Maybe this should have been episode 666 of inThirty instead of 66 because we don’t know what the devil happened. We start off talking about battery life and its importance (yes, we determine it is important) in the wake of the power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy and veer off into Scott Forstall’s crazy eyes, skeuomorphic (woah, I spelled that right the first time!) design, and whether the Lightning Port is responsible for the iPhone 5′s quick charging. Harry and Justin then proceed to get into a knock down drag out argument about the quality of Siri and Apple Maps while Chaim checks for the nearest open gas station on his Nexus 7. We do not, at anytime during the 30 minutes of this episode, rock the vote.

We wish everyone recovering from Hurricane Sandy well, and episode 65 of inThirty goes out to the team at PSE&G for getting power back to Chaim, Harry, and Justin in time to talk about tablets. Google didn’t fair as well and their scheduled Android event was moved from IRL to online. Chaim managed to collect all of the sweet details about the dot 2 update to Jelly Bean and the hardware that’ll accompany it before he was knocked off the grid but Harry is not impressed. We pit the new Android tablets and the Kindle Fire against the recently announced iPad Mini and discuss price point, features, design, and determine along the way that this holiday season Amazon, Google, and Apple will duke it out in in the less than ten inch category. Chaim and Justin were introduced to a new contender in the ring, the Microsoft Surface, at Microtropolis (go on, Google it), while Harry went undercover at a Microsoft Store to try it. Harry likes its kickstand, Chaim says it’s revolutionary, Justin says it’s mutant disaster of a device. Take some aspirin (that’s a really subtle tablet pun), put on your headphones, and listen up.

Isn’t every Apple Event special? On Episode 64 (make that 64 bit, we upgraded) of inThirty
Chaim, Harry, and Justin along with guest host Kelly Guimont of TUAW ooh, ahh, and yawn (Chaim) over the announcement of the new iMac and Mac Mini, MacBook Pro 13″ with Retina Display, iPad with Retina Display (don’t call it the iPad 4), and the worth the price of admission all by itself iPad Mini. We start by critiquing the legerdemain used by Phil Schiller when he removed the black cloth from the slim from one perspective, bulbous from another iMac and quickly move on to discuss whether the new Mac Mini is enough to replace the Mac Pro or even the defunct Xserve. We boldly go where no podcast has gone before in our discussion of Apple’s Fusion Drive SDD plus HDD melding tech. And, yes, everyone wants the new 13″ MacBook Pro with Retina Display – how could the little sibling of the beautiful 15 incher disappoint? Do the non Retina MacBooks deserve to keep their Pro suffix? We discuss. Amongst ourselves. Apple speeds up its upgrade cycle some with the iPad 4, but how long did you expect the Lightning port to be kept away from the iPad? We finish up with a who/what/where/when/why on the iPad Mini and manage to wake Chaim up from his slumber (he uses Apple announcement videos as a sleep aid) in time to compare the new device to his beloved Nexus 7.

On episode 60 of inThirty we investigate the disappearance of hundreds of iPhone 5 users – apparently the new Apple Maps app is to blame for sending them off course. With the help of special guest Stephen Hackett of 512Pixels.net, we dig into the new Maps in iOS 6 and figure out that while its Flyover feature can make you feel like Super Man, it leaves a lot of users longing for Google’s more down to earth Street View. Chaim and Harry take turns giving their take on turn by turn directions and Chaim reveals that he’s always on time since he uses Google Now on his Galaxy Nexus, and Harry says who needs transit directions in Maps on iOS 6, he’s memorized the rail schedules anyway. Get your abacus app ready because on episode 59 of inThirty we take you through iOS 6′s launch by the numbers. First we hash out how many people will be running this hexa-release of iOS on the flagship iPhone 5, and it turns out, it’ll be quite a few. Something like 2 million people sacrificed their credit card numbers to the gods of industrial design and expect to have a brand spanking new i5 at their door on September 21. We try to calculate the amount of revenue the preorders will generate for Apple but our screens can’t fit all of the digits. Next, we take you through the BOM, the bill of materials, for the new iPhone 5. We figure out how much an extra 16GB of memory, or if you’re in the 1% and opt for a 64GB iPhone, an extra 48GB of memory really costs Apple, and how much profit they squeeze out of people just so they can store all of their Angry Birds high scores on their phones. Finally, Chaim goes all Suzy Orman on us and looks at the total cost of ownership of a carrier contract subsidized iPhone purchase and compares that to buying an iPhone at, gasp, full retail cost and bringing your own plan. For the students out there we should mention: listening to this episode counts as 3 credits of undergraduate study in macroeconomics.

iPhone 5 is Alive

One, two, three, four, five, five: It’s here the sixth version of the iPhone, the iPhone 5. Tim Cook, who doubled down on secrecy, took the stage at Yerba Buena and shocked the crowd by introducing a device with a design that no one outside of Apple could have even imagined – well, at least the new iPod Nano and Touch’s designs hadn’t been spoiled by tech bloggers. Chaim is unimpressed, Harry is dying to get the five digits on his right hand around an i5, and Justin admits to having a crush on Jony Ive. We talk about the iPhone 5′s upgraded speakers, its trio of mics, the elongated screen, the sapphire lens coating and its diamond polished chamfers. Damn it has nice chamfers.

Parents, you’ve got to catch episode 57 of inThirty – do you really want your son or daughter starting the school year without being able to explain the differences between the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD and the Motorola Droid RAZR HD? We didn’t think so. Chaim takes us through the ins and outs of Motorola’s new crop of devices while Harry snores. Some are shipping with Android’s latest release, Jelly Bean, but most, unforgivably, come from the factory with the out of date Ice Cream Sandwich. Harry wakes up in time to gush over Nokia’s newest Lumias, all of which sport Windows Phone 8, or at least will, when they ship, but no one knows when that’ll be. Finally, Justin longs for an Amazon based smartphone, even just so he can tear it down. Oh, and wait, isn’t Apple going to announce something in a couple of days? We cover that, too. We don’t want your kid to show up on the first day of school not knowing the specs of the iPhone 5, after all.

We compare the security mentality of Apple, Google, and Amazon and decide which company’s cloud is most secure. You know, the best place to store your baby pictures. We also factor in two-step authentication (that’s almost a pun) and discuss whether it should be widely adopted. MoLo, YOLO; Mountain Lion Review

Lucky for us Apple decided to release the dot eight version of OS X to celebrate inThirty’s second year and 52nd episode. Justin likes to live on the edge so he’s been playing with the betas, but Chaim, Harry, and special guest Apple aficionado Drew Pitchford (the guy who correctly predicted Mountain Lion’s release date before any of the rumor sites) finally get the gold version on their machines.

We hunt down the most significant changes in Mountain Lion, give our first impressions of the GUI, compare it to its predecessor Lion, discuss the impact of iOS on Apple’s latest feline-themed desktop release, and all gasp as Harry gives Android credit for a specific feature of Apple’s latest and greatest. We do all that in thirty minutes, woah.

Our respect to Drake for this episode’s title and to Snoop for showing his support of 10.7 by donning the Lion moniker.
