Broadband for a Bargain in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a world unto itself in many ways. Although it was transferred to Chinese rule in 1997, the city-state has remained distinctly its own. One of Hong Kong's unique features is its expansive skyline and with it, a high population density.

My 2012 Wish List

The first month of 2012 is ending as I write. Do you remember what you resolved a month ago? With experts telling us that New Year's resolutions have an 80 percent failure rate, I'm guessing many of you have quietly dropped your plans by now, if you made any.

CES 2012 - Did IPv6 not get the invite?

It was my first time at CES, which as an electronics lover, I'm ashamed to admit. I have been missing out all this time. CES made me realize how big the "Electronics Industry" actually is. Everything from car stereos, home electronics, 3D technology, batteries, phones, tablets to robots were on display.

I'm here in Las Vegas at CES and headed to the IPv6 World Forum event next month in Paris, and my mission isn't just to visit exotic settings. (OK - Vegas is not so exotic unless you put in 100,000 geeks salivating at the new 4K TVs.)

No a la carte? No thanks.

Recently, I went to my cable provider's customer service page to add a specialty channel and activate a new set-top box. I had used this portal before to easily add channels and equipment, but much to my chagrin, doing so was no longer easy or straightforward. I expected a smooth and easy procedure, but the experience left me feeling frustrated. By the end I was considering other options.

ICTC in China

The ICTC-that's short for International Coverage and Transmission Conference-is small in comparison to the CCBN. (I blogged about the CCBN in April here.) The ICTC was held back in October in the historic city of Xi'an, an old capital of China before Beijing. If you've heard of the Terracotta warriors, then you know where Xi'an is.

Broadband World Forum 2011 Recap

Speaking of trade show season, before it gets too far away, I wanted to say a little more about this year's Broadband World Forum. It was held in Paris back at the end of September. Attendance was its best ever, but this is the last year for Paris, as the event moves to Amsterdam in 2012.

Tradeshow Season is Underway!

Fall is a busy time of year for tradeshows and this year is no different. We started the season with our second appearance at Broadband World Forum in Paris at the end of September and the launch of our TR-069 Open Interop Program. The conference was a great success and if you'd like to learn more about the free program, please visit: http://www.incognito.com/interop/

Comments on CableLabs NAT444 Demo

If you were not at this year's National Cable Show, you missed some great exposure to IPv6 in the Windy City. At the Incognito booth was an overview and demonstration of Broadband Command Center 6.0. BCC 6 delivers all IPv6 related provisioning features for DOCSIS and PacketCable networks. IPv6 is clearly the front burner topic for our industry. A half-day IPv6 Summit preceded this year's Cable Show. It featured a wide range of executives from the Internet community, technology companies, service providers, content providers and government. The topic remained live throughout the three-day show, including a Network Address Translation (NAT) 444 demonstration at the CableNET exhibit.

World IPv6 Day: A Look Back, and Forward

World IPv6 Day (June 8, 2011) came and went. Not a lot was noticed on this global test day, which the Internet Society sponsored and hundreds of companies supported. That is a good thing. Things that were intended to happen did happen. On company web sites that ought to have been IPv6-enabled with support to convey a connection over IPv6...

China and CCBN

Just came back from my second trip to China this year. Some of my team and I went to meet with customers and attend the annual China Content Broadcasting Network (CCBN) conference. The size of this show reflects the appetite for everything TV and telecommunications in China. It is roughly two-thirds the size of IBC in the Netherlands and twice as large as the NCTA Cable Show in the US. And again, I returned in awe of China - and that's on top of the cold I picked up.

What are You Doing This July?

I'm thrilled to announce the upcoming Incognito Global User Conference. Last year's event brought together many of our customers and partners, from executives to engineers. The gathering was haled as a success by all of the attendees. This year, we are holding the event from July 12 to 14 in our own backyard, Vancouver. On behalf of all of us at Incognito, I am extending an invitation to you.

Looking Forward to 2011

Compared to my home town in Eastern Canada, the city of Vancouver has very mild winters. Because of the small amount of snow we get, even a sprinkling of the stuff is enough to send the city into a panic. To adapt to the changing environment, drivers change their driving habits; they slow down, re-route or take the bus. They may curse the weather, but unless they move to California, they know they need to adapt to survive...

IPv6 - Should You Take the Leap?

A few months ago, I decided to try skydiving. I had been curious for years and figured it was time, but I didn't want to do it alone, so I "convinced" a number of co-workers to go with me. On the ground, we decided the order in which we would jump out. Nobody wanted to be first...
