contribute to the team, Singletary and the 49ers finally reached a deal with their 10th overall draft pick five weeks into the season. Crabtree didn’t disappoint catching five balls for 56 yards. The 49ers are now 3-3 on the season, one game behind the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC West and have the Colts this week in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Mike Singletary joined KNBR in San Francisco and talked about Alex Smith starting this week, Crabtree’s first performance, why he didn’t want the QB change to feel like he was kicking Hill to the curb and how he feels about the rest of the season for his team.

Asked about the QB change from Shaun Hill to Alex Smith:

“I want to make sure it’s not one of those things where you take Shaun Hill and throw him out of door and say, “Hey we got a brand new quarterback and I feel great”.
Asked if he thought Hill lost his confidence after a great end to last season and a strong 3-1 start to this one:

“I don’t think he ever lost his confidence, that’s not who Shaun Hill is. I just think that defenses really began to , I guess make him have to work at doing some of the things that maybe he hadn’t anticipated before; try and take our running game away and make Shaun Hill win the game. That’s not who we wanted Shaun Hill to be and I think given the fact that our offensive line is still young and trying to gel…You know if Hill had the luxury of sitting behind an offensive line that’s been together, that’s gelled; you know you got some guys that are really sure of what they are doing. I mean we are still trying to learn the offense up front and trying to make sure we got everything down. I think it’s just a tough combination for Shaun Hill to continue to be successful.”

Asked about the status of the team and the direction of the team:

“Mike Singletary is very excited about going to Indianapolis and trying to win a football game. Very excited about the opportunity that we have to go on the road and play one of the best football teams in the league. We have 10 games left, there is a lot of football left, I am not worried, I am not panicking, I am not shaking in my boot or anything like that simply because of the guys I am surrounding by. I said it before, I have a tremendous coaching staff, got a tremendous team here. Our guys just have to continue and grow; we work through these growing pains and come out of it swinging. That’s who we are, that’s who we are going to be. I am very excited about the opportunity at hand.”

We also share our thoughts on the Suns, Shaq’s arrival in Cleveland, how the conferences are shaping up, and our picks to win it all.

Segment 2 (26:05) - The focus shifts to baseball and the World Series…first of all, why can’t baseball find a way to hold the World Baseball Classic without pushing the World Series into November. It’s really taking it’s toll this year as the Fall Classic features two cold weather markets. We break down the series matchups, and look at some of the postseason decisions made by managers Charlie Manuel and Joe Girardi.

Segment 3 (42:41) - Two days later, and we’re still buzzing about the Cardinals’ win at the Meadowlands. We’ll discuss that, the rest of the league, and also the world of college football.

The Arizona Cardinals made it to the Super Bowl last year under first year Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt and coming into this season there were again high expectations. Whisenhunt is an offensive-minded coach and has serious weapons in Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. So the question is, can this Cardinal team get back to the big game or was last year a fluke? Well the Red Birds are 4-2 on the season and Sunday night they had a big win against the New York Football Giants in Giants Stadium. The Cardinals hadn’t beaten the Giants on the road since 1999 and now Arizona has won three straight road games for the first time since 1987. Whisenhunt has this team playing very well and right in the hunt for the NFC West title to get them into the playoffs, where even though last season they backed into the playoffs, they still managed to get to Tampa for the Super Bowl. Arizona is home this weekend against the Carolina Panthers.

Ken Whisenhunt joined KTAR in Phoenix and talked about the big win against the Giants, how all of a sudden the team are the road warriors, where they stand in the NFC and where they would like to be at the end of the season.

Asked how big the win against the Giants was for the team and for him:

“It’s really ironic, at the same time last year the Dallas game was a big game for us. I think when you add the national spotlight to this game and we got to do it in front of all of our fans and in front of all the people across the country, its big. It’s one of the biggest wins we had, because on top of that, it’s an east coast win and that’s something that in the past, although we have been good this year, we haven’t been real effective at. For that standpoint for where we are at this point in the season, it’s a really big win for us.”

Talked about the 3-0 record on the road and being a good road team:

“I think they have a lot of belief in each other and we can overcome things. I think I point back to right before the half in the Super Bowl, when they had that big play for the touchdown, which was probably one of the most devastating plays you can ever face as a team. We were able to come back in the second half, and get back in front. That gave us a lot of confidence that we can overcome things. I think there is a lot of trust with our players, amongst our team and you look at how many different guys made plays. That to me is what a team is all about and that’s what’s so enjoyable about this win.”

Asked about being in the top tier of NFL teams and how they Giants win reminded teams about that:

“Not that we really worry about that, I think this is more for our fans which I believe in. Winning a game like this against a good opponent, which nobody questions the Giants are a good opponent, on national TV certainly gives you a lot of respect around the league. You know I got a number of texts from people in the league that were expressing to me how impressive that was. So yeah I think it’s good, because when you walk out in the public or when our fans our walking around with their Cardinals stuff on, they can hold their head up and say, ‘I am a Cardinals fan’ and hopefully that does give us a little more respect.”

Michael Kossett joins me to discuss the myriad of sports topics from the weekend on the always jam-packed Monday edition of the “Show To Be Named Later” on Fanster.com.

Adrian Wilson played like a mad man in the Cardinals' 24-17 win over the Giants.

Segment 1 (0:00) - The Arizona Cardinals scored their most impressive regular season victory in years by beating the New York Giants at the Meadowlands 24-17 on Sunday. The most impressive part is that the Cardinals didn’t play their best game. Michael and I discuss it, and Kossett serves himself a nice big crow sandwich. We also take a look at the rest of the NFL.

Segment 2 (19:44) - On the flip side, the Arizona State Sun Devils put forth their worst effort of the season with a 33-14 loss at Stanford. We’ll discuss the subject that just won’t go away…is it time for a quarterback change in Tempe?

Segment 3 (43:46) - The World Series matchup is set, and the fans in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium and Citizens Bank Park should bring their gloves to the game, because this has the potential to be a home run derby. We’ll discuss the matchup here.
