Until I have come to a unified decision that fits all of my needs and interests, I will have to shut down my checkbook and will no longer be able to pay my taxes. I’m sure you’ll understand. Thank you very much for setting an example we can all follow. Repost if you agree.

I have learned a lot about blogging since I started inMessment. Finding a niche is a big part of having a successful blog. Over time I think both inMessment and HistoricWords will benefit from this split. HistoricWords will be very focused on its specific niche. inMessment will continue to have its five categories but I will not be posting any more Founding Fathers post here unless they really fit in.

If you have been following inMessment specifically for the Freedom posts, please check out HistoricWords.com and you can follow there.

Moving the Freedom Category to the New Blog

It was a pretty big process for me to start HistoricWords.com. Here are the basic steps I went through:

Choose Domain Name

Choosing a domain name is always a hard task for me. I tried sever variations on “history” and “writing”. Then I would check if the names I came up with were available. The first choice I wanted, “WrittenHistory” is not a valid website but it is held by a domain auction site. They are willing to sell it to me but I am not ready to pay at this time. I came up with “HistoricWords” and now I like it better than my first idea. I was able to register it for $16 and I own it for a year.

Set Up WordPress

Next I had to Install WordPress and set up the theme for the new blog. I used a lot of what I had done with inMessment. At this point I use the Atahualpa Theme by BytesForAll. It has an Export/Import feature that allowed me to start with the same settings I have on inMessment. From there I adjusted the color scheme and sizing to fit the new vision I have for HistoricWords.com.

Exporting an Importing The Freedom Category Posts

WordPress has an Export feature that will export your blog to an XML file. Then you can import it to another WordPress site. It has filtering options that allowed me to export only the posts in the Freedom category. The export includes everything about the posts, including any comments, so when I imported them on the new blog they looked the way they did on inMessment.

Cleaning up the Messy Parts

The import process brings in all the categories and tags from the first site, so I had to delete the ones I did not want on the new site an make sure the posts were categorized and tagged the way I wanted them. This was a somewhat tedious process.

I also had a lot of links to the inMessment blog in the posts. I started going through them one-by-one and then I thought there must be a better way. I searched the WordPress Plugin site and found a plugin that will do Search & Replace. This allowed me to search through all the posts and replace links and other things that I wanted to change.

Add Redirects For The Moved Posts

One of the big things to worry about when moving posts from one blog to another is Google and other search engines. I was starting to get a lot of search engine traffic for the Freedom posts. I did not want to loose these searches. The way to handle this is to create a “301 Redirect” for each post. A 301 Redirect does two things, it redirect the old URL to a new URL and it notifies the user that the URL has been permanently change. Google and other search engines will take 301 Redirect and update their indexes.

I found another WordPress Plugin called Redirection which does exactly this. I started creating a single redirect for each post and again I thought, there must be a better way. After a little thought, I recategorized each post from Freedom to “Redirect to HistoricWords”. Then I was able to use the regular expression feature (really geeky stuff) of the Redirection Plugin to redirect any post in that category to the new blog. Then all I had to do was change the category on each post and the redirects were done.

There are lots of other tweaks and I am sure I will come across other issues, but those are the major steps I went through. Check out HistoricWords.com and let me know what you think.

Here is the About section from http://www.iwantyourmoney.net/:

Two versions of the American dream now stand in sharp contrast. One views the money you earned as yours and best allocated by you. It champions the traditional American dream, which has played out millions of times through generations of Americans, of improving one’s lot in life and the entrepreneurial spirit of daring to dream and to build big. The other believes that the federal government, using taxpayers’ money, should play a major role in leveling out the nation’s wealth to guarantee outcomes to all, regardless of effort. How America chooses between these two views of the role of government, at this crucial juncture, will have everything to do with the future we and our children and our children’s children will enjoy.

President Barack Obama clearly believes in the larger government view. In his Inaugural Address, he said, “Now there are some who question the scale of our ambitions – who suggest our system cannot tolerate big plans…The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works—whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified.” With a federal deficit of nearly one and a half trillion dollars for 2009 and deficit projections of not less than a half a trillion dollars over the next ten years, the question of whether government is too big or too small is very relevant, even vital to the future of the nation.

