Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reports a three-way trade between Detroit, Philly and Phoenix has at least been talked about. Keaton (a.k.a. the Trade Talker) doesn’t like the frontcourt return for Phoenix, while Matt marvels at trades happening (or not happening) because of finances rather than basketball. As for Stoudemire himself, if you have a better trade in mind for Phoenix, or other questions/comments, please e-mail them to sevenminutesorless @fanster.com. Amare to Philly won’t die, not with Suns VP going to a Hornets/Sixers game Friday night. Latest reports have the Suns wanting to package STAT and J-Rich for Andre Iguodala, Sam Dalembert and a third player, while Philly wants Barbosa’s friendlier contract instead. Keaton has second thoughts about dealing Stoudemire at all, while Matt wonders what J-Rich did to take Barbosa’s place on the trading block.

Segment 1 (0:00) - We’re two days away from Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, and there’s been a realy dearth of juicy storylines–so much so that we’re hoping Marvin Harrison shows up in South Florida with one of his unregistered guns or Darren Sharper decides to skip the game to catch a donkey show in Tijuana. Luke and I talk about the game, who will win, Tim Tebow’s Super Bowl ad and whether Peyton Manning’s place in history will be sewn up with a win.

Segment 2 (23:16) - The Phoenix Coyotes are red hot, so what better person to break it down with than Luke, who has watched as much Coyotes hockey as anyone on the planet this season. And we also talk about the Sun Devils’ win in Pullman last night, and the distinct possibility that the Pac-10 could turn into a 10-way tie by the end of the season.

Segment 3 (42:52) - USC’s charming and upstanding head coach Lane Kiffin is now recruiting junior high kids. We’ll talk about how ridiculous this all is–and we open up the STBNL Mailbag.

The last thing Matt and Keaton want is a letdown loss to the Kings after wins against playoff teams, so forgive them for feeling concerned about Steve Nash and Jason Richardson guarding the highest-scoring backcourt in the league. Also, Phoenix is now fifth in the West after bottoming out at ninth, but does that mean they can relax (Hint: look at the standings)?

Segment 1 (0:00) - Suddenly, the Phoenix Suns are playing well again, winning their fourth straight in Denver on Wednesday night. And, Amare Stoudemire, the subject of more rumors than anything besides Lady Gaga and her sexuality, is right at the heart of the Suns’ resurgence. Larry Fitzgerald joined Mully and Hanley on 670 the Score in Chicago to talk about how he feels a year later after the Super Bowl loss, the retirement of Kurt Warner and who he likes in Super Bowl XLIV

On the memories from last year’s playoff run:

“It was great memories, but it’s still a little marred.  I woulda loved to be able to get a championship ring.   I woulda took all those personal accolades and threw them out the window to get that ring.  To be that close to having that championship it still kinda hurts in your gut.  I remember all the good things; just the amazing play of Kurt Warner and the rest of our team.”

On the importance of having a good quarterback:

“There’s a lot of truth to that statement.  I don’t care who you are.  If you don’t have a guy that can throw you the football it’s gonna be a long day at the office.  Since Kurt Warner has been here in Arizona, he’s really helped me.  Not only on the field but off the field to nurture me and push me to be a really good receiver.  He always stays on me to become better.  I think Jay (Cutler) is gonna help those guys.  With Mike Martz coming in there, with that offense, I think they’re really going to be potent.  They’re really gonna be a team to be reckoned with next year.”

On the decision that Kurt Warner made to retire:

“Yeah, it’s gonna be interesting to see.  Kurt’s done a fantastic job throughout his career playing football at an extremely high level.  Now the young guy, Matt Leinart, gets an opportunity and now everybody around him will have to pull and do a little bit more to help his transition to be that much easier.”

On whether or not he knew Warner was going to call it quits:

“Oh yea.  Me and Kurt are very close.  We talk all the time and I just knew it was getting to him in terms of the preparation.  He’s 38, he has a lot of family, seven kids and a wife, and there are some other things that he’s interested in doing off the field so I’m happy that’s he’s happy.  We’re gonna try and move forward and do the best we can.”

On the play of the Saints defense and whether or not it can be classified as dirty:

“No, it’s football.  If we were talking about a couple years back before they called a lot of rules to protect the quarterback, that was football every week in the NFL.  They just have an old-fashioned way to play, they get after the quarterback.  You gotta disrupt the timing and I think you’ve seen them do a good job and it’s been effective.”

On who he thinks will win the Super Bowl this year:

“I gotta go with the Colts.  You can’t go against Peyton Manning.  He’s incredible and whenever he steps on the field, his team has an opportunity to go out there and be victorious.”

So today, there is no co-host–you get more of me, Vince Marotta. And no, that doesn’t mean that I’m posting suggestive pictures or doing the show with no pants on (a la Kossett). Just me, sharing my thoughts and observations. But Chuck Powell does join me for a segment, so we’ve got that going for us, which is nice.

The part of Chuck Powell is being played today by actor David Hyde Pierce.

Segment 1 (0:00) - It’s national letter of intent day for college football, and I realize it’s a big deal, but this ranking of the recruiting classes has got to stop. Who knows how these kids will react to the enormous adjustments of college life, let alone performing on a football field in front of thousands and thousands of crazed fans? I discuss that and the Phoenix Coyotes magical run continuing with a 1-0 10-round shootout win over the Predators last night.

Segment 2 (15:09) - As promised, Chuck Powell joins me via Skype, and we cover a lot of ground, including the upcoming Super Bowl between Indianapolis and New Orleans, the controversy over Tim Tebow’s anti-abortion ad which will air Sunday and the talk of expanding the tournament field for NCAA March Madness.