Join filmmaker Ray Griggs in this documentary film I Want Your Money as he contrasts the two paths the United States can take using the words and actions of Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan. The film uses interviews from well-known public figures, experts, movie clips, dramatic portrayals, music, graphics and even comedic animation to tell the story in the plainest terms of the choice between the Obama and the Reagan views of the role of the federal government in our society. It also examines how these big government programs have been tried in the past at great moral and financial cost to the nation. California is offered as a case-in-point in understanding what economic challenges might face the nation, if we choose the larger government path. Finally, I Want Your Money is a call to action for those who care about the future of the United States.

The picture above is of a yard sign I have in my front yard. A local business man had them made and I see them all over town. This expresses a sentiment that is strongly held by many this year that we really need to get out and vote if we are to Save The Republic!

Election day is November 2nd, 2010. Please make sure you get out and vote according to the dictates of your conscience. And get your friends and neighbors out too!

Below are some historical quotes that are excellent related to our duty to vote.

Samuel Adams

Let each Citizen remember, at the Moment he is offering his Vote, that he is not making a Present or a Compliment to please an Individual, or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn Trusts in human Society, for which he is accountable to GOD and his Country

Samuel Adams. The Writings Of Samuel Adams. Collected and Edited by Harry Alonzo Gushing Volume IV 1778-1802 G.P. Putnam’s Sons. New York. 1098

Alexander Hamilton

A share in the sovereignty of the state, which is exercised by the citizens at large in voting at elections, is one of the most important rights of the subject, and in a republic ought to stand foremost in the estimation of the law. It is that right by which we exist a free people; and it certainly, therefore, will never be admitted, that less ceremony ought to be used in divesting any citizen of that right, than in depriving him of his property.

John Church Hamilton. The Life Of Alexander Hamilton, Volume IINew York. D. Appleton & Co. 1840

Charles Grandison Finney

The church must take right ground in regard to politics. Do not suppose, now, that I am going to preach a political sermon, or that I wish to have you join and get up a Christian party in politics. No, I do not believe in that. But the time has come that Christians must vote for honest men, and take consistent ground in politics, or the Lord will curse them. They must be honest men themselves, and instead of voting for a man because he belongs to their party, Bank or Anti-Bank, Jackson, or Anti-Jackson, they must find out whether he is honest and upright, and fit to be trusted. They must let the world see that the church will uphold no man in office, who is known to be a knave, or an adulterer, or a Sabbath-breaker, or a gambler, or a drunkard. Such is the spread of intelligence and the facility of communication in our country, that every man can know for whom he gives his vote. And if he will give his vote only for honest men, the country will be obliged to have upright rulers. All parties will be compelled to put up honest men as candidates. Christians have been exceedingly guilty in this matter. But the time has come when they must act differently, or God will curse the nation, and withdraw his spirit. As on the subject of slavery and temperance, so on this subject, the church must act right or the country will be ruined. God cannot sustain this free and blessed country, which we love and pray for, unless the church will take right ground. Politics are a part of religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to the country as a part of their duty to God. It seems sometimes as if the foundations of the nation were becoming rotten, and Christians seem to act as if they thought God did not see what they do in politics. But I tell you, he does see it, and he will bless or curse this nation, according to the course they take.

Webster’s exciting new volume, 1776 Faith: the Christian worldview of the signers of the Declaration of Independence is one of the most intriguing books on the subject which I have seen. His in-depth examination of the signers, their faith and worldviews go a long way in enlightening the American people concerning the founding of the country. I heartily recommend it to every American and hope that it has a very wide reception.

Phil has provided me with the following letter of introduction. I am happy to share this with you.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Phil Webster and I speak at churches and civic groups about the Christian worldview of the Founding Fathers. While doing my presentations I appear in character as John Jay, the nation’s first chief justice. Mr. Jay is just the man to present the Christian worldview of the signers because he knew them personally. Hopefully, this generation will rediscover Mr. Jay’s December 23, 1776 speech in which he mentioned God and having faith in God 33 times. The members of the Continental Congress knew of his Christian faith when he was elected President of the Continental Congress. The members knew of his Christian faith when they voted him as the first Chief Justice. Many people in our current generation are unaware that he was also President of the American Bible Society. I have written a book entitled Can a Chief Justice Love God?: The Life of John Jay (Author House, January 2002).

The second book has a broader focus, that of the Christian worldview of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. It is entitled 1776 Faith: The Christian Worldview of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. The second book is based on reading the 26 volumes of the “Letters of the Delegates [of the Continental Congress] 1774-1789” and the 34 volumes of “Journals of Continental Congress”. After hearing and reading so much about “all the Founders were deists and atheists,” I decided to take the Founders’ Challenge. While reading these volumes, I took notes to see if the Founders were deists, atheists or if they had a Christian worldview. My research shows me that at least 54 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence are guilty of a Christian worldview (possibly more).

To confront the attacks of those who say that the Constitution is godless because it does not mention God, I have written a third book, Constitutional Religion. The Christian worldview of the signers of the Constitution is shown by their pithiest Christian statements. All 50 states mention God in their state constitutions. The Northwest Ordinance, written the same year as the Constitution, stated that “religion and morality…shall forever be encouraged.” The first four presidents (Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison) promoted general tolerant Christianity.

My public presentation consists of John Jay presenting the Christian worldview with the help of Mr. Franklin’s technology with Power Point. Here are the presentations:

Some may wonder if the American Revolution was really sanctioned by God. Was it anything more than just a rebellious uprising by a bunch of malcontents? I hear statements like, “the Bible does not support disobedience to the government.” People will refer to Romans 13:1 which says, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.” While I can understand the argument and I can see where the thoughts come from, I feel that this idea is a misunderstanding of the roots of the American Revolution and of what the Bible teaches about governmental authority.

First let’s look at some points about the American Revolution. A good place to start is in the Declaration of Independence. It has a simple list of grievances that give the reasons ”it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another.” This list shows that England was ignoring our human rights and was in fact waging war against the colonies already. ”In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.” The Revolutionary War was a defense of our self-evident, God given rights as humans.

One of the best defenses I have found on the Revolution is by Founding Father Francis Hopkinson – a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Hopkinson wrote a “A Political Catechism:”

Question. What is war?
Answer. The curse of mankind; the mother of famine and pestilence; the source of complicated miseries; and the undistinguishing destroyer of the human species.

Q. How is war divided?
A. Into offensive and defensive.

Q. What is the general object of an offensive war? . . .
A. [F]or the most part, it is undertaken to gratify the ambition of a prince, who wishes to subject to his arbitrary will a people whom God created free, and to gain an uncontrolled dominion over their rights and property. . .

Q. What is defensive war?
A. It is to take up arms in opposition to the invasions of usurped power and bravely suffer present hardships and encounter present dangers, to secure the rights of humanity and the blessings of freedom to generations yet unborn.

Q. Is even defensive war justifiable in a religious view?
A. The foundation of war is laid in the wickedness of mankind . . . . God has given man wit to contrive, power to execute, and freedom of will to direct his conduct. It cannot be but that some, from a depravity of will, will abuse these privileges and exert these powers to the injury of others; and the oppressed would have no safety nor redress but by exerting the same powers in their defense and it is our duty to set a proper value upon and defend to the utmost our just rights and the blessings of life, otherwise a few miscreants [unprincipled individuals] would tyrannize over the rest of mankind, and make the passive multitude the slaves of their power. Thus it is that defensive is not only justifiable but an indispensable duty.

Q. Is it upon these principles that the people of America are resisting the arms of Great Britain, and opposing force with force?
A. Strictly so – The Americans had nothing in view but to live peaceably and dutifully. . . And may Heaven prosper their virtuous undertaking!

Founding Father John Dickens, who was a signer the Constitution in 1787 understood that our rights do not originate with governments. He stated,

Kings or parliaments could not give the rights essential to happiness, as you confess those invaded by the Stamp Act to be. We claim them from a higher source—from the King of Kings and Lord of all the earth. They are not annexed to us by parchments and seals. They are created in us by the decrees of Providence, which establish the laws of our nature. They are born with us; and cannot be taken from us by any human power, without taking our lives. John Dickinson, The Political Writings of John Dickinson (Wilmington: Bonsal and Niles, 1801), Vol. I, p. 111.

Next let’s look at some biblical examples where tyrannical governments were disobeyed. There are numerous accounts were people disobeyed direct governmental authority. The stories of Daniel in the lion’s den, The Three Hebrew Children, The Hebrew Midwives, and Jesus’ disciples preaching.

To me there is a clear understanding that the American revolution was a defense of our God given rights. Governments are to be obeyed as long as they are not in contradiction to the the Law of God. When a government steps beyond its jurisdiction we must follow the Law of God over the law of man.