Segment 3 (49:08) - The Suns are in Denver looking for their 4th straight win–I’ll preview that, and warn everyone not to get too excited about the recent play of Amare Stoudemire. Plus, we open up the mailbag!

The idea of Matt Leinart as the Cardinals’ starting quarterback in 2010 has fans worried. It sounds like you can count Kurt Warner among that group.

As a guest on Tuesday’s Dan Patrick show, heard locally on XTRA Sports 910 from 7-10AM, Warner talked candidly about his feelings on his former backup Matt Leinart.

Those feelings won’t exactly inspire an immense amount of confidence in the fans.

“I still don’t know what Matt Leinart’s gonna be,” Warner told Patrick. “I don’t know what his resume’s gonna be when he’s all done. I haven’t seen him play enough.”

Interesting quote from a man who has seen every training camp, practice and game Leinart has played in since coming to the NFL. If there is anyone who should be able to speculate about where Leinart’s career is heading, it’s Warner.

If that wasn’t enough to get the Card fans’ feathers ruffled, his next comment certainly would.

“I haven’t seen him consistently do all of those things and do them at a high level,” Warner said. “I’m gonna be out of the picture. He’s not going to have to live up to that expectation as far as having me behind him.”

In one quote Warner basically confirmed what fans and the media have speculated for years, Leinart is inconsistent and has yet to show he can do things at the highest level.

Post retirement Warner seems to have shed the company lines about Leinart in favor of more honest and candid commentary. The picture he paints is one that plays directly into every negative feeling about Matt Leinart that fans of the Cardinals have and are trying to burry.

Can Leinart carry the load?

Is he the future of the Arizona Cardinals’ franchise?

No one knows, not even Kurt Warner.

One thing is for sure, as Warner said in the interview, Leinart isn’t going to have the former MVP behind him or the expectations that come with that. Whether that’s good or bad is yet to be seen.

Segment 2 (22:44) - Just when you thought it was safe to start digging a grave for the 2009-10 Phoenix Suns, they start showing signs of life. Amare scores 36 and Steve Nash hands out 16 assists in a nice overtime win over Houston on Sunday. But the Amare trade rumors persist (where there’s smoke, there’s fire), so Greg and I talk about STAT’s future with the team.

Segment 3 (41:34) - The rebuilding U of A Wildcats find themselves in first place in the Pac-10 halfway through the conference season after their win over Cal on Sunday. Is this a sign that Sean Miller has the magic touch already or that the conference is really that bad?

Stoudemire is once again an All Star in the Western Conference and looks healthy for the first time in a couple of years. However, with his impending free agency in 2010, the Suns may not be able to keep STAT long term. In the off-season, the Suns traded away Shaquille O’Neal to try and clear some cap room and look toward the future. Now that we are halfway through the season and with Amar’e Stoudemire set to hit free agency in the off-season, it’s time for the Suns to make another move that will benefit them in the future before they let one of their best players leaves the Valley and the Suns get nothing for him.

Charles Barkley joined XTRA 910 in Phoenix with Bickley and MJ to talk about the retirement of Kurt Warner, what he expects Brett Favre to do, why the Suns should trade Amar’e Stoudemire, and whether or not he would like to take over for Steve Kerr if he steps down in Phoenix.

On the retirement of Kurt Warner:

“I think it’s different for him. He has something still left in the tank. I retired ‘cause I couldn’t jump over a jelly-glazed donut. I’m not gonna put him in the same sentence as Jim Brown, but there are very few athletes that are retired with anything left in the tank so God bless Kurt.”

On Warner walking away from an 11 million dollar contract:

“Yeah but as much money as he’s got, that’s all Monopoly money. Most guys today, God bless them, I’m not hating on them, they make so much money today. 11 million dollars, that’s only like 5 million dollars after taxes. He’s not gonna miss that.”

On whether or not it’s time for Brett Favre to retire:

“I think it is. I think that, to me is like a boxer when you take a serious beating and you’re all right after the fight to a certain degree but then it comes back and gets you in the long run. He was brutalized that game. Clearly the older you get, the more those beatings effect your body in the long haul. Cleary he wanted to stick it to the Packers and it kinda worked out 50/50 for both teams. He had a great year and the Packers got the last laugh. I hate to see any of my guys – when I say any of my guys – anybody that plays sports is a part of my family. I hate to see any of my guys have repercussions in the future.”

On what the Suns should do about Amar’e Stoudemire:

“The Amar’e situation. Amar’e is a very good player, but to me it’s a no brainer as far as trading him. He’s got an option for 17 million, he wants the max which will probably be 100 and something million, the Suns are not a legitimate contender and he’s a valuable piece. They’ve got to start rebuilding for the future. The thing that makes me laugh and I’ve been on this question for the last couple of weeks – people are acting like they’re breaking up the ’96 Bulls. That team won six championships and Michael (Jordan) has said he’s really bitter. They probably could’ve won another couple of championships. But the Suns haven’t made it past the first round of the playoffs in awhile. It’s just funny how fans are like oh we can’t do this. I’m like why can’t you do it? It’s like a no-brainer.”

On whether or not he would like the job in Phoenix if Steve Kerr steps down:

“No, I don’t want the job. First it’s a job that’s gonna take three or four years. Like you said they don’t have a number one draft pick next year so that definitely screws them. And it depends on what they can get for Amar’e. People aren’t going to go crazy over Amar’e because he can walk away from his contract. They’re just gonna have to make the best deal possible and go for it. It’s not like they’re winning. At this point, they’re clearly trying to shave salary. The sooner they can get started building toward the future, the better.”
